As someone in musical theatre i love your voice so so much as a break from all the big songs i hear and sing all the time. It’s so lovely and soft and warm. Of course voice lessons would help a lot with your straining and your lack of technique but your head-ish voice is just as lovely. Plus, your music is just made for it xx
this video is so important ive always had the opposite problem of gettin out of my chest/more talk-y range to higher notes!!! ur voice is lovely i love u
YES PLEASE!!! Tristan, I just discovered your channel a few days ago and one of my first thoughts was that you should review Dodie's voice! You are so insightful and encouraging I seriously think you would be the perfect coach for her!!
Yeah lol I heard the "shouting" and "pretty hard to" notes from Arms Unfolding. I actually wasn't trying to hear it but once I heard the shouting note I recognized it and remembered the video about the hidden song
I really liked your approach to this topic. You explained your weaknesses well without any self-deprecation. Idk if you'd be interested, but I'd love to see a little series of you taking voice lessons and seeing how you improve. My "belting" idol has to be Lea Michelle. That woman is friggin' incredible.
Why does she act like she’s awful?! She’s amazing and wonderful and I love all her flaws and her singing voice is amazing and singsong and makes me think of a hummingbird.
I did too. It took so long and just like dodie, whenever I would think I got something that sounded similar I would record it. I could probably make at least half an hour of me just being breathy and thinking it was my "mixed voice"
I found mine by accident! I was singing and for some reason i decided to try to impersonate the singer to see if that helped me hit her notes, and i slipped into the mixed voice! I hit the notes and got so excited that of course i lost it and it actually took me several tries to mimic howmit felt again. Over the next few weeks i would "find it" and "lose it" so much but i guess muscle memory kicked in eventually and its helped expand my range so much
Sonia Wysocka I found mine a year or two ago and I’ve been singing more and more and my range has been naturally growing. I can now sing much lower and much higher and my mixed is strong! I really want to take voice lessons though so I can have proper help
PSA to all: Dont strain yourself singing (push your voice) because you'll damage it. Focus on relaxing, breathing deep in your belly, opening your mouth, and sitting straight. After awhile, youll find power in good technique
Cunningsloth THANK YOU!!! I’ve been waiting for someone to comment this. If you push your voice too hard and don’t use good technique and support it is very possible that you may develop nodes and never be able to sing again! I just hope everyone is careful
I believe dodie's singing voice and mine are very alike cause every single time I'm hearing one of dodie's songs my mom asks if I'm singing, and I'm just like: I WISH pff
I don't sing a lot in front of people but I always sing along to her songs when I think no one's hearingland I'd take off the headphones and my family (that I did my realize was listening multiple times) always thinks that I'm singing when it's dodie and same as you all of could think was I wish so that's my little story of why I think I might have the same voice as dodie more or less. Also I tend to hear my voice harmonizing with almost every time without relizing it and I get super happy when I hear that it does
ESPECIALLY CAUSE I'VE LEARNED A FEW OF HER SONGS ON PIANO SO WHEN I'M LISTENING TO HER MY PARENTS THINK ITS ME LIKE SERIOUSLY I WISH I COULD SING AS GOOD AS HER
All singers on the radio sound the same and though I get that it's nice to have a strong voice I know nobody else who has such a soft and angelic and clear voice as you. You are so unique and special and I don't think i'd enjoy your music so much if you'd sound like everybody else.
Personally, I love your voice. I love how light and soft your sound is because it sounds so effortless and heavenly. I’m a vocal major at my school and I totally understand wanting a stronger voice, because let’s be honest, we all do; but I think it’s refreshing to hear and quieter sound since everyone seems to want to sing so forcefully nowadays. And every voice is different, which is the truely beautiful thing about singing. And you have a lot strengths that belters don’t, so don’t sell yourself short! (I’m the same exact way, but we all need to practice self-love and appreciate our own talent. ) 💜
vickyvidz don’t worry, those couple notes in between them is your passagio and everyone has them! different places for different people but think of your voice like a muscle! it has to be exercised healthily and practiced often :)
When you do vocal exercises try imagining all the sounds floating high above the bones of your palate. Do this with all the notes, the low ones and high ones.Try to make them sound clean and without air. This helps unify the sound. Then when you perform you can mix technics.
I'm so glad Dodie made this video because she explained what I've been trying to explain to my choir director for years lol. My voice always cracks around B flat (ish), and I always got so upset because my sister can belt like there is no tomorrow. So I ended up always singing songs sung by guys so I could belt and stay in my chest voice. But, after watching this I feel a lot better, like hey! I'm not the only one! I may go and try to sing some Dodie songs and listen to her voice to help me develop my head tone and chest voice.
