    • @warbossgegguz679
      @warbossgegguz679 Год назад +1

      It was more just the mentality of the past, sort of like with how TV show preservation used to be nonexistent (which speaking as a Doctor Who fan I'm painfully aware of).
      Back in the day the concept of rereleases, remasters, and ports to later hardware wasn't really a thought people had (at least when it comes to console devs) so preserving source code and such wasn't really in their mind. The thought process was simply that once a game shipped, that was the end of it. Maybe there necessary bug fixes or revisions that would be patched into later copies, but that was again mainly a PC and Arcade thing.
      With that said, it's all the more reason I support emulation, hacking, and "piracy". Because that was just the thought process for many companies of the past to no real fault of their own.

    "If you are a dev, save your progress!" Funny thing is the recent Nintendo leaks show Nintendo headquarters in Japan is super meticulous about making sure they keep their old stuff backed up, to the point I think they're probably one of the few big name Japanese companies that does that given there have been stories that companies like Square and Konami lost the source code for some of their biggest titles (Konami infamously lost the source codes for the old Silent Hill games and the poor devs they tasked with the infamous HD Collection had to work with buggy unfinished builds that they had no idea how the original devs fixed many of the issues, and Square admitted to losing the source code for Final Fantasy VIII, which is why the remaster actually rebuilt the game in Unity, and for Kingdom Hearts 1, meaning the HD version of KH1 is actually a recreation rather than a mostly straight port).

    • @MerelyAFan
      @MerelyAFan 4 года назад +42

      Not to mention that Collection of Mana is on Switch largely because while Square had long since lost the source code for Trials of Mana, Nintendo still had it.

    • @BloodRedFox2008
      @BloodRedFox2008 4 года назад +17

      @@MerelyAFan Oh neat. Kinda makes me wonder about Super Mario RPG given that game is known to have a bit of a rights issue as while Nintendo obviously retained all rights to their existing Mario characters, Square ended up retaining the rights to the character they created specifically for that game, which is why characters like Geno and Mallow are a case of "ask Square about getting them in Smash, not Nintendo, Nintendo doesn't own them." Did Nintendo retain the source code because it's Mario related, or did Square take it with them during the "late 90s divorce" between the two parties?

    • @MerelyAFan
      @MerelyAFan 4 года назад +8

      @@BloodRedFox2008 The recent leak uncovered an early version of Konami's Castlevania IV, and all sorts of source/beta elements of the SNES Star Fox titles, which were developed more by Argonaut than Nintendo proper. Between that and that SMRPG was fairly popular game, I'd venture to say its likely Nintendo does have it, both for potentially using the assets again and for the off chance of it ever being remade.

    • @wooloo2652
      @wooloo2652 4 года назад +16

      The leaks came from China, not Japan. It's quite likely Nintendo has none of those files anymore. And the tapes that were ripped to files (Data was stored on cassette tapes at one point in time) had a lot of read errors according to the logs included therein. We've lost quite a bit. Sure, we have quite a bit more than other companies... But not a lot, and not because of Nintendo- more because of iQue.

I get that feeling specifically because Cranky says that DKC only sold well because of the visuals and that if it were compressed onto a handheld nobody would play it, while DK and Diddy say the gameplay was what sold it.

    If you'd like to try the Land trilogy, I'd recommend trying them on a GBA or Game Boy Player. The GBA can assess separate color pallets to the background tiles and foreground sprites, helping the characters be less lost in the busy graphics.

      @@zeitgeist27 For games with custom Super Game Boy pallets programmed in, you are still only going to get 4 colors in any one playfield, though they can change from level to level. On Game Boy Advance, both the background and sprites get their own 4 color pallet, helping the sprites stand out from the background. You will lose custom Super Game Boy enhancements, like pallets selected specifically for each stage, or a separately palleted status bar, but you gain twice the color in the playfield where the game play is. It's certainly a bit of give and take. I wish I had a more clear example to show, but here is DKL played on Game Boy Player. ruclips.net/video/mUv4iSeM43A/видео.html

Patches like that already exist for the Super Mario Advance series, and I hope someone makes ones for 2 and 3. Also I remember the temple world stage music was pretty great, and also I think that was a music track that wasn't in the SNES version (kinda, it's more a music remix than a music port)

    I've never heard of the GBC rendation of land 3. Strange that never came to the west. Also wasn't the OST of DKC3 changed for the GBA port due to the system speakers not being able to handle the original? Great video, btw.

