Bolas: Primitive Hunting Weapon

  • Bolas (or boleadoras) is a primitive hunting weapon that was used by American natives. It consists of three solid balls at the end of three cords that are joined together at the opposite end, however bolas can have two and even more than three balls. Bolas can be made with a variety of natural materials and are a good choice in a survival situation because of their simplicity and effectiveness.

    FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
    Who films you?
    I do. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything.
    How many cameras do you use?
    Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
    Where is this place?
    In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share exactly where I go.
    Do you workout?
    Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently and collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
    Are you vegan or vegetarian?
    I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).

    First time I see one of your videos and I'm already a subscriber! In Argentina, we call them boleadoras, both native peoples and gauchos used them for hunting, catching cattle, and as a weapon. From what I've seen, cordage here is usually longer, about 3 feet or more. That's probably the reason why you feel more comfortable with longer rope. Looking forward to seeing the second part!

    Chad, you got it all wong, man !
    I'm from Brazil and at the south we have the "gaúcho" culture that uses "boleadeiras" for centurys.
    It came from many different indian tribes that used it for hunting and for war.
    To throw it, you never hold at the meadle of the strings like you did.
    You must hold the boleadeira by one of the stones and swing the other two over your head, get momentum and let it go.
    The precision will be much better and the span of the stones flying will be the double.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  3 года назад +5

      Hmm, yeah I still have to practice. I have seen it done both ways but if you say that the traditional way is like you said then I will practice that.

    • @Gay_Nigga_Hoodmoments
      @Gay_Nigga_Hoodmoments 2 года назад

      American indians grabbed from the middle of the string to increase the kinetic energy upon impact and that also increases range how ever grabbing it on the stones so that the string is loose in theory may be slightly more accurate and farther it's a trade off as you get less of a tangle meaning the bird gets away much easier due to the loss of the kinetic energy and the shock to the animal bolas can also be made out of wood to for water fowl such as ducks and geese either way both work it's just up to the user which way to throw it and how strong the user is there is no right or wrong way to use it

    • @kevingray4980
      @kevingray4980 2 года назад

      @@Gay_Nigga_Hoodmoments Exactly! You tweak the design and technique depending on the game, or else use what's most familiar. What works best for cattle may not be ideal for duck, but the main thing is hitting the target.

    • @you2tooyou2too
      @you2tooyou2too 6 месяцев назад

      @@kevingray4980 Keving: You have the right idea. The bola lasts longer if you throw it by the knot rather than one of the weights, and you have more control and a wider target if one of the lanyards is shorter than the other two. There are a lot of anachronisms in the vid, the main one is that this really does not work well in woods or brush, and is used mostly in open savanna, tundra, or grasslands.

    • @GodlordBazi
      @GodlordBazi 3 года назад +1

      Well, depends on what you want to do. If you throw them the way you described it, they spread up twice as far, as you said, but it's really hard to control them and your range is only about two thirds since you'd have to put more force into it for the one bola in your hand. There were some native tribes which used to throw their bolas that way, but this wasn't the case for every single animal they were hunting.
      .
      An easier technique is to throw the bolas like he did, but without letting them spin arround your head that often. One additional spin is okay (if you're advanced already) in order to gain more force, after that it's just getting harder to control them and therefore a lot harder to hit your target. Just hold the bolas at the end of the rope with your prefered hand and the weights with your other hand. Then give the weights a little push upwards, swing the bolas once arround your head and release them after one full spin. This technique is - as I already mentioned - a lot more accurate and your range is increased due to more weight at the end of the ropes, which benefits centrifugal force in terms of acceleration. You probably wouldn't use that technique when hunting big animals like horses or something like that though, since the spread is not enough to catch two legs at a time.

    For the boleadora to work correctly, hold a ball with your left hand and with the other hand turn the rest from the central knot. When you release you must try to direct the central knot at the target and release both hands, you will see how the ropes unfold. and rotate about the central knot, covering more impact area.

    My lunatic uncle was so sick with his bolas lol. I want to say he had only two of them but they were almost identical, and I’m almost certain they had just two weights. He would hold one weight to swing and throw it, and the drunker he got the faster you’d have to run to not get face-planted because he was unbelievably good at timing his throw to hit you when you were mid-stride so that both legs were as close together as possible. He told us some cartoonish story as to how he crafted them and learned that skill but it was admittedly fkin awesome lol.

    Soy Argentino y nunca cace con boleadoras pero si jugué con ellas. No se arrojan sosteniéndolas del punto medio, se arrojan sosteniéndola de una bola (que suele ser en forma de gota para mejor agarre) . La idea es que giren en el aire y se enreden en las patas de la presa, por eso suelen tener de 3 a 4 mts de diámetro (o mas dependiendo de la presa) . Hay una versión que se llama Bola loca o Pampa, que consiste en una sola bola y la idea es impactar con la bola a la presa.

    There's a third technique to make them, but it requires a bone or wood needle, getting yarn from some animal like an alpaca (or perhaps flax or similar fine fibers?), and needle-binding an enclosure over the stone, clay, or metal weights. Then you weave strings through that enclosure which anchors them very securely, and then twist those strings into the tether cords. Rest is just knots, or for finer quality - splicing. Only thing is the "woven" version may be a bit more time intensive than some other approaches, and such would be found from cultures already known for their textile work.

    i use to have real boleadoras (not the one sold as ornament or torist souvenir) cordage was of leather and not less than 6 feet from bola to bola. Also from the center two bolas rope are shorter than one. Thats because they were also used as a defense weapon, you trap the long rope bola betwen foot finger and use the other two to swing and hit the attacker. bolas are made of heavy stone about 8 cm diameter with the rock carved where the rope cyrcle, They are thore with good elastic leather wet in that part so they strech when they dry, i used even on horses as a kid.

Like I would never be able to turn grass into long strands and then think of what to use to make a bola. Or even something like an atle atle let alone a primitive bow.
