Absolutely stunning as always! The sound has blossomed so much since we built it together! I cannot wait for upcoming projects!
You’re a cool dude :) thanks for participating in such a wonderful video!
You're awesome would love to see more guitar making videos even without Rob in them
Marshall -- I'm surprised that your comment didn't get more engagement, but as someone who never really got to see an intimate kind of look into that world, thank you so much for showing that to me, and to us all.
It may be the day to day for you -- I know I have cool things I work with that are mundane to me now. I'm reminded of how cool they are when new people come in and are eyes-wide open "woah" about it. Human nature to get adjusted to the most beautiful things, I suppose. I guess I have more to learn on being like a child with eyes wide open every day.
But regardless, that kind of peek into the life of what you build... Sure, one could say it adds to visibility, and it does, and that's a good thing, I guess! But the vulnerability of showing all of the beautiful internals of the process, and the craftsmanship of what makes a thing a thing... Maybe the guitars I hold are more mass produced, but if and when I get to handle a real piece of art, I get to have more care and love for it than I would before knowing how such a piece is built with such love.
I'll think about the woods, saved for years and years, the textures of tone and resonation from the tiniest changes in the orientation of the braces on the front plate (sorry for botching terms). I'll think about the patient, tricky process of heat steaming things into the right shape for the body. All of the details that make it an exceptional piece.
I am blessed to share a work room with an accomplished jazz guitarist who daylights as a ML researcher. I get to hear him create and ideate, and knowing that piece of the picture is the difference between sharing a dinner with a new stranger, or a well known friend of a few decades.
Not to exclusively place craftsmanship above all. I gave a dear friend of mine a guitar because I felt she'd love it, and it seemed like it was made for her. Someone had painted a sunflower onto the surface around the hole -- no lacquer or anything. One of the tuning nuts was broken. No strings, of course, to speak of really.
She and I had a long conversation as I restrung it -- it was the first time she and I had talked for a while, really. I had no bridge, so I took an old HSA card from my wallet and cut it in two as a shim bridge. I told her about the nuts and how she'd go about getting new ones, and maybe to lacquer it up to keep it safe.
She replaced them later, and I don't think we've gotten the pickups or the tuner working yet between us. But it's been a few months and I think that card piece is in there to stay. A good place for it to rest.
She and I both like things with texture and meaning -- something that has a story. Having the story for the finest pieces of craftsmanship in guitars helps me to love them more than "wow, that is expensive!" To me, I think I understand why.
Both the "broken" guitar and the masterfully perfect one have different levels of meaning for me, but the story is what makes it valuable. So thank you for taking the time to share your story through Rob to us, and if you read this far, thank you for letting me share mine to you. ☺️🙂👍
You sir, are an outstanding craftsman.
Also, had me laughing with the high five bit in the full video, not gonna lie.
Was expecting a Rammstein cover of some sort...
Was not disappointed though.
Scallon the Deliverer!
Haha same
Yup same here, not disappointed as well... niced played :D
Wait, it’s not?

Man, everytime I look at your guitar I just think of the work put into it
Totally! That video helped me appreciate the work put into building ANY guitar.
All those hours of French polishing and precise woodwork. Makes me respect classical luthiery in a totally different way
@@travisnorman all instruments for that matter, it’s a serious art
You know what I like about you? You aren't just a youtuber showing off robotic speed and chops. You're an actual musician. Beautiful man. Even with the rattle on the low string...kinda sitarishish 👍
Yeah. A lot of the new youtube guitarists, though VERY talented, throw in loads of notes with cool sounding chords, harmonics, and all sorts of stuff......and somehow manage to just sound like a bunch of in-tune noise. I think Rudy Ayoub said it best when he pointed out that they are complex, but don't tell a story with their music. There is nothing coherent to follow. Rests and dead space are just as important as the notes when telling a story.
