I think that what Mr. Barsky (Dittrich) meant is that while Yuri Bezmenov perfectly described the process of Ideological Subversion (apart from the timeframes), which as he acknowledges was the strategy of the Soviet Union and the KGB, he believes that this process in the US was for the most part furthered by Americans themselves and not the KGB (he believes that the interference of the KGB played only a minor role). It’s worth mentioning that Yuri Bezmenov seemed to agree with this assessment when he said: “(...) demoralization now reaches such areas where previously not even comrade Andropov and all his experts would even dream of such a tremendous success. Most of it is done by Americans to Americans thanks to a lack of moral standards.”.

I don't understand why Patrick had such a difficult time with this concept. Of course it's being done internally. There's no way in hell the KGB has ever had that level of control in the US. Patrick was really rude to this guy on such a common sense matter.

You're very correct...it's shocking to hear a real high level insider assess a supposed insider. The real deal can know a fraud but an outsider like Patrick or an average Joe wouldnt know the difference. So it was difficult for Patrick to see someone whom he's built his arguments around regarding the KGB take a hit. It meant his own arguments and biases would take a hit. Not an easy thing to do.

My husband was stationed in West Germany in the early 1960’s. We were always warned to watch what we said. We got the chance to drive to Berlin which meant we had to drive through the Communist sector. The U.S. did not recognize East Germany and we did not have to stop at those check points, but we did have to stop at Russian check points., where they checked our identities. When we reached the East German check point we drove around and accidentally got off the main highway and started driving down an access road. we suddenly discovered our mistake when we saw two East German soldiers pickup their weapons. We made a fast backup and left that road very fast. We got to Berlin and took several tours. Saw Check Point Charlie and one tour drove by the wall and saw flowers and crosses on our side in remembrance of those East Germans shot trying to escape East Berlin. Looking into East Berlin was shocking. They still had bombed out buildings where West Berlin had been mostly rebuilt. Truly a sobering trip.

I have listened to many hours of Yuri Bezmenov. Yuri explained that espionage was only about 15% of the overall foreign affairs budget. He said the game plan was long-term and it was about psychological subversion. Jack says Yuri wasn't KGB, but was a journalist. If you listen to Yuri's biography, Yuri did pose as a journalist when he travelled to other countries, he also posed as a hippie. These were undercover identities so no one identified him. Yuri also did, in fact, say that most of what is being done to Americans is by other Americans. He said they are "half-baked intellectuals who were targets of Soviet propaganda. They are called "useful idiots". They are now in positions of professors, teachers, and running corporations. These useful idiots are now teaching an entire generation in Soviet/Communist values. He also said these people will be the most shocked when they learn what "equality" really means. He said that they are so brainwashed that they won't actually believe what they're facing until the military boots land on them. Yuri said he was the Director of Psychological Warfare for the KGB which is quite different than Jack's job working in espionage. The step-by-step process Yuri describes is occurring today right in front of our eyes. Yuri says that Americans got so greedy that they will sell the rope with which they will be hung with. He also explained it doesn't matter who the individuals at play are, because the communist "system" will always be working to take down other systems.

Yuri was familiar with the Communist propaganda as promoted by the Party and by the Soviet Union. Lots of things at that level were not KGB-driven although they did involve the KGB. Some of them worked because of the basic principles of the Marxist movements and despite the tsarist structure of the USSR. The USSR propaganda, official and unofficial diplomacy, including a less-then-effective KGB involvement, exploited the weaknesses of any modern or modernising community.
Jack Barsky was a brilliant cog in a somewhat effective but inefficient machine. Asking him about the active measures is like asking a mechanic about the strategy of competing in the Formula 1 Cup .

