I've seen a few videos using this method and may try it. I do have one question though, using the top down fire does it take longer to get the oven to the high temperature needed for pizza?

Hey Andy, from our experience this actually heats the oven up quicker.

I'm getting hissing from my firewood when it's burning? And do you always light the fire right at the opening? And when do you push it back?

That usually means you have wet wood. The wood should be pushed or placed in the center of the oven immediately and moved to the side once it is up to temperature. This allows the oven to heat up evenly.
