Night Trap was equally responsible for the ratings system. There was a time when you could turn on the news and were guaranteed to see gameplay videos of both Night Trap and Mortal Kombat. In fact they used to play the same clip of Night Trap a lot. The Augers would close in around a girl and then the clip would end and they implied it got worse from there. When in reality all the augers did was drag the girl off camera. At that time the news helped sell a ton of copies of Night Trap, which if not for the controversy it would have just disappeared unnoticed. The gameplay was terrible even for a fmv game. Also as far as Street Fighter 2 combos go at once point Capcom looked at combos as a glitch giving players what they thought of as an unfair advantage. The same with move canceling which are now staples of fighting games.
We have to add in: Dune II (for pioneer of real time strategy game), Angry Birds (spark a popularity on Smartphone gaming), Candy Crush (contributed the height of matching puzzle games), Virtual Fighters (marking the new chapter of 3D fighting games), Fire Emblem (for turn based strategy games), Flight Stimulator (which later influencing Wing Commander, Aces Of Europe, Ace Combat etc), Alone In The Dark (pioneer of Survival horror), Romance Of Three Kingdom (pioneer of all strategy games), Double Dragon (pioneer of all action games, particularly brawler games), Contra (influence of run and gun games), Space Invader (influence of all shooting games, especially Raiden or Aero Fighters), Gauntlet (pioneer of hack and slash RPG, largely influenced by Dungeons And Dragons), Football Manager (pioneer of soccer management game) , F1 (pioneer of racing games), WCW Vs NWO World Tour (the game that redefine wrestling games)
I feel that Wolfenstein 3D should have at least had a nod to it here. Without it, Doom, Half-Life, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo, and others wouldn't have come along when they did. It single-handedly created the FPS genre!
I'm surprised pokemon wasn't in this list. There's a reason those types of games are so successful and I believe that Nintendo knows why. The idea of a turn based training game was great, and like the tomagatchi portable. Many companies make clones, hack roms, and references to the games since the first on the game boy.
@@DanBrown4114 It wasn't so much the battle gameplay that was revolutionary, but the collection and team building, as well as having to socialize in real life to trade between versions and all the playground rumors on secret Pokemon... plus it sparked an entire media franchise.

Bioshock was literally one of the favorite parts of my childhood, I used to watch my dad play it. I used to love when you could save the children and help them crawl into the hole where they’re safe from harm-
I'm shocked that Symphony of the Night wasn't here, especially since it pretty much invented a new genre altogether. And what about Dragon Quest...the grandfather of JRPGs that kicked things off in the first place? The list is great though!
The genre already existed with the Metroid games (hence why it's called "Metroid anus"). What SoTN did was add rpg elements, like leveling up and buying equipment to increase stats.
Very surprised Star Fox 64 wasn't even mentioned for introducing a feature that's so engraved in gaming, and is the main reason why we have DualShock, and basically one of the main gimmicks of the Nintendo Switch Joycon and PlayStation 5 DualSense.
I start with Sears Pong (1975) and played most of these games. I played text only games. Then we got 2D graphics in monochrome. Then 3D in 4 colors, followed by 16 colors. Storage went from 180K to 360K. RAM finally made it to 64K. Online speed (telephone) of 300 baud (aka bps) to 1200 bps. God, I’m old.
With all due respect to Final Fantasy VII, which is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, but without the influence of the first Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest), most turn based RPGs, especially Final Fantasy, wouldn't even exist.

