The respect General Moore has for Command Sergeant Major Plumbly shows just how much of an incredible soldier and man he was. America is truly blessed to have men such as these.

These two glory hogs got allot of men killed. I was with the same unit only in 69-70. I never remember a sergeant major or battalion commander being in a firefight. We lost allot of good men in Cambodia in 70, one didn’t come back, he’s still there. Most were draftees, What a waste and glorified these men??????

Both Moore and Plumley understood, and instilled in the troops under them, that one must lead from the front. Don't order your men to do what you either can't or won't do yourself. Also, their chain of command was near unbreakable. Each man knew the job of the man above and below him, that way, even if they took casualties in the Sr NCO ranks there was still a Jr NCO that could do the job. Both Moore and Plumley are bona fide heroes and leaders in my books.

Tyler Schutz you don’t offen see a four star general stand up and move out of his way for an NCO.
But I guess they do if the sergeant has cold combat wings on his uniform and did his tours in WWII, korea as well as Vietnam.

I had a BN commander in the US Army in Berlin who got a battlefield commission in Vietnam he was a excellent commander and I learned that from my BN CSM the our BN commander had served under Hal Moore as his aid when he was a 1st Lt thus it explained everything to me he retired as a O6 35 years later we still talk and he's just as humbled as he was then he has 3 silver stars and 3or 4 tours in Vietnam as an enlisted E-6 to his battlefield commission. He was a old paratrooper from the 101st Airborne Division before Vietnam and during.

In the first North Vietnamese Army-U.S. Army formal battle encounter, then LTC Hal Moore, at Ia Drang, was outgunned and outmanned. He held his command, the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) together. They survived a horrific fight. Moore was first off the lead helicopter and the last soldier to leave the battlefield three days later. He later said about soldiers,” “spend time with your soldiers. Talk with them. Never ever abuse them by act of omission. They are the secret to successful command on or off the battlefield.”
It was known those years after he would visit the graves of those that fell at Ia Drang and he did it quietly with no fanfare.
LTG Hal Moore was an extraordinary soldier in the way; he carried himself after he left the service. He was involved in a ski
resort and didn’t become a talking head.
“Hate war, love the American warrior.” -LTG Moore
From the soundtrack of We Were Soldiers “Mansion of the Lord “
To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord
No more bleeding, no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
    Just divine embrace, Eternal light
In the Mansions of the Lord
Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard though the angels sleep
All through the ages safely keep
    The Mansions of the Lord
    LUX AETERNA
Let perpetual light shine upon Hal Moore, O Lord,
    with your saints forever,
    for you are merciful.
Grant him eternal rest, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
    AMEN

During the Battle of the Ia Drang, SP/4 Willard Parrish using an M60 MG killed over 100 NVA regular soldiers in the ATTACK! He saved Moore's whole battalion from being attacked from the rear, his supply and medical area from being wiped out and his own command group. In effect Parrish SAVED Moore's whole battalion from being destroyed. Parrish killed more NVA and CHANGED THE COURSE OF THE BATTLE IN OUR FAVOR than the three Medal of Honor winners combined from that fight. He was given a Silver Star.

In Col Moore's book We Were Soldiers Once and Young, there are endless fights like that described. I believe Col Moore said the tough part was that for every commendation that was handed out, there was just as many, likely more acts of heroism and bravery in which no witnesses lived to write the commendations. The loss of life in Vietnam is hard to fathom.

These are real men....real men. They fought and did not hesitate to do their duty. Learned men, studious men, political men start and attempt to direct wars...but men like this do the heavy lifting so that others may live. We owe them a debt that we can never repay. So stow your complaints. Forget your arguments and let them speak. For you may learn something that will make you a man.

Many times I saw our First Sergeant yell at our Company Commander, and the Captain would just stand there and take it. First Sergeant seen combat, the Captain didn't.. you don't mess with them let alone a Sergeant Major.

The General give some good advice to young officers about NCO's here. It's a shame that smugness and arrogance have taken the place of intelligence, honor and respect in the O corps these days. They don't make them like these two guys anymore.

Young officers, especially 2nd Lts, listening to senior enlisted likely be the difference between a long career, and a short eventful one.
Loved the story in Gen. Schwarkof's bio ' Doesn't Take A Hero ', where as a new officer, under fire first time in Vietnam, he panicked & ran into his first Sargent, and knocked himself out.

The picture of a pure soldier both these men are. Most Americans have zero clue the bond they have and just would never understand.
A bond is formed when ya train together, but a different bond is formed when you enter combat, live it, feel it and survive it while losing some.
God Bless both of these gentlemen, those who are like them and those who will become like them.

I couldn`t agree more Niel as a Brit it is comforting to know that we have men of this standard at our sides. My Father served in The Merchant Navy during The War, he Took part in The North Atlantic Convoys going up to Murmansk and Archangel in Russia and he would turn in his Grave if he could see the state our country is in Today. God Bless these fine Men of Honour and Values 🙏.

@ xzqzq......If the Army is consistent w/the Corps, every hash mark = 4 years. What's minimally visible to me indicates @ least 40 years. 10 stripes = 40, though as much as 3+ more years as well, before an another stripe. I might've missed a hash mark too.

We still have men like those, and you monstrously insult the Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Airmen who are deployed in combat theaters NOW. How DARE you imply we don't have such today? Read some Medal of Honor citations from (for example) Afghanistan then rethink your shitbag attitude! Ditto the muppets who clicked "like".
