I could only hear 1 click noise from the starter trying to engage with each key stroke. I immediately ordered a starter, but decided to go ahead and take apart the nessessary items so that when the new starter arrived, I was ready to go. When I finally got to the wire connector off of the sylinoid, I noticed green corrosion. Luckily I had some electrical parts cleaner on hand and an old toothbrush. I cleaned up the connector carefully with the parts cleaner and toothbrush. Then I used some steel wool on the starter prong that the connector clips on to. Starts and drives fine! Glory!! Thanks for this tip, Had a no start no crank yesterday. Watched your video along with several others on what to do. The last check I did before pulling the starter was shake the connector while my wife cranked it and boom, it started. My Sonata is a 2006 with a different looking connector. I will probably not be able to find a replacement part so I just cleaned the connector and smashed the blades together with some needlenoise plyers. Should work untill I find something else.

And I did not notice where taking it out,.could you make it more clear plz? Thanks for your help
You must disconnect the small black connector that clips on to the starter solenoid. It's the ONLY clip on the starter since the other larger battery cable bolts on. Once disconnected, you should use a test light to probe the inside of the clip. Have a friend turn the car over while you have the test light probe inserted, if it lights up, your wiring is all good there, but the connector itself may bad bad to the extent that the clip still attaches to the starter but the pin does not make full contact. This is a common problem which is hard to diagnose, so I made the video to address it. If you wanted to do long term testing perhaps because you may have a new starter or something like that, then you can make a custom light that installs permanently under the edge of the hood visible when starting and then, if the light doesn't come on when you engage the starter, you know the problem is further back say at the park neutral switch. But it starts AT the starter connection no matter what you do.
I have a 2002 sonata doing the same. It turns over slightly with good charge on the battery but won't crank over with a little shot of starting fluid. I don't like using starting fluid but eventually would crank over but not start or stay on. The starter also wouldn't do anything at times just like your video. Maybe it's the same issue that you described?
I had same issue. Come to find out I spilled oil while refilling that leaked into the starter where the wire from the battery is connected to the starter causing the nut to loosen over time. So I didn't have a secure connection from battery to starter
Hi.I have a. 05 elantra.Engine looks the same.Just bought it,driving it home and I give it some gas at a light and I hear al oud pop .Then smoke. It died, so my fiance said the battery exploded.Went and got another one,now it has this issue. Think rhat might be my problem as well?
having this issue now, im single need to fix it myself. If you could tell me the name of the piece and point to where its located, that would really help.
Could you please identify exactly where the part is located in the engine compartment? You point the camera into the compartment, but if you could use a stick or something to touch the actual part it would be super helpful and appreciated. Thanks
Carl Schneider the connector is ON the starter. you must locate it under the exhaust manifold by removing the heat shield. After that the connector will be easy to see on the top of starter.
Jack the car up and install jack stands for safety, lay down in front of the car. Remove the plastic protector from the driver's side with a 10 mm socket. The starter is right above the exhaust pipe. I had to remove the bolts from the exhaust flange and pull it down a little in order to remove the heat shield from the starter and expose the wires and plug to work on them. You have to work at it a bit but you can get the heat shield out and pound it back in with a rubber mallet or even a block of wood. Doing this yourself will save you $400 by not taking it to a repair shop !
Ryan Hoge it’s a simple spade type connector you get in any electrical kit for your car stereo wiring. But use the female side since you’re connecting to the male end on the starter.
Im having this issue ! I actually replaced starter and put in new one, worked great no problems !! My car first started acting funny unlocking and locking by itself ... the lock on remote doesnt work even with new battery on key ring. Then a few days ago, my car would not crank same issue as before. Im sure its the starter... I've only had it a yr? I wonder what went wrong ... I will be exchanging my starter... Seems electrical maybe as well.... ? Help anyone, mom of three here lol thank you.
Same thing happening on my 07 Hyundai Entourage no crank intermittent. It’s getting worse tried numerous things today it took about 50 turns of the key until it finally cranked definitely going to look at the starter signal wire connector
Aha. I initially thought about this (the starter wire) as my issue on my 2005 Hyundai Tucson intermittent no crank- and I guess I'll keep it in mind, but then discovered it would crank (and start) when I wiggled the key, so I'm gonna try replacing my ignition starter switch (myself) because it's cheaper than the ignition lock cylinder and key, and I feel my trouble is in this region. (Also initially thought about the neutral safety switch, the starter, and the battery of course.
I would like to ask a question to you good sir, this is a separate issue that I'm having however I just need professional advice. When the car has hit a rough patch of Road oftentimes after turning off the car and turn it back on it goes into limp mode which is 2nd gear running only but, after driving it for period of 5 to 10 minutes but then goes right back to normal. I asked electrician and he said that it could possibly be the wires connecting? What are your thoughts on this? Thank you so much in advance.