I love how curious everyone is about voice here :) Just a quick warning: RUclips is sadly full of fake singing teachers that say they know what their doing but actually you will end up hurting your voice if you listen to them. So think and research before you listen to anyone and if possible get an actual singing teacher and talk to their former students first to see if they're actually good :)
This! Further to that, RUclips is filled with a lot of singers who do not practice proper technique and sing in very unhealthy ways and if these ways are copied will destroy one's vocal chords. It's painful to watch people idolize these people who don't know the first thing about proper technique (also this isn't about dodie, just a disclaimer in general).
I always used to think that singing was something you either could or couldn’t do but this was really inspirational. I want to work on my singing a lot now
I love your voice, not the power, not the range, just how it sounds and how it would make me feel certain emotions. With your soft voice and beautiful talent at making music and making deep lyrics. I hope you go far dodie. I'll gladly watch you
so I *am* an expert in singing and I've really noticed a dramatic improvement in your mix in the last few years. What I always tell my students with neighbours and roommates is just to find a time where you can practice for like 15 minutes a day. No neighbour or roommate will be bothered if you tell them "from 1pm to 1:15pm I'm gonna be screaming my head off, just so you know." Keep up the amazing work!!
I took voice lessons for YEARS. Belting is about support and placement meaning your breath and where you feel the vibration in your throat. I find when I get really high in my belt I feel it in back of the roof of my mouth almost. It should NEVER feel painful that’s a sign you’re possibly damaging something. Eventually it does become muscle memory. Then you can learn control which involves breath support as well and you can start to do all those Demi Lovato runs and riffs.
Hi, you sound like you know good stuff :) did you have to learn to belt, or were you always able to? And did you use a specific technique like Estill, or is it just focussing on the mix (which I think is a bit different to a conventional belt?). Lol I'm confused about this whole deal so any advice is so welcome! xxx
StickyLabel7 I was classically trained first. I’m a soprano 1 so I spent a lot of time in my head voice. It seemed to be the only thing my teachers cared about. I usually had to push to get them to let me sing different things. Also working on my own mostly . Classical training is a good place to start because when learning to do other things like belt you have the technical foundation under you so you won’t hurt yourself when learning.
Hi, thanks for replying! As fate would have it, I am actually classically trained - I've done grade 8! I'm mostly sop 2 area - what resources did you use to transition your voice to something more contemporary?
StickyLabel7 I was studying at an arts high school, so I was introduced to a lot more music and different styles of musical theatre specifically. And they were teaching us Musical Theatre voice rather than classical. So I watched a lot of different girls with different voices than me. I’ve also been kind of intuitive when it comes to how to imitate sound. So mostly I would practice the songs I heard others do in class until I was confident I was doing it properly and it wasn’t hurting me.
Lizzie K omg please dont be shy. I encourage you, get out of your comfort zone a bit. I was the same way and when I finally started singing everyone asked why i hid it for so long. If they're the right friends, they'll support you. ❤❤
I'll say the same thing for the third time - I was like that too! Make sure you're super prepared, but then just be brave, step out there and give it a go. It honestly won't be as bad as you think - and people will love you for your bravery too!
“i have the perfect voice for the kind of music i tend to write” which is ABSOLUTELY TRUE. i have that kind of ‘music theatre’ voice you referenced, where a lot of my sounds are mixed and belty, but i’ve ALWAYS wanted a sound like yours. and desperately try my best to imitate it in the car singing along to you. i guess it really does just go with the old proverb. want what you can’t have? grass is greener? i wonder.
hi! the key with vibrato and belting is in the soft palette. it’s the soft bit at the back of your throat (so when you yawn and you feel cold air that’s your soft palette). keeping it raised is really important to make your voice stronger and always stay in tune! try taking a ~shock~ breath in where you can feel that cold air in the back of your throat. hope this helps! xx
I actually am currently having this issue.... Belting kills me, and I'm half decent in a very middle range. But a song with a long range is literally gonna be murdering my vocal chords.
