Never Gonna Gifugue Up 🕺🎤 - A 4 voice fugue, but you got rickrolled

Following the fun of "Barbie Girl in the Style of 6 Classical Composers" last summer, the series of fugues based on annoying tunes was due for a sequel.
This time, the contrapuntal throwback takes us to the '80s with Rick Astley’s hit “Never Gonna Give You Up”-famous in its day and even more popular thanks to Internet meme culture and the "rick-rolling" frenzy of the early 2000s.
I've developed the irritatingly infectious short initial motive of the tune into a 4 voice fugue, showcasing the structure with motion graphics and light-hearted commentary. As for the animations, I have also been experimenting with new callout box styles with running parts of the score-I hope they enhance the visualisation of the music!
Also, make sure to check out the behind-the-scenes video that Robin and Isak created for this production to get a glimpse of the creative process we went through: • Never gonna give you u... . Robin and Isak are currently working on a documentary about my life as a musician, which is part of a captivating series featuring some truly fascinating individuals as well as me. Stay tuned for the full documentary-it’s almost here!
Enjoy the video. 😊
My friends at @storybydanehav, who helped film this video, have created a documentary about me: ruclips.net/video/TFJ3mgx0xy0/видео.htmlsi=9yRAiW4GWxZHx8Tv. It is part of a series of documentaries about 100 different individuals and revolves around the creation of this very video, my job at the Stockholm Philharmonic, the quest for excellence...and the need to let go. Make sure to watch it! 🎻 /Josep CA
Imagine not only get rickrolled, but 4 times at once.
Not only 4 times at once, but also in a very decorated and sophisticated way.
Not only in a classy way, but also musically explained so we get to understand the whole process of how did we get fugue-rickrolled.
My new go-to rickroll video.
I'm not going to post this on the main comment because I don't want to hurt the composer's feelings. I really enjoyed the Barbie Girl Fugue because it was just well-done, but also it very much highlighted the motif. So, it was sort of like Fugue re-make of a song. // This piece was also well-done, but my issue is that it only uses the beginning motif but never carries the whole phrase (which ends in the line "never gonna tell a like and hurt you."). So, what happens is that the Never Gonna Give You Up Gigue does't really sound or "feel" like the original tune or idea. Listening to this is more like listening to an entirely different, independent composition.
It's still amazing stuff, though, and I subscribed!
(PS, come check out my color-music theory here at: _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
As Buxtehude said to Bach: "i'm glad the old Art hasn't died and lives on in you" great work !!
And also to Paul Simon, I've heard.
I remember that it was Reincken, not Buxtehude...
@@riccardocollu8610 It was.
Thank you! @@riccardocollu8610
When I die, I’ll leave my Buxtehude.
Wow. Absolutely brilliant! Anyone who has ever attempted to play a Bach fugue would recognise your absolute talent.
The musical genius in composing this piece plus the phenomenal video editing/effects is just an incredible combination of high level skills. Hats off!
Damn, came for the music, stayed for the production quality and animations. Also really good job demonstrating & explaining all these music theory concepts over the course of the piece. What a piece of art :D
Thank you very much, it definitely took some hours of editing… 😅/Josep CA
@@JosepCastanyerAlonso It shows!
@@JosepCastanyerAlonso I'm shocked. Bravo!!! Bravisimo!!!
Amen!
I was crying with the sheer beauty and genius of it all.
I imagine Bach would be applauding loudly! 🎉
Ive never been so happy to be rickrolled
Or, as JSB said "Rickgeröllet.:😂
Me too!! This is actually beautiful
Yeah. It’s a while that I didn’t have been too. Especially in 2024.
...Even if you can be rickrolled absolutely anytime of the History.
Excellent work, Josep - thank you very much indeed. It goes without saying that the musical work is first class, but you're setting a new standard in piano video here, and the rest of us will be racing to catch up. Keep it up, please!
Thank you Bill! ❤/Josep CA
The sheer amount of talent you have is ASTRONOMICAL. I always look up to you when trying to compose. Sin palabras! (Y la edición del video increíble!)
Your videos are high quality, creative, high iq and funny altogether. Just, thank you, classical music needs people like you🙏
Just top notch everything. The actual music is insanely high quality on its own, let alone the amazing editing style.
One of the best visualizations of a composition I've ever seen! I'm really digging the scrolling score parts and the little animations. This is so compositionally pristine - I especially liked 1:06 - 1:10 and 1:34 - 1:45 :D
Thank you for the truly excellent work!!