Jack completely agreed with the concept of subversion (who doesn't), his disagreement was that this subversion was pulled off by the KGB. Of course it wasn't pulled off by the KGB. I’m very close with some amazing ppl who grew up in a Soviet occupied area and the stories are wild, ie: bread lines were common so they went to the grocery store at 3am to wait on line to have a chance of getting anything decent. They’re some of the hardest working, most generous, loving and welcoming people I’ve ever met in the last 25 years and very well educated to boot. Luckily they got out toward the end and made a better life here but many of their friends/family stayed behind. I jokingly call them “the spies” like the tv show “The Americans” since they got out right as the wall fell and I speculate got stranded mid mission complete with 2 allegedly defunct satellite tv dishes on the roof lol. Though they’re quite comfortable now, it’s obvious they came from intense struggle, hell grandma still basically lives in a shoe on a tiny farm where they only got running water like 10 years ago and it was an honor to meet her, a holocaust survivor. These folks live frugally but nice, have multiples of all sorts of random things they didn’t have back when, keep tons of frozen foods, dinnerware, rations, household items, can butcher meats, can lots of foods and never cease to amaze me with their depth of ingenuity. Sadly though they’re still reluctant to vote because it’s been ingrained into them to just lay low and don’t get involved while my partner/their daughter is the total opposite & very outspoken but an incredibly diligent obedient 1st gen immigrant child of hardcore immigrants straight off the plane. I’m proud and glad to share the American Dream with them and always will be cuz even though my family has lived here for generations, they’re just as American as I’ll ever be.

My parents and I escaped the SU back in 1990 but my grandmother lived under Stalin for a long time. She tells me some crazy stories. I am so shocked they were able to survive. From what I gather, they depended heavily on bartering with one another. They were very frugal and never wasted food or money, so much so that they saved enough to get us out of the SU. I was young but I remember a little bit from my childhood. I mostly remember the feelings and emotions of the time. I remember how depressing everything was. People were definitely not happy, especially because of the ongoing civil unrest. When I was a little girl living in Armenia at the time, there was a civil battle between the Azerbaijani people and the Armenians. Gorbachev decided to send the Soviet soldiers to try and stop the fighting. Instead, what they did was horrific. They killed innocent people. I had a pregnant neighbor who was shot and killed while standing on her balcony. A newlywed couple was walking in a park across the street from my house and were shot and killed. They went door to door killing people. I remember having to hide under my bed with my mom and brother, terrified of the sounds of bullets hitting our roof. Luckily my dad went out to talk to the Russian soldier at our door, and I don't know what he told him, but the guy left us alone. I'm pretty sure he paid him off or something. But it was terrifying, nonetheless. I thought to myself that it would be the last time I would see my dad. This is nothing compared to the stories my grandmother tells me.

A great episode, thank you to both gentlemen for a most intriguing interview. I truly appreciate Mr Barsky for doing this and the fact that he comes across as a man who wishes to tell the world the stories of his life. He seems genuine, and honest, if a bit conceded even if it is warranted.
What Mr. Barsky fails to address is that by the time he came into the KGB, Yuri had been there and gone, so how would he know anything about him or anything he did? Secondly, and much more importantly the KGB started the "Destroy From Within" campaign in the 1930's. More than 45 years before Mr. Barsky STARTED in the KGB. Mr. Barsky was born more than 10 years after the KGB started this operation.
By the time Barsky entered the KGB the USSR was being crippled and driven to it's knees by the West. Barsky worked from 1978 to 1988. The USSR fell in 1991. He worked in a much smaller KGB than the one that was sending thousands of agents into the churches, Hollywood, our government, the media, and most importantly, our education system...in the 1930's!

I was an observer at the 1969 SDS Convention in Chicago. SDS was run by the KGB, although most of the students had no idea they were puppets of Yuri Andropov. The students were told to bathe, cut hair, sober up and infiltrate every aspect of American society, especially teaching, the law, and nonprofits to earn money. RYM I became terrorists, like William Ayers. RYM II, became the seeds of Socialism in all our organizations today. A third group had to be formed because some refused to give up drugs, but this group was turned over to the CCP. Barsky should read “Smiley’s People”, “Little Drummer Girl,” and “Rules for Radicals” to learn about the majority of KGB agents of influence in the US who don’t even know they are agents because they’re not run directly. Their numbers are now legion.

