My parents moved to Crawley from Croydon, and worked at Gatwick airport, something to do with the catering.
Anyway, my claim to historic fame, although nobody knows of me unless they look at the records, is, I was the first person born in the Crawley hospital.
Many years and many moves later (my father got involved with the military), here I am in Adelaide, South Australia, looking at youtube clips of Crawley.

I presently live in Crawley and have done so all my life. It's nice to see how things have changed from the seventies. Some places were hardly recognizable but others haven't changed much at all! It was funny to hear the buildings of Hazelwick School described as modern as those same buildings are still being used today, needless to say they don't appear very modern and well finished anymore.

Crawley really was a great place to grow up as a child in the 1970s, lots of happy memories, everything was new, new house new school new sports centre, a great enviroment for kids, and there was a real feeling of optimism for the future in the town 👍

In response to the people putting Crawley down, I would respectfully disagree. I was born and bred in Tilgate and think it is a wonderful town. I spent 7 years living in Vauxhall before moving back home and have seen what a truly tough place is like. Crawley is peaceful, safe and has access to so much. It is not the concrete jungle sone people claim it to be.

I'm a Crawley boy. I love the town growing up was so peaceful.
I went to Thomas Bennett and lived in Broadfield played for Corinthians fc.
Unfortunately the community atmosphere has died off,
I think alot of it started with the knocking down of the of youth club/play centres where i spent my happy childhood. Now kids have nowhere to socialise nowhere safe to go and get to know other kids from different backgrounds.
Now people are shoehorned into horrible brutal narrow street developments or worse or bunged up in brutalist sardine cans nightmare monstrosities like the old babcock building in the town.
    Maybe I'm just getting old.
    But happy memories.

Thanks for posting - great memories! I was born and raised in Tilgate and still live on the outskirts of town. Sadly, the town has gone very downhill and has suffered badly from mass immigration from Asia, Africa and now eastern Europe. I went to our local amenity tip today and all 3 members of staff I spoke to were eastern European - two couldn't even speak English, but luckily could gesture and point!
Yup - Crawley was a great place to grow up in as a kid but is now largely a dump in many areas and unrecognisable from this film. I feel so bad for the youngsters here today, including my kids, and what sort of future they'll have. I should have emigrated to Australia when I had the chance 10 years ago!

I've lived here since 1982, my entire life, it has always been horrible and lacking in any kind of culture or style. When I walk through town on a weekday it's like living in a leper colony. A parade of the dying, the sick and the lame with multitudes of people of working age standing outside betting shops spitting in the street. It's their ignorant faces screwed up in utter incredulity I can't stand. Before anyone says it, they are all British, I'd swap everyone of them for a hardworking EU migrant - they're the only people in this town with a work-ethic and some self-respect.

The guy who plays "Martin" looks suspiciously like a "Martin" I knew, but his parents weren't Stan & Vivian! Where on earth did you get this from?! Brilliant! My wife and I and our 2 daughters lived and worked in Crawley from 1967 to 1981.
We appear briefly in the film. We always wondered what happened to the film and have never seen it before.
We lived in Gossops Green at Trent Close, [shown after about 10mins[. I taught at West Green and then at Bishop Bell.. both schools have since closed. The Teachers Centre, in Tilgate at the time, was a splendid learning environment and represented the ethos of the Town during those early years. Friends united.

I lived in Crawley from 1969 when my parents moved us from South London until I emigrated to Australia in 2001. Looking at this great video is a bit surreal really. I was 4 in 1969 so don't really recall much from around that time but I vaguely remember cars in Queens Square. Not a great deal has changed really except in Queens Square and where County Mall is now. All the local shops are much the same though. It is a shame that those of us that lived in the town through the 70's 80's and 90's didn't appreciate what a great place it was to live and grow up in. I went to Thomas Bennett and it was as mentioned in the film surrounded by huge green fields. Tilgate Park was on my doorstep as I lived in Holbein Road and Winchester Road Tilgate for many years but hardly ever went up there. I worked at Gatwick for BAA we where lucky to have the airport on our doorstep especially through the times of huge unemployment in the early 80's. I also had a great uncle who was mayor of Crawley Bill Buck. On top of that we had a middle-weight champion of the world in Alan Minter a night I will always remember when he beat Vito Antufermo in Las Vegas in 1980. In 2012 I came back for a visit and was a little shocked at what I found it had lost that lovely feeling the town used to have. Now here I am 12000 miles away in Perth Western Australia watching this video again still life moves on.

I lived in Crawley as a little kid from 1955 to 1970 in Ifield. Fun place to grow up back then and I spent hours playing in the Old manor before it was demolished (Deerswood Court now) Langley Lane and Ifield Village and out to Charlwood. However, Crawley itself was always ugly and then became a real dump in the mid 60's. Everything old and beautiful was demolished and apart from Goffs Park and Ifield Green absolutely nothing good is left. It must have been stunning before the new town was built but that basically ruined the place. I've heard its really bad these days and I'm not surprised, as it was always a dump!

Wow I remember those days so well, I moved out in 1986 and never looked back. Like so many towns, unrecognisable today....so sad.

Paul, congratulations on a great video and thanks for uploading. I have lived in Crawley since I was born in 1983. Crawley's been very good to me and I had a great time growing up. It's also on the doorstep of London, where I now work, and it's half an hour from Brighton.
My parents grew up here and I also used to be a reporter for the Crawley Observer. It's fascinating to see how it's changed.
It's changing all the time here so maybe another documentary is due!

That tree was cut down almost 10 years ago to build more shops! One of them being an Ann Summers shop lol!

I was one of the kids of a family, 4year old, that moved from London to Crawley....It was 1960, I left in 1978. My self and my family loved the place. The title "A place to grow" in retrospect should read A great place to grow..... now I don't know but then....fantastic.
Thanks so much for this film....yes film....
