Two of my co-workers have Hyundai/Kai products. One just received a new engine in his SUV, while the other has spent more than $10K in repairs in recent months. Buyer beware.
The start of the story, "it was making a noise, and she found the dipstick was bone dry". That suggests that prior to that point, perhaps she did not check the oil consumption regularly. Initial loss could have been over an extended period, but once damage is done, it will only get worse. If that original loss was sudden, the cause would remain, and she'd be adding oil significantly more than 4 litres between changes.
That would be provincial legislation. I understand Ontario has something. Here in BC the car dealers are a powerful political lobby. They were upset that their used car sales had both PST and GST while private ones "only" paid PST. As a result of the car dealers complaints, the province made private sale PST on vehicles the equivalent of regular PST plus GST. So any effort at protecting consumers will get a big push back from this lobby.

Kia Canada would not honor any kind of warranty and the engine had to be replaced by an independent mechanical shop for 5,000 dollars , our cost. I will never purchase or ever recommend a Kia product. Nice looking vehicles but lousy customer service and mechanical design.
Sadly this good record is no garanty for future models. Their quality has also gone down from many mechanics opinions. As an example the Tundra engine. Sure they’ll replace them but it’s still a Pita.
Kia/hyundai are the worst to deal with. Had the same issue a few years ago with my 2017 Sante Fe. They did an oil consumption test and found that burning 800ml every 1000km was within normal range. After going through OMVIC, KIA offered $1000.They failed to give her all the pages from the used car report, the second page stated it was in an accident. KIA and their dealerships SUCK!!
That's a little bit on her. When buying a used car always get at least two independent vehicle history reports yourself, not from the dealer. When I was looking for a used car nine years ago, I was looking at a used Accord in a dealership. The dealer showed me a vehicle accident history report and it looked clean. I pulled up my own report, I think it was AutoCheck. It turned out the car was in a bad crash. So, I went to another place and got another car.
Yea that’s her fault , be better at buying a car and doing research for it , don’t just buy it from the dealer that day cause they showed you some paper 😂
I had a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis. It burned one quart of oil per week. It ran like new, so I just kept adding a quart per week. She should have gone to the dealer as soon as she discovered the oil consumption problem. The engine was already ruined by that time, because she caught it after all the oil leaked or burned out. Checking the oil once per week may have caught it in time. Glad she was able to get a new engine. Poor quality control, poor engineering, poor testing. These are all the fault of the manufacturer. About the only companies making good cars are Honda, Toyota, and Mazda.

He had proof of oil changes and we encouraged him to go to his dealer, call Hyundai customer service. I wrote a letter to Hyundai myself to see if that might help in anyway. They eventually boroscoped the engine and sent off the images to Hyundai. He got a new long block and can now get back and forth to work again. Keep at and put the screws to the manufacturers that have clearly poor quality assurance and design issues. I will personally never own a Hyundai or Kia 4cyl engine.
I fail to understand why a dealer would not work this issue. I worked in the heavy duty truck industry at a dealership. The manufacturer’s warranty repair shop rate was higher per hour than our customer non warranty rate and the manufacturer paid their bill without any song and dance. Warranty was a very good customer. I don’t get it…
Hyundai and Kia have so many issues and not enough replacement motors to fix them all, so their first instinct is to just deny that it's covered in hopes the customer goes away. They're fully aware that many of the engines are defective.

Kia very disappointing especially given she brought the extended warranty. They should have done the oil consumption test when she asked for one. Good news at least Kia replaced the engine.
Guess where the oil goes with high oil consumption. It first foul up the catalytic converter and then it goes into the atmosphere in the form of air pollution.
No surprise, they’re junk. One of the oldest adages - when something sounds too good to be true… The Korean brands pile on the “extras” at an extremely low price, offer ten year warranties, and low financing, so sadly folks are lured in. Another adage, you get what you pay for.
Not really. There are plenty of products out there that are ludicrously overpriced but poor quality and so terrible value. Like anything the answer is as far as possible to do your own background research before you spend your money so you can identify the products that provide genuine value.

