    So a lot of ppl still think we’re talking down on ALL ppl who pursue a stable/comfortable life. That’s NOT what we’re saying. It’s probably more specific to Asians in Western countries, but I know there are a lot of us who settle in life, who become boring, stagnant, apathetic and never step back to reflect how this could be hurting them. (Believe it or not, yes I’ve seen couples break up over this stuff.) So NO, we’re not saying stability is bad, just asking, what are you gonna do once you get it? Are you gonna get involved in a community? Are you gonna reignite a hobby you suppressed? Are you gonna support an indie production group by buying their series on Vimeo 😜 Thx for all the positive feedback. What was your favorite part of Ep 2? Ready for Ep 3 tomorrow?? #yappie

      pwangs Phil, people seriously feel like they're getting attacked for being Yappies? Lol You're not even criticizing safe/stable lifestyles. Rather encouraging people to seek balance in their lives instead. Too many ppl stick to what they're comfortable with and rarely branch out, mostly out of fear. Asian Americans as a whole, we lack voices in the community cos not enough of us get involved in matters that effect real change.

      Don't worry Phil. When some folks hit their 30's they'll soon realise that the last decade of doing things your parents' and culture's way can only get you so far, and that life is meant to be lived and humans are meant to grow. The catch? Growth happens outside the comfort zone. Loving this series and the dialogue it's encouraging. Keep doing what you do Wong-Fu. You guys are the bomb.

      Spot on!!! Too many of my Asian friends are soooo unhappy living the stable stagnant life. I wish they were true to themselves. We don't have to logic and have a stable life. It's okay to live a little. There's so many rewards when you become more fearless. Make mistakes!!! I personally do think it's bad to be stable if it's not true to what you want to be doing. I'll give up all my riches and life to help the poor and those suffering and that's something I realised a bit late because I was raised to fear being poor.

    This is seriously the first series on RUclips that I can literally see on something like Netflix or Hulu. The quality is incredible, the acting top notch. And as a black man, it's really interesting to see things from the perspective of another minority and seeing issues I never really had a way to see.

    There nothing wrong with being a yappie. The thing is that before RUclips and social media , everyone kinda view Asians in terms of social life, careers , etc as usually a working profession like engineering , tech , etc. or nothing but school. We were all bound to do this or that or because traditional minded family told us to do this so we can have a better successful life . The thing is as we get older and social media started to exist , we start to see Asians from a different view. We’re not the stereotypes you see in movies tv shows or what you think or learn from our friends. The moral of this series to show that you can be whatever you want. Not let stereotypes or old traditional thinking defy you or your life. Learn to take risks. If you want to be a yappie that’s fine nothing wrong with that. It’s just that there’s more options to making it as an asian in America then just doing things one way or the traditional way. Overall you decide the life you want. You decide who you want to be. You decide the happiness and success you live and not let anything or anyone dictate or defy your life. Its your life. BE WHO YOU ARE AND BE PROUD OF IT!

    • @VitaSoyHK
      @VitaSoyHK 5 лет назад +28

      They cover it more later in their eps but I totally agree I felt the same way! I think they mean more-so that you're comfortable and also very narrow view of what life is about and sticking too much to traditional Asian sensitivities regarding different aspects of life (work, social life, relationships, etc) without being open minded to what else the world has to offer. Stay tuned, you'll see!

    • @Evija3000
      @Evija3000 5 лет назад +20

      WhenItsHalfPastFive I hope they'll explore that more as well. So far it seems like the main negative aspect is one girl not wanting to be his gf... Although they did touch on the idea that being safe can mean abandoning possible passions or interests that don't align with that. Like how Phil abandoned dancing.

    • @enoch7564
      @enoch7564 5 лет назад +19

      Haven't seen the newer episodes yet, but I think it's not so much being comfortable and stable as it is trying to fit a stereotype at the expense of his own aspirations. Like in this episode how his friends were saying he has to like dim sum, or at least pretend to like it. If Phil didn't actually like dim sum, to other people it could seem like he is fake, and putting on a show just to meet expectations. You can probably see how this caused issues in his past relationships. In a serious relationship your partner can almost always tell if you're being genuine or not. If he acts like a yappie around his gfs, they probably could tell he wasn't being his true self.

    • @clambismable

      There's nothing wrong with being a yappie, I think Wongfu is trying to start more conversations about the nature of being a yappie more than anything else. I myself am one, but I recognize that many yappies have a certain characteristic of not caring about the issues that permeate our society and going along comfortably, obediently, and submissively in the face of crisis/issues that other groups go through. It's not a necessarily a criticism but definitely a message to push Asian-Americans to be more involved in American society and the issues that others still face.

