The Kia Forte uses the Hyundai/Kia Theta II engine which is notorious for big end bearing problems, excessive oil consumption and general reliability issues and is subject to class action lawsuits in the US. IIRC the problem was more prevalent in the bigger 2.4L version used in the small crossovers but I know the Forte Sport(?) was also available with the 2.4. The car in this video is the SX with the 2.0 Theta and sadly this one seems affected too. The knocking noise she heard was almost certainly the big end bearings. I would avoid any vehicle with the Hyundai Theta engines. The smaller 1.6 and 1.8 Gamma engines are much more reliable but they also suffer from excessive oil consumption and generally require more maintenance to keep them running well (I have an Accent with the 1.6)

That's a little bit on her. When buying a used car always get at least two independent vehicle history reports yourself, not from the dealer. When I was looking for a used car nine years ago, I was looking at a used Accord in a dealership. The dealer showed me a vehicle accident history report and it looked clean. I pulled up my own report, I think it was AutoCheck. It turned out the car was in a bad crash. So, I went to another place and got another car.

I had a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis. It burned one quart of oil per week. It ran like new, so I just kept adding a quart per week.
She should have gone to the dealer as soon as she discovered the oil consumption problem. The engine was already ruined by that time, because she caught it after all the oil leaked or burned out. Checking the oil once per week may have caught it in time. Glad she was able to get a new engine.
Poor quality control, poor engineering, poor testing. These are all the fault of the manufacturer. About the only companies making good cars are Honda, Toyota, and Mazda.

My best advice is actually don't have the new engine installed by Kia and Hyundai because you will have the same issues, and avoid their dealerships at all costs. I suggest that you start searching online or at local Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Lincoln, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, and Volvo dealerships for a consider trade in towards a brand-new vehicle.
