When his strongest element is water and his staff x5 it
It's because he found the best way to farm beasts was to use earth magic(Quagmire + Stone canon) rather than using his entire arsenal of advanced tier magic.
Basically? If mud and.rock work why use more?

Even so, water is his most powerful element without the staff. A water spear would do more damage than stone cannon. Even while he was fighting for his life he hadn't used water once.
@@fin177. yes, if Rudeus was a standard mage chanting then he might prefer water magic.
However, something to make clear is the staff basically improves his mana costs. A spell that would cost 5 mana points would cost only 1 mana points with the staff. If Rudeus' mana capacity wasn't world class, then he'd probably use more water spells.
Not only does he not have to consider mana costs when using magic, Stone canon, the main damage magic Rudeus uses, can be modified to be much more powerful thanks to his ability to cast it without an incantation.
Rudeus spends an entire chapter experimenting with different shaped stone bullets with different hardness, speed, rotation, grooves, etc etc. This allows his stone bullets to be used in a wide arrange of scenarios. As of Volume 11, he's made a hollow point bullet, non lethal bullet, armor penetrating bullet, explosive bullet, smokescreen bullet etc etc.
With water magic Splash Flow for example, the only attribute he can change was speed and size.
TLDR: Earth Magic Stone bullet allowed him to create many different types of attacks, allowing Rudeus to be much more versatile than any other school of magic.
Additionally, Quagmire is a melded magic using both earth magic and water magic, so he technically is using water magic

Crazy how rudeus is emperor rank in water magic but rarely used it, and also shows how eris loved him she even specifically order it to suit his strongest magic
It wasn't his strongest magic, he only learned a water saint spell, but he also has an emperor level fire magic against orsted, and king level earth magic against badigadi. The standards in that world are if you can use this spell you are acknowledged as that tier.

It's actually not just sylphie aswell, Ariel hired two advanced ranked water magicians to activate the spell and sylphie boosted it cause rudeus was about to dispell it lmao, and the spell drained both the water magicians and sylphie while Rudy just well normal for him.

For an isekai anime/series. Mushoku is incredibly detailed and engraved in lore. I haven't read any LN content but i cant wait to discover more.
theres a lot more in the ln that I couldn't cover entirely so I highly recommend you read it yourself

The lore is deep but what I absolutely love the most is the writing style. Keeps you interested almost constantly. I highly recommend!!

Despite the massive stat boost to water magic, him learning under a water mage, and his fitst spell being a water spell, Rudy primarily uses an earth spell for combact.
Yeah, its because its the simplest and easiest spell he can cast, its power is also easily adjustable for him, depending on how much mana he pumps into it (and a number of other factors).

I know all this, im merely explaining stating the facter that because of his earliest mastery as water and fundamental understanding of silent casting he is fully capable of applying the technologies used with stone cannon for a similar rank water spell.
Despite this he has gravitate towards a different element which plays off his water element to produce the signature spell quagmire

True, however its the simplest and one he knows how to cast like the back of his hand. Alongside quagmire. His power can be easily go through it and its generally enough for most enemies.

Interesting fact about folding.... Take a sheet of paper and fold it once. You have a 2x thickness. Fold it a second time and you have a 4x thickness. Fold it a third time and you have an 8x thickness. Fold it a fourth time and you have a 16x thickness. Fold it a fifth time and you have a 32z thickness. Fold it to seven times and you physically can't.
But if you are a fucking idiot and have a five fold water magic staff, then you can cast water magic 5x times more effectively than without the staff. Not 32x more effectively, just five times. Wow, Engo Jungu dai ju bo?

Rudeus should have studied more science. Or just been a weirdo like me and able to think of crazy ideas that have the lore or science to back em up
His move on the hydra was good but it caused the creature to thrash around. I would have never used such explosive measures with the rest of the group so close and would have informed them of a safe word if I intended upon using it.
He essentially used a combo of chemical explosions with mineral rock shards. While efficient he didn't consider two things.
In this world using magic he can just produce the pure element instead of the mixed and impure stuff we find and have to refine in labs.
Second. Compounded on it probably being pure he did not consider the concentrated amount he had produced nor how catastrophic that explosion would be.
In turn he used something he probably thought up on the spot and never tested in extreme combat while in close quarters with his party. Rudeus may be strong but he is very inefficient and doesn't grasp just how much more powerful he us than the average person.
So if his staff is basically made for water magic then why doesn't he use any powerful water spells?
Im just saying this from the anime pov cuz i hardly saw him use water magic than any other element 😅
Someone else in the comments explained it, but essentially he found his most optimal use for efficiently taking out monsters, which is Stone cannon + Quagmire. I can imagine that its like choosing to throw a waterball at someone that will still do good damage, compared to firing a quick bullet XD.

Try playing the Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen, it has no water magic but ice magics. The magic gameplay in there is so good and satisfying. Also there will be an upcoming 2nd Dragons Dogma soonest.

Quagmire is earth and water combined magic, plus it says in the LN/WN that it doesn't just increase power, but can be used to reduce the mana cost as well, so technically he's using it right. Also according to the LN, another character states that normally the quagmire spell is only supposed to be the size of a plate, but his quagmires cover massive areas, so it makes sense that the spell would end up becoming his nickname.
With that much physic knowledge, i wonder why he didnt compress water into hydraulic beam yet, or laser beam and slice through everything
For now, it might be because he finds Stone Cannon to be most convenient, as the spell is flexible and can be customized to however he wants. It also pairs well with his quagmire.
Because not many battle to the death opportunitys to use such power. Plus THATS FUNNY YOU SAY THAt because he does that againts a (spilers)

Are you talking about the water, fire, earth, and wind magic being boosted by different folds? If so, this was a thing stated in the light novel, not the anime.