      I guess from "phil" and these other stable, high income, family oriented, hard working asians life was too easy and comfortable for them. They dont bother to know what its like on the other end of the spectrum. A lot of americans, whites, blacks, hispanic strive to have what asian americans have that came easy for them through their parents hard work and investment. Theres nothing wrong with the premise of this series. If anythig it just shows Phils and other asian american like phil their insecurities. I think theres a huge difference between westcoast asians and east coast asians. I think eastcoast asians will not be able to relate much. eastcoast asians tends to just assimilate to the rest of americans and they dont stick with only asians. I wish that channels like wongfu would focus more on the possitive aspect of being asian and make skits about it. The whole victim mentality have been played out too much by other races. Itd be nice to take a different approach to get to the top using positivity

    • @sigerlion8608
      @sigerlion8608 5 лет назад +7

      @Mattijs You're right bruh. Girls that complain about "being safe", whatever the hell that means, aren't girls worth holding on to. Just be with them while they find you interesting and let them move on when they don't find you interesting anymore. They are just going to jump from one man to another once they find the current man "boring" anyway. The dim sum and dance class things are such minor "issues" that if relationships are predicated on those things then it's not even a solid relationship to begin with. Being with someone compatible should be the number one priority for both men and women. Unless both of you want to travel the world and bungee jump off every bridge you see, then if the woman isn't stable and wants to leave, then so be it. And vice versa.

      I had the same problem. I am not saying you can't be a thrill-seeker. You can't be adventurous. It's just NOT POSSIBLE to always sustain that. We don't live in societies like that. Andrew is being picked on and I find it unfair especially when Lana says "Intimacy wasn't our problem." Yes, she has all right to reject Andrew BUT it isn't his fault and I don't like her blaming it on him.

    To all the people complaining about the apparent criticism of living it "safe," I felt the same way at first too. But after thinking about it a bit, I thought my judgment to be a bit hasty. Perhaps the message isn't about the rejection of safety per se, but about Andrew's dissatisfaction with himself which he's not willing to admit. If Andrew liked "safe" and chose the "safe" route, it would have been a non-story. But he's not actually satisfied with his comfortable life (or perhaps he refuses to thoroughly evaluate his life), and yet at the same time he cannot bring himself to change it, and so he needs people to push him in that direction. His dialogue with Lana seems to indicate as much: Andrew's being upset by her assessment reveals more of a refusal to face his own desires, rather than a choice to embrace his decisions. As it stands, I'm still hopeful that the message isn't as simple at it first appears. Only later episodes will tell...

    • @bruinprideee9970
      @bruinprideee9970 5 лет назад +22

      exactly, totally agree! its important to have an open mind before such a hasty reaction to the series - a defense mechanism that is totally understandable to those who ARE enjoying the safe lifestyle. theres nothing wrong with either lifestyle. wongfu isnt trying to point out whats wrong or right. i believe theyre trying to address a certain population of asians who feel a dissatisfaction towards their secure, cushy lifestyle (something they've been lectured by their parents to attain since childhood) but want something more out of this life. maybe he needs a hobby; or maybe he needs to live an authentic life on his own terms

    • @Mangosrllysuck
      @Mangosrllysuck 5 лет назад +7

      I see this point, but I think the way in which it is made is what makes viewers uncomfortable. The fact that Andrew’s first date and Lana seem so critical of his character makes it seem more like external influences are what’s making him self conscious, rather than an internal realization. I think if the point was to show that there is an internal dissatisfaction, it could have been done in a more subtle, less attacking way. A way that brings Andrew to be more organically introspective instead of having people straight up attack his character, for no apparent reason other than “you’re too safe and that’s bad.”

    • @havu2236
      @havu2236 4 года назад +2

      The thing is he was comfortable with being safe but there was outside influence that said other wise. In sense he was force to think it differently. Your whole theory is out the window.

