Gender and the Zodiac

- You might know that some zodiac signs are "male" and other's "female" but you might not realize that it doesnt conform to the gender-binary paradigm! ~~~~ vicdicara.com ~~~~
In the previous episode we discussed why the Sun and Moon take possession of the 5th and 4th divisions, Leo and Cancer. And since the Sun is and Moon are archetypically male and female, it's easy to digest the idea that two divisions are, respectively, male and female. And it is simple enough to just repeat this pattern around the whole zodiac wheel, and get an accurate description of which signs are male and which are female.
But this is not the actual reason why the signs are male and female!
Here is the true reason:
The basic masculinity or femininity of a zodiac sign is a side effect of which of the four elements constitutes them.
Fire is a very masculine element
Water, very feminine.
Air is somewhat masculine
Earth is somewhat feminine.
The three modes have an inherent subtle gender dynamic:
Cardinal is impatient and bold,
a masculine quality
Fixed is patient and enduring
a feminine quality
Dual tries to balance the above qualitys
and so has a neutral nature.
The gender of a signs ruler certainly affects the gender dynamic of the sign.
♀ and ☽ are very feminine.
This augments the femininity of ♋︎ & ♉︎ but offsets the masculinity of ♎︎.
♂ and ☉ are very masculine.
This augments the masculinity of ♈︎ & ♌︎ but offsets the femininity of ♏︎
♃ is also masculine.
This augments the gender of ♐︎ while offsetting ♓︎
☿ and ♄ are gender-fluid or gender-irrelevant
so let's say they don't affect their sign's basic gender
If we use numbers to describe all this
we can get a more precise image
We will use a scale of 0 ~ 2
0 means neutral
1 mild
2 extreme
Values above 0 will represent masculinity
Values below will represent femininity
+2 for fire
-2 for water
+/- 1 for air & earth
+1 to cardinal
-1 to fixed
0 to dual signs
signs of ♂ and ☉ get +2
signs of ♀ and ☽ get -2
♃'s signs get +1
♄ and ☿'s get 0
The sums for each sign describe its actual place on the gender spectrum. W
♈︎ is 100% masculine
♉︎ 80% feminine
A bit closer to the center but still quite clearly on one side or the other are ♌︎, ♋︎ and ♐︎; 60% into their side of the spectrum
Only 20% away from neutrality: ☿'s ♊︎ & ♍︎, along with ♏︎ and ♓︎
Leaving us finally with the absolutely neutral most gender-irrelevant signs of all ♄'s ♑︎ & ♒︎
Misconception 1
"Besides ♈︎ ♉︎ ♋︎ ♌︎ & ♐︎
the rest of the signs are pretty boring
when it comes to gender."
In fact, being near the center of the gender spectrum is absolutely not synonymous with being "gender boring" or "unsexed." These signs can be extremely interesting in sexual and other gender-relevant ways because they are full of surprises and have a-sterotypical uniqueness.
Misconception 2
"♏︎ and ♍︎ have the same score,
so I guess they actually have the same gender dynamic?"
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The difference is in way the signs arrive at their score. ♏︎ arrived at its mild score by extremes on both sides of the spectrum cancelling each other out.
We can add another layer of clarity by scoping the gender of the sign in context of the age of its ruling planet.
First lets consider the most clear-cut signs, ♈︎ and ♉︎, and describe how they differ from the next most clear-cut signs, ♌︎ and ♋︎ .The difference is that the rulers of ♈︎ and ♉︎ are newly adults while the rulers of ♌︎ and ♋︎ are experienced adults
So ♈︎ ♉︎ are quite excitable, and often go overboard in things related to gender (esp ♈︎). While ♌︎ ♋︎ are more interested in achieving stability and reliability in how they use and pursue gender-things.
Next let's look at the most gender-neutral signs ☿'s ♊︎ & ♍︎ and ♄'s ♑︎ & ♒︎.
♊︎ hasn't fully entered manhood
it doesn't take anything particularly seriously, doesn't make or take many threats or risks, and hasn't committed to pursuing any particular ambition.
♍︎ hasn't fully entered womanhood
it is thinking a lot about its future responsibilities and trying to prepare as well as possible.
♒︎ is slightly male with slightly female affect ("presentation"). Typically the feminine ability to sacrifice self for the sake of a group or partnership .
♑︎ is converse, slightly female with slightly male affect. Typically the masculine ability to be assertive, commanding, and definite.
♎︎ is fundamentally masculine but presents via feminine assets. Typically in the feminine ability to be artistic and expressive.
♏︎ is fundamentally feminine but presents via masculine assets; typically in the masculine ability to be independent and powerful.
Closing
Beauty is balance and fine detail
expressed in a clear, simple format
It is hard to imagine a description of the male female gender dynamic
that is more balanced and nuanced,
in such a delightfully deceptive
seemingly simple format.

