    This video deserves 100000000 likes. It is the most informative video I've found about this beautiful, STUBBORN plant. And to make it even better we live in the same state! I came here from garden answer after reading your comment there. I have a suggestion for you if you dont mind. You should put "Central Fl" on yor titles so that people can find you better/easier, cause ive been looking for Florida gardeners for a long time and there are just a few. I'm pretty sure that if the rest of your videos are so informative like this one you are going to gain a lot of new subscribers. 😁

If you type it into Google search, you'll be able to see it on a map😉 Lots of pretty lakes where we are now. We just bought our first house last yr and I can't wait to transform the landscape. Believe it or not, I'm still having struggles with it, which I'm showing you all, real soon. It hates our weather for some reason and any slight change, they become very irritated and unhappy lol. I'm so glad I could help. Its what I really love to do! I know growing can be difficult at times and I love to share the experiences I've gone through, in hope to make it a little easier on all of you. Thank you for being here and don't hesitate to ask if you need anything.. commenting on one of my videos is a quick way to get a hold of me😉 I really appreciate you being here and couldn't keep doing these videos if it wasn't for you watching and following along🐞🌻🐝

    I lost a few of mine after placing them outside in the sun. After doing some research on these beautiful plants I discovered that they sometimes have extra bulbs inside the soil and you can plant them to start a new plant, unfortunate for me I had already thrown them out in the trash when they died. Wish I had known sooner because these are a bit pricey. 😢

      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад +1

      Aww. These plants are so sensitive to everything.. seriously lol. I try not to fuss with them too much, unless I have to.. In my experience, that mesh piece really does a number on the plant because it doesn't let the roots form like it should. I ended up loosing all my leaves after repotting, but don't get discouraged if that happens.. the plant may look dead, but the bulb and roots should be alive (unless the bulb is mushy).. its tough to get a happy watering schedule for these so I just water whenever the soil is almost dry.. leaving it slightly moistened most of the time. Be careful not to overwater though😉 They love humidity and do really well in really bright, but indirect light.. Mine took about 2 weeks to recoup and then started growing new healthy leaves again 🍃 I ended up with 4 to 5 plants total after removing the mesh and repotting.. So unexpected and appreciated 😊

      Could be the type of water if it contains certain minerals. They're sensitive to certain things,, so I use spring water, rain water or let my well water sit out for 24hrs before using it. It could be a lot of things and it's hard to say..

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain

      This plant likes its roots to stay moist, but not soaking wet and soggy. I let the containers dry out 3 1/4 of the way to the bottom than water again. They also like a ton of humidity.. if they don't receive enough humidity it can cause brown to black leaf edges.

    Hi Stacey- I bought a medium size plant a month ago and it was on my windowsill. It was receiving a couple of hours of direct sunlight in the morning around 8am. I have a northeast facing window. The leaves started dropping a couple of days ago and I saw that the soil was too moist so I added some perlite to the soil and kept it in a windowless with bright light with no sunlight. The leaves kept dropping and yellowing. I took a look at roots today and unfortunately the bottom stems were mushy and had a bad odor eventhough the roots looked healthy. I took it as root rot and tore apart the whole plant. It has tiny bulb and I want to plant them but I don’t know if it will work???
    I did put some of the tiny bulbs 2 weeks ago left it in a little greenhouse under a grow light but it hasn’t sprouted. Any tips?

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад +1

      Patience and time is really the only thing you can do right now. Seems like you tried everything I would have. I wouldn't keep them in any sun if It was me, even under a grow light, as It can burn the leaves. It takes quite a while for leaves to start growing again, especially if you just have the bulb left. Let me know how it turns out. I would watch the watering too, just water when the soil dries out all the way to the bottom. At least that's what I do for mine and they are very happy.

      How could you tell the soil is dry to the bottom and how long does it take to dry? Do you use a soil meter?

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад

      In the beginning you might want to use a moisture meter because that's going to help you determine when to water best. Now, I could tell just by picking up my pots and feeling the weight of it. The amount of time it takes to dry out, all depends on the type of climate and situation it's in. If you have really humid climate, it might take a little longer for the soil to dry out... if you have really dry climate, it's probably going to dry out a bit faster.. It all depends on what's going on and the type of soil you're using, matters a whole lot, with how fast it dries out.

