VMware vSAN 8 ESA Update 2 is out now, meaning it's about time vSAN customers jump on the architecture change and enjoy the simplicity vSAN offers. We paired up 4x Dell PowerEdge R6625 servers with 32x WD SN655 SSDs to get a feel for how it all comes together. vSAN 8 ESA is more simple than ever to configure and the 15.36TB WD SSDs enable tremendous density in 4U, while delivering an excellent performance profile that's also cost-effective.

I wish dell never sold VMware to Broadcom.

A lot of people echo that opinion at this point.

I've never seen the inside of Round Rock, finally nice to get a inside look. It's like a homelab away from home. It's definitely a relief watching this instead of some log bundle all day.

Heh. Dell let us get real in their lab. We appreciate it.

Was the testing done with RDMA enabled?

RDMA is still optional and the entire environment needs to support it for everything to play nice. We didn't use it.

So RAID1 still wins out in 70/30 IOPS (4k) workload which makes sense due to the architecture. But really do not like the 'low' 4k random iop figures. ~300-500k with that many drives is not that high but vsan is not really for top performance but 'good enough' for business applications. Can see some value if you're not a hardware nerd and actually are running something for production use (i.e. click button/call vendor support) but for lab or home build use where you can afford to get more into the weeds building your own seems better.

There will always be a balance of a solution that has a balance of performance/overhead and one that can get peak performance.

I think anything you build your self will destroy enterprise stuff value wise.

@@thatLion01 No idea what you're talking about here, there are hundreds of thousands of vSphere nodes out there that someone has to assemble. They're not born assembled, lol.

Is ESA using TCP or RDMA by default when using 100GE?

Just to save anybody else from wasting their time you have to fast-forward to the end of the video to see the results. Normally, I wouldn’t have mentioned that however they make a strong statement right at the start of the video that they’re going to give you the results at the beginning and then show you how they did it later in the video, which was a complete lie. Obviously they didn’t try and keep you tuned in as the minutes roll past and you are just waiting for those results as they extend their sales pitch trying to get you to intellectually invest into the product they said absolutely nothing revolutionary during this video, they showed a complete disregard for the time and energy of the audience they attracted with their click bait. I definitely won’t be following this channel.