    Instead of constantly having people or girls in Andrew's life telling us and heavy handedly berating us that safe and yappies are bad, why not set it up as Andrew's starts to realize that he wants to pursue his other interests. I'm enjoying the series but the heavy handed approach of the girls in his life saying he is not desirable bc he is a "yappie" is quite frankly imo ridiculous

      "why not set it up as Andrew's starts to realize that he wants to pursue his other interests. "
      but isn't that's what's happening right now? he's realizing that he has a "safe and stable life" so that means that he actually has the freedom to do his other hobbies. next thing you know, you're part of many communities. I think them saying that a "Yappie" is boring, is just showing that they're safe but boring. Maybe he'll lose the yappie label once he finds stuff that he actually enjoys. and then later, Lana tries to get back with him, but then he's like "NOPE I got a nice new girlfriend, aka that dance instructor, who likes my new life balance of hobbies"

    • @ucsdsnsd4
      @ucsdsnsd4 5 лет назад +10

      Jenny Yao i didnt elaborate that part. But, what I meant is instead of girls rejecting him because of being "safe" there has to be another way where he can start to realize that he is not a "yappie" kind of person. IMO it's a bad message and inconsistent with acceptance because it gives the image of measuring self worth based on another person's perception of you.

    • @vincewong8854
      @vincewong8854 5 лет назад +13

      I mean you could realize it from a lot of different ways, but oftentimes you do take the opinions of people that you have feelings for more strongly than others. It's not so much that there's something wrong with him as he feels like there is something missing and the girl is the one who led him towards this avenue of self discovery.

    • @AyanamiRei5kyu
      @AyanamiRei5kyu 5 лет назад +7

      if it was only the first girl, it would be more believable that he was unhappy all along and she just helped him realize it or make him start thinking about it, but then his ex also points out the same things and he seems to disagree... i get the feeling that he doesn't see why it's wrong to be comfortable or safe and just lets those girls' opinions bother him into finally not being comfortable with his perfectly normal life style

      Wong Fu Productions Hi, ... thank you for the entertaiment... it's been a while since I've seen anything from Wonfu... but the rest of this series, I look forward to...
      As a 1.5 generation Korean guy, though, I want to say something about a societal issue as how I see it, if anyone's interested...
      It deals with an issue Wongfu has covered a few times but, I take it from a slightly different perspective.
      Take this with a Bit of Humor, but...
      ... living in LA, I sometimes forget that, "Not all Asians are created equally..." --a long time quote.
      When I was a kid, my parents taught me to correct people if they thought I was Chinese... because they wanted me to be aware of the different Asian groups, and their cultures...
      But today in LA, there's a Problem of Bunching All Asians as one group. I say "Problem" because there's a disgusting problem going on.. regarding Asian group misrepresentation when it comes to yellow fever or white-worshipping...
      A person from Thailand, with all of its wonderful culture, shouldn't be confused with someone from Japan with its own wonderful culture... just saying.
      Societal problems in our community are complex and concern stuff that go beyond just..
      ... whether or not we're being properly represented on the BIG SCREEN, although that's important too, I guess...
      I may sound like an ignorant asshole but in LA, one real issue concerns little 'southern asian ' girls with the excessive giggling (usually from: Thailand, Taiwan, or sometimes Vietnam).
      They as a group are currently, in my opinion, the BIGGEST white-worshippers, for some strange reason...
      And, They try to Bunch all Asian girls (Korean, Japanese, Northern Chinese, etc.) into One -- "all Asian girls group...
      This becomes advertisement because we all know that These People aren't Quiet-- both vocally and unfortunately visually as well, for some strange reason again...
      but, that's just my humble opinion...
      Most Asian girls I know Are Not Like This, I'll add...
      Although They're the Minority, it sometimes doesn't seem that way because of this reason.
      I now personally say-- go for Mexican girls too; they're more down to earth and less up-in-the-air, it seems...
      Plus, you don't have to try to Guess If She's Retarded... -- just kidding..
      Finally, to the little South Asian girls (by my definition above), Sorry to burst your bubble but,
      Please See: RUclips
      "ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY"
      (minute 34: 08).
      ... if you don't have two minutes to invest right now, basically...
      This normal German or British guy
      (they don't say what but he's there naked for educational purposes, I guess)
      really stands infront of class with the smallest, narrowest dic on the planet (erect or flaccid). END OF STORY.
      Finally, I'll include this part because it sounds funny to me...
      ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER than repeated words or survey done by goofy, insecure, dead guys...
      It's 2018, just upload your little dic up here ON RUclips for educational purposes next time, instead of trying to survey other people-- you BETA piece of shits...
      Haha. --just kidding...
      OG. Source: RUclips
      "ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN BODY"
      (minute 34: 08).
      Educational video.
      --please like my post if you're still here... thank you. KC.

      There is not way too win. Either you will be too traditional or you will be too American so give up. I was at a meetup and it was a diverse group. Non Asians like myself and Asian Americans from different ethniciities. The funny thing is that Asian Americans make as many assumptions as white Americans about other Asian people. We were singing karaoke at the meetup and one of the young ladies who is of Japanese Korean descent asked one of the men who is Chinese American did he know any Chinese song and he looked her and told her I grew up in Iowa with all white people. I looked at him and said rock and roll. He said yes. Some of the stuff I've heard would be offensive if myself or another white person said it but usually it is rather funny.

