In this week's episode, the trio is joined by Bernie Gross, creative director at New York sneaker boutique Extra Butter. Gross recalls his journey in the footwear industry, from buying SBs at stores like Special Sauce in Long Island to helping longstanding LI sneaker shop Renarts establish itself anew with Extra Butter. He breaks down what running a sneaker store really takes-from handling chaotic releases to managing relationships with brand partners and collaborators. Also, the co-hosts discuss the merits of beat sneakers: When is it time to throw your old shoes out? How much wear is too much wear? Can a pair of Air Force 1s that spent a year in the Armenian mountains go any further?

Growing up in Oakdale, newskool was the first shop I was old enough to go to for all my skate gear. Special sauce was where I first saw lobsters 🦞 my spot for snowboards and everything in between. Now it’s Bungar, the best shop for everything though was special sauce

I find that when the shoe has good materials, they look better longer. Like just being worn a lot doesn’t get them to the beat status, compared to a cheap material shoe where just the bending of the materials makes the shoe look bad.

I feel like a lot of the young guys my age lack the passion and knowledge and it is a generalization but it feels like it’s all about reselling and what’s hype, it just sucks and is corny to me.
