    The reason the CMF Wolverine looks better is because it’s printed blue on yellow instead of yellow on blue.
    Doesn’t excuse anything. Dual-molded legs should be there when they’re needed. And light prints on dark plastic need to be done more than once per layer so we can get the right color.

    Stacking it next to the $230 USD Jazz Club just highlights the ridiculous pricing. How did something $100 more expensive fail to even be as tall or as thick as a two year old set that’s $100 cheaper.
    I don’t know where the money went here. This feels simultaneously over designed in some areas and ridiculously cheap in others.

      I understand Lego is a business, and their raison d'être is to make money, which they do with incredible effectiveness. But it feels more and more like they're they're trying to sucker the consumer or see what they can get away with instead of presenting a good, fair value to the customer. Declining quality, increasing prices (which were already crazy to any outsider who hasn't drunk the Kool-Aid), and bold little competitors that are making betters sets for lower prices: not a good look for Lego.

    What's disappointing about Lego's new 'eco-friendly' paper bags is that because of the plastic lining on them it makes it about as difficult to recycle as Lego's current plastic bags made from polypropylene (which, by the way, can still be recycled, although not as efficiently as other types of plastic). The transition to paper bags seems to just be a PR stunt and nothing more.

As someone who every year rebuilds a winter village I have thrown away the plastic bags the Lego came packaged in only to replace them with more plastic resealable sandwich bags. It would've been great if Lego had've included something like this from the start so nothing had to get discarded or recycled, there was just the option to reuse the packaging.

    I still feel like it could've been bigger at the exact same price point if they didn't cram so many details, stickered references and 1x1 pieces in the interior. Hardly any of those details are able to be viewed easily anyway when the build is completed. I love Lego buildings with interior details but they went too far here. If they went back to a similar detail level to Modular Buildings of around 2011-2015 they could've made the building a bit bigger which would allow more access to a slightly more sparsely detailed but still good interior.

    Is the print as bad as usual (in which case is it an issue that's dependent on the factory? The assumption being LAN members might have gotten a copy from a factory that improved printing), or is it slightly better but still not there yet?
    This is all so baffling to me

  • @NuclearXpotato1100
    @NuclearXpotato1100 Месяц назад +1

    I believe part of the reason Minidolls have better printing is due to their shaping allowing more clearance (printing increases the size and friction of a piece, this was especially a problem in the 2000s) and allowing the paint masks to fit around the curvature. This is the same reason why minifigures don't have printing on the sides of their torsos and why the leg printing isn't always aligned (the front and sides of the legs are two separate paint masks).
    The clearance is possibly the reason why Minifigure heads are getting better colour matching than the torsos (which are very close in size to bricks, whereas heads are a unique scale). I'm not sure what the exact solution would be that wouldn't result in figures having more easily damaged prints or Lego having dozens of midtone ink colours that are only used for printing (which would result in even more colour inconsistency).

    Great review! I agree with a lot of your takes such as print quality needing to be higher. and you mentioned that youd like to see more minifigures and i agree. Looking at the minifigure count in the daily bugal and the avengers tower, i would have liked to see at least 3 more new figures. I know those other two had so many because of minifigure bleed but i feel like the compromise here should have been, mire new minifigures but less overall minifigures. Cause currently the daily bugal has 5 minifigures with unique orints while this has only 4. So we're getting less unique minifigures and less overall minifigures and a smaller build for almost the same price. I think the pricing if thus set needs to be lowered quite a bit even though i do really like the set. I have it because i got it as a gift because i am a huge marvel and X-Men fan and the characters in this set are very important to me but i cant say i would recommend it to a casual fan or a fan of someone who is an X-Men fan but not a huge lego fan or the other way around.
    I will say i only half agree with what your saying about it being about the set and less so the minifigures. The minifigures have always been the main draw ti oego for me. They're styalized, charming and space efficient. Yes there are a lot of pros ti fully accurate action figures, but imo they're like video game "hyer realistic" graphics where they try to look photo realistic but end up looking uncanny and plasicy in an unintended way. Theyre also far to big to the point that theyre only good for display and just characters take uo a lot of space. Minifigures are charming, recognizable, styalized to avoid an uncany realism issue, and very space efficient. I like the sets and they provide a very good environment for your minifigures and hold most if the value of the sets, but if i had to pick to only get minifigures or only get the sets, i would pick the minifigures in a heartbeat.
    Also for print quality, i have a unserious, mostly just fun theory, that i want to make very clear is not based on any evidence or facts and is purly speculation for fun. And it is that minidolls are more rounded and harder to print on, so lego dedicates their good quality printers to them while minifigures are flatter and easier to pront in so they use their lower quality printers on them and that could be why we see more saturated printing on minidolls. As for minifigures faces with semi transparent flesh tones, mu theory is that its a mix of lower quality printers but aslo the plastic surface it is being pronted on. If you compare the plastic of a minifigre head to the arms, legs, and torso. You can feel that the head us more smooth and glossy than everything else so it likely doesnt hold ink as well. Minidolls dont have thus issue because they use the slightly more cours plasitc that the rest of the minifigure bodies and minidolls use for their heads and it likely holds ink better. Again this is all theory and not based in fact other than the fact that, as an art student, i know glossy surfaces don't hold paint and ink as well without veing primed or sanded first.