System Shock 2 and Deus EX predated Bioshock by many years. They were the spiritual predecessors, the game changers of that genre...and they are arguably the better games. The former might very well remain the best and most frightening game I've ever played.
@@benw3029 The first System Shock came out in 1994. That made it a pre-Windows 95 game...so it came with the limitations therein...bad resolution, non-standard FPS controls of keyboard and mouse, etc. Importantly, the late 90s were when hardware accelerated graphics (VooDoo cards) raised the standards of gaming as we know it. System Shock 2 was 1999 and it made great use of that technology. And to me, that made the game MUCH more immersive. In truth, I only played a little of the first game AFTER playing SS2, and thus I can't really say much about it other than the above recollection. So, to me, it's like playing Wolfenstein 3D vs. Quake. But I do know that from a story standpoint, the original was highly-regarded. Because of that, there is an "enhanced version" of that title produced in 2015 that got an 86 on Metacritic and seems to have some positive reviews, but I can't say personally. It's supposed to fix the FPS controls, increased the resolution, and basically make the game playable on modern systems. The same company that did the remake, Night Dive Studios, was supposed to be working on a total redo of the game based on the Unreal 4 engine, but I haven't heard much about progress on that...if at all. Incidently, System Shock 2 is a 92 on Metacritic by comparison. I played that game several times back in the day choosing different RPG styles each time...it was just so brilliant. I'd LOVE a System Shock 3, which was also rumored at one point, but who knows if any of that will come out. BTW, a note about Deus Ex which came out in 2000. It was amazing, even winning PCGamer Magazines Game of the Year. But the sequels disappointed me greatly because they were ports from the console versions (I'm a PC gamer). I was so let down by that.
@@jayballauer8353 I’ve put some time into the enhanced edition, still not sure how I feel about it haha the controls are pretty trash still though. There’s a free demo of the remake available, that looks and feels promising. Have yet to play SS2 though but I own it so it’s only a matter of time

People seem to forget that without DooM/Quake Valve and Steam may not be what they are today. Gabes first gaming job, porting DooM to Windows 95. Gabes blockbuster game, uses a modified Quake engine. It's crazy to think without Carmack we wouldn't have many of the best FPSs in the genre not just ones he helped make.
Call of duty 4 modern warfare has influence on the fps genre so it deserved an honorable mention. Call of duty may not be in a good state now but that game deserved a shout out
Wolfenstein is definitely missing, Metal Gear could deserve a spot since its one of he first movie driven style video game as far as the narrative goes
Killer Instinct one of the First Fighters, that relied on a Combo system, & one of the First Fighters where you beat your opponent to death with Ultra Combos. 😳
Mario taking the top two spots just goes to show just how brilliant Nintendo is with their most popular character. Awesome list in general too. I think Sonic the Hedgehog could have been potentially an honorable mention but it makes sense that he doesn't make the list just because there had already been so many influential platformers.
Civilization and Bejewelled would be my choices alongside a racing game or Space Invaders. Civ for the significant contribution to the strategy genre, Bejewelled because of the massive impact on mobile gaming and a racing game because that's a pretty important genre that doesn't often pop above the radar of gaming commentators.
Gonna have to correct you there Watchmojo about the whole Batman thing, Spiderman 2 the movie the game did the whole reflective combo style combat first and it was open world
This is my honorable mentions: 1. Ragnarok Online - This is basically the World Of Warcraft situation in this list but here in Asia region. It not only pioneered the “free” MMORPG in Asia (way before WOW was created) but also it is one of the many gateways of Korean game developers to the international scene aside from K-Pop. 2. Fate/Stay Night - there are alot of visual novel games before this game but this one takes the credit for making the visual novels in the int’l. Scene super cool. 3-4. DOTA and League of Legends - it not only popularize a new kind of multiplayer game called MOBA but also helped skyrocketed the online E-Sports scene in international community and to the extension exploits E-Sports in general in traditional media.
Metal Gear Solid isusually Number 1 in lists.. uh it's not even on this list? Why? It pretty much reinvented the stealth games, all future story telling in games, and gameplay mechanics that quite literally broke the 4th wall...
I'm proud to say I had each of these games around the time of their original release with the only exception of --- not Pong (my family had a sit-down table with Pong in it) Final Fantasy 7... boy, does that make me feel old
If the list is "revolutionized how we play" Doom should have been higher on the list - in a year and a half span the number of home computers tripled because everybody wanted to play the game. Otherwise for all the comments like "I'm surprised ===== wasn't on the list!" - the list is only a top 20 and its all in their opinion: I could probably come up with another 20 games off the top of my head that weren't on this list that should have been. They can't list them and even if they did a "Top 100..." or "Top 500" those would be ridiculously long that very few would watch and there'd still be stuff "missing" from the list.
Even before _Doom_ tripled the sales of IBM (compatible) PCs, indie games were being made on computers like the Commodore 64 around a decade earlier. Back in those days, people published their games listings in magazines or books for other people to type out and play. If you want some honourable mentions, there's _Zork_ for popularising the text adventure genre (from which the visual novel spawned) and _Rogue_ from which the Rogue-like and Rogue-lite genres spawned-notable for having procedurally generated maps.
I think fnaf (2014) is a honorable mention because it redefined the scare factor in point and click games as well as brought a fresh wave of horror back energy everyone was on the slenderman fever