Those classical guitars can be rattle-y when you pluck too hard. It's about finesse lol
@@TommyNitro As Debussy famously said, “Music is the space between the notes”
@@kevin_lee_music it’s supposed to be, classical guitars replicate a “0” fret, meaning that the open strings always sound fretted and therefore they buzz a little bit :)
Like I was saying the people he meets always seem impressed with his creativity.
Mad respect for doing a perfect one-take playthrough of a near 7 minute long song.
I always have a hard time watching Rob explain things and then watching Rob play songs for real. When he plays for real, he exposes a side of him that's so personal I feel like I shouldn't be seeing it.
There's something so bittersweet about this song and so many others that Rob has written. It's incredible how fast I get completely lost in both the sounds and the daydreams those sounds elicit. I end up in places that I could use thousands of words to try and describe, yet not quite convey the feeling of.
I see, you know i find it so intriguing that that's what people get from this. Because I can't seem to understand this music, can't find the tension or release. Though when I picture your comment I would think I'm listening to some Chopin.
@@kenz2756 to me, it’s the entirety of a conversational relationship with someone through time. Harmony, quiet resolve, building tension at points, dissonance even, but a strong resolve in the end as the overarching theme of the relationship. Maybe the name Mutter is part of that for me.
@@srfokay That's why I find it so intriguing, because to be honest i find the arpeggios especially in this track to sound crap. I can't enjoy this type of music for some reason. I mean it's not that i don't like dissonance, i like a lot of jazz forms, just not the overly complex ones, but i wouldn't say this song is that complex.

My favourite thing bout rob is how he always blows away the people he meets because he’s a real musician and a smart guy and not just an entertainer.

The Bible is truth
The problem is it’s not something you can figure out by 20. There’s serious inner work that has to be done, and can only be done by an adult. It’s not until we’re in our 20’s that the real temptation of sin really starts. You have to understand what resisting sin means for you personally. Then breaking down before Jesus Christ and asking for forgiveness means something different. Please trust me. It’s in our inner healing, forgiveness specifically, that the truth of God and the Bible are revealed. Jesus Christ taught that to be forgiven we must forgive. So few knew of it’s importance because there’s this widespread perception that everyone either knows by upbringing or friends etc. So few ever read the first book of either testament. Considering what’s at stake, shouldn’t you personally know what is really taught?
Please read at least three books of the Bible. Genesis, Mathew, and one you chose yourself. Bible books are more like pamphlets in size, barely a chapter of Harry Potter. Please, see for yourself what I mean. Open your heart to forgiveness from the lord and give it to others.
Jesus Christ is the way truth and life.
I don't know why but when I first heard this song I started crying. I've recently lost a friend against cancer. He always played acoustic guitar and when i hear this i sometimes think about him. Thanks for the beautiful song. It honestly made me think that i need to enjoy time with the people around me. ❤️❤️
sorry for your loss my friend, its good to appreciate and remember the people you loved in your life Especially through music. it's a good way to cope with it. He or she always be by your side.
@@Top5cring absolutely. Music is a big part in life🙏🏻
I was thinking this was a cover of Rammsteins Mutter. Boy wasn’t I wrong lol
Exact same thought!
Same here
Same
so you was right?
Same, would be cool tho
Rob, you have no idea how much this song means to me. Even after I leave this comment, you will still only have a faint idea. This song got me through the toughest times in my life. Just when things seemed to be hopeless, when things were dark and the path wasn’t very clear, this song was there to provide a light through the dark caverns of life. It got me through the worst breakup I’ve ever been through, and it carried me all the way to the next relationship. Not only did this song help me emotionally, It also drastically improved my guitar playing skills. Without Mutter or Heard Again, I would not be the guitar player I am today. Having this song appear in my feed this morning was exactly what i needed right now. Thank you so much for existing and making music. ❤️
It really does give that whole everything is going to be alright vibe doesn't it.
@@eddiejackson1566 it really does
I was just feeling so down and alone and lost before I saw this video in my recommendations. I meant to just put it on while I got ready to leave the house but I wound up sitting down, closing my eyes, and crying. This song feels like a hug from someone saying "It's okay. Be sad. Let go." and letting you sob into their shirt. Thanks.
