It's one of those cases where your phone is a jack of all trades, master of none. Sure, it can do GPS nav, but it won't be as good as a unit dedicated to that function. Average Joe probably won't need a GPS nav unit because a phone is fine, but there will always be dedicated navigators and niche cases where a GPS nav unit just makes sense.
I was stuck in Tennessee when great value uni-bommer went potato on the AT&T building. My phone was useless for days. I really wish I had a GPS on my Scout. Now, I have a GPS on every bike I own. It's not on most of the time, but I'm not taking that chance on a multi-day cruise.
I like your statement: "wait until you've experienced a situation in which a GPS could actually have made your life noticeably easier". I first bought a dedicated GPS for my motorcycle back in 2008 because smartphones weren't really a thing that most people had and i was living in a foreign country that I didn't know. As I've gotten older I have continued to upgrade and mount an on-board GPS because it means my phone can stay safely in my pocket; dry, charged, and ready for other situations. If you're taking your bike on a long-distance tour it's a great thing to have onboard, but if you're taking the same route every day, then you don't need to bother. It's certainly not the first thing you should get.
I use my running clothes for summer base layers. Any decent sporting goods store will have some on clearance. $5-25 bucks for name brand stuff from compression boxer briefs to shirts and tank tops. A good pair of lightweight merino wool running or hiking socks will also keep your feet nice and comfy. Not to mention, if you are a cardio junkie like me, it's all dual purpose.
Same here, I got my base layer from the soccer department. Long-sleeved breathable clothing. No clue why you'd want it for kicking a ball, but it sure is comfy on a bike. And cost me 30 bucks, in total. Oh, and I ALWAYS wear a long-sleeved base layer. A motorcycle jacked drenched in sweat once will smell forever, best to keep some fabric in-between.
Detailing products are quite different depending on products purchased. That said the HD swirl and scratch remover is absolutely amazing and the price is competitive. Not even a Harley guy, i own a triumph
Want some cold weather gear that surprisingly work really well. Loom up the militaries cold weather gear at any surplus shop. Sure a little pricey, but the shit works.
Can attest.....when I was in the CF, we had some great winter kit, especailly the parka's.....got a used one from a surplus store when I later became a M'C courier and wore it all winter, was warm and toasty even when the temps did well below freezing.......also picked up a pair of leather handle bar covers that my gloved hands fitted into and never had a problem with cold or my gloves getting soaked when it rained.
I drilled five half inch holes into the end plate of my Honda’s muffler. It saved me five hundred dollars on a Cobra exhaust, and sounds exactly the same… Love your videos , Yam! Have a VTX, still saving for an XSR900!
I have a metre long 10 mm steel rod and big hammer to punch holes through the internal baffles of any stock exhaust. First heat up the pie by riding then punch out the baffles. Remove rod by twisting with a multigrip plier. No need to drill holes in the external muffler and looks stock to Police except the gas flows better. Matched to a DNA or similar air filter and tune. Big improvement for low dollars!
Full system exhausts are great when your bike comes with a more simple "black painted" stock exhaust, because trust me, that thing is gonna become rusted looking prety quickily.
Sooo I will be in the market for a cup holder and modular helmet. I will pretentiously sip my latte at a traffic light with a pinkie extended. Love from Houston.
I purchased a Garmin XT GPS. Way better and bigger screen than phone. $ 500, but my top of the line Samsung phone cost over $1,000. Keep phone in jacket. If you get separated from your bike in a crash, your phone is on the bike and your are in a ditch ,[hopefully not dead] you can use your phone to call for help. Also a crash can destroy your phone, more likely when mounted on bike, than in your jacket. My GPS can withstand a strong rain. Many phones cannot unless in a waterproof case.
Nahhhh, 150$-200$ 2-3 generation behind Samsung phone for navigation/music. Data can come from my main phone's hotspot, located in the safety of my vest/fanny pack with a power bank ready for juice.
Talking about Harley branded things. The Harley engine shine spray is actually REALLY good if you like your plastics to be black and it also lasts for a long time even if it gets wet!
I agree with all of this, I don't throw the money in the trash. On the other hand, now the clothes I buy are all with laminated membranes. (except for pure summer) Is it a lot of money? Yes, but I'm more satisfied with the fact that I'm indifferent to whether it rains or not.
