Well, Dan the gardener. This is what you were doing for Stephanie when I first started watching Chateau Diaries. Glad to hear you got advice from Davey.
Davey is a Belgian garden designer whom Dan met at Chateau Lelande and who is working with Stephanie ( the chatelaine ) on her garden redesign. He is currently at Lelande and can be seen on the daily Chateau Diaries vlog.
@@majorrgeekI've already established that you're telling lies about that, and every time I see you make a comment to that effect, I'll be advising the viewers about it.
The plantings are food for the soul. Dan will be living in the yurt for a few years and the man needs the balance between the stone of the chateau, the living garden, future water feature, and the cozy fire of the yurt. Dan, enjoy.
Yes Dan is wise to do the landscaping in tandem with the restoration of the Chateau. Dan is a creative and I agree it will nourish his soul. The world famous garden, Sissinghurst, was also created at the same time that the castle and its out buildings were restored as a home for the family back in 1930 - by a gardener, poet and writer.
What a great effort Dan and what a magnificent change to the Chateau. Good to have people like Nic and Cameron helping you too. You are so right in saying it gives the Chateau a new life and while you won’t see the growth over the next year or two when you look back you will realise what a difference it is to forward plan. Well done my friend and keep safe.
@robertmdaniels yes but not one of them is qualified to make structural repairs to this dilapidated building - I have asked them to show some evidence of planning approval and I have come under attack - that says it all
Yay Dan the Gardener! You've chosen so smartly plus they're my personal favourite plant varieties for a big garden like this. I used to have so many of these when I had a big garden! Can't wait to see what varieties of rhododendron you chose. They're an amazing plant that lasts for literally generations. Are you planting any hydrangeas? I hope so. A big planting of pure white and deep indigo hydrangeas will look after itself in an acid soil like yours and apart from their wow factor when they're blooming, they're great for cut flowers in giant vases in big rooms! Also, you can prune them back to a quivering stump and they'll go 'pffft!' at you and grow back bigger and stronger than ever! I love absolutely everything about Chateau de Chaumont. Oh, and Nick and Cameron, you are amazing. Just sayin'.
And Hydrangeas take so readily from cuttings harvested from prunings. I often take a quick look after pruning sessions of any plant/s to see if there's potential cuttings material; can't bear to look a freebie triffid in the proverbial horse's mouth...😜🤪😂
Amazing!!! all very exciting. I had the sense again that the chateau would be settling even more as the trees and shrubs are planted around it. Gosh you have done a great deal - you're moving mountains!!!
When I did my garden I didn't have that much money so I bought a lot of bare root shrubs, trees and roses. Comparing their growth with the later planted potted ones, the bare root ones grew twice as fast once established and were generally healthier. My old farmer neighbour used to joke about how much each hole cost me as I used a 'praline' for the roots that I made myself and added bone ash or blood depending on the plants need and made sure that each hole was big enough. It took me five years to plant everything alone but it was an amazing garden. The house was sold and I have no idea if the new owners were gardeners. I don't look back.
Agreed, smaller is better in the long run, but can completely understand Dan wanting something transformative. Instant morale booster and all that. Something so visitors can see the vision.
It is often a mistake to go for bigger plants that are more expensive rather than small ones. I tested many variations with my garden, soil acidity, need for water or not, shade vs sun etc. I got a few things wrong but mostly things really took off. Planting close together is another mistake that many people make, you have to consider the adult size of a tree of shrub before planting. You can 'fill in' with things that are easier to take out later. I made a potager with four large raised beds with gravel paths and put a small cherry trees in the center of the layout THEN it grew and grew and created too much shade for the plants! I had great success with hedges and although the plants seemed tiny and weak, they really grew to be strong and filled out. I saved a weeping willow from a gas station as it lay on the ground with a broken pot, needing water. I paid ten francs, about 1.5 euros and planted it on a wet area of the lawn and ten years later it was a magnificent tree and I used to sit under it on a small bench. Another rose saved from a bin became enormous with ten metre branches that I trained along the wall. I think that plants know, like some animals, that they are being saved and pay us back in full.@@madswansfan1
