    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ra (Jaye Davidson) tells Jackson (James Spader) that he will destroy Earth.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
This lucrative, elephantine-budgeted sci-fi opus paved the way for director Roland Emmerich's mega-hit Independence Day (1996). The story commences in Giza, Egypt, circa 1928, where an archaeological expedition unearths an ancient ring with cryptic hieroglyphs. The film then moves to the present day, where Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) is busily trying to convince a group of skeptics that the pyramids were not built by man, but by an extraterrestrial force. After the lecture, a military man approaches him and offers him a job translating the said ring; its inscriptions actually constitute a map to a massive stargate (or interstellar portal). The army sends over resident crackpot colonel Jack O'Neill (Kurt Russell) to travel through the stargate and see what's on the other side; Jackson accompanies him, and the two men turn up in a desert planet on the other side of the universe, with three moons in its sky. The world in question is ruled by Ra (Jaye Davidson), a hermaphroditic Egyptian sun god, who oppresses hordes of slave workers. Jackson and O'Neill then join forces to help the said workers revolt against their oppressor.

Ra's eyebrow raise when Daniel says, "If I refuse" is the pinnacle of nuance in acting. The slightest movement of the brow said so much right there before he began to speak. That is incredible attention to detail in a performance.

It’s interesting that the casting for the rest of this movie is so generic, but the casting for Ra is so out of the box-and perfect. He’s *so young,* and not traditionally masculine at all.
He’s beautiful and dangerous and sensual and powerful. And again, it’s so surprising that he played the combination of ALL of those traits so perfectly, at such a young age!

As I've gotten older, my appreciation for Ra has grown immensely. 10,000 years he kept the Goa'uld System Lords on a balanced level, warring with one another, but none ever really advancing over their peers and actually posing a threat to him.
Then Earth dials out, blows him up by accident and the entire galactic empire that he had ruled came tumbling down in less than a decade. I really REALLY want an AU where he survives. What an absolutely mesmerizing performance. The whole movie is quite good, but it’s Davidson’s Ra that lifts it up to an all-time classic, the way he moves and speaks is hypnotic, beautiful, and frightening. How he is simultaneously playful and menacing while speaking what is basically nonsense (though with subtitles our brains believe it to be a language) is impressive indeed. Oh what might have been…if he decided to act in other films.

I didn't even know about Stargate the film, when I used to watch the series. So I thought all of the Stargate universe was boring... but THIS... this is something different! One of the very few times when Hollywood plays with truly androgynous imagery - and they make him evil, what a surprise! Not to mention that the "mixed race" aspect is made to look as an embodiment of evil.... It's actually super-attractive, mystical and spiritual (you know that "sinister" only means "the left side" as in female, right? All part of the anti-Pagan campaign, to twist words into evil connotations...). But if you can accept that what you see is not what you get, then maybe Ra felt inferior inside, hence the overblown scheming. The problem is that these Hollywood "heroes" never address the problem (underlying system), they only address the symptom and call it a victorious day.

Daniel is the only person who could cause an uprising again and the only one who can stop this one. With some knowledge of the technology and language, Daniel understands that Ra can kill everyone very quickly and that's what Ra needed him to know. It's not about adding tropes or whatever. The uprising is what caused Ra to flee the first time and he has a way to actually prevent it this time by using Daniel.

Jaye Davidson stole the show from right under the noses of the high-profile seasoned actors employed for this movie. Truly the most outstanding film performance of the decade! If anyone was ever born to play a role on screen, it was this man. It is no wonder at all that his unique presence captivated so many people at the time. Unfortunately in the aftermath, the whole concept of a young earthling being fully 'possessed' by an alien for a particular purpose became lost in the resulting television series that followed the film. It seems the producers lost their nerve when it came to writing for the small screen.

So a slightly different version now than what he said back then, but still quite unexplainably passive. I think it's more interesting when he says that he didn't want to be given any "bad parts", though he would be tempted by money. I would definitely try to explore more what was meant by "bad parts", because Hollywood certainly makes things appear like what they are not, and twists things and people take them as a kind of spiritual authority which is ridiculous, because it's all aimed at making money - while affecting vulnerable parts of society in the process. Such as "black gay men" - so the idea that he "wouldn't get work" is too innocent, when the real problem is how the roles are used by Hollywood to create a false ideology. Some people (like the Maori) can actually reverse this false ideology from within, by improvising their own meanings in a subversive way of acting - why couldn't Jaye have done the same?

In this case, he says he created humanity, and now they have grown powerful, he wants to destroy them. In other words, Ra is evil, and is not afraid to show it.
But the Engineer: nothing. He just kills mister Weyland, and rips off his android's head! In the deleted scene, he basically says that Weyland is an old fart, and needs to die, and that is about all he says.

Why do the gods in HP Lovecraft's stories do the same thing's without any real explanation or anyone bitching about it? And besides, if you ever found something "new" to tell in story telling, it would only last for five minutes until you thought it became cliche. Besides, there's nothing new anymore. EVERY trope and story telling device is known today. I suggest you get used to it.

I was never really that hot on this movie or the TV franchise for that matter. But Ra was awesome. Every time he showed up he dominated the scene with this stark contrast between the androgynous beauty and the completely inhuman voice dripping with malice and superiority.

“In the version of Stargate that we shot, Ra wasn't an alien - he was an ancient Egyptian who worked for the aliens, but because he had been so inebriated, his performance was weird. In test screenings, audiences were like, ‘Can't Kurt Russell just beat the crap out of that person?’”
As a desperate fix, they added the eerie effect to Davidson’s voice and the glow to his eyes - both now indelible to the Goa’uld.
“It worked spectacularly, and our test scores went way up!” ...Devlin

I read an interview with the director that confirms this. He said he showed Jaye the voice and eyes effects in post and Jaye "was in a different place", loved the changes, and was grateful not to be edited out altogether.

This backround music , the character Ra , and the ancient language reconstructions are fantastic. It is unfortunate , that I only discovered this motion picture one and a half year ago. But ever since I am collecting ancient Egyptian course books , such audio samples , and am learning ancient Egyptian.

+Anarchist86ed I am learning Egyptian from academical course books. Of course the pronunciation (especially that of the wovels ) is not known for academical science for sure. But based on my yet very small knowledge of Egyptian , the ancient language reconstructions in this Stargate motion picture ( and in the Mummy and the Mummy Returns ) , made by Dr. Stuart Smith , are a plausible reconstrucion of so-called Middle Egyptian. Anyway , for me, the art and the fantasy in language reconstruction are more important , than 100 % academical correctness.

One thing I always found to be an interesting detail is, we reopened the gate and we brought the bomb. Completely unprovoked. RA has a little bit of ground to stand on here and his first response was "you shouldn't have reopened the gate"

I like to think that in this calm, slow paced scene there's a lot of tension, expressed just by movement and body language: Jackson no longer sees Ra as a god, speaks to him standing still, at his level , while Ra seems like he's trying to seduce, fascinate Jackson, tells him his masterplan, and explains how wants his dominance re asserted. He's almost afraid. How a feeble human.

But once they agreed, I'd say he put in a million dollar performance. ^_^