Dodieeee if you want singing lessons, I highly recommend learning to sing classical and operatic music. I know that's not what you write but oh my gosh does it help when it comes to singing anything. I've been having operatic and classical singing lessons 13 years now. Would recommend 💕
I always think I understand the difference between all of these voices but if you'd ask me to say which clip is which voice I'd probably be completely wrong
i love this bc a lot of things she says are so relatable to me like abt head/chest voice & finding mixed voice & preferring the soft voice. also learning new techniques bc i'm learning too & it's jus cool to see someone else on the same page :,)
I recognise the voice crack thingy so so much, I am working really hard on that middle voice but I can't quite pull it off yet... But I'll keep practicing!!
I love this video because it just shows the technical side of all dodie's videos and I just appreciate it so much because a good amount of RUclipsrs don't really talk about the technical side of their voices bUT DODIE DOES AND WOW HOW AMAZING
I've never really put much thought into your singing style or voices. It is just you that I like. To me, that is what makes you a great artist. Its your content and the way you deliver it as a person. To me, your delivery is personable, genuine, and very likable.
hi doddie, I was wondering if you could do a cover of birdy, wings. because someone who was very closed to me for about 10 years has recently passed away. and this songs reminds me so much of her and because I love you so much it would be wonderful if you were to sing. if so, thank you so much
dodie u are SO CRAZY TALENTED OMG, pleeeease do more of these videos related to singing skills bc i also wanna develop my voice so much more and this video made me a lot more hopeful since i'm seeing you, one of my biggest singing inspirations, talking about getting better and evolving, i would love to see more!!
I've been getting singing lessons for about 8 years, and it has honestly been the best decision of my life. it's so educational and it makes it sm easier to learn how your muscles work, how not to strain the voice, and to develop stronger registers. 10/10 would recommend
i feel as if i am in a very similar place vocally that you used to be, in fact everything you said about how you were when you started out, is me right now. i wish i could ask you for advice about how you managed to find a happy medium or just talk to you about it, but i think i’ll manage to find it one day, takes work! love you dodie thank you for this video, helped me realize there are other people with similar voices !!
going through all of your videos trying to spot your hidden words from Arms Unfolding you’re so creative and put so much effort into your work I love you
Hi Dodie, I hope this is helpful for you. I study music and major in singing at University. When you sing, try to imagine all your vowels like they are floating above the bones of your palate. The ee sound is closer to your teeth. The Uh sound is closer to the back of your mouth, near your throat, but they are all still above the bones of your palate. Never forget to imagine all the sounds floating above the bones of your palate. This is very useful. Singing is very mental and imaginative. Just imagine that when you're singing. And if you need to sing a very high note, open more your mouth to give that higher note more space, and imagine it floating even higher above your bones. The notes most sound very clean and without air while you practice. When you're performing it'll be easier to mix technics if you practiced what I'm telling you. I hope you read this and that it is helpful for you. I could send you some books about voice and technics if you want to :)
When you do vocal exercises try imagining all the sounds floating high above the bones of your palate. Do this with all the notes, the low ones and high ones.Try to make them sound clean and without air. This helps unify the sound. Then when you perform you can mix technics.
Also, when you breathe, inflate your thorax, and keep it this way while you sing sending the air from there and not from your throat. Try to imagine as your throat does't exist, specially when doing vocal exercises.
DODIE IM SO GLAD YOU’RE BACK AND SINGING! btw all your videos make me so happy and help me to forget all my stress/anxiety/depression and giving me some musical inspiration.

Why does she act like she’s awful?! She’s amazing and wonderful and I love all her flaws and her singing voice is amazing and singsong and makes me think of a hummingbird.
I know right? I'm such a big fan of her music.
So. Freaking. Relatable. I love my softer voice, but definitely wish I could have a stronger voice to belt out.

Ugh yeah and I'm not an expert of breathing
Okay firstly, mood and secondly, mood
But... HOW were you able to find the mixed voice ON YOUR OWN? That's *incredible* . Without singing lessons? Holy crap.

Lika YESSS QUEEN
what's the title of the song she's singing there?
it's amazing!
Silvi 3012 it's ariana grande's new song called "no tears left to cry" :)
@electra heart thank you so much :D
Look in the mirror
Your voice is honestly one of my ALL TIME FAVES. So unique and beaut
I love your voice, it's so warm and lovely. It sounds like when sitting by the window on a rainy day, under a blanket drinking a cuppa xx
I actually am currently having this issue.... Belting kills me, and I'm half decent in a very middle range. But a song with a long range is literally gonna be murdering my vocal chords.