This is insane!! Beautiful composition and what an elegant performance. Really love that mini-interlude at 0:36 and that sequence moment at 1:36 😍
Truly a genius pianist 👏🎹
Thank you very much! ❤ /Josep CA
The best rickroll of my life
This is insanely good. A masterpiece, and piano is not even his main instrument ...
Theres lots of this kind of content on youtube, but you definitely do it the best
Please, please, let us know how we can support you in a way that can keep these videos coming. You're seriously one of the most talented people on RUclips, you absolutely nail the fugue and the style of Bach.
Please, allow people to support you, to buy things you create. I would be first in line.
Absolutely fantastic.
Just awesome! Wonderful composition, rendition, and video edit - true mastery! 👏✨🎹
This is just incredible! A true masterpiece! I think, Bach would be very proud of you.
Love your work! Staying tuned!
This video is perfect in everything. Well done.
This makes me unnaturally happy. Thank you! Fugue on!!
Your commentary is as entertaining as your musicianship is brilliant. Superb!
Very nice craftmanship. Congratz!
Such a good pianist but hes a professional cellist and obviously a well trained composer! So much with this fascinating guy. Hope he gives us some of his compositions!
Great visuals! Incredibly well crafted piece from a tune that is deeply rooted in pop culture!
It really is a joy to listen to your pieces. only the irrepressible desire for more remains...
The only content creator who makes me drop everything as soon as a new video with a new track comes out!
This was awesome, I love how much complexity a simple figure can achieve.
I'm curious about how would you compose an orchestral version, without the limitations of the piano.
Brilliant as always - the playing, the video creation, the music theory notes, and YOU!! 👍
A thousand times more pleasant than the original one 😂 Great job!
The list of history's great fugists has a new entry on it!
"Nice hall, huh?" * rewinds video *
WOW! This is the 3rd video of Josep's that I have watched and they keep getting more interesting and more educational. AMAZING.
This is outstanding. The work, the performance, the videography, and the commentary. Pure brilliance! ❤
That last bass subject entry👌🏻👌🏻
this is unironically a beautiful fugue. thanks!
I heard a mental applause at the end of this
Wow! You can rickroll me like that as much as you want! Incredible work and video editing.
Absolutely brilliant!! Thank you so much for sharing this-I’ve shared this link with many friends.
Thank you Excellent video, love your Fugue, your playing, and your brilliant editing. 🇨🇦
And he plays the cello even better !
I love how you mixed together the C# Major Fugue from Bach's WTC BWV: 848 (Book 1), and Rich Rolls theme. Its a great insight that you noticed the similarity between the two themes and married them exquisitely. Keep doing what you are doing to make Fugue's popular again, Bach tried and failed, then Beethoven, Mahler, Rachmaninov (though not really) and then Glenn Gould, well maybe J.C. Alonso can! I have my fugues waiting in the wing to join you;)
Haha, yes, that one is one of my favourite fugues ever! ❤/Josep CA
@@JosepCastanyerAlonso its an incredibly logical fugue. I love how Bach exhausts almost all permutations of each motif. Both the theme and counter-theme, but always with respect to the foundational idea.
As for the WTC, I love all of them, but one of my top favorites in the C major fugue, it is such an incredibly difficult fugue to write, its so dense with stretto. Pure genius.
Have you explored the Golberg Variations? As in there lies my favorite contrapuntal work of Bach. Var 4 and 10 (the fughetta). Magnificent!!
The Beatles Penny Lane barrowed their baseline from this work (probably variation 4). Consider covering it. You're welcome😉. Parita in Dm (BWV 1004), and his passacaglia in Cm BWV 582 (for organ) are my favorite Bach works -- unmatched in their glory and majesty.
One more question, you are very proficient at keyboard, why did you choose the cello as your primary instrument? I am not accomplished as a pianist, but proficient, I love playing it (I play guitar and drums as well, but am mostly into composition) however, I've longed to learn the cello because of its rich sonorous tones! Have you found any works for cello than Bach's cello suite'? Do any even exist?
WOW. can you release an album of your baroque interpretations of pop music? I would seriously love that
Send this to Rick Astley
Such a great composition!
best fugue ive ever heard in my life...
This is beautiful. I love the animations also!
Congratulations, Josep! Beautiful music and production. God bless you!
ive carefully looked at, or maybe more listened to, this guys videos and im pretty sure he's good at the piano and the music composition. ill keep watching his videos to verify my theories and keep the rest of you updated on my findings, but right now im leaning heavily towards this guy being pretty damn good.
Wonderful. I really enjoy your fugues. I would absolutely love to hear 'original' fugues created by you. Please choose your themes and compose 24 beautiful fugues. You are truly a master. #legend
This was awesome!! Love the commentary, really helped me understand the form. Sending this to every music theory teacher I know (which is 3 :D)
Chapeau! Authentical Baroque style! Very few can pull that off!