Resident evil been going for almost 30 years. It pioneered survival horror and completely redefined 3rd person shooters with an over the shoulder perspective that is still implemented to this day. How did Resident Evil not make the list?
A metal gear game should of been on here. The franchise has had so many impacts on the industry. Basically invented and popularised the stealth industry Was one of the earliest games to focus on the story Metal gear solid 2 was the first game with a particular ai element that alot of games now use (if i remember correctly something to do with how the enemy ai can move freely, not being set on predetermined pathways but it's been a while since I read about this so might be wrong about the specific detail)
No quake which pioneered 3d modeling, no deus ex which was one of the first wildly popular fps/rpg, no unreal which literally still influences almost every genre to this day with its engine and unreal tournament with polished online fps multi-player to a degree never seen before. Mostly they stole ideas while Doing it. Even Gunpei Yokoi said: "The Nintendo way of adapting technology is not to look for the state of the art but to utilize mature technology that can be mass-produced cheaply."
Great video as always! I was so sure I would see Diablo on this list. Some people call it ARPG, Hack n' Slash RPG... and some call it "diablo-like" games. Also, Dark (Demon) Souls did reinvented gaming in a strong way imo.
Resident evil. That game easily should have made this list. It smashed open the door for survival horror games. Mario kart games. Once again. That game reinvented the whole battle carts type game. I’m sure there are several others I’m presently forgetting.

Truth is, so many games helped change and pioneer the gaming industry. I mean resident evil, Pokémon, Gran Turismo, etc. this list would be and should be a lot bigger than 20 game.
Tbh Assasins creed should be in here as well, it basically made the whole parcour stuff very popular. Many others games tried to follow that for example Uncharted and Tomb Raider remake and also a little bit Breath of the wild.
Dune II should have made it to this list, or at least get a honorable mention.
If I remember right, the news used to say their was nudity in it too
We have to add in:

Angry Birds (spark a popularity on Smartphone gaming),
Candy Crush (contributed the height of matching puzzle games),
Virtual Fighters (marking the new chapter of 3D fighting games),

Space Invader (influence of all shooting games, especially Raiden or Aero Fighters),
Gauntlet (pioneer of hack and slash RPG, largely influenced by Dungeons And Dragons),
Football Manager (pioneer of soccer management game) ,
F1 (pioneer of racing games),
WCW Vs NWO World Tour (the game that redefine wrestling games)