With lessons you'd be unstoppable... the world is not ready for that amount of sheer power
i’d give up my left arm to see dodie yodelling
I loved the lil "shouting" part, but know that I know it's a part of an actual song I love it even more ♡
why is this the most relatable thing everrrrrr. I'm just awkwardly stuck between two voices while so many amazing singers have such powerful range
Dodieeee if you want singing lessons, I highly recommend learning to sing classical and operatic music. I know that's not what you write but oh my gosh does it help when it comes to singing anything. I've been having operatic and classical singing lessons 13 years now. Would recommend 💕

^^
It's a completely differnet technique though.... I wouldn't recommend it.
YOU SINGING ARI AT THE END YES
I'm loving your style and attitude lately, it's more mature. Lovely video Dodie. Your voice is beautiful!
Dodie, a singer: i’M nOt An ExPeRt In SiNgInG
There’s million people belting their hearts out. Your soft voice is what makes you unique and that’s why everyone loves you.
Love the editing in the mirror at the end ^^ Also, glad to see a bit more of you, I find everything you make amazing ! Much love
your voice often reminds me of audrey hepburn but with more vibrato and i think it's so pleasant to listen to x
For what it’s worth, I really love your soft voice. I love listening to your songs when I get anxious.
I recognise the voice crack thingy so so much, I am working really hard on that middle voice but I can't quite pull it off yet... But I'll keep practicing!!
DODIIIE the end was beautiful i'd love to hear you belt more :)) just go for it, you have it!!
“I’m not an expert in singing at all” whERE THO
dear toby I KNOW RIGHT
I love this video because it just shows the technical side of all dodie's videos and I just appreciate it so much because a good amount of RUclipsrs don't really talk about the technical side of their voices bUT DODIE DOES AND WOW HOW AMAZING
Honestly belting in your car is so amazing also LOVE YOUR VOICE IN ALL ITS FORMS
“SHOUTING” “PRETTY HARD TO” IM SO DEAD
Omg I need a full cover of No Tears Left to Cry, it sounded really good! (Even if you don't belt it)
DID ANYONE NOTICE DODIE IN THE MIRROR? 😍😍
wActHing kOAla freaked me out for a half second lol
YEAH! It was awesome, kind of like Mary Poppins
I've never really put much thought into your singing style or voices. It is just you that I like. To me, that is what makes you a great artist. Its your content and the way you deliver it as a person. To me, your delivery is personable, genuine, and very likable.
your mix sounds so damn good and even if your voice isn't the strongest, I still love and admire it so much
“It just would be nice if I could, y’know, *beautiful clear angelic note*”
hi doddie, I was wondering if you could do a cover of birdy, wings. because someone who was very closed to me for about 10 years has recently passed away. and this songs reminds me so much of her and because I love you so much it would be wonderful if you were to sing. if so, thank you so much
maybe spell her name right if you want her to do it?
*dodie makes reference to walmart yodelling kid and says she can yodel*
me: PLEASE DO COVER OF LOVE SICK BLUES ON UKULELE
dodie u are SO CRAZY TALENTED OMG, pleeeease do more of these videos related to singing skills bc i also wanna develop my voice so much more and this video made me a lot more hopeful since i'm seeing you, one of my biggest singing inspirations, talking about getting better and evolving, i would love to see more!!
I've been getting singing lessons for about 8 years, and it has honestly been the best decision of my life. it's so educational and it makes it sm easier to learn how your muscles work, how not to strain the voice, and to develop stronger registers. 10/10 would recommend
WHO'S WATCHING THIS AFTER KNOWING THE SECRET AHH
hi I relate
Lika hi I don't cause I can't sing
i feel as if i am in a very similar place vocally that you used to be, in fact everything you said about how you were when you started out, is me right now. i wish i could ask you for advice about how you managed to find a happy medium or just talk to you about it, but i think i’ll manage to find it one day, takes work! love you dodie thank you for this video, helped me realize there are other people with similar voices !!
omg i had this split and the yodel for so many years too and such a weak falsetto!!!!!
going through all of your videos trying to spot your hidden words from Arms Unfolding
you’re so creative and put so much effort into your work I love you
Hi Dodie, I hope this is helpful for you.
I will try this.
a legend.
guess whos back back back back again gain gain dodies back back back tell a friend
I just can’t sing😂💖
I love you
DODIE IM SO GLAD YOU’RE BACK AND SINGING! btw all your videos make me so happy and help me to forget all my stress/anxiety/depression and giving me some musical inspiration.
Finding your voice is so relatable. Took my at least a year to get my voice what it is. But defo have so far to go
