- The Dutch Waffen-SS volunteers that served in Regiment Westland (Standarte Westland) of the Wiking Division did commit war crimes on the Eastern Front. They were involved in the Lviv Pogrom and took part in massacres of Jews and partisans during Operation Barbarossa in Ukraine. They sometimes worked with the Einsatzgruppen and Ukrainian collaborators. Then there was also the Dutch Volunteer Legion (Vrijwilligerslegioen Nederland) and Landstorm Nederland.

Difficult subject when it involves your own countrymen, you delivered the facts as always. It comes across as they were trying to prove themselves to the Germans by taking the extra step. Thank you for sharing.

Peer pressure can lead you down some awful paths. First you start smoking in the school bathroom. And then before you know it you're rounding up a village into a church that you and your palls set on fire. Parents should talk to their kids about peer pressure and the dangers of joining Vrijwilligerslegioen Nederland 4th SS Panzer Grenadier Brigade.
I think this one is especially difficult because it’s almost unspoken of in the Netherlands, it’s ignored out of shame. While the veterans of neighboring countries such as the Belgians speak a lot more open and honest on this subject.
Anyone with any knowledge of the Wiking or even Barbarossa in general knows Jan Femer (the veteran shown in this video) is totally lying; just follow the path of the division and you know what these soldiers at least saw...
Why is it shocking? We're all human, so we all have these behavioral things.

It's surreal to me how much in depth historical content is out there on youtube nowadays. For the record, my father, a conscripted member of the Wehrmacht, 6th Army, was part of the what I call the road to Stalingrad. My father was neither a bullshitter or a liar. ( He also told me how he had taken a Soviet prisoner in a barn of a town the Germans had recaptured. He found a Soviet soldier his age, who kept saying Pan, Pan, to my father. He thought the soldier was hungry. He had no rations other than chocolate, which he gave to his prisoner. He took the Soviet soldier to his commanding officer to hand over as a POW. He was told, We don't take Russian prisoners, you know what to do. My father walked away. He heard a shot as he walked. He was not 'punished' for disobeying an order, and he - like one of the Dutch volunteers mentioned in this program - mentioned that after they had retaken villages where they had been forced to retreat, they came across German soldiers hanging upside down from trees, fires beneath them, their testicles and penis cut out and stuffed into the dead soldiers' mouths. He said, We found it hard to not take Soviet prisoners after that.
He survived simply because he was shot in the head in Kharkov, flown back to Leipzig to recover, then sent to Bordeaux and Chieti in Italy in 1944 as the Wehrmacht retreated. He deserted, not because he was afraid, but because he had had enough of what he called bullshit. He said numerous times, as per the Dutch Volunteer interview at around about 13 minutes into this program, that frontline soldiers had no contact with Jewish populations, that they fought the Soviets and the crimes against Jews was committed by the Nazi Groups which followed them, whatever you want to call them - they were the true criminals and mass murderers - and that in his time in Russia and Ukraine he did not witness any atrocities against Jewish populations. Like I say, he fully acknowledges that these crimes were committed but that the German Army he fought in was NOT involved in killing Jews. In fact, he told me once that when was stationed in Bordeaux, a farmer complained that a German soldier had stolen one of his chickens. The soldier was found, tried and was condemned to be shot. The farmer complained that he did not want the boy who stole his chicken to be shot, all he wanted was to be compensated for the loss of his chicken. A new Commanding Officer had, in the meantime, taken over, and he interviewed the 18 year old German soldier and asked him why he had stolen the farmer's chicken. The soldier replied, I was hungry: we are always hungry. The new commanding officer compensated the farmer and increased the rations of his soldiers. My father said, That was the German Army I fought in....

In 2016 ive been in Brody Ukraine, there is a Synagoge in ruins, untouched after it was raided by the Nazi's in WW2. It was very impressive to see the ruins. The pain and suffering was still breathing from the stones.

Stefan.You and Mark Felton have really opened the "Stone age image" of Europe at that time when I was a young boy in England. I've always believed the Dutch had a "Snow White " image, the only 'misdemeanor' was the capture of Ann Frank! How nieve of me!!!. Very interesting. Crazy time for sure. If asked now, most people would "swear" that they would "never" get swept up in such inhuman treatment of others. Many people are afraid of truth and history, those would be the people who would down vote this. I feel badly for them.
daniel boyd cooper could also simply be denying reality because it conflicts with their beliefs. Here in the US we have people that still deny that the main cause for our civil war was slavery, many also like to whitewash or outright ignore crimes against the native americans and just how vicious discrimination against racial, and religious minorities could get at times. Than again here in America our sense of national ego is extremely over inflated, it even has the official term American exceptionlism. And simply pointing out how our countries has done horrible things in the past and even today is enough for you to be labeled as unpatriotic or anti American. Nationalists doesn't care about the truth, the only care about the image of their country they've created in their own heads.

