Kia owner dismissed over oil consumption issue now needs new engine

- A Kia car owner says she was left at the side of the road by the South Korean automaker - until Consumer Matters got involved.
Jill St. Marie says her vehicle consumes excessive amounts of oil and says the Kia dealership where she purchased her vehicle has informed her she needs a new engine and catalytic converter at a cost of $11,322.80. That includes parts and labour.
“I just paid this car off and all of a sudden my engine is gone. That is unacceptable,” said St. Marie.
St. Marie says when she requested an oil consumption test she was dismissed. “They looked at me as if I was crazy,” she said.
Anne Drewa reports.

Here in BC the car dealers are a powerful political lobby. They were upset that their used car sales had both PST and GST while private ones "only" paid PST. As a result of the car dealers complaints, the province made private sale PST on vehicles the equivalent of regular PST plus GST.

these car companies are a joke
The Kia Forte uses the Hyundai/Kia Theta II engine which is notorious for big end bearing problems, excessive oil consumption and general reliability issues and is subject to class action lawsuits in the US. IIRC the problem was more prevalent in the bigger 2.4L version used in the small crossovers but I know the Forte Sport(?) was also available with the 2.4. The car in this video is the SX with the 2.0 Theta and sadly this one seems affected too. The knocking noise she heard was almost certainly the big end bearings. I would avoid any vehicle with the Hyundai Theta engines. The smaller 1.6 and 1.8 Gamma engines are much more reliable but they also suffer from excessive oil consumption and generally require more maintenance to keep them running well (I have an Accent with the 1.6)
Our 07 Toyota tundra has 307,000 miles. 06 highlander has 357,000 miles. They are daily drivers.
Hell, the Toyota Sienna that took my wife and me to the airport had 460K miles on it. Other than brakes, tires, one water pump, and fluid changes, the car was still operating as new.

Nothing beats a 1989 Astra van my dad had it 17 years had moon miles on it. What a van what a bloke
The start of the story, "it was making a noise, and she found the dipstick was bone dry". That suggests that prior to that point, perhaps she did not check the oil consumption regularly. Initial loss could have been over an extended period, but once damage is done, it will only get worse. If that original loss was sudden, the cause would remain, and she'd be adding oil significantly more than 4 litres between changes.

That's a little bit on her. When buying a used car always get at least two independent vehicle history reports yourself, not from the dealer. When I was looking for a used car nine years ago, I was looking at a used Accord in a dealership. The dealer showed me a vehicle accident history report and it looked clean. We don’t care
People will never learn don’t buy a Kia or Hyundia
No surprise, they’re junk.
One of the oldest adages - when something sounds too good to be true… The Korean brands pile on the “extras” at an extremely low price, offer ten year warranties, and low financing, so sadly folks are lured in.
Another adage, you get what you pay for.
Not really. There are plenty of products out there that are ludicrously overpriced but poor quality and so terrible value. Like anything the answer is as far as possible to do your own background research before you spend your money so you can identify the products that provide genuine value.
Yep been there with my 2002 spectra kia is good for wheezlibg their way out if their warranty repair claims. Look up the aashoke " Peter Butterfield", that prick voided my warranty after 5 transmission replacements ( they just kept rebuilding the same bd unit).
KIA AND HYUNDAI ...Whats worse ...Bad engines...or Bad customer service.!!!
I find this so strange from the other side of the Pacific in Australia.
Kia have some of the greatest customer service around here at the moment. The only ones you see or hear blowing up have been severely abused.
It would be interesting to see a comparison between 2 vehicle's one made in north america the other in south korea.
The only strange thing is that the Ausies think that Kia are ok when they’re not!
There has been more than a million Kia K5s and Hyundai Sonata used as taxis in South Korea and many of them reach 400K kms or more in usage and they have been dependable and been one of the main backbone of the country's public transportation. If I ever buy a Korean car, it would be one of their sedans such as Sonata, Elantra, K5. My father in law stil owns a 2003 Hyundai Granger that still drives relatively smooth. I don't understand how these cars are breaking down so much in Canada. Maybe different environment, and perhaps poorer dealer service, I don't know.
My vin starts with a 'K' meaning it was made in Korea. Engine seized just the same.
@@BklynCapriHow can your Kia engine seize when you've never owned one before?
Ok good to know. I guess my next vehicle is not going to be a kia
