Printing tip: if you don't mind doing extra measurement when cutting, you should extend the color of the artwork a little bit past the edges of where you want to cut - that way, you don't have to cut excessive material to avoid having a little white sliver of uncolored paper at the edges.
Aw man i forgot to mention it, with a ruler i use a pencil to extend the edges

I kickstartered a game a while back called Silk that actually came in a cassette tape case & came on a USB drive shaped like a cassette tape.
Because it harkens back to old British 8-bit micros.
It's totally worth checking out on Switch or Steam; Idk if it's on the other two - I got mine for Switch. It just FEELS like a Switch game to me, but I can't say why.
You might dig it - it's kinda a slower-paced more methodical strategy game about the ancient silk road. You hire advisors and experts to help your caravan as you travel. And you obviously have to balance supplies and goods and animals (including animals to sacrifice at various temples to ensure success) and guards and money. You can be a trader, an explorer, a traveler, a warlord, or a combination of them. It feels like it's got a bit of Sid Meier's Pirates or Elite to it because of the completely open-ended gameplay paths.
I highly recommend getting the dust protectors for GB, GBC, and GBA games. It makes the games fit more snugly in the cassette cases so they don't rattle around.
Im not usually a fan of how reproduction cases look, but those boxes look really satisfying lined up on the shelf like that.
Yeah, it was a really genius brain solution that looks REALLY GOOD while also being an awesome solution to the problem of storage and display for handheld games WHILE ALSOALSO being a fun project to work on.

I didn't come up with this. The templates for game boy have been out there. I did come up with the NGPC and game gear templates. I wanted to make this video cause there really wasn't a good one out there. Glad you found it useful.

Very neat idea. Lots of boxes are long gone because they were paper and didn't had value back then. This way it looks cool, you can change the cover art with all kinds of things and best of all: doesn't need a lot of space. Great video!
This is great! This basically makes a portable game collection look amazing!
Note on the printing though:
Get actual photo paper when working with Inkjet printers. Other glossy papers tend to have severe color bleed when working with higher quality print settings and darker colors.
Duuuuude this is an incredible idea! Some of the games I get at a local game store come with a box but honestly this just seems so much better, might have to do this from now on, it looks so much cleaner. (Also what a collection, its beautiful and makes me a bit jealous even though I’ve got my own collection of consoles and games)
I've been doing the whole DS case thing for GBA but it always looked too cheap and rough. Might try this out

I’ve always stored all my gameboy games in this old camera bag and it’s awful, the rest of my collection is all neat on my shelves and a huge part of my collection and childhood has always just been hidden away, I’m definitely gonna have to do this it looks so neat!
Tip: you can put a foam inside the cassete and cut a hole on format of cartridge to put him in. Will be more secure and the cartridge will not shake inside
Absolutely amazing! Will definitely have to try this because I have so many GBA, Game Gear and Game Boy just sitting in a drawer inside a “really useful box” and I hate it. I purchased a old wooden CD storage tower and they work great for DS and 3DS so having a Cassette tower would go great with it. Btw do you have games for GBA or GB that have the protective cases on them? You mentioned the Wonder Swan ones don’t fit but was wonder if GBA does since it’s a tad bit smaller? Anyways great content, always happy to see the portable console love out there!

for the rumble pak games, ive seen where people use the cases camcorder mini dv or dvc tapes come in. they're similar in size to a cassette tape but a little thicker so they rumble pak will fit
I really enjoyed that and started a Gameboy collection with my GameCube am going to try and do that printer will set me back and I do t have a computer so think eBay for the artwork be my best bet

Heya, I was following your video but I decided to redo my own border from scratch while following your basic structure and I'm really happy with how it turned out! I e done this with my GBA and and Gameboy games. I snip both pegs and use craft foam to fill the case and slip the game between the foam. Makes a snug fit

I think it would be cool to get some foam inserts that fit exactly in a cassette case and has a spot for your game (game boy gba etc). that way everything is nice and snug and nothing is wiggling around, and it looks nice when you open it