No Meteal Gear, That Basiclly turned games into interactive movies
I feel that Wolfenstein 3D should have at least had a nod to it here. Without it, Doom, Half-Life, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Halo, and others wouldn't have come along when they did. It single-handedly created the FPS genre!
Agreed
I'm surprised pokemon wasn't in this list. There's a reason those types of games are so successful and I believe that Nintendo knows why. The idea of a turn based training game was great, and like the tomagatchi portable. Many companies make clones, hack roms, and references to the games since the first on the game boy.
Pokemon is just an RPG lol
@@DanBrown4114 It wasn't so much the battle gameplay that was revolutionary, but the collection and team building, as well as having to socialize in real life to trade between versions and all the playground rumors on secret Pokemon... plus it sparked an entire media franchise.
This had to be a tough list to make because there’s bound to be a lot of exclusions:
- Pokémon
- Demon Souls
- Diablo 2
- Mario Kart
- PUBG
- Rogue
- Wii Sports
- StarCraft
- Guitar Hero
- Metal Gear Solid
what about dark souls. it basically defined this past decade of gaming, created a whole new genre (soulslike), and was awarded best game ever.
There is Dead rising
Ninja Gaiden on Xbox predates the souls games
I wish fallout 3 or New Vegas were on the list it made a new element of combining fps and rpg mechanics to make something great Edit: I forgot to say it combined open world gaming

The entire ‘Mortal Kombat’ franchise will be turning 30 starting this fall.
Bioshock was literally one of the favorite parts of my childhood, I used to watch my dad play it.
I used to love when you could save the children and help them crawl into the hole where they’re safe from harm-
your dad play bioshock? my god i should be having a kid by now...sad life
MGS for cinematic experiences in video games and setting the bar for quality voice acting.
SotN wasn't the first metroidvania. And it's Dragon Warrior on NES
I started with a Tandy pong clone then got a VIC20 when they came out.
How can you not have metal gear solid on a list about reinventing games?
It could've been No. 21. I know what you mean.
Where’s Shenmue or Metal Gear Solid? If it weren’t for Shenmue, we wouldn’t have the open world formula we have today.
Shenmue is more influential and innovative than literally half the games on this list, lol.
With all due respect to Final Fantasy VII, which is one of my favorite RPGs of all time, but without the influence of the first Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest), most turn based RPGs, especially Final Fantasy, wouldn't even exist.
Maybe J-RPGs….western RPGs will always be influenced by D&D
Yeah I was shocked Dragon Quest wasn't listed extremely high up. But no let's have 2 mario entries..... sigh
@@karamei what's wrong with having those two mario games on the list? ignoring SMB and SM64's sheer impact on the future of gaming is straight up incorrect.

I think we should expand it to top 25 and include Metal Gear Solid, Deus Ex, Fallout, Resident Evil (Biohazard), and Starcraft. Also replace Bioshock with System Shock 2.
I've never played the System Shock games but I've heard about them and when Bioshock popped up I thought "System Shock should have been here instead"

Final Fantasy 7 was challenging as hell at first.
If Valve ever want to bless us by completing the Half-Life trilogy, they should remake the first 2 games and add some of the additions they added to Half-Life Alyx.
Imagine Half Life 1 Reworked in VR? Holy shit, that actually would be so dope to explore Black Mesa like that
FF7 is still after almost 25 years my all time favorite game...Mass Effect came close to taking it's place but not quite..u guys got it way to low on the list though it should be at the very least top ten...God i miss those days ..92-2007 is the golden age of video games for me
Pong should be number one or two. Pong is the game that singlehandedly made gaming popular in the first place
and super Mario bros. And Mario 64 should be switched imo
Mines is pokemon gold and silver, God of war, Sonic the hedgehog, x men legends 2, marvel vs Capcom, x men children of the atom, donkey Kong country, MegaMan 5 , resident evil 2 and 4, crash bandicoot, Spyro, shemune, streets of rage/ final fight, Wii sports, super smash Brothers, rocket league, Gran Turismo / ridge Racer
Dark Souls... What you said about FPS games being called Doom Clones is pretty much similar to what's happening with Soulslike games
System Shock 2 and Deus EX predated Bioshock by many years. They were the spiritual predecessors, the game changers of that genre...and they are arguably the better games. The former might very well remain the best and most frightening game I've ever played.
I've never played System Shock 2 but I think Bioshock is slightly overrated. Yes it's a great game but I agree with the Deus Ex games being better.
yeah system shock 2 definitlity missing :)
How do you feel about system shock 1 if you’ve played it?
Have yet to play SS2 though but I own it so it’s only a matter of time
Yeah Mario 64 was the right choice for #1. That game has been Iconic to me ever since I played it on Christmas morning in 1996.
Always and Forever Mario 64!
Regenerating health no. Regenerative shields yes. You still had to pick up health kits when you health was low so you know you don’t die.
Reminds me of the old call of duty games
where in the first game, you had pick up health kits so you dont die
while in the second game, when you see alot of blood on your screen, you just need to take cover and youll be fine
I really hate the regenerative health. So much that it's not exciting to know the enemy you hit is hiding and waiting to regenerate.

