  • Welcome to my review of this beautiful Squier Classic Vibe '60s Stratocaster in Lake Placid Blue. I absolutely love this guitar and think it competes with Stratocasters multiple times its price.
I wanted to note that the clean samples for the blind test are played through a Fender Bassbreaker 007 head and 1x12 cabinet, and for the overdrive samples I turned on a Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive pedal. The samples were recorded with a Shure SM57 microphone with a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface.

Thanks for the review. I walked into my local music store other day and played the Vintera lake placid along with the classic vibe lake placid. I walked out with the classic vibe. What I noticed with the Vintera was Pau fero looked dry and faded and worst of all felt dry under the fingers. The classic vibe Indian laurel looks dark and feels much smoother. I’ve replaced the trem block to solid steel but outside of that I couldn’t believe how good it is built. My other strats are a 90s 57 Avri and 2018, 64 custom shop. The classic vibe will sit proudly along side them.

I agree, the Indian laurel looks and feels much more like rosewood to the point I wonder why they even use Pau ferro on the more expensive Fenders. I've continued to love the Classic Vibe and I'm interested in looking at some of the others in the range, too.

@@jonathancalhoun4853 If Pau Ferro was good enough for Stevie Ray Vaughan, it sure as hell is good enough for me.

@@milankotevski1663 Stevie actually never played on pau ferro fretboards. His most famous two strats were maple and rosewood. He also used Ebony. Unfortunately he passed away before his reissue strat came out. The srv reissue used pau ferro but the first run including the demo models used rosewood. One of his wishes with Fender was to keep costs down and make it an affordable guitar, kudos to him. Pau ferro is a good wood for guitars and those srv reissue look great. My only concern with the Vintera series is the dry look but mainly the feel of the dryness under the fingers. Rumour is Fender are reverting back to rosewood for the MIM reissues anyway.

Got a 60s Squier CV Strat, tobacco sunburst, tortoise guard, cream buttons about 2011...
Such a sweet instrument, best fit of of all worlds for the price......leave the expensive guitars home on gigs.

Well I got it wrong... I guessed guitar A was the American due to the fatter fuller sound. But I also felt it lacked a bit in clarity which gave me a little bit of doubt but I still ultimately stuck with it and went with guitar A being the American Standard. I felt like guitar B was a bit more crisp and articulate but also had that bite to it that you described which to my ear made it sound a bit too harsh and thin, at least on those very simple and raw tracks. I know that bite is characteristic of a Strat tone but I just didn't find it to sound that great here. It would probably sound better in a mix. If you look at solely just tone I think it's hard to say one is better than the other. The real difference is the craftsmanship, and the quality of components used. The Standard will just feel much better in the hands, feel better to play, and last many years longer than the Squier.

Definitely does sound killer now, the pickups, new 10-gauge strings and a nice setup took it to the next level!
What really surprised me is that with the new pickups, every one of the 5 positions has it's own, really distinct sound, which didnt feel like the stock pickups had.

Yep, waiting for Black Friday deals and pulling the trigger on either the lake placid blue, or whatever Sweetwater does as a only at Sweetwater like they did last year.