I have to take issue with Jack on challenging Yuri’s involvements as he explains it. Jack may indeed have been KGB, but like any multi layered organization, that are command oriented there are others to answer to. Police departments have Sargents, Lieutenants, Captains, and onward. So does the military. I’m certain the KGB had a similar structure. How would Jack know if Yuri also became KGB? With all of the covert activity and assignments, why would anyone feel the need to advise him. If you’ve ever been military, you might get away with defaming another from a different platoon, but no one tells you what their assignments are. You do what you’re told. You follow orders, not question them. If Yuri was hired and ordered to get involved or assigned methods of psychological subversion, it’s like SWAT. You either are or you’re not and no one will be exposing their assignments to you. Another point is that Jack never pushed back on what Yuri spoke about. He challenged wether the KGB or its agents were capable. We’ve all had those co-workers who were either highly capable or had just enough to tie their own shoes. You don’t get to choose your partners or your squad. I get the feeling Yuri took all the oxygen out of the room and Jack was not thrilled he wasn’t getting the same notoriety. It’s obvious in my mind, that Yuri’s tactics indeed came to fruition at an exponential rate that even he didn’t expect as he suggested. The Useful Idiot. The current state of the U.S. is without a doubt by design and we’ll all be feeling the after effects of psychological espionage for decades to come.

Once he got extremely defensive about Bezmenov, started stuttering nervously talking about American politics, I began to think this guy might still be working for the Russians… Downplaying the “active measures”? At this day and age? Seriously? When we have the internet and FB??? After all that we have witnessed in the past few years? It might be that he is continuing to engage in those very active measures as he is talking… Except he is not as smooth any more. I could be wrong. He is an interesting guy, but I don’t trust him. His message, in a nutshell: Russia and Putin are not the enemy; China and the liberals are… what, nothing to say about Putin? Putin’s Russia is more the enemy today than the USSR was in the 80s. They no longer care about socialism or Communism. Their hatred for America today is more real than it was then. Unlike in the 80s, not only the government but many ordinary Russians despise the US today - thanks to Putin’s propaganda. The goal of the active measures today is not to install communism in America but to destabilize the American society. Insecurities, greed, bigotry, racism, anger, gun violence, narrow mindedness and ignorance… All that makes for a great ecosystem in which “active measures” might be very effective. It is also well known that the American conservatives have been of great interest to the Russian intelligence, and they have been the primary target for the active measures. Remember Maria Butina, the so called “gun activist” from Russia (there are no gun activists and no guns are allowed in Russia, it’s an authoritarian state.) She pretended to be a conservative and successfully found her way into some influential circles. Most Putin’s agents pretend to be conservatives in America, that is a fact too. And so does Barsky. It’s clear he realized that he had messed up the interview, almost blew his cover, and tried to smoothen things up in the end…

Agents don't always know the full plan. In fact, (I'm only guessing), it's generally not a good idea for active field agents to know the full plan in many cases, so that if they are interrogated, they only have a small piece of the puzzle. If Mr. Bezminov was making up everything he said, he's either a super lucky guesser, or some sort of profit, because many of the things he stated are happening as we speak and have taken place in pretty much the same order he's stated. Luckily a physical land invasion would be a strategic and logistical nightmare, in part due to the layout of the land and the shear size of the US, but largely due to the fact that there are so many skilled owners and operators of firearms baked right into the citizenry, "...a gun behind every blade of grass. My guess is that Mr. Bezminov wasn't a fraud, but as I often state; I'm just a guy on the internet with an opinion, so... 🤷‍♂️

Of course not but just because you aren’t paid the same as an American doesn’t mean you didn’t greatly benefit from the relationship with the US economy. Life is complicated. I believe both. Yuri had the big picture, a level where the KGB and even the Soviet Union were not in control, but simply very active and invested actors. Jack is familiar with the cogs and wheels of a specific machinery which was operated with a certain level of effectiveness, but which could never understand the American exceptionalism, because it was outside its leaders' ideological worldview.
Yes, it was the Americans that have been embracing, collectivism, egalitarianism and eventually communism, but the USSR did play an active role and managed - albeit indirectly, as a core pillar of the socialist movements - to tip the balance in the wrong direction. E.g. Bernie Sanders is likely not a KGB spy, but he and his political following have been a product of the Soviet propaganda and unimaginable without the huge amount of resources the Soviet Union invested in promoting their worldview.

