  • Southampton Mount pleasant level crossing,new barriers,4 alarms,4 wigwags,4 barriers, and a highly active crossing. Southampton was playing at home, so there was a lot of traffic and pedestrians, which obviously resolved in misuse for some enjoy

    I remember visiting this crossing back in November - it was definitely due some sort of renewal because the bells only rang once at the start of the sequence, which took a number of pedestrians by surprise and was potentially dangerous. Perhaps someone DID get hurt between then and now which warranted the renewal? Who knows. Anyway, good spot!

    idk what the old crossing was like but this looks pretty good and secure. im surprised by how long the barriers are down prior to the first train. here in the USA its usually around 30 seconds depending on what equipment is there. neat that tney have people actually looking at the crossing and physically controlling it tho.

      At this crossing it used to be down to the discretion of the gate controller and safety precautions at the time but with the City's main station just down the line it is a very busy crossing.

    The real question: Can it clear any trucks and cars that intentionally stop on the rail lines?
    I've seen so many videos where a car will intentionally ignore the warning of the train come, stop on the track, leave the car, and watch their wheels be turned into scrap. Same with trucks, they crest a slight hill and get stuck. Same outcome.

    The crossing was closed nearly 120 seconds before the first train is driving through. What is this? The title said it's a new crossing!!! Last summer in my area was one of the last one rebuild who a guy was closing and opening the barrier by hand. Nothing changed noticeable. The barrier is closed 20 seconds before and opened when the train is 10 meters away.
    This one is an utterly joke.

    • @levelcrossingtraveller
      @levelcrossingtraveller  Месяц назад +5

      This is controlled by CCTV in Eastliegh, and they judge how long to put the barriers down. The monitors they use the ones in Havant automatically come on, then they drop the crossing, and it needs to be cleared before the trains come so it's running on green signals. Actually, they are supposed to have the barriers down for at least 5 minutes before the train comes. They are a good team in Havant. I'm not sure about Eastleigh Havant being there, but they do deal with a lot of stuff you know. When I mean "New" I mean new barriers it says it clearly byw

    I don't know if this is the US or the be UK, but we should have had this kind of grade crossing years ago. The stupid ones we have in the he US car drivers can zig zag through the crossing when the gates are down. These gates block it entirely so there will be fewer train/auto crashes. Dumb Americans love to try to "beat the train" with the car being on the losing end and an engineer/driver messed up for the rest of his life because he knows that he killed someone. You cannot stop a train for a mile.....it's to heavy, so it can't stop any faster.

    It makes no sense why your crossings activate so early. Why is that? In North America they only come down 40 seconds prior to a train entering the road

    • @levelcrossingtraveller
      @levelcrossingtraveller  Месяц назад +4

      Ok, good question. A lot of people assume they are automatic, and now some of them are but only the ones with 2 half barriers that cover half the road and pedestrian ones with 2 lights Red and Green light. Now the crossings have different varieties. This one with 4x barriers is controlled by a signalling team not to far away from here . They operate it but different buttons to Lower,Stop,crossing clear,raise the crossing so stop is to hang the barriers if they are obstructed and crossing clear they have to have it cleared before the train comes through it's very complex in there so they have a signal box or a signalling centre with is more common nowadays. I believe american ones are sensored, that's why not to sure

    • @TonyVRailfanning
      @TonyVRailfanning Месяц назад +1

      @ wow I am very surprised that all of your crossings are not already censored and electronic it would make things a lotbetter. You are correct, all crossings are automatically lowered by sensors on the rails. Many even detect the speed of the train so they lower depending on the speed and distance from the crossing

    • @keystonedriving8180
      @keystonedriving8180 Месяц назад +9

      If you compare the crossing safety statistics for the UK and the US, ours are rather better. If you add in the fact that UK trains are moving rather faster, a longer time makes sense.
      Recently at Pecos in Texas and abnormal load with full escort, including police, was stuck on the crossing for 45 minutes and nobody told the railroad. Result was that 2 railroaders died. That was a lesson we learned in 1968 at Hixon. It's a lesson which the US has been unwilling to learn.
      If road users were less inclined to ignore closing or closed barriers there might be a case for shorter lowering times, but don't hold your breath for that to happen.

    • @DavidShepheard
      @DavidShepheard Месяц назад +7

      Can a train in the USA come to a full stop in 40 seconds? Probably not.
      I believe that level crossings in the UK are connected to signal blocks. In the UK we have signals and between each signal and the next there is a track circuit which gets shorted out when a train is in that signal block. That short circuit makes the signal behind the train go red.
      If you set up a railway as a metro system, and give it a 30 mile per hour line speed, the signalling can be set up for 30 mile per hour trains and the signal blocks leading up to a level crossing would activate when an approaching train is coming and protect the train from crashing into a vehicle. But if you have the line signalled to 60 mph, 90 mph or even 125 mph, for semi-fast trains or InterCity trains, the signal blocks need to be further apart to protect an express train from crashing into the back of a stopping service. (In some parts of the UK, where stopping services and express trains share the same mainline, we get one InterCity train per hour and one stopping service. While on the Victoria Line in Central London, they are able to run trains 90 seconds apart from each other, because all the trains are metro trains and the signal blocks are fairly small.)
      That crossing had SWR trains and Southern Trains, which take commuters from the counties around London into London (so semi-fast) and it also had an Avanti train (that's an InterCity train). There were four tracks. That might be an indication that two tracks are used by stopping services and the other two are used by express trains or semi-fast trains in fast mode. So if the different tracks have different line speeds, the signal blocks might be different, in order to give full protection to train passengers on the InterCity services. And, if you put a slow train onto a track signalled for express trains, it's going to enter the signal block that tells the crossing to close at the same distance from the crossing, but approach the crossing more slowly.
      The best thing to do with level crossings is get rid of them. Statistically, level crossings kill people and local planning departments should work with railway companies to approve a plan that reroutes the road traffic.
      In a city, where there are alternative roads, a small footbridge or a small tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists can turn the areas on both sides of the railway into low traffic neigbourhoods and get rid of the through traffic. In the countryside, a "bypass" with a bridge can allow a crossing to close. In a small town or villiage that has been built up around a level crossing, with no undeveloped land to allow for a roadbridge, things get a bit more tricky.
