Agree 100%! Unsure how popular they are short term, but seeing reviews of older sets that Jang never reviewed, is one of my biggest joys. It's just so neat to see a modern day review of a classic set, or 20 year old set, with newer eyes, that can review objectively.
As a kid, I dreamt of this set. Even when the 2012-ish one was out, something about how dark this felt and like a full asylum instead of one thing just always gripped me. Scarecrow was also my favourite, so his tower was so cool to me
This set is crazy evocative of Batman: Arkham Asylum despite coming out years before it, too. Multiple buildings, the aesthetic, the choice of villains.
oh that makes sense. I was just commenting on how I had those rifles as a kid, but was well into my 'dark age' by the time Lego made any kind of Batman sets, lol.
the build techniques back then were undeniably worse, but there is such a charm to these old sets. I feel as though the lower definition of the sets from this period means that you have to do some amount of imagination based work, which in my opinion, means that inaccuracies seem/feel less obvious. Maybe its just nostalgia but i love this era of lego where they try and represent something with the broadest strokes possible.
I agree. Take the contents of the cell for example. One kid could imagine it's a table, another a chair. One could imagine the glass is water, another a bottle medicine, etc.
This was my favorite era: in the early 2000s, the building principles were so sloppy. So many of the Star Wars sets would fall to pieces if you looked at them wrong. By this point, they still had some hunky designs but they stayed together and were very playable by comparison.
i dont really see how they were worse? they very much follow the priicpals of interlocking lego brick design. they are just less true to the originals due to using actual bricks/blocks?
The realistic rifle element was still in production in 2006 (introduced 1996, retired 2013 with the Lone Ranger) so they specifically chose that musket over it for some reason.
I'd love to know the reason for this - perhaps the musket was a cheaper part and so it fit the budget? This is the kind of info I'd love to find out from the designer as it's such an interesting and charming touch. I just figured that was the only rifle they had at the time....
Lego Batman 2006 really does blend the gap between the Batman animated series and the Batman Arkham games perfectly, it’s like the Lego designers took the original cartoon, tweaked the designs to be more legoified, then Rocksteady took those Lego designs and made them into a more realistic game. Arkham is a good example of this, it’s the BTAS brown brick colour scheme with BTAS inspired antagonists, but instead of the more boxy Edwardian mansion it’s modeled more like a gothic castle, something that was translated over to the Arkham games, it even has a big castle turret that the game copied almost 1 to 1 Also as a kid: this set in a reference book around 2012/13 after Lego DC relaunched was my first exposure to Nightwing. I didn’t know that robin could grow up, that was the coolest thing ever to me and I was gutted that he wasn’t in a modern set!
Oh man, I remember getting this set back in Christmas of 08 and how excited I was to have all of these additional villains to team up with the rest of my rogue’s gallery and some guy called nightwing. The asylum parts brought along with it so much creativity into building castles, bases for good, and bad guys, and making entirely new prisons! Truly was a standout set in my childhood. And I still have the sticker sheet with the omitted names on the cell doors because I wanted to use them for a variety of different characters to be locked up! Good times…
This set was designed by Bjarke Lykke Madsen and according to Brickset they took inspiration from both the comics, and movies, plus old and new spooky looking buildings. Jens Kronvold Frederiksen designed the details in the interior so you'd have to ask them about that dark 3rd floor! Sadly no mention as to why muskets were included when more realistic rifles were available at the time.
Bought this set used a few years ago and it still continues to be one of my absolute favourite Lego sets of all time. The spooky atmosphere and decrepit castle-like structures just appeals to me sooo much, along with the fact that it has the most amount of jail cells out of any Arkham Asylum set, and that creepy room on the top floor of the main building is so ridiculously detailed and suggestive, it almost reveals some of the darker practices that might be taking place at the Asylum. Only thing really missing from the set is a Hugo Strange minifig imo, but the lineup is still fantastic!
There is no way I can express how excited I am for this review. This is one of my childhood dream sets - never got it, always stared at it in the catalogue. It looked so cool back then, and looked like it had the most fun and mysterious play features ever! And now I get to watch your video, and it's almost like I own it after all these years. Thanks Jang, I love the old school reviews
Jang, what an awesome review. I had this set as a kid, hard to believe just how old it is now. I played with the ambulance all the time, and the separate buildings made it really easy and fun to set up an entire "courtyard" play space. Having the hero and especially villain minifigs that looked straight out of the comic books or animated TV shows was really, really cool. Felt like the luckiest kid in the world opening it up in front of my parents.
This hits me in the nostalgia nerve. Such a fun set at the time and I loved the glow in the dark head. Do I have even a single one of those figures anymore? Nope. But I still have many of the printed parts and find them very useful for custom stuff. Thanks again for a great review, Jang!!!
It’s so interesting that you mentioned the ambulance mirror printing. I noticed that on the newish Lego Friends set with an ambulance didn’t have mirror printing and I felt like it looked very odd to see on an ambulance because I’m so used to seeing mirrored AMBULANCE on actual ambulances. So seeing this mirrored like that looks right.
AHHH i love this set! completed my 2006 batman collection w this one. very charming set huge early 2000s lego vibes! also the figure selection is great a couple of very valuable exclusive figs
That "light" above the bed on the top floor is totally the headpiece you put on a patient's head to give electroshock 'therapy'. That's why it raises and lowers above the bed. And the bars on the sides are for strapping them down.
Truthfully, that looks more fun than many of today's offerings. As a collector, detail-heavy stuff is very cool, but I think for kids that simplified design is a lot more interesting.