Why do manufacturers and dealers respond when they are backed into a corner? My Toyota and Honda never had any oil consumption issues with one of them with 330,000 kms.
Both Kia and Hyundai are actually two of the worst cars in the automotive industry especially in the marketplace, including the mechanical issues with losing oil that could lead to the engine blowing up, electrical issues that often cause fires, transmission issues that causes it struggle while going uphill in the mountains, people often burglarized them because of locking issues with steering column, and tires going bald at ten thousand miles. My best advice is actually don't have the new engine installed by Kia and Hyundai because you will have the same issues, and avoid their dealerships at all costs. I suggest that you start searching online or at local Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Lincoln, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and Volvo dealerships for a consider trade in towards a brand-new vehicle.

There isn't many Korean engine blocks that are solid. Hyundai or Kia. All of them have 3-4 issues that combine to catastrophic failure. Still 146k in 5 years is not light driving. Your cars reliability depends on its power train. What motor and trans. Avoid CVTs, avoid turbos. Honda/Toyota 4 cylinder no cvt, no turbo. Ford 4s or 8s. No 6. Gm LS v8s, duramax/Allison. Kia the worst car brand ever. I remember my first car being a Kia Spectra and nothing but problems like engine misfire, glitchy transmission, key ignition locked up, etc. Ironically the Kia Forte replaced the Spectra too.
I'll never buy Kia or Hyundai. Lower price but less reliable cars. You get what pay you for. I drive a Honda Civic now never had any major problems other than maintenance. I would recommend Japanese like Toyota or Honda over any Korean brand.

But Honda AC problems is killing it. I won't get another honda for sure
Kia has had engine problems for years. Our kia’s engine blew, and it took them more than 1/2 a year to replace it. Turns out we were 10th or 11th in line for an engine swap, & the factory was behind in sending replacements. She better make sure they give her a loaner or supply a rental.
I say get rid of it before the new engine blows
Actually, I heard another new automobile manufacturer would swap the engine for a minor defect.

Where was she 3 years ago. They were literally replacing engines even if the car changed owners 3 times.
Canada needs lemon laws.

My '04 LS430 did mostly highway driving on 100% synthetic oil for 10K miles, had a used oil analysis and was told the engine and oil were in excellent condition. I extended the oil change interval because I didn't have time to change the oil and was curious. Car has about 75K miles on it right now. This happened to my wife 5 years ago who purchased a second hand 2012 Kia Soul. Kia Canada would not honor any kind of warranty and the engine had to be replaced by an independent mechanical shop for 5,000 dollars , our cost. I will never purchase or ever recommend a Kia product. Nice looking vehicles but lousy customer service and mechanical design.
Over 90,000 miles in 5 years or 18,000 miles a year. How often were the oil changes each year?
Dont buy Kia/hyundai! Buy Toyota and call it a day! I've had a corolla, echo, lexus rx350 and now a highlander all were problem free!
This started at 85000km and still under factory warranty. I had several issues with the deer and hyundai Canada.

Thought about getting a Kia Forte. Good thing I stick with my Acura which currently has over 460,000km.
My wife bought a use vehicle from KIA, only to find out two years later when she tried to sell it, that the car was in a major accident and should not of been sold.
So, I went to another place and got another car.
that her fault🤣
Yea that’s her fault , be better at buying a car and doing research for it , don’t just buy it from the dealer that day cause they showed you some paper 😂
I know a few people that once they reached 150k-200k their engines blew on their Kia’s. These cars are all looks, but not reliable.
Nissan was good but now they are a joke.

Exact opposite in the automotive world
Same happened on my Hyundai sonata in calgary, Precision Hyundai asked me bring it in every 1000 km for a check and promised to do something but once i went over 100k asked me to give proof of all appointments and said they don’t cover anything over 100k.I would never buy a Hyundai/kia in my life

This is why I have always been hesitant on anything Kia/Hyundai. As much as I think they have a lot of value...it is quickly offset with quality in not only the vehicle but their customer service.