Agree, and the way Intelligence Agencies operate is they are compartmentalized Globally. One branch of the agency will not know a lot about another branch of the Agency. Does explain why he thinks Yuri was a "KGB Imposter Defector". USA has rotted from within for a while with Marxist ideology and methods. We have done it to ourselves for the most part. Before the internet I'm not convinced the Soviet Union had that great of reach in USA agencies. I think Yuri came from an influential Soviet Union Military family. He would know and could be an asset to the Soviet Government. Maybe he was not KGB, but he clearly knows how Marxism works and defected to Canada because of that.
The FULL Bezmenov interview seems to express that. He says he was a Co-Opted agent for the KGB Propaganda wing. Most likely never involved in the on the ground KGB espionage agents. He probably understands the ideology of Marxism, but may have not been a trained "Spy". ruclips.net/video/UrS1qDcgdTk/видео.html

  • @mnfowler1

Jack is right. We Americans did to ourselves the steps that Yuri Bezmenov outlines and attributes to Soviet planning. The Soviets wished they could take credit for the rise of the left in the 1960s through the 1980s, but they were fooling themselves (and fooling many U.S. conservatives). Just because the Soviets wished to cause the rise of the left in America, did not mean the Soviets actually caused it. Americans were open to Marxism which was largely coming from European intellectuals who came to teach in America, and American intellectuals were lapping it up and especially adapting these ideas because they knew how America works (and doesn't) from the inside. A good example is Critical Race Theory (CRT) which would never have been concocted by a Soviet Marxist because it is a bastardization of Marxism that was particularly made possible by Herbert Marcuse's critical theory in the 1960s and '70s. (Marcuse was a German-born socialist who worked for the OSS [qv, if you don't know what it is] during World War Two and became a U.S. citizen.) The idea of critical theory was that you could take away Marx's class identity and plug in whatever social identity you want. CRT uses race instead of class to analyze all social conflict. This is anathema to a true Marxist like the Brit Mike Cole who argues in his book on CRT that any analysis of racial conflict just masks a class-based conflict. The Soviets never would have come up with CRT; it's a completely home-grown analysis and all the more virulent because of it.

Whether Yuri Bezmenov was a KGB man or a "journalist" is a purely semantic question. That the "journalist" infiltrarion and influence has been incredibly successful I have no doubt. If it has been further strengthened by American comrades even without foreign guidance, that only makes it more successful and dangerous.

I feel the interview had many opportunities missed to validate information. His disapproval of "Yuri" based on "The KGB didn't have this kind of power" demonstrates the actual heart of intelligence operations. Cast doubt on the obvious to continue operations. He is no doubt an intellectual, but has less than intellectual responses? The fact that he "quit" the KGB as an illegal, the most prized agents for any service, and yet he has lived openly, says or implies something when the KGB as well as most communist countries, seek out and eliminate these people. Unless they still have use as a disinformation agents using the cover "Defector".
The crux of these missions are compromise. Something he didn't say even once I believe. How much power does an "organization" need if your goal is to target morally and financially compromised individuals in power and social influence? They do the leg work for the organization and the organization simply manages and directs the targets into zones of influence. His dismissal of "Yuri" while literally agreeing with fundamentally everything should have driven the interview at that point. He simply obfuscated for 82 minutes and burned the clock never being asked a difficult question.
"Wouldn't it make sense for a prideful organization like the KGB, to "kill" the credibility of a damaging defector?"
"Why would another KGB agent defector dismiss this individual, while confirming the intent, techniques, procedures of the KGB he exposed?"
"Doesn't it seem like you might be running a little disinformation yourself?"