I know other comments already said this but thank you so much for reviewing this old set now. I’ve been debating on getting it but there’s not alotta good quality reviews on yt. I always come to your page before buying a set because you show every tiny detail with amazing video quality. I appreciate this video alot, planning on ordering it soon now
I love that this set is in separate structures. Nowadays I think they want it as all one piece so it has that display-ability that older fans crave. I think that just ends up hiking up the price. I used to love spacing things out and imagining the empty space to be another area. Newer sets end up being more expensive yet give less freedom for kids.
For someone who missed out on a lot of these old Lego Batman sets, I appreciate you doing videos like this one. Please keep doing these reviews on older sets if you can, thanks!
I very much prefer the big pieces. I love seeing the raised baseplates and unique parts that sets are built around as opposed to dozens of tiny pieces inflating the part count
I can say having this as a kid back then, I loved everything being separate structures! It was fun rearranging the buildings into different layouts and sometimes imagining how they might fit together as one thing.
I love how even with the simple building techniques, they are able to communicate so many different ideas and spark the imagination of people enjoying the set.
I really love seeing a review of a really old set! I’d love to see more videos of old set reviews… but I understand if it can’t be the case since these are WILDLY expensive 😅
I’m 24 years old, so I grew up during the 2004-2009 Lego era. It’s always cool for me to see you review sets from that time period, but it’s especially cool to see you review an item as rare and unique as the original Arkham Asylum here. Great work!
As a kid, this one was one of my top five most wanted Lego sets from the Batman series. I loved watching the Batman animations that Lego put out on their website to promote it.
Would be nice to be able to connect the pieces if a kid wanted to, but I do like the flexibility of having them separate. Could make a court yard in the middle of the grounds in a way. Love that you did this review! There's definitely a shortage of quality reviews of older sets and honestly I wasn't even aware of this set! [as a Lego and Batman fan, I sadly *do* have both the 2013 and 2017 sets which cost a fair amount more back then, then this set did but both have nearly double the number of pieces]. Can't believe the third floor and all the accessories of darkness up there! Wow! And for whatever reason, I find the musket weapons to be very charming in this set! Thank you for reviewing this and thank you Leonard for requesting this! Love seeing older sets reviewed!
Love the classic Batman sets!! I’m fortunate enough to have the batcave, Batmobile, and batwing sets from that first wave and I have a bunch of the other minifigs, best theme in Lego imo
I love this old set so much. I managed to get one of the Toys R Us display pieces featuring this set along with the Batwing and Batmobile sets, and something neat I found out was that Arkham actually is mostly empty on the inside since you wouldn't normally see it from that angle. It's also got a rod going through all the floors to keep it secured.
Even thought I never had this set, your review still brought back some warm memories of designs from that era. The muskets are pretty hilarious. Hope the guards didn't have to face the tommy gun.
As has been said "If I haven't seen it, it's new to me.".😁 Funny was just looking into a retired Lego set before you posted this, Monster Fighters mansion. Yeah I came across some large stickers going across many bricks in another brand and thinking if I take it apart that is going to be problematic.🤔 Not that long ago for us older fans, used to be much thicker and chunkier. Kind of expected that, less custom flourishes and tighter play value. Those are just tools for preparing healthy vegetables they force the criminals to eat lol.😉 I don't miss those giant one-pieces since many can easily be replicated with smaller reusable components. I agree, that one tower has a lot of character to it. Awesome review btw.
I just realised on the top floor, if you slide the weird green canisters out, the space left behind looks awfully like an electric chair, that's quite grim to say the least...
This was my first big set. for my mom to get this for me was a really big deal for her because it was just me and her, and 80 dollars went a long way back then. This set holds a special place in my heart
I was so excited when I found out LEGO was doing a Batman line and am so glad I picked up all those sets. Really liked Arkham set for displaying all my Batman minifigs.
With both the weirdly dark medical room and the fact that Scarecrow’s room lets him have weapons I’m wondering if the intended story of this set is supposed to be like a more cartoony version of Batman Begins (which came out the previous year) where Scarecrow fronted as an Arkham psychiatrist and tortured the inmates, rather than him being one of the inmates
I don't think the musket was the closest to modern firearms at the time. When I was a kid, they introduced the cowboy theme and it came with it the more modern than musket rifles. And I know I had cowboy sets before my dark-age.
Well this is a nice surprise! I love this set. I got the Nightwing figure and his bike from EBay a long time ago. I just recently Bricklinked the pieces for the original Two Face Escape set. Hope you have the opportunity to review more classic Batman sets.
My brother and I actually got this set so long ago, it was mainly his set but I remember working along with my dad and brother to build it. I still have that cursed sticker over multiple pieces in my scrap parts drawer
This is such a great playset. Maybe one of the best I’ve seen - it doesn’t have open, dead space like most play sets did. I was way too old to buy these toy sets by the point they came out. Even LEGO Star Wars was on the upper end of my age bracket. I call them toys, because that’s what they are. The space in this set is meant for play, not display. I appreciate that your reviews include this perspective when appropriate, Jang. It’s important context, and they shouldn’t be judged like the unplayable X-Men Easter Egg Manor, which will never be played with by a child (at least, not with their parents’ permission!)
I remember getting extras of that Batman sticker in the Batmobile set, and I stuck duplicates ALL over the batmobile. Super silly but it was fun at the time
Very few high quality reviews exist of these old Batman sets. These videos are amazing for preservation’s sake.
Agree 100%! Unsure how popular they are short term, but seeing reviews of older sets that Jang never reviewed, is one of my biggest joys. It's just so neat to see a modern day review of a classic set, or 20 year old set, with newer eyes, that can review objectively.