Godwin Ayide below exhaust manifold. Heat shield covering it. You will need a Chilton’s manual to see how to take it off. Basic mechanic skills are required.
Cameron Leasing Team ok thanks, I’m kind of stuck away from home parked in the street and this problem is happening so I have to try my luck getting under there or towing it somewhere
I just got mine a week ago. It's an 04 Hyundai Sonata V6. Ran completely fine but now I put the key in and everything turned on. Heard the starter click but then when I tried to start I lost all power. Got out and then back in and it repeated that process 2 more times. Now I have no power whatsoever.
Bmxunderground2 my car is doing the same thing not starting or cranking but mine is an 05 sonata I tried the whole battery thing and it's good it's cold where I'm at ,could it be frozen fuel lines ? What's the part called your holding and where is it located cause about a week earlier I filled my gas tank and the car did not want to start it was cranking trying to start but I eventually got it to crank up at this time it wasn't cold so it may be what your talking about I don't want to get it towed to a shop and spend a lot of money PLEASE HELP ?!
Mind is doing the same thing but I turn key no dash lights or anything turn on I got power inside the car and doors to lock and unlock. And I also put a new battery and started is good. But car don’t crank or anything.
Hi!!.. thanks for your help..I have the same problem..I removed the starter and had it tested..the test we're good..I recently purchased a new battery also..I also replaced the connection as you suggested..still no crank.. I switched starter relays around as well.. nothing still..I put a test light on the connection to the starter and it didn't light up..so I'm not getting power to the starter.. what do you think is my problem? Thanks in advance
Steve Dwete NEGLOKPE ADJEVI please watch other videos to find where your starter is located if the engine is different than the Sonata. If it is the same, your starter is below the exhaust manifold. 10mm socket requires to get the heat shield off. Then follow directions in video.
Hey have you ever had any problems with ur transmission not wanting to shift?, Reason for asking is that I have a 2004,sonata, V6, Shiftronic transmission and when I put it in reverse it will jerk really hard and when it's in drive it don't shift to the next gear and when in manual it won't shift , stuck in second gear replaced input and output sensors and the speed sensor with no luck, really could use some help on this one!!
My car is having the same issue no cranking at all starter is good ignition switch is good starter relay fuse is working but the wire with this peice on it is dead how do you replace the wire if possible or what other things can I try any help appreciated
Kasey Leavitt you will need to take it to a shop to have them do it. Just show them the video and they should be able to help pretty affordable. If you want to try to do it yourself you will need to find a video on removing the starter. You only have to watch the part where it shows you how the wires are taken off. Then you should watch a video on how to crimp a connector on one of the audio or electrical channels here on RUclips.
Hey I have this same car and I don't have the key but I need to put it in neutral to move it.. Do u have any tips to put it in neutral with out the key?
yes there should be a shift lock slot on the center console next to the shifter pop the little plastic piece out And them you can either use a flat head screw driver or a spare key to push the shift lock with either object your using and then you can get out of park without key..
I am having same problem. Just clicksnonce when I go to start it. I did everything including replacingnsignsl switch and it's still not working idk what to do :(
Yours sounds like a battery or starter issue. If it clicks you are getting power and this video won’t help. good news is it’s probably a simpler fix. Have the battery and starter tested at Autozone and replace the one that’s no good.
Having this problem right now. New starter and battery still nothing. My starter also gets hot when turning the ignition. Do you think this could be my solution? Either way I will try it.
My 2004 is doing the same thing, however I also have no headlights......does this same kind of issue do this. Alternator is good. New battery. Battery tested too.
Dark7string different circuit. You will need to trace down the lighting circuit first and look for a short. This video is only for no start issue related to starter signal wire.
Courtney Caulder who ever is working on your car needs to watch this video, perform the fix and see if you still have the problem. Then we can go from there.
Kyle Wilmath you have to start there at the plug. Use a test light to confirm 12v comes to it when the key is turned. If no 12v power there on start then you don’t do this fix, you move farther up the stream. Check the physical condition of the neutral switch. Then electrical, then back farther to the relay, and so on until you trace your problem down. There isn’t always one fix, this is just a really tricky one that’s simple to start with. You will want to watch some other videos of no start to see how they trouble shoot those areas.
Kyle Wilmath find the videos on the other items I briefly mention in the video.. also consider the other circumstances like what was happening with the car before it stopped starting
Did the lights start dimming on you car when you turned the ignition? My car is having almost exactly the same problem, and there were no signs of a failing starter, but it just won't even try to start or turn over. nothing happens at all.
pathy14 if your lights are dimming the very first step you want to do is have your battery tested. If your vehicle is suffering from what is described in my video only, the lights will not dim.