Woah Yammie. I have a built in cup holder for my BMW and have a thermo flask full of iced water. I use it at most traffic lights as it’s been 90+ degrees here. But it came with the bike so I make the use of it
I agree with 99% of what you said. I do think a large 7 inch CarPlay screen makes reading and following the maps easier, it is much brighter then my phone screen which is hard to see in the sun plus the sun overheats the phone and it goes off.
I use my cup holder for my travel coffee cup, and have a modular helmet for full chin bar safety, and red light caffeine intake options. Though my cup holder was like $35
onboard GPS systems are pretty useful for L & P platers in Australia as the law actually specifies you can't use a phone for such (at least in NSW) but then again police don't notice most times.
The halogen light on my Guzzi just isn’t enough for roads without street lights. I bought an LED, huge improvement. Yes even for the Guzzi, there were 800-900 options. A little shopping, found a great light for under $200. Even that is too much, but being able to see out on the country roads is worth it.
You definitely need a tune with a slip on. Bikes already run crazy lean from the factory, the slip on will flow that much better, making it that much leaner. Adjusting for fuel is necessary unless you want burnt & chipping exhaust vavles. Aka the gsxr pop
The one thing I will say is I ride dirt bikes and wear full knee braces. Having motocross socks that are essentially regular socks from the shin down and a more athletic style fabric from there up to the mid thigh is a life saver. I’ve tried non motocross branded stuff and never found anything near the quality.
Don’t but the Harley headlight custom dynamics has one that outshines (pun fully intended as I also bought that light) and outperforms it in the adaptive lighting portion as well. Definitely liked that on my Harley and stand by it as better especially compared to some peoples Harley light they had installed
If you're looking for why someone would add a Apple Carplay/Android Auto device to a bike, I can tell you why I did. I have a phone that nobody makes a motorcycle case that I can use. I have a folding phone and you can't find anything that really works with it on a bike that I trust. In order to put a nav/phone screen/music player on the bike, I didn't have a choice. I ended up with one that adds TPMS and front/rear cameras in case if an accident or someone messing with the bike. I can't speak for anyone else but I had what I consider "reasons".
I never wash my bikes with a soap and water. Degreaser for the wheels and quick detailer for everything else. If you do that often enough (and don't ride in the rain or off-road), you never need to touch hose or bucket.
I commute. I won't ride in the snow, but any plan that includes poly-coddling it more than that is out of the question. It will definitely see rain on the way home 2 to 5 times every year, rarely more.
about cleaning products, I would stuck with 2 "specific" products. the first one is chain cleaner. There is specifications about cleaning the chain and not damaging it, so it's more about "not changing" chain every monday. The second one is cleaning wipe. I got my hands on a good brand (80 wipes for 45€), and i use it to clean my entire bike and the solid parts of my helmet. I used 2-4 wipes for that (helmet, lights, licence plate, seat, commands, body, frame, fork, radiator, rims, underneath parts) It don't go as far as a good pressure wash (I still do it 2 times a year), but at least the cleaning fluids are not going on the brakes or the chain. I still got some brake cleaner for ... the brakes, but also for part my fingers can't get with my wipes

As someone who regularly wears hi viz stuff for work, I can say the standard hi viz work vest will NOT work for motorcycle wear. They are usually too loose fitting and have poor quality velcro straps to put them on with. I'm sure there are some with a similar design to the Icon vests, but the work vests usually don't have pockets where you can conveniently carry things like ID or first aid.
First, in general, many FARKLEs should be bought in the peddle bicycle section of a discount store or online supermarket. Most bicycles at 20-30 MPH take more shocks from small bumps, curb-ramps, and potholes with little or no suspension than a motorcycle at 30-50 on the same bad roads. If it can take the abuse of a bicycle, it will last on a motorcycle even better. Also, it's all priced for people who spend $100 to $900 on their total vehicle; so you can't charge double or triple for something you can make good money on for $20. Someone else will sell it for $20 and this market is not paying $60 to get your logo and advertise for you. 12:46 You ask what we think and which stuff we buy? I ride to work year-round and I know the moisture wicking underlayers in PA summers and Winter freeze-out layers in winter are worth EVERY penny! - Well considering I wait for Cycle Gear to have end of season sales for $10-$15 for one or two shirts and sometimes get a free matching set of gloves or balaclava for helping clean out their inventory; I also agree there's no reason to by one pair of shorts for $45. I also don't mind getting them at a superstore or discount market when available. While I'm wasting keystrokes few might ever read, Uline is usually a good seller, but that $9 bucket's a little steep, I got my 5 gallon bucket FREE at Harbor Freight for spending $15 for some non-related $25 item that was on sale, so it cost me about $9 less than at Uline. Cup-holder, OUCH, I like drinking my morning cup of joe on the way to work! My holder cost less than a third of the price you're price you're complaining about, you're right that's just silly. However, when you say "... no reason for ANY cupholder?" I must differ and won't beg for the right to do so.
