There is nothing in this video that definately proves that the second engine was a 2-bolt to 4-bolt conversion. The only thing that can likely be said is that the second engine probably has been line honed and even that isn't absolute. the second engine might just have alot less miles on it compared to the first engine and as for the way the passages are machine that may be as simple as differences in who did the machining and at what factory.
does any 2 bolt blocks have the external oil lines from the factory? I got a whole 350 and I need to see if it's a 2 or 4 bolt but I don't have anything to pick it up right now to take the pan off.
I'm converting my 4 bolt to a 2 bolt, or maybe stop halfway in between with a 3 bolt and a nut. Line hone should be a standard rebuilding or even an original detail for a great block.
@@racer67. All big block Chevy cylinder blocks are cast for 4 bolt main caps, the extra cast iron is in the main webbing and is easily seen when looking below, block upside down on the engine stand, the main cap mating surface. I’m a retired machinist and have taken 4 bolt caps from a unrepairable block and installed them on a BBC 2 bolt block.
I dont think you know what your talking about!!!! I have a 010 factory 4 bolt main block.. It doesnt have any external oil passages ... Think you might want to get an expert to teach you about engines!!! Also anytime you have a block machined it is decked, line honed... Everything has to be true and in spec....
This is not 100% reliable information. There are many 305 engines that are two bolt that have the oil galley tap on the front over the timing cover. An engine rebuilt by someone worth their salt will be ALIGN honed at the machine shop. to verify true alignment with the deck of the block. Not all engine blocks have those passageways, 2 bolt or 4 bolt. Likewise, there are two bolt blocks that have the passage you show. You do not differentiate between small block and big block. It appears that you are showing a big block. It makes a difference!
I know this is 10 year old thread but on a BBC block you can’t tell by numbers because all BBC blocks are cast with the extra cast iron in the main webbing for the two outside bolts. The main caps, 2 & 4 bolt, are the same width and therefore can be interchanged, you just have to perform the proper machine work. The only exception is some of the very early blocks which are probably long gone out of existence.
thanks for the class i'm about to get my 2 bolt turn to a 4 bolt main thanks again
Great info!! Thanks.
I would never build a performance engine without scrutinizing the main bearing bore, which almost always results in a light main bore hone.
@badslabber There is no real disadvantage, but if your going to convert a 2 bolt to a 4 bolt be sure to go with a splayed cap conversion...
Splayed are stronger but it isnt necessary.
@@naui_diver9290 you are right !
Good afternoon to all from SE Louisiana 21 Jan 22.

Man this video could have been half as long if he didn't talk so damn slow. Dragging it out
Take it slowww 😂😂😂

As long as I have been a mechanic I did not know you can make a 4 bolts out of a 2 bolts?????????

2 bolts main on bb can make 700hp without issues sb up to 500hp. Then again mashining for 4 bolts is inexpensive

010 is a small block if you know your blocks you would know this is a big block.
thats bbc not sbc

dude listen i wouldnt run a block without a line home. any good machinist makes sure the caps are honed straight. gees get a life
I believe you can tell just by the numbers.