Sure War is Hell but the Eastern Front had no rules because Hitler declared it to have no rules. Compare WWII Eastern Front with WWI Eastern Front. Yes you had the occasional war crime in WWI but not the wholesale slaughter that WWII had there which was declared by Hitler to be a race war.

Here are some facts I uncovered in my own research into Fascist Europe: Nazism in Germany had a left and right wing,by which I mean that all Nazis did NOT think alike. The SS,for instance was drawn from the upper classes (sons of doctors,dental students,etc.) and was more conservative and racial than other units of the Party. The SA,or Brownshirts were just the opposite;mostly they were from the lower or working- class (unemployed ex-soldiers,handymen and cab drivers,etc.) and were mostly about socialism and camaraderie and serving the state. I have not found too much emphasis on race once you get away from the SS,although anti-semitism was common amongst all. Also,Hitler's Mein Kampf was NOT "the bible of national socialism" as is often said. According to "Hitler's Tabletalk",which is a collection of his off-the-record comments, Hitler himself later dismissed the book as "so many prison fantasies". The REAL bible of Nazism was a book most of the world has never seen; the OrganisationbuchderNSDAP or Nazi Party Handbook. This was published yearly from the mid-30s onward,and was given to all new party members. It was a massive book,600 pages or more,filled with color illustrations of uniforms,medals and weapons,and contained EVERYTHING new Nazis needed to know. Party history and philosophy,organization, advice to newcomers on proper deportment ("Stormtroopers are not to be seen pushing baby strollers or walking arm-in-arm with one's lady friend",etc.), how to deal with disciplinary problems, when and how to wear your dress dagger,etc. Unfortunately most copies of the handbook were destroyed in huge bonfires by the U.SArmy in 1945,but some remain. Most people would be surprised at the contents,as it does NOT emphasize race,but instead talks about "community need before private greed",comradeship with the people,and generally socialist stuff more than anything else. It also says,"there is no such thing as pure German blood. Germans have always married and mixed freely with the peoples around them." I hope SOMEBODY does an English translation of this book!

yes, indeed race was randomly ever mentioned. most of modern assumptions are well agreed upon but questionable at best. yes Hitler spoke of Jews, but he associated them with communism and degeneracy. never once I've read any source material that would be focused on races. Also what is interesting to point out, most modern west wast quite antisemitic. USArmy didn't want to accept Jewish into officer academies, Eisenhower was partially Jewish and his review officer in academy was commenting in his report that even tho hes not bad his "jewish" origin shows up (what he meant I don't know). Pogroms of Jews were carried before 1939 in Poland and eastern Europe too. in america Henry Ford wrote anti jewish book, as well in UK a lot of aristocracy and politicians were openly antisemitic including Churchill

I can't imagine how hard it must have been for you to prepare this video. Thank you so much for your courage in revealing the crimes of your fellow countrymen. So many Jews were murdered as reprisal for the Lvov NKVD massacre - a horrible chapter in human history - for which Jews suffered in revenge for this tragedy.

In this context I would like to refer to the book by Hendrik C. Verton "Im Feuer der Ostfront" Nation Europa Verlag, Coburg 2003 ISBN 3-920677-61-7. The author served as a Dutch volunteer in the Waffen SS at the age of 21. He describes his anti-communist intentions, his training with other northern European volunteers in Sennheim as well as his missions in Russia and Poland, and later as a highly decorated 22-year-old non-commissioned officer (Unterscharführer) in the final battle for Breslau.The post-war period in Holland, with the reprisals against his family and the relatives of other Dutchmen who fought for Germany, occupies a large space. The book ends with the remark that to this day (in 2001) the Dutch do not want to admit that far more Dutch volunteers wore the uniform of Germany than the khaki of the Allies. Of course, this is a tendentious book from a "specialised publisher" but it does at least partially allow for a change of perspective. It does not report on war crimes, but it does describe the SS's treatment of partisans.

Ehm... there's plenty of videos and books written about that topic. The statement that both sides committed war crimes and thus were equally as bad is false. The Axis committed far more war crimes than the Allies, which doesn't mean the Allies were all clean though.

There ar also evidence of canadian war crimes against german waffen ss members in caen. The majority are unknown to the general public that it why i suggested that on a clearly historical information

These Dutch SS got off lightly if they returned home. Only a couple of years in jail at most. I’m surprised more movies haven’t been made about non German SS units. I mentioned the Dutch SS to a Dutch born friend of mine and he didn’t realise they existed.

By no means is it meant to be a mitigating factor, but it is important to remember that the Dutch volunteers of Westland in 1941, for the most part ended up as landfill in Russia over the following 3 years. The casualty lists for every unit on the Eastern Front were heavy, and many SS volunteers ended up facing capital punishment in Russia in the most brutal way possible. The other important factor is the overwhelming evidence that numerous Wehrmacht units also participated in widespread massacre of innocent civilians. It was not solely a Waffen SS crime as many would try to have you believe.

Very informative, thank you. We are busy digging into our family's history and looks like large part of family were NSB, and more Nazi supporters than Mussert supporters. Also looks like at least one volunteered and ended up with Dutch SS legion. Very interesting, yet shocking. But that's history and we must learn.