    I do think play features are important even for adult fans. For me it's the difference between a set that takes dust, to a set that I will show to people visiting. If it does something cool, it won't be forgotten

    More expensive sets....in times like these. I stopped with modulars, ideas, cars, buildings, etc because there is too much of it. I dont even have enough space for all the Star Wars stuff I still collect (and sure, some other Lego stuff as well, since now and then something really good designs are released). Btw, those paper bags arent that good for the environment at all. I have said it before, but I doubt people care: those paper bags have a plastic coating on the inside and therefor cant be recycled. They are just as bad for the environment as those full plastic bags.

    • @SO-ym3zs
      @SO-ym3zs Месяц назад

      The bags feel like greenwashing to me. Real strides in environmental friendliness would be great, but at the end of the day, Lego is a company that manufacturers and ships vast amounts of plastic parts all over the world with paper and plastic packaging. There's nothing environmentally friendly at the core of what they do, and paper bags with plastic inside will likely make no difference :(

    I think they needed to let the rear walls entirely pop off to get access to the interior. Maybe do the structure in terms of 'structural strips' that sit underneath each higher level, so the rear walls don't have to be structural below the level of the support frame.

    They made a mistake in the instructions booklet 3 page 40 starting at step 45 too 50 those are the sequence in order to build the sliding blackboard. The problem with following those instructions is. When you’re done. The backboard will completely hide the screen behind it and rest up agains the archway . But when you go and slide it to reveal what’s hidden behind it you’re left with half a sentinel , in order for the hidden screen to be revealed completely you have to make some changes at step 46 and 47
    The fix is to just remove the 1 x 1 on the left side then slide over the 2 x 5 over to the left then put the 1 x 1 you just removed next to the other 1 x 1. Now follow steps 48-50 as instructed
    Now when you slide the blackboard over to the window the hidden screen is completely visible . But when sliding it back the hidden screen isn’t so hidden anymore.. so there’s a give n take

      @@Lordodragonss if it had the minis for the price I would be ok with that challenge to do it... but so many heros and villans are missing, and not done very well. If they can make CMF level minis at 5$ then whats here is like 35$ worth of minis. just not a good balance unless they nailed the build.... and almost could have but went the direction of seeming to lure city moc makers into getting a cheap manor after sales of the minis.... gambit alone selling for 90$~ kinda absurd.

    The comparison to other buildings and the Daily Bugle really makes the price discrepancy so much more shocking. Between that the quantity and quality of the minifigs I'm holding out for a deep discount. Bare minimum for the minifigs, in addition to what you already said, should have had the following:
    Wolverine: Should be CMF quality, no excuses
    Cyclops: He needs dual molded yellow boots and a yellow hip piece. Both would go a long way.
    Rogue: Would have liked to see dual molded legs to make it apparent her leggings are a different color from her boots
    Magneto: Needs dual molded purple boots and a purple hip piece.
    Jean: Should have blue printing on the wrists to denote the bracers/wrist bands for this design and skin tone hands
    Gambit: Dual molded grey or blue boots. Or at least blue printed boots with a cloth piece that goes between the torso and legs to denote he's wearing a trench coat, or at least the cloth collar from the CMF Noir Detective.
    I was so excited when I heard LEGO Was going to be making X-Men sets but both sets so far seem to at least be massively overpriced and somewhat disappointing.

    For me this set greaty shows problem with todays Lego- Great build with great look.
    Thats all. Its not a FUN Set its just display piece.
    The minifig selection is weak especialy for price (this SHOULD HAVE BEEN a set where Sabertooth and Jubilee appears. The back SHOULD open as Kevins house to allow posing and play, and that Xavier reuing all pieces...SERIOUSLY? Ice man should have got transucent pieces, at least arms.
    Remember when in old LOTR set EACH character came with unique hat or beard? This is what I expect from Lego especialy for P R E M I U M sets.