Android Auto gives a much easier to use while moving interface than a phone on the bars. The split screen between maps and audio is really nice. You can do that on a phone but you have to fiddle to set it up every single time. Also for $105 on Ali I got a Carplay/Android Auto screen that also does front and rear 2K DVR video and BLE tire pressure monitoring.
Which one did you get and what size, 5 or 7 inch. I keep opting to wait as well because I can’t see them first hand to see how bright and readable or dim they are in the daylight sun.
@@pd8559 I got 5 inches. It's pretty close to my face where I have it mounted (above the dash behind the screen on my Tracer) so I don't need it to be big. I made paper mockups of the sizes to decide.
Here is a secret If you have a Harley Sportster or a Softail, keep the stock headers and only go slip ons with wrapped baffles and a db reducer. That is the best performing, best sounding and smoothest setup. The stock headers are much better than 90% of the aftermarket full systems.
I couldn’t agree more! All motorcycle stuff is over priced and I have always looked to see if non-motorcycle specific equivalent gear is available and if usually is. And guess what, I pay a fraction of the price for gear that does exactly the same thing. Spend money on a helmet, a jacket, pants, gloves, boots, the rest is easy. Don’t buy overpriced aluminium luggage set ups!
As in the boating world where slapping the title maritime grade on to a simple screw, you can double or triple the price, simply say Motorcycle XXXX and up goes the price......engine oil is a good example.
As a HD rider I have that bigazz cup holder since it came out at $35. I am a coffee drinker it paid for itself just on my midmorning stop on trips with hotel coffee alone. Recently retired but have a mount for it on my daily rider 1987 xl600r I've had since new. I also ride a lot after dark and stock HD headlights suck. Too cheap for a LP6 but for $200 it is the first thing to change. No other brand comes close to HD when it comes to farkles. Rallies are one big sales pitch, tents selling any and everything, it's a cosplay comedy show.
There's a German motorcycle cleaner called S100. Spray it, wait 15 minutes, run over it with a wet sponge, rinse, good to go. Dish soap will make your motorcycle clean and shiny. Until the anionic tensides start making the polycarbonate brittle and dull. If you like blind headlights, use dish soap.
Best list you've done in a while. I have a Ninja 650 (all stock), and find it ridiculous that other riders are spending $1000 on an exhaust and tune to get maybe 3 or 4 hp. Just WHY? Get a 636.
If you want a cheapish exhuast, run the 06-11 headers. They bolt right on and allow you to run a slip on. If you have a 2017+ you may need a little bracket of sorts to run some slip ons since the most recent ones are made for the 09-11 bikes. I spent $60 on a set of those headers on marketplace and another maybe $50 on an eBay slip on (will be changed to a roughly $215 slip on system).
I put a few carbon fiber pieces on my K1200s because they look better than the original. My wash bucket has wheels plus all the features of the Harley bucket with liquid car soap all sold by a company in Washington state. Why? Because I fucking like it Yammie!
Simple Green and a quick detailer from the Walmart auto section does it for me. Shines up as good or better than any of that expensive specialized shit.
I needed a full system exhaust when I found 1) The previous owner welded the muffler clamp to the header 2) nobody sells slip on exhausts to fit the stock header on 1990 ultra classics
Do not use regular dish soap on any clear coated vehicles. Dish soap is designed to break down grease. It will strip the clear coat off your paint. Use car or motorcycle wash. Preferably a car wash with some kind of wax mixed in. Car soap, water, a fresh rinse followed by paste wax is a great way to care for your bike.
Ah the Old Motorcycle Tax. I am sure the people who have bought the things on this list will pile in with self justification But you are spot on with all of them in my opinion, And I've just bought decals for the rims on my Tracer pointless and expensive... Makes it go faster though.