      A little of both. David Wise did the majority of 1and 2’s soundtracks, but was working on other projects during 3’s development. So he wanted both to do the series justice and make a soundtrack that worked better on the gba, especially as the first games’ soundtracks sound a little off on the gba’s mono channel tiny speaker.

      The GBC version of Donkey Kong Land 3 didn't came to the USA cause Nintendo doesn't want to confuse player with the GB version of Donkey Kong Land 3 which was already released. Japanese only got it on GBC so to make up for it being a late release.

    That’s interesting, I played the GBC port of Donkey Kong Country many times when I was a kid, and I thought it did really well. That said, I never owned an SNES until January this year, so I could do a revisiting some time.
    I personally feel a bit repelled from the GBA ports as there are too many cartoony sound effects for my personal taste, but all’s well.

    One important thing about DKC3 GBA is that soundtrack was redone by David Wise this time. However, I find that soundtrack one of his weakest works, songs have intros that last for minutes, so you only hear them when you're finishing the level or entering a bonus barrel, and the original atmosphere of DKC3 gets lost with those new tracks, because those are not remixes of the original.

    My biggest issue with the GBA port is the lack of the speedup you get when you roll through an enemy. I really like that mechanic, and I'm sad they didn't include it.
    Also as a side note the SNES Version has warps too, just not the warp rooms.

    A lot of the music from DKC for the GBC was taken directly from the first Donkey Kong Land; most of the new music were actually songs from the original that didn't have remixes on DKL like the boss theme, since that was completely different on DKL, or the factory music since DKL didn't have factory levels.

    I used to think GBA DKC was trash, but I never actually played it. Seeing it now I can appreciate it, the FOV isn't zoomed in like if they just strait up ported it. The DKland 2 and DKC 2 ports I've always loved though, they were just damn amazing.

    • @starone1

      Agreed. The Game Boy Mega Mans in general don't get their due credit (except MMII, that game is legit not very good). On the surface they may look like mashed up rehashes of the NES games with similar level gimmicks, but the actual level design is different (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that) and if you're a fan who enjoys Mega Man games for the challenge, they can get pretty hard (I and III specifically are among the hardest games in the Classic series, but still fun). But yeah, MMIV is really good and MMV stands alongside the best of the NES games (and the Classic series in general) as far as I'm concerned. Mega Man V is the Mega Man 2 of the Game Boy series.
      You can usually tell what kind of Mega Man fan a person is by which games are their favorites. Derek's is 2 and 3 on NES and 2 was his first Mega Man game. Fans that weren't introduced to Mega Man through the NES games tend to not hold them in as high regard as old school fans like him do. And while I love Derek as an internet personality, as a fellow Mega Man fan, at times he comes off as an unpleasable Mega Man fan that thinks any game that doesn't play like NES 2, 3, or X1 is only "not a terrible game" or "fine" at best (hence his gushing over and lack of criticism of MM9 back in his HVGN days and conversely feeling let down by MM10 despite it being a mostly solid game that may have had too much content, a criticism he leveled against it that I do agree with).
      These are just minor criticisms from one Mega Man fan to another though. Again, Derek is generally awesome as an internet personality.

    My parents did not want me to hog the TV so a GameBoy was the only console I was allowed (also rationing batteries was a way for them to limit my screen exposure). That's why the Donkey Kong Land games where for the longest time the only way I interacted with Donkey Kong Country and I am nostalgic for them in a way I am not about the SNES games. I am really hoping Nintendo will publish a GameBoy Mini some day.