    I think this set could’ve done with an underground section, obviously that makes it not fit with the Modular’s but then the danger room could be the full size of the baseplate, maybe with some room sectioned off for a cerebro dedicated room
    I also really have to agree that Lego is running out of excuses

    How come Lego has such an issue with print opacity? There are far cheaper toy lines that can do this correctly!

    Great review Jang! Definitely a disappointing set for me, especially the minifig quality! I usually agree that the actual build is what's important, but the minifigs really bring the whole thing down for me.
    I thought Rogue's torso print was bad but then the face prints on Jean, Gambit, and Cyclops are so grey! I have smaller problems with Xavier and Magneto but none of these minifigs look great to me except Storm; Mistress of the Elements whom they did a fantastic job with.
    Thank you for pointing out that the new ""paper"" bags are hard to recycle, that's a very dishonest thing for Lego to make a show of.
    I love the kinda supplemental video you did for this set so I'll share my thoughts on the actual build over there!

    • @Rocket1377
      @Rocket1377 Месяц назад +1

      No idea. There are tons of easter eggs packed into this set, but I think that is just meant to be a generic statue. The X-Men comic debuted in 1963 (the same year the first civilian went into space), so perhaps it's a reference to that?

    Thank you for this very detailed review. Shame about the quality of the minifigs. For such a pricey set they should up their game. And include a bigger cast of characters.
    This set was put on sale on the Disney Store by mistake [*all* lego sets, even Avenger's Tower and the $500 Barge were supposed to be exempt, but someone behind the scenes didn't exclude them]. 25% off, so $247.49 for the set, which to me feels like a better price for what you get here, but [as someone, like you, who is mostly in it for the buildable stuff, but appreciates minifigs], this really needed to have some more figures - I can kinda-sorta understand no Beast since he came in the CMF. But 3 others - Angel, Jubilee, and Nightcrawler seem like obvious choices to me. It seems like they mostly went with the animated series to inspire this build, and those characters were a definite part of that series.
    As an owner of some Friends sets - like most AFOLs, I'm not a huge fan of the mini dolls due to the lack of wrist articulation, individual leg articulation and the slightly unusual head shape - but man, whenever I see them - they are printed *so* well. It's like it's not even from the same company. Then I see the masked figures in this set and hang my head in shame at what TLG is doing for their premium product.
    There's another brick company you've reviewed a few sets from which has some quite different looking figures - not a fan of their legs and odd way their arms go - but it does seem like they know how to print them pretty well. I'd be curious if you ever got a set where a Lego minifig printing has not been done well, yet Company X is able to make a comparably sized figure look just fine with opacity - even if the fig looks weird, I'd love to see you call out the leading company in said review. :)
    It's too bad the GWP with this set couldn't be added on somehow [w/o destroying a room]. I'm glad they made an effort, but Cerebro not being the X door and instead in the lab, just looks odd to me. I am glad they included it, rather than just reward the first 100 people who stay up till midnight to buy the set and get the GWP, but honestly I do find it awkward that Cerebro is in the lab.
    Again, thanks for this review! You may not be a Marvel SuperFan or X-Men SuperFan, but you are a Lego SuperFan and as usual I highly appreciate these detailed, long-form reviews.

    It certainly would be nice to have larger interiors for more "realistic" displays.
    That would certainly require many more LEGO bricks and therefore be much more expensive.
    Is it hard to modify it and add more pieces to make them larger?

    Well that was an eye opener...especially the whole part about the "paper" bags. I was looking into possibly getting the X-mansion when it was announced, but for 30$ more, I could get the D&D set that was released back in April. I know LEGO's pricing is abysmal, but it just felt like I would get more stuff by spending 30 extra dollars (I mean, come on: you get like 650 extra pieces for that price jump. Sure, there are fewer figures, but I would like to think my point still stands. There are other examples out there, but I just recently purchased Red Dragon's Tale, so I'm a wee bit biased). I knew things were a little compact with this set, but the wiggliness of the x mansion does not fill me with confidence. Thanks for the review

    00:56 Yep. This is why I prefer stand alone builds, especially those that aren’t minifigure centred. I’ve made busts using helmet sets, upscaled bodies for helmet sets and fully proportional bodies for helmet sets as well as a few UCS style vehicles! Much more satisfying as an adult fan than minifigures, but that’s just me! 🤷🤣 32:30 Yep. Definitely should have had more minifigures at the very least- beast, night crawler, maybe a sabretooth and a mystique! A jubilee given it’s kinda based around the 97 show version! 🤷 Hell even an Archangel would’ve been easy enough to do given the pieces LEGO currently has in production! 🤷
