- Join our gun slung, wasp stung hero, "Kimberley," as he regains his composure one throw at a time, shortly after being attacked by a sand wasp (true story). He re-establishes his place at the top of the food chain in style, and demos Throwsticks.com's newest back woods survival multi-tool in the process.
Benjamin Scott from Throwsticks.com was actually stung on his throwing hand between shots, in the first scene filmed. This set the tone of the production. You can hear one of the other attacking insects in the first scene where the camera also adds mysterious sound effects of its own. Some things are just meant to be....
1 large watermelon, 12 cans of cheap soda, and 2 sand wasps were definitely harmed during the filming of this production....

My mother being of the Bundjalung people of northern New South Wales, I feel the need to educate the people that the Boomerang need not be thrown.
To realise it's true effectiveness, one need only consider it's edge, and imagine it when used in combination as fighting sticks (!!!).....There are particular fighting or war boomerang, and they break bones like one was merely snapping twigs, and are light, aerodynamic and effective.....
Something to consider indeed.
They would take the stickfighting practitioners by storm....
The war boomerang are truly incredible..!!.

This actually happened to me in Canal Street New York City. I was wearing a Dryzabone under which I had tucked a boomerang into my belt. I was en route to present it as a gift. I was accosted by an irate stall holder when I tried to barter for Joy perfume. I had to take out the boomerang and wave it about threatening to take the head off at least one of the five who had gathered around to do me harm. I’ve never been so happy to hear a woop woop of a filthy black and white as it pulled into the kerb like the cavalry. My mate, who by this time was “courageous” enough to scurry to the other side of the street, came back on scene and joined me in the disgusting back seat while we were transported to our hotel on Broadway. The year was 1995.

Just got mine in yesterday....beautiful, quality piece of kit. It flies true every time...just gotta work on my consistency now. They are intuitive and quick to pick up, but I've got some practicing to get as good as you!
Awesome to hear! Keep practicing. I'm most accurate when I'm warmed up and not over thinking my throws, just using instincts! It's great! On this model I prefer to throw from the trailing arm although in the film I did this very little. It sets up the attitude of the stick to really sail without losing power from the start. Good stuff!

Is there a reason why you sometimes hold it with the point forward and sometimes with the curve/arc forward. Do you get different results?
Good question. The Stinger will work both ways perfectly, if thrown hard enough, and I wanted to demo that in the video. It works by far the easiest when thrown point back, which is what we recommend in the instructions we ship with it. I prefer this technique most of the time with this model. Most sticks are the opposite of this. The tapered ends and deep bend on this one are the reason why this method is superior. Point back throwing helps with a good retention through the throw, good smooth release at the correct time (not too early), and it creates a forward rather than downward bias to the plane the stick rotates on, enhancing preliminary lift. Both methods can be practiced for more diverse uses and skill development.

Does it float?
The Stinger is heavier than water and will not float. This is the same as with the best historical sticks of the same. A very dense material is an asset for delivering a long flight and hard blow.

@Throwsticks Channel Why don’t you make the big heavy Pilbara number 7 two handed thrower? Nothing survives the impact of that thing, Roos get broken from it.
Awesome suggestion! Maybe some day we will do that. We do make a single handed Figure 7 but haven't produced a two handed one yet. We have generally found that heavy sticks are not popular with our customers, but we enjoy them and there's definitely a space available in our lineup for something like this someday!

have you considered building XXL-sized boomerangs?
So yes I have made huge, long sticks like this. They are very powerful and maybe I will release a model like that some day. They have very high drag, however, due to the length and the torque on the wing tips makes the ranges shorter. But they are still really amazing. In general, our larger models seem to have less interest than the smaller ones. I think maybe people feel they can't throw something so big, but with kylies it is very possible.

How do these compare to the cold steel ones overall ?
You really can't compare them, the "Cold Steel Boomerang" is just a big piece of plastic that not even creates lift and has no tuning at all. Ben's Kylies on the other hand are truly state of the art technology, he is most likely the best kyliemaker in the world today. It's not only about range, but reliable accuracy over the greater distances.
@@dannyh7575 I'm sure with the right modifications (which would have to be done by the consumer) the coldsteel one would probably be better than it is now. that being said i would still love to get my hands on a few of these and a couple Coldsteel ones for modification and cosplay reasons
@@dark96744 I did rework a CS-Boomerang a few years back. The Polypropylene is soft enough for carving, but is tending to bend and twist over time. Main problem ist the general shape, it's not right for this size and weight. It is holding the momentum but it's hard to get a decent tuning and it will not release clean for aimed throws. If you're interested in throwing for sports, buy a pair of Ben's Kylies, if you're interested in Kyliemaking, buy a pair of Ben's Kylies, develop a good throwingtechnique and start to work with wood, but be prepared for drastic lifechanges, ist is such a complex art.
notice you changing positions when throwing, sometime with point leading, others with point to the rear. Any reason for the change?

Release date will be October 1st for this new product, with price starting at $59.00. This is our entry level product with the shortest flight range of anything we make, but it's a lot of fun. They are made from black polycarbonate, which is the most durable substance for throwstick making I've found on the planet. Nearly impossible to break. Eventually repeated impacts on boulders and sharp rocks can break them but it's not common until a lot of abuse has been dished out.
If you check out our other videos you'll find we offer other products presently, which are larger than this and feature flight ranges out even past 120 meters.