Bloody hell I've been jet washing my bikes at the local shell garage for years never had any problems I've found recently that household anti bacterial files are great for engine clean
A drink will not stay cold or cold in a cupholder I am thinking. On my offroad bike I will 50% freeze the hydration bag with water in it. Then the water stays "cold" all day in the hydration backpack. It is so refreshing to sip on. Living in the north I love my thin Venture+ heated vest that plugs into a battery connector. The heated collar is better than a great back rub and is on in about 3 seconds. Had it for 10 years and it replaces layers under a jacket on cold to very cold days /nights. But also means I do not have layers to stretch my leather jacket nor do I have layers to remove when I go indoors for a lunch while out riding. I have in decades never wanted cruise control to be added to a bike. That is for wooossies in my book. Never even on 18 hours long rides on highways. I want to control, ride and experience biking. Otherwise get a convertable car.
Yammie, you are spot on about the money 💸 wasted on so many unnecessary, overpriced items on the market that one can waste good, hard earned money on. I totally agree with you as it relates to GPS systems! Give me a break, I use my iPhone mounted on a “great quality” mounting system with the dampener and a plastic cellphone hood ($3.00) or shield and I am good to go! I especially like the cellphone hood (for 6 inch or larger phones) because it protects it from rain and glare, go and get one guys! The only accessories I buy are for my safety and my bikes protection just in case of a bad day. Also, I keep a bottle of waterless wash and wax in my saddlebag for quick cleanups on the fly, go and get some guys! Awesome video and advice Yammie! 😎👍✌️
LOL! I can confirm, soap or simple cleaner, sponge and nice good bucket of water is enough to clean a motorcycle. And frankly, a good sponge that allows you to reach some of the less easy to reach areas is absolutely the top of what you need for that. On the other hand: I've got an adventure bikt and taller windscreen makes a colossal difference during the trips and while moving above the city speed limit. Which, frankly, I find rather irritating as it seems to suggest to me that perhaps a sufficiently tall windscreen should be the default option IN THE FIRST PLACE, and not something you must buy on the aftermarket.
Use to take my old courier mounts to the local car self wash joint, hit them with a bit of high pressure water jet to knock of a weeks worth of crud, then soap and soak, quick scub with the bush followed by a rinse and we were good to go. Mind you, being courier bikes, they weren't ever going to win any beauty contest........
Hey bro, love your videos. Just wanted to say. I have a cup holder and use it for my coffee every morning. I also use it for water bottles. Keep the great vids coming
The whole under layer thing is wild to me because I didn’t know it existed until now lol The whole Harley thing is awful- way too expensive. I do have a couple accessories.. key chain, stickers for my bike, tail tidy, slip on! Like yeah I’ve totally looked at full exhausts butttt my bike has plenty of power as is and a extra few horse power isn’t worth the price of a well used Honda grom lol
The main reason for those Chinese screens is that they act as drive recorders - if you look at the kits they always come with two 1080p HD cameras to be mounted at the front and back of the bike, which is good protection if you even get into an accident and need to make an insurance claim and have video evidence. Them doing the GPS and Car Play thing is just a result of using Android as the platform to perform such duties so they might as well throw it in. The basic idea is far more useful than a dedicated SatNav device in comparison and I would consider getting one if they weren’t all made by Chinese companies that would probably disappear within two years. Wish an actual company would make them.
3:59 Don't use dish soap/washing up liquid to wash your bike. It contains a fair proportion of sodium chloride, (in other words, salt), which is used as a thickening agent - also great for promoting corrosion 😱
got my first harley. spent 12 years working as a mech/parts/sales in a multi line japanese bike dealership. I"m AMAZED but understand why harley's cost so much now...the mirrors have harley d cast into their stems. the headline, a sealed beam unit, has hd cast into into it's back side. REALLY? even the tires are harley branded on the sidewall. extra cost to make things this way and for WHAT? Why? In the off-shore bike world it's common to buy non-manufacturer branded parts and upgrades. My onboard GPS and my motorola phone combined cost less than any phone Rokform even makes a case for, much less one of those phones plus the phone mount setup. Granted, I've also put more miles on my GS in the last 9 months than most riders do in a decade.
I agree that motorcycle-specific t-shirts are bullshit. But you HAVE to try VNM Sport compression tops. IS the best $100 I have spent at the track. It will keep you feeling fresh on 105F track days even if you use a leather suit without ventilation.
