[TAS] Beating Spyro without jumping

  • This is a TAS (Tool Assisted Superplay) that beats Spyro the Dragon without jumping. More precisely, the goal is to beat Gnasty Gnorc without using cheats (i.e. an any% run) while only ever pressing the X button to initiate a glide, or during cutscenes and in menus. This definition of jumping allows, among other jumplike mechanics, the use of supercharge autojumps (literally an automatic jump that can happen during supercharge) which can be seen for example during the High Caves supercharge. Don't @ me, I don't make the rules. Okay, I did make the rules, but that's besides the point.
    This is not supposed to be a highly optimized speedrun. It's more of a fun challenge run.

    That was truly impressive from start to finish. Alpine Ridge, Tree Tops and that wall glide around the pillar in Dream Weavers were probably my favourite parts of this run. Very nice work! :)

      Figuring out how to get up those stairs in Alpine Ridge was one of the most difficult parts in the whole run. The rest of the level was surprisingly easy, at least in comparison.

      Funny you should mention that particular point, because when I was doing this I was thinking the same thing. I didn't think I could get Maximos, the dragon up there. Originally I left Dry Canyon without getting him. I started doing Cliff Town, but then I actually counted how many dragons I could afford to skip. In order to get to Dream Weavers you can skip at most 8 dragons (if I remember correctly), and I had already skipped 5 in Artisans. So I really had no choice but to go back to Dry Canyon and try again, and I got all the dragons there and almost every single one after that point. So the place you mention was actually a big turning point me mentally. It went from "let's see if I can get these things" to "let's try our very best to get as much as we can", and I certainly wouldn't have finished the run with the former mindset.

      It's the same kind of flop that happens at 30:56, I just glide out of it before the flop animation starts so it looks like a quick jump.

    • @Peteguy100
      @Peteguy100  3 месяца назад

      The ones when rescuing dragons, entering portals, etc., are just for fun, they don't really offer any advantage for a TAS. Maybe you realized this already, but the TAS often uses rolls against things like sloped surfaces and fodder hitboxes to gain height. In those situations there's a functional purpose for the rolls, and there's a good chance this run wouldn't have been possible without rolling.

      When I started making this TAS I definitely wasn't convinced I could finish it, and it definitely came down to the wire in several spots. Thankfully the physics in this game are so interesting and just the perfect amount of broken.

    so dont play past gnasty gnorc becuase couldent without jump?

    • @Peteguy100
      @Peteguy100  11 месяцев назад

      I decided to make this any% because when I started working on this I didn't know if even that would be possible, and going for max% would've taken a lot more time. There's a lot more that could be collected, but I doubt 120% would ever be achieved. For example, with my current knowledge I can't imagine a way to get past the very beginning of Gnorc Cove.