Jack agreed with that to the nth degree, where he disagreed was that this subversion is rooted in anyway by the KGB's influence. This is being done internally and it's so painfully obvious. The KGB has never had that level of influence in the US.

Jack admitted it himself about how competitive he is. I believe he sees Yuri as his competitor in regards to his present occupation. I could be wrong but I don’t believe a lot of people understand the strength of competition in some individuals.

It works both ways. I was in my late thirties before i actually realized that most people are not entrepreneurs; they are not competitive in the sense that was normal in my family and probably largely in my school. But it's true a lot of competent, quite decent people are not competitive at all In the way that I assumed.

"Who did it?" -- He never heard of Gus Hall? Gus said long ago, "We've already won" (paraphrase). The fact that it was done implies that somebody did it. Patrick understands this, while Jack either doesn't, or else meant to hide it if he could.

Wow!!! This guy seems to be very freaking active!!! He gives you what he wants AND deflects everything else to make an argument with a comment that is a fact, calling it a fact. In other words he calls what his “personal comment” is a fact. Does that sound like some of the Intel Analysts in CNN, CNBC ets., sounds like? Everything that Yuri said in the past has being proven TODAY! I wouldn’t be surprise if his daughter is in as well or he is trying to fool her as well.

It is the US National Security State that brings the country down! Top CIA officer: we are leading the world in International Terrorism
The CIA is an extraordinary transnational criminal organization that manages the international drug trade at leads the world in covert assassinations.
The CIA creates the problems then sells the solution to the US tax payer.
In fact, it was the CIA labs that invented CRACK, and then brought it to cities across the USA!
a Senate committee investigated the several Contra-connected corporations that had been used by the State Department to supply "humanitarian aid" to the region. The committee connected the crack-cocaine epidemic to the Contra-connected corporations and found that the drugs were distributed on the streets in Los Angeles. CIA participation, albeit indirect, was a result of a partnership with well-known drug trafficker Alan Hyde. Hyde had been known by the criminal syndicate world to be a large distributor and trafficker of cocaine. From 1987 to 1989, the CIA cooperated with Hyde and used his vast network of covert shipping lanes in the Caribbean to supply arms to the Contras. The CIA operated during the crucial moments of proxy-war against the Sandinista government. The Central American Task Force had warned the CIA of involvement with Hyde, but the CIA persisted. Regarding involvement with Hyde, CIA deputy director Robert Gates remarked, "We need to use him, but we also need to figure out how to get rid of him."[28] Despite intelligence suggesting Hyde's involvement with the Tampa/St. Petersburg air smuggling ring, the CIA authorized the use of more storage facilities owned by Hyde.
In 1985, another Contra leader "told U.S. authorities that the group was being paid $50,000 by various Colombian traffickers for help with a 100-kilo cocaine shipment and that the money would go 'for the cause' of fighting the Nicaraguan government." A 1985 National Intelligence Estimate revealed cocaine trafficking links to a top commander working under Contra leader Edén Pastora.[49] Pastora had complained about such charges as early as March 1985, claiming that "two 'political figures' in Washington told him last week that State Department and CIA personnel were spreading the rumor that he is linked to drug trafficking in order to isolate his movement."[50] In June 1985, it was found that $1.5 million in DEA seized money was used to help fund the Contras.[51]
On December 20, 1985, the charges were laid out in an Associated Press article after an extensive investigation which included interviews with "officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Customs Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Costa Rica's Public Security Ministry, as well as rebels and Americans who work with them." Five American Contra supporters who worked with the rebels confirmed the charges, noting that "two Cuban-Americans used armed rebel troops to guard cocaine at clandestine airfields in northern Costa Rica. They identified the Cuban-Americans as members of the 2506 Brigade, an anti-Castro group that participated in the 1961 Bay of Pigs attack on Cuba. Several also said they supplied information about the smuggling to U.S. investigators."