Do U Park Your Car in Lot,Where Animals Have Access to UnderNeath It? If So,Have SomeOne Get UnderNeath the Car ,If It Doesn't Crank At All. On the 01-05 ,2.4 ,4 Cyls. clicking is good. It means the problem in this video is NOT happening to you. It's likely you have a bad or discharged battery or the starter itself is bad. Thats where I would start in your situation.
sonatas are not good cars, hands down. Just finished replacing the starters plastic actuator lever in my mothers 2.4, 2011 sonata. In doing so and researching i find there is a SHIT TON of possible no crank possibilities, recalls, and money pit stories around this car. heres a few for example. The 2 in the video, neutral safety switch, a tranny sensor, starter relays, key fob battery could keep it from turning over, various fuses. Thats just off the top of my head and all of them are common enough to have loads of info about it, which doesn't make it okay these are problems not standard wear n tear. I got the starter lever replacement done right at 3 hours for 15$ minus drive time for parts, research/prep. ridiculous that they used a plastic lever in the starter
Dont even try to say any other car could have these issues as well, although that is true the sonata has recalls involving the electrical system and even the park mode on the gear shift as well as an airbag recall. btw the "park" in this car again separate from the ebrake is weak enough that you could rock the car and snap it, boom no more braking in the park option and you either are forced to use e-brake forever or pull the tranny. SHIT CAR
Hey man I'm having an issue like this, however when I turn the car over I keep a couple different beeping noises that are constant and can't seem to find the source. Any help would be amazing!
First Name if your car turns over then this solution is not what you need. When the starter rotated the engine, a no start should be traced back to fuel, spark or compression. Those are much more in-depth situations which will require several more video searches on each of those subject matters.
Would this still be a possibility if everything was there you indicated, however car makes sound of trying to turn over but fails. All electrics on. Battery checks ok. Still won't start. Mechanics can't find solution. Single parent here, trying to troubleshoot to find solution.
No, if your starter motor is turning but the engine doesn't turn over thats one issue. If the engine turns over but doesn't start thats also another issue. This video is specifically to address no start from no starter activity when the key is turned.

Thank you for the video. I'll check that
Could you please identify exactly where the part is located in the engine compartment?
Is there another name for this part? I called mutiple part stores trying to see how much this was and they had no idea what i was talking about.
? Help anyone, mom of three here lol
thank you.
Same thing happening on my 07 Hyundai Entourage no crank intermittent. It’s getting worse tried numerous things today it took about 50 turns of the key until it finally cranked definitely going to look at the starter signal wire connector
What is the piece called in your holding on your hand
Ty man this really really helps
Extremely helpful
Must you remove the silver starter heat shield? Work around it.
I’m having this issue on a 2005 Santa Fe. No idea where the starter is
Godwin Ayide below exhaust manifold.
Kc Da Human start by confirming your battery. This failure doesn’t affect power at all.
And did you clean this small part or replace it
I have a rental sonota 2018 the power is on but the car wont start. Please help me me
Mind is doing the same thing but I turn key no dash lights or anything turn on I got power inside the car and doors to lock and unlock. And I also put a new battery and started is good. But car don’t crank or anything.
Seems helpful lest what thought make a click sound no turn no start
Hi!!.. thanks for your help..I have the same problem..I removed the starter and had it tested..the test we're good..I recently purchased a new battery also..I also replaced the connection as you suggested..still no crank.. I switched starter relays around as well.. nothing still..I put a test light on the connection to the starter and it didn't light up..so I'm not getting power to the starter.. what do you think is my problem? Thanks in advance
That only leaves: Ignition switch, neutral safety switch, or brake light switch
Hey. Please where can I find this part on my Hyundai Santafee. I changed my Neutral Safety Switch and my car still not starting
Steve Dwete NEGLOKPE ADJEVI please watch other videos to find where your starter is located if the engine is different than the Sonata. If it is the same, your starter is below the exhaust manifold. 10mm socket requires to get the heat shield off. Then follow directions in video.
What is the piece needed called exactly
Hey have you ever had any problems with ur transmission not wanting to shift?, Reason for asking is that I have a 2004,sonata, V6, Shiftronic transmission and when I put it in reverse it will jerk really hard and when it's in drive it don't shift to the next gear and when in manual it won't shift , stuck in second gear replaced input and output sensors and the speed sensor with no luck, really could use some help on this one!!
You will need to get with a transmission guy. I haven’t had any issues yet to be of help with them on the Sonata.
04 with the 2.4 had same problem. Crankshaft position sensor.
Have An 05 Sonata & the STARTER Is A Poor Placement Design of Hot Lead Wire.Squirrel Had Chewed Into It,Used A Butterfly Splice & Solved My Problem.
Where do you cut the best shield.
Have exactly the same problem with 2006 Sonata. Replaced ignition switch, still won't start
Where did you buy that part? I have the same problem. But I don’t know if I can find that connector.