Jang reviewing my white whale set was not on my bingo card
Same
Lucky me! it was on my bingo card
3:48 the western rifle mold apparently was still around, but it has not been used between 2004 and 2008 for some reasons
oh that makes sense. I was just commenting on how I had those rifles as a kid, but was well into my 'dark age' by the time Lego made any kind of Batman sets, lol.
The did bring it back for Indiana Jones in 2008 and 2009 though!
I was gonna say... Couldn't they have used that one? Interesting choice to abandon such a good piece!
the build techniques back then were undeniably worse, but there is such a charm to these old sets. I agree. Take the contents of the cell for example. One kid could imagine it's a table, another a chair. One could imagine the glass is water, another a bottle medicine, etc.
A lot of opportunity for rebuilding and modification, too - I appreciate Jang pointing out how the guards are not Arkham-specific, for example
This was my favorite era: in the early 2000s, the building principles were so sloppy. So many of the Star Wars sets would fall to pieces if you looked at them wrong. By this point, they still had some hunky designs but they stayed together and were very playable by comparison.

What’s crazy is I was 7 when I start watching you I’m 21 now and this the first time in years I seen your page again ! True definition of nostalgia
PLEASE keep making retro videos like this Jang!!
The minifigures make me feel so nostalgic for the first Lego Batman video game
Oh man, I remember getting this set back in Christmas of 08 and how excited I was to have all of these additional villains to team up with the rest of my rogue’s gallery and some guy called nightwing. Thanks for this one, Leonard K, and JANG for reviewing it! I enjoy watching you review the old school sets

Seeing Jang review this is surreal
I love the aslume 😊
Man
Actually by 2006 they absolutely had the classic rifles, no clue why they went with the muskets lol
Jang, what an awesome review. I had this set as a kid, hard to believe just how old it is now. I learned about the Ambulance thing today.

The attic bed having handles on the sides is giving me big "electroshock therapy" vibes.