I would argue that "motorcycle specific" cleaners make no sense whatsoever But having proper car cleaning products that are compatible with motorcycle components is a good investment IMO Soap and water + bucket is the way to scratch up any surfaces on ur bike
@@frozen_spiderMaybe he means because of the dirt that gets in the cloth when you clean it? In the end who cares really? It’s a tool, not a diamond ring, and clay bar it to get the grit off. It’s not that expensive to paint a tank.
@frozen_spider using a microfiber is the 1st step. By proper cleaning products i mean for example cleaners, shampoos etc. They loft off dirt and keep it in emulsion to reduce the chances of scratching. Dishsoap is great at dissolving grease and fat and keeps that in emulsion, but not actual particles Car/motorcycle cleaners also usually have lubricants to furthermore reduce scratching, by creating a thin slippery film without reducing cleaning power It's all in the details. I would wager, that a 100$/€ cleaning set may be much for a start, but you can use it for a long time and on all your vehicles. It will pay for itself after like 2-3 washes
I washed my car once with Dawn because we had no other soap to use at the time, I swear my car was more shiny and stayed cleaner looking for longer than I have seen with any car soap and wax.

It saved me five hundred dollars on a Cobra exhaust, and sounds exactly the same…
Love your videos , Yam!
Probably the most spot on video you've made in the 624 years you've been making videos.
I think a Yammie Noob patreon subscription is overpriced or unnecessary.
(except for pure summer)
Is it a lot of money?
I run like. $40 led headlight. It outperforms the 25 year old factory halogen sealed beam. So far it’s been good for going on 3 years. Looks good too
I'm cheap! I use my leaf blower to dry my bike!!!
My dad does the same with his Harley lol
Works great on my Triumph.
been doing the same thing for years
Never thought of that! Imma do that from now on
I take mine for a quick blat down the street to dry mine
The one thing I will say is I ride dirt bikes and wear full knee braces. Having motocross socks that are essentially regular socks from the shin down and a more athletic style fabric from there up to the mid thigh is a life saver. I’ve tried non motocross branded stuff and never found anything near the quality.
Don’t but the Harley headlight custom dynamics has one that outshines (pun fully intended as I also bought that light) and outperforms it in the adaptive lighting portion as well. Definitely liked that on my Harley and stand by it as better especially compared to some peoples Harley light they had installed
Honestly Harleys need the upgraded headlights. Factory ones are about as bright as the glow in the dark stars I used to have on my ceiling in the 90s
Harley Davidsons most often but baggers and their sound systems!
100% facts in this video.
Chigee by any chance?
I have one of them, good bit of kit, though a little on the expensive side.
I bought a puig touring screen and frame sliders for my 2022 MT09. That's all it needed.
I had a puig windshield.... But my frame/axle sliders definitely did their job
Ah, damn, I bought the $75 cupholder for my bike. Kept a liter tumbler in it that was refilled with water every stop on a 1600 mile trip in May.
It will definitely see rain on the way home 2 to 5 times every year, rarely more.
lololol the outros man I love them almost as much as Jake the garden snakes explosions.
about cleaning products, I would stuck with 2 "specific" products.
the first one is chain cleaner.
Yammie you're telling me I DONT need a $4000 handmade titanium full exhaust shipped from Japan?
Fuck you I'm buying it anyway. (This is mostly a joke, but I definitely am still buying it anyway)
no. yam is saying HE doesn’t need a $4000 handmade titanium full exhaust from japan.
you certainly DO need such a thing. i am here to support your decision. 💪🏼✅😅
I've said it before but man I do love your outros
Whoever named it a “Hog Blaster” knew exactly what they were doing 😂
I brought a 150 USD Headlight Projector LED Conversion Kit. Worth every buck! Enhanced and improved night vision
The full system titanium exhaust on my MT-07 makes it sound like the bastard lovechild of a Harley and an R1. It's absolutely essential. 🤣
A radial front master cylinder, on the other hand, is well worth the cash.
You should check out the 600$ Bluetooth speaker for the BMW R18
I needed a full system exhaust when I found
1) The previous owner welded the muffler clamp to the header
2) nobody sells slip on exhausts to fit the stock header on 1990 ultra classics
Love those endings xD first time I witnessed the end of the video I was just about to fall asleep. Needless to say I Woke up xD
Did this guy just say he was going to Russell some feathers? Lol
Did he rustle ur feathers?
@@jessesdomain444 should be ruffle, no?