I remember the first time he uploaded this song and there’s something bittersweet about hearing it now. I love how this song was why I got into playing guitar.
That’s awesome! I hope your playing keeps improving! Stick to it!
I get the second half of this song stuck in my head a lot. The chord transitions and melody as a whole are just beautiful. One of my favourites of yours for sure man 🤘
Rob, listen: more of this please. Yes you could bring in a drummer with brushes and a stand up bass player. But take your music seriously because you should. You've got some really nice (natural) melodic lines. Thank you for sharing this, I am hoping that I'll see more of this type of upload from you. Cheers.
Check out his old stuff from the winter's months and anchor you won't be disappointed
i second this
for real
Hey Rob, I've been listening to mutter constantly since your guitar build, is there any chance this version will make it to Spotify?
Same question
its on there just looked and downloaded lol amazing
Awesome... Reminds me the oldest Rob’s videos. Brings dreamy and nostalgic mood, perfect for listening at night thinking about life
After a day of hardship looking after my 1 year old toddler, I've escaped to the bathroom for 2 minutes of peace and this video was dearly needed... Thank you Rob ❤️
7 minutes of peace 😁
Damn, this song is almost a decade old.
That hit me real hard. Maybe it's because I've been feeling very depressed and hopeless lately. The performance was objectively beautiful and I appreciate your approach to this platform and music as a whole.
Hope you're better now. If you feel the need to speak to a stranger without judgment, send a message my way.
I've been there and I got better, you will too!
Mutter has been on my sleep playlist for yeeears, and This Week is another great one!
Bring back Midwest Emo Rob from 'The Ride Home' era too!
this is my favorite song ever made, it inspired me to try and play guitar like rob does, and opened my mind to such a vast world of styles of guitar I never new existed, all I can say to rob is thank you

This is some moving, calming, bittersweet genius stuff right here.
I don’t ever comment but this song brought back some of the most precious and painful memories I’ve had. I cried listening to it and I just wanted to thank you for it. I wish I was good enough to play this piece myself but until I get there I’ll leave playing this to the maestro. Thank you so much for this

to everybody who gets boring....learn how pain feels like and then listen to it again! absolute amazing Rob! greetings from northern germany
It's melancholy at best, and overemotional at worst. It sounds like a host of songs that people like to like, if that makes sense to you. It's like modern art, praise it all you want, it's still just a line on some canvas
@@johnr.timmers2297 maybe your right^^ it did touch me ;) greets from germany :)
I love “real” sound with imperfections. Gave me chills
So beautiful, somehow this brings me back memories when the life was easier and simple, thanks for this Rob
0:01 It's so nice of Rob to play those harmonics rigth in the beggining so we can easily catch how the guitar is tuned
Sublime...just what I needed right now to bring me peace.
The emotions.. dude this is true musicianship
I listened to this song on repeat while reading Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. The two are linked forever in my mind plus this song is on my anxiety playlist.
Thank you for gifting us all your art! 💜💜💜
Nice idea of anxiety playlist, I'm stealing that
Absolutely. Amazing.
Thank you for giving me more hope and motivation with your music
Watching the entire build process of this guitar really does make you appreciate the sound even more
First listened to this two years ago then decided to learn it. Playing each section provided a sense of catharsis, a release of emotions that even almost brought me to tears. Such a wonderful piece of music.
Absolutely incredible
My favorite song of yours. So cleverly composed with the tuning and harmonics. Beautiful.
Look at his face, That is pure happiness
So very emotional. Really makes you think back to certain times in your life, memories, loved ones lost...
It sounds so good :) I'm sure it feels even better for you hearing something so good coming from something you helped build.