This is the first time I've been not rickrolled but amazed❤
GET RICKROLLED! AHHAHA GOCHA
You are incredibly talented - and I am not one to be easily impressed. I hope you make more videos.
When I went to high school my formal music education ended, not my choice. As I get older I am so frustrated because music affects me at a visceral level and I wish I knew the reasons. Thank you for this.
👏Absolutely stunning! 👍👍 Josep... you're a genius with a great sense of professional humor! Thanks for this demonstration❗ 😀
Please, continue. Your work is great!
Great writing! Loved it. Bach would be proud.
This was incredibly helpful, as someone beginning to listen to and appreciate Bach’s music more, this helped me further understand it. Thank you.
This kind of playful brilliance gets an instant subscribe, like, and I tell all my friends.
What you're doing here, i's essential to this world. Thank you so much
Do a classical version of another famous hits of Rick and Body and Soul, Sleeping Away and You moved me ❤❤❤❤❤.
Thanks for mixing ode to Rick Astley mixing a dance disco global hit with classical arregements and classcal interpretations, kudos ❤
Wow wow wow wow wow
Everything is just perfection here, excellent work and a beautiful original piece.
I hope Rick gets to see this. Will put a smile on his face.
Keep it going!
So many things was going on... Did we have stretto?..
The sheer reassurance this sensationally intelligent music provides is immense.
Is Rick Astley aware of the existence of this marvel? I am sure that he would be very pleased and amused.
Simply outstanding! Gràcies! ❤️
Oh, thank you very much! ❤/Josep CA
A delight for the ears! Thank you!
Marvelous work, as always!
A man is clearly having fun. mozart would thumbs up
You are so talented
There’s only one thing missing: a cheering audience!
The video editing >>>>
Wow! Please keep doing this.
I've already praised your work but I'm not shy to do it again! I'm profoundly sad that the physical condition of my beloved idol/master Keith Jarrett prevents him to produce more masterpieces nowadays but I'm also so glad there are a few extremely talented fellows like you to disrupt musical frontiers and dazzle us with such beauties! THANK YOU.
How lovable can human beings be?
I think you are truly brilliant and I love your videos. 😁👍
Hail, Maestro!
Oh, my GOD, we've gone from the "I'm a Barbie Girl" Fugue, to "Never Gonna Gigue You Up!" // Subscribed.
(Josep and all fans, come and see my color-shape associations with the notes. I think it's very important, on a psychological level.)
- _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_
Finally, in a real concert hall. Congrats!
You're really teaching me about classical music! Thanks!
I am very glad to hear that, thank you! 😊/Josep CA
I love your videos !!!
This is amazing!
… and thanks for making the sheet music available as well! First link under the video, just saw that. I will buy this one and the Barbie Fugue, for which I had a black market copy that I will now burn in penitence. 😂 Bravo Josep !!!!
I didn’t know those arrangements circulate in the black market, that surprises me! Where did you find it? Anyway, I’ll take it as a compliment! 😂/Josep CA
You see - even the informal sector of the economy is taking notice of your extraordinary music 😂 There are these youtube piano teach-in videos, where the notes roll down from the top. Some show the score scrolling forward at the bottom. A dubious friend of mine 😮 took twenty-odd screenshots and pasted them together, line by line.
I was planning to read Albert Schweitzer‘s Bach today - but turns out, spent half the day on this score… Never Gonna Gifugue Again… I am actually discovering its beauty and details in action. Those dissonant inversions, bars 60 and following - seem to say „let me out again“ - until they find the b minor door, eventually 😂. So many episodes in a beautiful fugue. I hope there will be more of this!
i like the funky dissonances best
Bach didn’t… 😅/Josep CA
jaw....dropped...
holy shit this is genius
BRAVO!!!!!🎉 *virtual standing ovation*
Great video you're very talented, thank you for sharing
Peter Schickele (PDQ Bach) died a few days ago. He would have been delighted to hear this!
Great work! What software did you use for the editing?
Brilliant! Simply brilliant. Old JSB would be smiling.
Please do hello by Lionel Ritchie but in Vivaldi style😅. You good man!!
roses are red
cellos are brown
never gonna give you up
never gonna let you down
Finally, a new way to rickroll folks.
This was awesome. I hope to hear more from you.
Thank you, i will be rockrolling my friends with this video from now on!
Greetings from occupied Poland.
God tier rickroll
Definition of quality over quantity. Amazing as always!
And he knows it by heart!!!
classiest rickroll ever 👌