Wow, I never thought I would see Jang review anything from the original Batman line

It's cool to go back and see these old sets that were so different back then!
These throwback reviews are my favourite as it allows me to get to know sets I once looked at in wonder in DK books or Lego catalogues. Thankyou Jang.
The Night wing hair piece is pretty wild, did not expect that!
lego batman 1 is the best lego theme, excited to see the arkham rumored for next year
This was the best LEGO set my parents got me for Christmas. I was so excited to get that Nightwing and Ivy. Such a fun time to be alive!
Jang, please do more reviews of these old sets if you can. Your take on these older sets is just so good to watch
For someone who missed out on a lot of these old Lego Batman sets, I appreciate you doing videos like this one. Please keep doing these reviews on older sets if you can, thanks!

Awesome to get a high quality review of this set! I almost have the entire 2006-2008 batman collection sealed in box :)
I actually looked last week to see if you had a review of this set! Now you do and its a modern review. Dream come true. Crazy
An absolute joy to see you review set, but an incredibly joyous occasion if it's a classic like this!
so cool that you reviewed this, the 2006-2008 batman sets are so good
Love the classic Batman sets!! I’m fortunate enough to have the batcave, Batmobile, and batwing sets from that first wave and I have a bunch of the other minifigs, best theme in Lego imo
Man, I remember staring at this in the catalogue! What a throwback!
The musket piece is really funny in this context 😂
Great video Jang! Crazy to see how far Lego has come
Oh man, I remember staring at this kit for ages in the LEGO catalog as a kid. What a cool kit.
I love your reviews of old Batman sets. Thank you!

Those green bits might be kryptonite great detail awesome minifigs looks fun set great review jang 👍
These old sets really show how mucht better the new sets are. So much more details in the modern sets!
Not a Batman fan but I love your reviews of old sets. Especially between late 2000's-early 2010's. Please do more!! Thanks Jang
This was during what I consider to be the golden age of Lego. 2005-2012. I remember wanting this set as a kid
Who else is hyped for the upcoming dtc Arkham Asylum?
We need an Clayface minifigure that matches the original videogame
I remember my buddy had this way back when. I always loved looking at it, as it was before I started collecting legos myself.
This brings me back to the cherished memories of my childhood.
Even thought I never had this set, your review still brought back some warm memories of designs from that era. The muskets are pretty hilarious. Hope the guards didn't have to face the tommy gun.
Reviews of old sets are such a treat. 😊 More please!😇
Jang you don’t know how long we’ve waited for this
As has been said "If I haven't seen it, it's new to me.".😁 Funny was just looking into a retired Lego set before you posted this, Monster Fighters mansion.

Love The Old 2000’s LEGO Reveiws From you Jang
I just realised on the top floor, if you slide the weird green canisters out, the space left behind looks awfully like an electric chair, that's quite grim to say the least...
I used to have this set! My aunt got it for me when I was a kid. I am so mad at myself for not keeping it after all these years
This was my first big set. for my mom to get this for me was a really big deal for her because it was just me and her, and 80 dollars went a long way back then. This set holds a special place in my heart
I was so excited when I found out LEGO was doing a Batman line and am so glad I picked up all those sets. Really liked Arkham set for displaying all my Batman minifigs.
Always loved the old Poison Ivy minifigure. 💖
I remember using my first ever paycheck to buy this set, now it stores all my classic Lego Batman minifigs!
Thank you for requesting this video Leonard K! and thank you for reviewing, Jang!

Ah yes, 2000s and early 2010’s Lego. The absolute pinnacle. So glad I grew up with it.
Makes me very nostalgic for the time when I was a kid and these sets came out
Well this is a nice surprise!
Dream Batman set from my childhood along with the OG batcave
i love reviews of old sets ! thx
10:53 when did they stop making that rod piece?
Not every day you see a Lego torture chamber.
Yay for old set reviews 👏🏼
Always wanted this set. I started getting lego sets in 2008, just missed this one
I love the dark color scheme of this
Never had this set, but I had the Lego Batman set book, so there's still a sense of nostalgia here for me!
The reverse bat cape doesn't look that bad, actually. It just looks like he's cloaked it around himself, which is a common image of Batman.
I remember getting extras of that Batman sticker in the Batmobile set, and I stuck duplicates ALL over the batmobile. Super silly but it was fun at the time
Jang review of 2006 Batcave would be legendary
Seeing this set again is like Anton ego taking that first bite of ratatouille
Ah beack iin the day when Lego cold make propper playsets - With actual playspace and fun features!
The doors for rounded cells are genius.
8:20 OK, that got me good.
Imagine having 2 of these! You could do vary cool setup with some modifications and maybe achieve Animated Series Arkham!
I would give amything to have this. I rememeber seeing it on store shelves when i was younger and passing it. I missed all the og batman sets