My mother's brother, bored stiff while living in a household with feisty women, actually considered joining the Germans, but my grandfather made it clear that was not going to happen. Probably saved his life.
Hopefully your family learned something about it and is nowadays against QR codez and mandated vaccin injections, thats all what counts now.

Thank you for telling this dark episode of WW2. It takes a lot of honesty and courage to do it. I am not a fan of Communism and It is true that it caused much suffering to many people. Still, it never preached the extermination of entire nations (Jews, but also most of the Slavs, Roma = Gypsies, etc.) and handicapped people, unlike Nazism. WW2 involved many nations, and all of them had their heroes and their zeroes. For me, Dutch anti-Nazi resistance and Dutch POWs and civilians who suffered from the brutality of the Japanese Imperial Army definitely rank high in the first group. The Dutch Waffen-SS do not belong to the same category... This is only my opinion, I don't intend to offend anybody.

I would like to point out that legends about Hitlers plan to eradicate Slavic people have no evidence whatsoever part from one, I mean ONE person, double traitor Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski. he told story as witness on trial about a meeting of SS echelon with Himmler, where Himmler allegedly stated this plan in detail. Unfortunately this is only proof of anything like that. Interestingly on the day that top echcelon of SS meeting took place, Himmler was in Posen which is well documented, but tribunal ignored it, historians mostly too, and this version of history is fed now, fairy tale about how Hitler wanted to eliminate Slavic people

Well done. It is hard to reconcile all the conflicting evidence. This is kind of conclusive though. While these volunteersunits were undoubtedly brave and effective in combat - they were also part of the mass murder machine the Nazi's unleashed on the Soviet Union. The Dutch Former SS man's interview was clearly hiding the truth. He would say that and he is evasive on the question about 'knowing'. Possibly he did not commit any war crimes or oversee any. But he MUST have known. The human mind likes to simplify. Goodies and baddies is for children. It's possible to be a brave soldier who fights the enemy with skill and courage and a murderer at the same time. Some people don't seem to be able to grasp this. Thanks for laying this out so clearly and dispassionately. Your channel is brilliant.

In the Battle of Berlin those SS units from other countries fought until the end because they knew they would be tried in their home countries for war crimes etc. People can be be brutal when it comes to war.
Indeed, Spaniards and French SS fought at the Reichstag battle.

Another good job, let's get facts straight, War is hell, hell is war, no army in history have every not committed a war crime, but if you on the losing side prepare to get the blame, some men are hero's other are not, some are cowards, criminals and crooks, others are mislead, the best soldier can brake down and commit a war crime one day and stand up for decency the next and die a hero the day after. This is a moot question pertaining to the video, but where did you get that map? There's gotta be some kinda story behind it. I've watched alot of your earlier content n maybe I missed the story but that map is the best part of your set. The uniforms cool but that maps top shelf.

@@NathanDudani The map I was able to find that depicts the Saami cultural range is one of the reasons why I asked if an episode on this has been made. The map shows that the area the Saami range involves Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. I don't know about Scandinavia, but I do know that Russia has a very long history of being cruel to minorities.

A good video I’ve been interested in, the volunteers weren’t all ‘just fighting communism’.
I’m also interested in the coming video of how the volunteers were treated at the end of the war as I’ve heard they were treated terribly. The question will be justified but personally I don’t think one crime deserves another crime to be committed.

Grim stuff. It reminds me of early US history along the frontier when Indian tribes were still very strong and the white settlers were weak. Fear, race hatred, atrocities and reprisals were the order of the day. In WW2 Europe it was, of course, on a much larger scale, but the same emotions and passions seem to have been involved.

A hard history to hear when it has to to with your own countrymen I'm sure at least to some degree but what a great video in terms of information and narration. I have to ask because I'm not sure if you mentioned in this video or others about the dutch Viking divisions but when the war was over did the dutch government and\or monarchy punish and banish any of these dutch SS volunteers from returning to the Netherlands? How were these people looked at by the dutch society and government shortly after the war and into the later years in the country?

The Dutch which you obviously know also but just for people watching I wanted to make that point who may not know. I have always been very fond of Dutch culture and it’s people since very young age from visiting Netherlands.
This material is shocking, but necessary. Very important is to say that those soldiers were brave but also cruel and full of hate. I always wonder what was in minds of those people?

These are common things to happen in war, i strongly believe that whenever war occurs, ''ordinary'' men can be turned into mercyless beasts very quickly. This sadly seems to be human(men?) nature and it's not only soldiers who fought for the Nazi regime or the Sovier Union. You can look up some of the interviews with Vietnam veterans that talk openly about the crimes they comitted and got away with easily. Old people, women, children, all innocent, it really doesn't matter when you believe they are the ''enemy'' and lots of men seem to get a very strong rush out of raping, torture and killing the innocent. I wonder how many of us would do the same...
When you get older, you quickly realize it's hard to know what WE would have done in the same situation. For sure.
