    Since this was from a "normal" news channel I am pleasantly surprised to hear about an actually interesting development in an area.

    What about using the waste steam to desalinate gravity fed ocean water that could also restore the Salton Sea astride the geothermal power plants?

    How much fresh water is required to extract lithium and provide geothermal energy?

      @solar3001 2 года назад +1

      None in the case of the Salton sea. These oil and gas companies are using the same technology to drill down to super heated brine in the earth’s crust to Capture heat energy and use that to then refine that brine
      Refine the brine!

    If I was younger, I would be out there digging right now! This place isn't suitable for anything but mining. And this is a world-class lithium deposit for mining. Get some!

    Sounds like the salton sea was destroyed on purpose

    • @foobarmaximus3506
      @foobarmaximus3506 2 года назад

      No one destroyed it. It was never intended to be a "sea" anyway. Nature made this place a desert, and that's what it has always been. Reality.

      @@foobarmaximus3506 It was a sea before. Going up to a much higher elevation and you see the markings of an ancient ocean that was there before. It would flood and dry out over time, although this time, man made the flood and created the sea over a hundred years ago.

    Lithium has been successfully extracted there and purified to best-in-world quality in the Demonstration plant I ran in Calipatria and Brawley. Pallets worth. Batteries and components will never be made in California due to the ridiculous taxes and regulatory environment.

      Maybe you like your kids developing cancer. Electronics manufacturing and mining for example create toxic waste and companies can purposely go into bankruptcy to avoid clean up costs. Libertarian-ism is all cute until it's your kids getting cancer or your well water that's contaminated. Ask Butte Montana how much they love the toxic acidic lake bordering their city. Hypocrisy is an American tradition.

      @@zeitgeistx5239 Please toss your precious cell phone and HDTV and your car's dashboard, along with all the battery powered vehicles in the trash. You are a complete and total hypocrite. Industry is not the the problem, the snotty consumer is! You sound young and anticapitalistic. Try "rolling down" your car window like everyone did years ago, and let's go back to slide rules. Companies do not purposely go into bankruptcy to avoid "cleanup costs". How naive.

    The process of mining will pump cleaner water back into the sea. These companies will have to make a contract with the state to help fund the restoration because they'll be intertwined. It's inevitable that they will work together I read.

    • @JerryVolkin
      @JerryVolkin 2 года назад +1

      You are completely incorrect. 100%. The process of extracting lithium from geothermal brine does not involve the Salton Sea. Not at all. The lithium extraction unit is part of the terminus of the steam extraction and power generation plant. The used brine had a proprietary system to remove the lithium. After use, it is pumped back down in wells to the geothermal layer. With no connection to the Mistake Lake there is no responsibility for any involvement, legal or moral

    The salton sea won't be "fixed" the less water the more lithium plants can be built. So manufacturing plants, more workers which means more people and more pollution... Big business so the rich get richer.

    • @Juneisthebestmonth
      @Juneisthebestmonth 2 года назад +6

      You are completely incorrect and as an anti-capitalist, I expected nothing more. Lithium plants are not stand-alone chemical plants - they are inside a geothermal plant. Neither plant has anything to do with the Salton Sump Pit, they do not use anything, nor discharge anything to or from the lake and are non-polluting. And besides, you need lithium carbonate for your cell phone and laptop. Secondly, we need the rich to get richer so they can employ you and those other workers. So don't knock it.