Have you ever tried to do a plastic cast the throwsticks? Maybe a polyurethane 65d or something similar.
Jerron, Thanks for the suggestion. Injection molding would allow us to reduce the price on the products significantly but at the cost of quality which would go below our standards. The use of softer and lighter weight materials like polyurethane aren't ideal for throwsticks which take impacts and need to be rigid enough to hold a tune. We are carving each of our throwsticks individually in our shop from extruded polycarbonate. The labor is more but the finished product is well worth the difference and we keep the prices as good as we can by cutting out the middle man. These are hand crafted products, made in the USA.

Hey there Benjamin. I’m a craftsman with a strong background in bladesmithing and a love for man-powered projectiles. Watching your videos has inspired me to attempt a steel version of one of these throwing sticks (a little bit of Mad Max may have also helped). I’d like to know what you have to say for beginners who are new and want something that will work. I’m worried that with steel I may not be able to carve out the turbolator designs.
What are you thoughts on this idea? I’d like to hear your say.

I've never tried steel but my experience with other materials with high specific gravity is that they won't produce adequate lift at human generated velocities to carry their own weight. To produce lift your airfoil will have to have some thickness, but then it would be too heavy.
You wouldn't need turbulator's with steel since you'd be making it so thin, but something made of steel would need a very optimized airfoil for lift to compensate for the specific gravity. The overall weight would still need to be under a pound so it could be thrown.
As long as you don't expect flight, it would still be a fun project. Send me pictures if you do one. :)

Thank you for the reply. I was sort of curious about that, I noticed a lot of these throwing sticks are very light for their size. I was thinking of using making a laminate with polycarbonate and thin steel from a handsaw blade. I think this could produce the optimum weight and thickness.
Could you give an explanation of the airfoil design? I’ve been reading but the terms of incidence and such are pretty confusing.
Also I’d like to know how thick you make these; my polycarbonate is about 1/4” thick.

Not so Frog The benefits of steel, if any, seem to diminish in a laminate. Whatever the case, the pinning would have to be very strong. The impact these take is substantial.
In terms of tuning there is so much to it that advanced boomerang makers often can’t make a working Kylie. There are only a handful of Kylie makers in the world as a result. What we are doing is historic here in terms of flight performance. Tuning is not intuitive because many aspects contradict established expectations. It took me thousands of experiments and years to learn. I’m unable to pass it on simply. If I ever publish a book on the topic it will be a thick one. I would refer you to our science page at throwsticks.com for the basics.
In terms of airfoils it comes down to learning numerous subtle techniques to alter airfoil performance and then applying those within the balance of the system as indicated by a careful observation of the stick’s current behavior. Describing the subtle and correct way to change an angle on the surface of a wing at a specific point on the wing is not easy. Nor even describing the effect it has on the flight path at various stages of the flight. Add angles of incidence and drag and it is even more complex. We’ve developed our own vocabulary here to assist. There are just so many things involved. A Kylie is a dynamic instrument which continuously changes angle of attack according to the wishes of the designer for a given starting velocity and rate of spin. Straight flight from a curved stick comes from total mastery of the system.
1/4” polycarbonate can be used on small throwsticks and particularly non traditional designs. We use 1/2” for most of our work. It all depends on what pattern you are designing.
Thanks again for the reply. The specific shape I was thinking of is called a Valari. A type of throwing stick used in India. These have a large knob on the end of the heavily curved wing which allows good grip. The other end is cut off square, and sometimes studded. I believe it has an airfoil design similar to those of the aborigines.
These were said to be able to travel up to 130 yards and many of them were made from Iron, but I have my doubts.
I’m going to try and start doing some experiments with airfoil for myself, and I’ll see where I get with that I suppose.
@@LESANN996 It's on my list of things to do to experiment with the Valari myself and maybe develop a model for sale. I haven't made one yet so can't say how they perform. There are a lot of projects ahead for Throwsticks.com as I can find time.
A lot of historical claims about range are exaggerated. Throwsticks are impressive and 80 yards can seem like twice that. Objectively, at present, on average I get about 142-153 yards out of my best 13-14 ounce sticks (Central Desert Hunters), as measured by an accurate device. I have to do a lot of extra work to get them that good and I would expect a more gifted thrower might achieve a lot further distances, but I have yet to prove that.
Let me know how you do. It's a lot of walking/running but a good way to get outdoors :)

Hey are you gonna do a hunting video?
I'd love to put some good turkey hunting on film. Unfortunately other videos of this nature have been ripped down by youtube for us in the past and we don't want to risk our channel so we'll have to give it longer consideration. Suffice it to say, throwsticks have put meat on the fire in some of the harshest climates on earth for thousands of years.

Yes I've made some carbon steel versions. Oddly, they are disappointing because they must be made really thin to fly, thus reducing overall weight. They tend to deliver less impact due to their flexibility, as a result and have less tendency to penetrate stuff due to this. They don't allow the airfoil shape which allows for proper tuning and that is a disadvantage too. I will continue experiments to see if specific shapes are advantaged, but the polycarbonate has proven the best material in the world for these purposes after trying many materials. To work optimally thick steel blades would need to be shot out of a weapon at high velocity to fly properly at their specific gravity.

Thanks for the report. Keep in mind that it takes practice. The Stinger has the most difficult grip of all the sticks to master because it tapers down. Throw by holding the reverse arm of the stick from what you generally see me doing in the video, for best results. Choke up on the grip to wherever it's comfortable. We find that with practice people are getting great results and ranges out to about 80 meters straight out. You may also email us a video of your throwing to our email and we can coach your technique.