David Rojas it’s just a spade type female connector you can get at parts store or Walmart
Hi mine looks like it has something loose but idk if it has to do with fuse box. Mines a 2006 where would i find that part?
Lessly Gutierrez which part?
That lil part that you show?
Having this problem right now. New starter and battery still nothing. My starter also gets hot when turning the ignition. Do you think this could be my solution? Either way I will try it.
2010 Sonata btw
@@gregosta9514 I think that one is newer than mine show in the video. I’m not sure what they use in those. I’d make sure the engine turns over.
My shifter is really really hard to even move and park will not even work but does the same thing but I can barely move the shifter
What is it when your starter just spins on my hyundia sonata 2004
My 2004 is doing the same thing, however I also have no headlights......does this same kind of issue do this. Alternator is good. New battery. Battery tested too.
Dark7string different circuit. You will need to trace down the lighting circuit first and look for a short. This video is only for no start issue related to starter signal wire.
bmxunderground2 awesome thanks man.
I had my starter rebuild and it worked fine for a week or so now it's back not wanting to start or nothing. Any ideas of what it could be?
Courtney Caulder who ever is working on your car needs to watch this video, perform the fix and see if you still have the problem. Then we can go from there.
bmxunderground2 come to find out the black clip piece that plugs into the starter keeps coming off for some reason
@@courtneycaulder2677 Yes. That is what this video solves. The problem with the black clip. Glad you got things all fixed up.
hi, what's the name of that part?
My 06 has the same problem but no lights on the dash when I turn the key. Can you help, Thanks in advance!
EBGB this is just for no start condition when everything else works correctly. No dash lights may be fuses or battery.
He mine is a 08 and it does that but also stuck in reverse what do i do
Do you have to remove the starter to repair wire end? 2003 Sonata 2.7
Philip DAngelo no
What size/type spade connector did you replace it with?
Micah Weeks The standard type he would find in an audio repair kit
I did everything you said plus I got a new starter but still nothing.
You will want to watch some other videos of no start to see how they trouble shoot those areas.
bmxunderground2 I replaced the starter and battery. Checked fuses and all that. I have no idea what else to do.
I got the battery tested and it's fine. Apparently the lights dimming is just a feature of this model of car. (2002 Hyundai Sonata)
Do U Park Your Car in Lot,Where Animals Have Access to UnderNeath It? If So,Have SomeOne Get UnderNeath the Car ,If It Doesn't Crank At All. On the 01-05 ,2.4 ,4 Cyls. Sonatas,MAin Lead for Starter is Exposed,So Animals ,Like Squirels or Mice Can Knaw Into The Main Lead to Starter.Thats What Happened To Mine.Simply Used A BUTTERFLY CONNECTION ON THE BROKEN CONN.& SOLVED MY PROBLEM ON MY O5.
Right on. Thanks. Shield hard to move. Wiggled th e wire, sprayed with electro if cleaner. See how long it lasts. Then will cut shield. Thanks.
Philip DAngelo 10mm nut hidden around back side of shield. Get that and the front one off and it’ll come right out.
mine just clicks.
wont turn over.
any help?
thanks!!
clicking is good. It means the problem in this video is NOT happening to you. It's likely you have a bad or discharged battery or the starter itself is bad. Thats where I would start in your situation.
Hi could you please just tell me where is exactly the part thank you

sonatas are not good cars, hands down.
SHIT CAR
Did changing the starter allow the car to start again?
Hey man I'm having an issue like this, however when I turn the car over I keep a couple different beeping noises that are constant and can't seem to find the source. Any help would be amazing!
Note mine is a 2006 if that has any difference.
First Name if your car turns over then this solution is not what you need. When the starter rotated the engine, a no start should be traced back to fuel, spark or compression. Those are much more in-depth situations which will require several more video searches on each of those subject matters.
Do you still have this car? I need help please
Jonathan Grafals yes
@@bmxunderground2 great so the clip for the cam sensor broke. I replaced it but now I'm having difficulty placing the wires in the right spot
@@bmxunderground2 could you show me the order on yours?
So the only way to get to this is to take off the bottom panel and heat sheild from under the car?
Yes
Would this still be a possibility if everything was there you indicated, however car makes sound of trying to turn over but fails. All electrics on. Battery checks ok. Still won't start. Mechanics can't find solution. Single parent here, trying to troubleshoot to find solution.
No, if your starter motor is turning but the engine doesn't turn over thats one issue. If the engine turns over but doesn't start thats also another issue. This video is specifically to address no start from no starter activity when the key is turned.
that's your starter. Not a cable connector causing a ground issue because it cranks.
How do you fix the p***Well?I didn't getting no gas. What do I do
I can’t make out what you’re asking. This video is about checking electrical parts related to starting system, not anything fuel related.
Where do i get the little connection???
Would it cause it to spark?
Where exactly is it