4:03 Man really love what you've done there. I reacently had my school graduation thing and played Rain on the Stage. My biggest and most successful performance yet. After 3 Months people still give me compliments for that and my nickname became Scallon for alot of people😂 Thank you man, love your art😉👉🏻
This man’s musical feel is impeccable
I love the way this piece builds. It's absolutely beautiful
Always a pleasure Rob, I've started treating your videos like mini concerts at my desk XD
It's quite cool to see the small bits of wear that have developed on your guitar as compared to when you first finished it, particularly on the fretboard
Beautiful, simple and soulful.
Some lines there are so melodic and sweet. Cinematic stuff
Just beautiful
Beautiful.
My expectations were like: It should sound like a Rammstein cover. But this is great!
YESSSSS I LOVED THE OLD VERSION THE NEW ONE IS EVEN BETTER THANKS ROB!!
Beautiful. Felt every single note. Wonderful to hear in this amazing guitar also.
a tear ran down my cheek.
this song is really moving. thank you!
Thank you for blessing my ears today Rob.
Ever since I first heard the song in mid 2019 I took into appreciation of it and even tried to learn it. And now the RUclips video for the song is about to be 10 years old. I’m glad Rob is playing his old songs again. :)
Absolutely amazing performance.👏👍😉😁❤💛💚
such a beautiful song
something about this song just gives me peace, it sooths me, one of the greatest songs I have ever listened to and I cant stop listening to it.
Excellent arrangement. Excellent performance. Excellent recording. Thank you for the music
Beautifully done,, Classically based music that tells a story needs to make a comeback for sure
Thank you Rob for this version, this is one of my fav songs, i loved listening to it again, you are the best.
This is a comforting sound.
beautiful, I think you are able to let us feel what you feel, and that's the best thing a musician can do.
Mindblowing and breathtaking.
not ne expecting a Rammstein cover 😅
I clicked because I thought it was a cover of that song...
Same case for me ^^
Me three 🤣
I don’t know Rammstein’s catalog, so I’ll just treat this as an acoustic Rammstein cover...
Love this song from back in the day
There's just a natural beauty to working an acoustic so intricately and lovingly as opposed to electric shredding all day. Really really beautiful stuff
After reading all the comments i think you should do a cover of Rammstein's Mutter next.. Maybe with Sarah Longfield and Ukuleles?
how beautiful Rob! It really takes me back to when this song was first released. Stunning performance
so beautiful
Beautiful
Thank you rob, I need it ❤️
- . . . Brought tears to my eyes.
Such a beautiful piece. I always say that songs you can fall asleep to, are the most beautiful songs.
Beautiful ❤️
Fantastic!
this is seriously amazing.
This is beautiful.
Actually brought a tear to my eye, beautiful playing Rob
Man I needed this. Thank you Rob
Two 'thumbs up' 👍🏾👍🏼for you and Marshal Brune! Well done! I enjoyed the 'making of' vid... as well as this piece.
you made me tear up. gaved me some peace. i love ur music
Thank you for making a seperate video for this
This is amazing
Lovely.
This is so beautiful and it makes me shed some tears....🥺
Beautiful ..
I love that at the end of this, I could hear you say "yeah, that was it" and feel the same feeling of satisfaction that you felt after playing with such feeling.
I bet he hears the lyrics in his head ... WONDERFUL!!!!
I'm loving this new guitar
I will use this song to sleep and relax thx rob scallon so much!
Simply beautiful. Theres so much implied harmony and ghost notes that I'm not sure were even intentional... As it is the harmonic nature of a vibrating string. These sounds are really tickling my auditory sweet spot. Watching you and Marshall build this guitar together and wrapping it up with this piece really made me feel differently about my approach to playing the guitar. Thanks, Rob. You're an inspiration.
It sounds so simple (not that I can even think of even playing) yet so elegant
So beautiful. That 7 minutes brought me to so many places
Mutter goes hard. Love this recreation of it
I listened to this over breakfast this morning. It was lovely. Thanks for sharing your great musicianship with us, Rob! Cheers from WV.
Awesome piece!
The natural harmonic sound of this guitar is really good. Strumming a single chord really brings out the harmonics.
Lovely:) so nice to hear this side of you.
I like the choices you make
this is beautiful