I always felt this, and I can't believe someone saying it the way is see it... I'm transgender /gender nonconforming and my ascendant is in Libra. I literally feel like you described Libra. And my other friends who are Scorpios or Geminis or Leo's etc etc you literally described them... I guess we're in tune with our inner feelings

I'm a practicing apprentice astrologer of about two years having arrived at astrology through other personality systems which hold extroversion/introversion as a trait metric. No one else I've studied has explained WHY certain gender was assigned to the elements when there seems to be exceptions like Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Aquarius, although it was very subtly obvious. I abandoned those loaded terms in favor of extroversion (air and fire) and introversion (earth and water), but under the condition that I'd eventually learn more about the reason behind all the gender talk... so here it is! I ordered your book on the philosophy of astrology and look forward to reading it as that is my primary area of interest which for most astrologers is mistakenly taken for granted. Cheers!

But I would love another book that uses the above analytical approach with visual diagrams, for all the things you cover. I'd love to learn in the same visual manner.....how signs in different houses alter the masculine and feminine natures as well. Visual charts/descriptions/algorithms, describing exaltation and debilitation of traits, for signs in houses, and planets in signs. Do you have such a book??
Im working on an app right now, that is combing astrology with the kabbalistic tree of life, and I need to understand how houses, and exaltation/debilitation are working in a more mathematical way.... (as shown in this video). I understand how it works on an intuitive level for sure.....but for my software....I need a similar mathematical breakdown so I can code it.
This way of calculating the "true" gender of a sign, has already helped me immensely in my app. Thanks!

THIS! 👏🏼 Why don’t other astrologers talk about this? I have always seen each sign with its own unique balance of feminine and masculine. Until I saw this video I thought that was only my personal ideas. I have heard of planets being talked about as having feminine, masculine, and androgynous characteristics, but never the signs especially in this way. Thank you for sharing this knowledge with us! Also could be likened to the commonly used *blood types.* Interesting perspective, though I love math the numbers throw me a little but if it works for you👍🏽. Visually observed naturally is relevant as well as the "male" & "female" foundation blended with planet, element and modality and placement/age.
Example..Aries Mars = beginning = our birth as a baby = seperated sentient bodies which is masculine which is leaving feminine(womb of mother of Pisces) to be in another feminine(womb of mother nature of Taurus).
Scorpio Mars is going within, hidden or down under ..so the feminine quality of leaving the 'of age' bodies that connected in a masculine sense in Libra. What leaves our bodies? Woman's cycle, conception, semen, bowel and urine. Also life leaving the body so death. Awareness leaves the bodies so passion. Emotions leaving the body etc. Going to the masculine of exploration of dharma?
By using words like push and pull, leave and go into, led and supported.. I'm sure creates a beautiful story. The child bearing mother is told to push while the child may feel pulled into the next chapter in life. Or how the support of the Leo with inspiring legacy and self creation is great for the calculating and perfecting competition in virgo that's led with the standards and compromises in Libra.

Fascinating thesis and great explanation! You drew an interesting parallel between the Zodiac and the spectrum of gender. I find the video's content to be interesting, although difficult to concentrate on the changing context in this video format. I was wondering if you possibly throw up some text with name of the sign being mentioned? This would help me better understand what you're presenting by reclaiming my attention.
E.g., 19:27 - "♒Saturn's Aquarius"
I would kind of think of fixed signs as being at least both male and female considering the strong willed, stubborn and even rebellious in doing things their own way. They are patient and enduring like you said but I wouldn't quite say that fixed just means feminine. Anyway, I do love your channel.

Vic, there is a singer that has all his planets in feminine signs and is known for soprano voice, is Dimash Kudeibergen 5/24/1994 at 7:30pm in Aktoba...he has a very interesting chart. Born in lunar eclipse, 3 planets in ascendant Scorpio...and is titled the best singer in the world.

So as per that, scorpio=libra. Which means, if a man's venus is in libra, a scorpio would also do... Just in case.
For some crazy reason, the gender of the planets would just make more sense if jupiter was feminine. It looses symetry somewhere for it to be masculine.
i think then there would be too many females.
I think we would have symmetry if jupiter were in the middle of the two genders with mercury and saturn.
And honestly, that is prettttttty close to what it is. Its just that Jupiter has the male quality of being bossy, telling people whats what.
The symmetry shows when you include the 2 nodes.
Females: Venus (young), Moon (mature), Rahu (atypical)
Males: Mars (young), Sun (mature), Jupiter (atypical)
Trans: Mercury (young), Saturn (old), Ketu (atypical)
So I'm pretty new to Astrology and I'm mostly here for personality traits and making some sort of sense of what we do and why do we do it. Don't really understand spirituality so these things are kinda hard to understand. So my question is what do you mean by masculine and feminine zodiac signs ? I'm a Taurus Sun, Aquarius moon and Leo Rising male and I have a pretty masculine personality or so people say. So how does the masculinity or femininity of the zodiac signs correlates with the person?
if you are clear on what masculine and feminine means, you can proceed. but not many people are. basically masculine goes out, feminine goes in - and that explains 90% of everything more complex about the two.
M/Fm in astrology will be used in many ways. We use it to see how comfy or uncomfy a planet is in a sign, for example. A simple way you can use it is to see if your male planets are in male signs, and visa versa. The more they are, the more gender-clear or gender-simple you are.
Do you mean male and female, or did you mean masculine and feminine? There's so much confusion between sex and gender these days.
