Rome -- More Images -- Episode 09: Stadio dei Marmi / The Stadium of the Marbles

Hello everyone. This is Fr. John Wykes, OMV, with more images of Rome. Today we are visiting the amazing and controversial Stadio dei Marmi, the Stadium of the Marbles.
Just one part of a large sports complex built in the 1920s and 1930s, the Stadium was constructed under the supervision of Benito Mussolini. Its famous nude and semi-nude marble statues of youthful male athletes, gifts from the Italian provinces, were meant to celebrate the Fascist ideal of forming citizen warriors. The stadium and the statues are both still in existence today. Some see them as an embarrassing reminder of Italy’s Fascist past, while others say the beauty of the artwork goes beyond politics and should be celebrated. Either way, a visit to the Stadio dei Marmi is a memorable experience.

Solo una parte di un grande complesso sportivo costruito negli anni '20 e '30, lo Stadio fu costruito sotto la supervisione di Benito Mussolini. Le sue famose statue marmoree nude e seminude di giovani atleti maschi, doni delle province italiane, avevano lo scopo di celebrare l'ideale fascista di formare cittadini guerrieri. Lo stadio e le statue esistono ancora oggi. Alcuni li vedono come un imbarazzante promemoria del passato fascista italiano, mentre altri dicono che la bellezza dell'opera d'arte va oltre la politica e dovrebbe essere celebrata. Ad ogni modo, una visita allo Stadio dei Marmi è un'esperienza memorabile.