Mario Kart deserved to be on this list as did Space Invaders, Vitua Fighter, Shenmue, Sim City, Dragon Quest, Contra, Double Dragon and a bunch of others that I'm probably forgetting.
Glad to see mortal kombat, goldeneye, and final fantasy. But you have to add a sports game as it's one of the biggest genre's every year, 2k/madden/fifa. Also a racing game like Gran turismo 2.

I would add these games to this list: Resident Evil 4, Gears Of War, Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Crysis, Dark Souls
WoW was kind of my first game being able to interact and play with people from all over the world and so fun it pretty much ended any version of reality for years.
This list needs a Resindent Evil for making Survivor horror what it is and Resindent Evil 4 for 3.rd person shooting
Super Smash Bros inspired games like PlayStation All Stars, Nickelodeon All Star Brawl and crossover fighters
It also combined 2-D fighters and platform games.
Call of duty 4 modern warfare has influence on the fps genre so it deserved an honorable mention. Call of duty may not be in a good state now but that game deserved a shout out

Wolfenstein is definitely missing,
Metal Gear could deserve a spot since its one of he first movie driven style video game as far as the narrative goes
Killer Instinct one of the First Fighters, that relied on a Combo system, & one of the First Fighters where you beat your opponent to death with Ultra Combos. 😳
KI is a 2d fighter
I love KI but it didn't belong in this list. Street Fighter did.
Mario taking the top two spots just goes to show just how brilliant Nintendo is with their most popular character. Awesome list in general too. I think Sonic the Hedgehog could have been potentially an honorable mention but it makes sense that he doesn't make the list just because there had already been so many influential platformers.
Space Invaders was one of the first imported games from Japan. It opened up the doors for western audiences to see how good games from Japan were.
Gonna have to correct you there Watchmojo about the whole Batman thing, Spiderman 2 the movie the game did the whole reflective combo style combat first and it was open world
This is my honorable mentions:
Definitely Golden eye 007 and Halo Combat evolved and Super Mario 64
Forgot about the Twisted Metal series and the Carmageddon series I think these games were highly influential as well love the videos and information.
It's downright criminal to not recognize 'Space Invaders' in a list like this.
I think fnaf (2014) is a honorable mention because it redefined the scare factor in point and click games as well as brought a fresh wave of horror back energy everyone was on the slenderman fever
@@getwhatdeserve5039 not really my point cause pt is sides rolling and fnaf is point and click, but anyways did you know there’s a four day gap between the fnaf game release and PT game release, that’s crazy tbh
There should be an entry for Dune II for practically inventing the Real Time Strategy genre.
DOTA for being the pioneer for MOBAs which is very popular now.
Maybe an honorable mention for Sierra / Lucasarts games for graphic adventure games?
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter or Wing Commander for cinematic space combat sims?

Street Fighter 4 (2.5D fighting Games)
Guilty Gear Xrd (Cell shaded graphics for fighting games)
Marvel VS Capcom 2 New Age Of Heroes or Tekken 3 are my choices

Dune II should have made it to this list, or at least get a honorable mention. It created the template that led to games such as Command & Conquer (which could also make it to this list with ease) War/Starcraft or Age of Empires. Also I miss a mention of Sid Meier Games (Civilization, SimCity), as they created a new gametype and several clones.