    I just had to repot my polly because the whole thing was super wobbly! I had never repotted a plant so I had no clue what I was doing. I saw the mesh thing ignored it. But over the weekend 2 leaves got super yellow and i had to pull them...i watched a video and found out i have to remove the mesh. So Monday after work I did. I found 5 small bulbs. Which I've replanted 3 in this same soil and 2 in a smaller cup. I probably did it wrong! But yes i definitely didnt plant it likr this. The plant is very wobble if its higher to the surface. The root is also slanted. How do u keep i tight on the top of soil? Hoe deep do i plant it? I habe a smaller plant it now has 3 leaves but 1 is turning yellow all week. I wish I can post a pic of my plant here so u can see it.

      I'm so happy you got so many plants out of it. Not many people know about that mesh casing around the root system. Its really important to remove it because although the roots grow through it, it causes a lot of rotting and stunting of growth in the end. Yellowing leaves can mean over-watering, among many things.. I always let the soil dry out completely before watering again, just making sure not to let it stay dry in between the waterings. Over time you'll get the hang of it. Stay positive and stay inspired, remember it's all a learning process.

    So do you water the soil as you throw the soil in the box. When I watered mine it became like soup the dirt raised. Maybe i need to mix the 2 soils you spoke about and use the white things. I'm a new plant mom not sure the name lol

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад

      I'm not sure what you mean by do I water as I throw the soil in the box. But when I do water fresh soil, just out of the bag, it can become raised up and start pooling up top because it's too dry and hasn't become compact yet. Usually for fresh soil that's dry, I mist the top with a little sprayer first. That will allow the water to sink down quickly, when you water all the way through, avoiding that pooling on top.

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад +1

      Those white little beads are called perlite... They help with providing extra drainage in my soil because I live in Florida and we get really humid and rainy weather here. Which keeps my soil wet for too long, causing a lot of problems. So I started adding perlite and mixing just a handful of succulent soil and that seems to do the trick. If you live in a drier climate, you might not have to add the succulent soil, with the potting mix.. it all depends on the type of climate you get😊 No problem at all.. ask away, that's why I'm here.. and I love to help whenever I can😊

      @@StaceyHerewegrowagain would orchid mix be ok for a substitute for succulent soil? I have this! 😊

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад

      That's a great question. I don't feel like orchid bark is good just because over time it breaks down and causes the soil to stay wet for too long, encouraging bacteria to rot the roots of the succulents. The bark starts to deteriorate after a yr or so, which ends up holding quite a bit of moisture. I used to add orchid bark to my succulent soil but had to stop because it was breaking down too fast and my succulents were not happy 🙄 I just use succulent soil with added perlite and pumice. You can buy a huge 3lb bag of pumice online for about $30.. I just got mine on Amazon and they delivered it within days. Amazon is my go to gardening shop now.. pretty much everything I need, I go to Amazon for. Remember to check around for sales and deals too.

    I just got a new alocasia Polly. It came with spots. Should I cut the entire leaf off or cut back the leaf? Any help from anyone out there would be much appreciated. I’m in love with my new “Ela” I would really prefer to not cut off the entire leaf but I am a little worried it might have an infestation.

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад +2

      If it has an infestation on the leaf than I would probably cut the leaf off and treat the plant with a pesticide, but it all depends on how severe it is. Are you treating with any pest preventative yet? I use 100% Cold pressed neem oil. It could also be from letting the soil dry out too much inbetween the waterings. If the soil dries out completely and stays that way for a little bit, it'll start to show brown and yellow spots on the leaves. It could also be the water your using. These are sensitive to chemicals in the water so I use distilled water, or rain water is best. They don't like too much food either. I only feed with a diluted fertilizer, once every month or so during its active growing season.

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад +1

      Hope this helps. Lmk if you need anything else 🌱 It's so hard to say what it could be without seeing it. These are known to have jiffy tubes around their root systems, which cause them to choke out, where the middle of the roots sit on the bottom. I remove that immediately when repotting, after bringing them home. (It's a mesh like material and it's hard to miss).. It can cause the plant to perish overtime so you have to be careful with that. These are a bit sensitive to everything so just take it slow when changing things up, feeding, or repotting. They come back from shock pretty easily though so don't get discouraged 😉 it's all a learning process and sometimes a plant needs to shed old leaves to produce new healthy ones. Old and brown leaves can take away from the energy of the plant. If it's severe, more than 50% I would cut the leaf off. If it's the only leaf and its not browning more than 50%. You can try cutting the bad parts off and see what happens. The ends should heal over in a day, just remember not to expose the leaves to water until they fully dry, to avoid spreading any diseases😊