I love my $70 cupholder to carry my coffee to work!
I can only imagine some of the accessories that Harley will have in their Leather Shop going forward 😂
Bastard, I feel asleep watching your video and then you're "Wake up" chants in your outro really woke me up. And I was having a good dream. too.
That reminds me. Mt Dew Code Red is delicious.
I use my Edge 530 bicycle GPS on my Honda NC750X DCT loaded with free Open Street Maps.
I live in a country that is made up of 90% forest and a gps is super nice to have when going on long tours.
“Slugging down kidney stone fuel” 😂
Ok the daymaker headlight is legit good upgrade but their price is like 4x what it should be.
Don't forget the stage 43 kit that you must have to ride 5 miles to the coffee shop or bar.
Bloody hell I've been jet washing my bikes at the local shell garage for years never had any problems I've found recently that household anti bacterial files are great for engine clean
hr should make a hidden lore with his outros
Cupholder gang here, love it.
Let's say you're riding to work and want to grab a coffee at timmies (yes, I'm Canadian). Where do you put it?
I cannot believe you can buy a cup holder for a motorbike that's hilarious 😂😂😂😂
The absolute best accessory is some training for the lump of meat on top of the bike
Off-road aftermarket GPS makes sense. Regular ones do not. Also bigger screen GPS makes sense for older people whose vision isn’t that great
What about those ridiculous $480 sport bike mirrors?
lolol Sudden Yamnesia
hehe titanium exhaust go BRAAAAAP
Hey bro, love your videos. Just wanted to say. I have a cup holder and use it for my coffee every morning. I also use it for water bottles. Keep the great vids coming
how much it costs?
@@nicolask9295 I got the RAM MOUNT cup holder. I think it was around $40
I have the RAM MOUNT cup holder. About $40
Bought dresser bars $250, U-turn on gravel... dresser bars already paid for themselves.
Harley bucket had me in stitches xD
Yeah, me too!...my Harley bucket came free from Harbor freight.😆👍
@@ftby59mikeD You better take good care of that, you hear me! It costs almost as much as tires for my bike :D
Hell, I’m just trying to keep my 02 Ducati monster running. Forget upgrades.
I buy good tires first then suspension then exhaust engine upgrades
daamn, a photo for the gps part of the video with a trail near Miercurea Ciuc from Romania 🇷🇴
The whole under layer thing is wild to me because I didn’t know it existed until now lol
The whole Harley thing is awful- way too expensive.
I do have a couple accessories.. key chain, stickers for my bike, tail tidy, slip on! Like yeah I’ve totally looked at full exhausts butttt my bike has plenty of power as is and a extra few horse power isn’t worth the price of a well used Honda grom lol
Definitely the getting that cup holder 👉🍻
Carbon fiber wrap is the only carbon fiber I’ll ever have. Other than the akrapovic exhaust I have lol
To be fair, HD standard headlights are like candles
How about a Ninga knife set It slices, it dices and it purees.
😅😅
got my first harley. spent 12 years working as a mech/parts/sales in a multi line japanese bike dealership.
I washed my bike with the same car wash/foam canon I use on my car...came out looking spectacular, first was in 4 years. Though S100 is great stuff!!
When I had my yam venture i put a cup holder on it - one from a boat store, or maybe kmart (it was a while ago). it swiveled and worked great. $5 maybe.
$10 is almost too much for a cupholder.
But a cupholder is a necessity for my commute.
Drive through people always look at you funny on a bike.
I would argue that "motorcycle specific" cleaners make no sense whatsoever
But having proper car cleaning products that are compatible with motorcycle components is a good investment IMO
Soap and water + bucket is the way to scratch up any surfaces on ur bike
How would I scratch any surface with a microfibre cloth?
@@frozen_spiderMaybe he means because of the dirt that gets in the cloth when you clean it?
In the end who cares really? It’s a tool, not a diamond ring, and clay bar it to get the grit off.
It’s not that expensive to paint a tank.
@frozen_spider using a microfiber is the 1st step. By proper cleaning products i mean for example cleaners, shampoos etc. They loft off dirt and keep it in emulsion to reduce the chances of scratching. Dishsoap is great at dissolving grease and fat and keeps that in emulsion, but not actual particles
Car/motorcycle cleaners also usually have lubricants to furthermore reduce scratching, by creating a thin slippery film without reducing cleaning power
It's all in the details.