    This series is really opening my eyes on the perspectives and challenges Asian American millennials and and gen z are facing. With the help of social media they're able to see different perspectives and paths to take rather than the safe routes the older generation of Asian Americans were "forced" to take, aka the safe route. I would question young Asian Americans not wanting to aim for a high paying job and nice cars or houses, who'd rather go for questionable, uncertain career paths. Now I realize that I'm a Yappie ignorant to the fact that I wasn't given a chance or choice to find a cultural identity; I was raised to pursue the "American Dream" and have a nice job, car, house, and family and hadn't taken into account that I never had a choice in the matter. Although I'm thankful for the path I was raised to take and really enjoy my life, I now see how lucky, yet challenging, the younger generation of Asian Americans have it and wish them all the best in the choices that make them happy.

    What exactly are these women doing to be "not safe"? There are people struggling around the world in poverty whose goal is to attain that level of safety. Idk, looking down on safety just seems like an affectation, nothing more. And their solution is invariably something art related.

    Not super sure what to feel about the message I'm getting from the series thus far. I like it, it's a well made show, no doubt. But I feel like living a "safe" and "comfortable" life, essentially chasing the nuclear family ideal, is being cast in a negative light here. I dunno, I feel like that's a mentally that comes from a place of privilege. As someone who didn't grow up in financially stable conditions, I don't personally see anything wrong with that, so just the way certain characters speak bothers me on a weirdly personal level haha. Though I do like the spin of chasing your dreams rather than being pushed into something you don't want to do.

      Siorus thx for your thoughtful comment. It’s definitely something we hope to address in later episodes!

      I think it's more like, in the past, Asians have always been known for playing it safe. Like study hard and become a doctor/engineer/lawyer/pharmacist/etc. Make friends with the goody two-shoe white kids. Don't listen to "black people" music. Asian kids used to never be encouraged to do anything artsy/creative because it wasn't a "respectable" career.
      There's absolutely nothing wrong with being "comfortable". I mean, people would kill for financial stability lol It's more addressing the kind of Asians that grew up feeling like they had no other choice but to do whatever their parents wanted, without even considering what they wanted. Like they never even thought about what they would like to do - they just did everything to please their parents, and their only life goal was to make their parents proud without ever questioning anything.

      I think as a non Asian person who is well off. I’ve actually been finding a lot to relate too. 6 figures and being comfortable was always the life I wanted to attain, and now, everything seems so plain and boring. I’m really excited to see how this all plays out

      I'm Hispanic, so I admit I can't relate to the perspective being given here, but it's just one of those things that sits oddly with me. I just feel that the way certain characters speaking about being "safe and comfortable" comes from a place of financial privilege that in my youth I would have given anything to have. I'm not just talking about financially unstable but straight up "we lived below the poverty line 10 months out of every year". I don't wanna judge the series just yet because it's an incomplete narrative right now but just based on the first two episodes, there's this sense of "yeah that kinda sucks to hear" when a lot of characters speak and honestly kinda makes me feel bad. (which I know isn't the intent, so that's more this series hitting me personally)
      I don't think chasing your dreams and living a comfortable life are mutually exclusive, often times the latter makes the former an easier risk to take. I guess it's just the disdain I hear in what many of the characters say. I could also just be 100% projecting here haha I've been a fan of Wong Fu since 2005 or so and I totally trust them to at least have the message make sense within its own narrative, even if it's not something I completely see eye to eye with.

      I definitely agree.Who doesn’t want to have a stable career? You know how many homeless people or people who are looking for jobs and are desperate to take your job? This video is representing Asians as so spoiled to think a stable life is not the route that you should choose. You would rather be stable than end up with something unstable which then leads you to have a financial burden.

    Okay, so I got into Wong Fu like a good 3 yrs. ago and I was very consistent with their content but so many things have been happening during those years and recently, that I haven't watched them in a while and this series popped up on my feed and it's currently 2 in the morning I am watching it and during the scenes where Phil is dancing I was literally listening to the music and remembered when I was 3 years younger and watching them and wondering how life was/is going to be like and knowing what has happened to me now I'm like holy crap I could have lost hope any of those times that I was going through something but because of all the RUclipsrs that I watch they really do put more motivation into me then anyone else I'm close to, really, so I just want to say thank you so much Wong Fu Productions for being there whenever I thought nobody was. ❤