Yeah I certainly don't make it from ad revenue yet lol! My extended family is very generous and I go to retro game stores often. If you wanna build up a collection, you have to learn the market, look out for a good deal, find stuff you're interested in, and just have a fun time doing it! Interesting method that I'd use if I had an actual collection. Not bad.
EDIT: I'd also recommend looking at the Launchbox Database, they usually have some good quality pictures of boxarts, and ripping the images out of their site is kinda easy with inspect element.
Yes! I do that all the time. I didn't wanna mention it cause if they see they could get rid of it. I do have a launchbox forever license so it's not like I'm not paying them.
These look fantastic but you forgot the best bit- uniform sizes and small boxes mean you can display more games and you can display them better!
Get a cassette tape rack and it would look 100 times better.
Edit: Also a 3D Printed insert to hold the games in place would be fantastic!

GBA SP was mine, most of my memories with a leapster are sitting in the waiting room at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital playing the too-good spongebob game. The later leapster could go online but I didn't have that one. Any time I see a RUclips channel play leapster it's just Sonic X.
@@GoldenPickaxe I had the leapster 2 I think. I remember playing some drawing game about a pencil. I also had this cart called kindergarten but by kindergarten I already had a 3ds. There was also this virtual pet game and iSpy.

I just ask because I know that when I was a kid, any kind of feedback that wasn't positive on things like this that I came up with would completely take the wind out of my sails, which absolutely I do not want to do, WHATSOEVER.

@@Amiiben Cool. So, you mentioned that you've made repro covers and labels and stuff for your own games.
Does it indicate anywhere that those are repros?
It makes sense that you want your own games to look good & you'd never try to sell those to somebody as genuine, but I'd strongly encourage you to at least come up with a like "end of life plan" for your repro covers.
The idea being, sure you'll never claim they're genuine & when eventually you get rid of them, you'll be clear that they're repros, but what about the person who buys them?
The retro gaming community is full of scumbags, so what's to stop them from turning around & selling them as genuine? Especially if they're good repros, which it looks like they are.
Or, heaven forbid, what if you get abducted by aliens? There would be nobody to say which ones are repros, so those ones may well get out in the wild looking like the real deal when they aren't.
8-Bit Guy made a video a few years ago walking through how he made some actual repro labels for actual cartridges, and this is what Pat & Ian had to say about it, which I think explains it potentially better than I can: ruclips.net/video/6TtqcCIbZi4/видео.html
Again, please don't take this as any kind of "you suck" or "you suck at this" at all. I love the cassette tape case idea - in part because there's no way any collector would think it's a genuine case for the handheld games. I'm surprised I've never heard of it before. Plus, like I said, I dig your videos & how you do history & research & look at stuff I've never seen or thought about (like the Tetris collab, the Rockola video, and the pool mini-series.)
Maybe make this video private & re-upload with taking out that one line about making your own repro covers and labels? (Don't delete videos you've uploaded, cuz that makes youtube see a sudden drop in your views & other engagement, and the algorithm punishes that.) But please, it's your channel, do what you want - I'm not going anywhere.
@@EmeraldLavigne yeah I get where you're coming from, but the repro I showed off in this video is of "street fighter zero 3" on saturn, a game that's nearly 400 bucks. In that jewel case is just a generic cdr I burned cause that game is really expensive. No game store would take that in, and I wouldn't be able to sell that on eBay, one because I would never scam someone, and two, someone in the market for that game would see that the disc is a verbatim cdr with sharpie on it. I do appreciate that you're looking out for this stuff. I have seen my fair share of cons in the retro scene but yeah. That burned cd is just for me to play the game.

I honestly don't see a problem with individual collectors doing whatever they want with their individual collections - that's kinda the point of collecting, for it to be yours. The question of what happens next, because there will eventually be a who's next is just the important part for collectors to keep in mind, imo.
Thanks for being open to feedback on something that I foresaw might be an issue that you possibly may not have considered.

Definitely more expensive and kinda defeating the purpose of this DIY, but if you're lazy there's a ton of these being sold on Etsy for around $10, and quite a few of them also do 3D printed inserts to clip your game into so they aren't just floating around loosely in the cassette case. Of course you could probably search up the design and make your own 3D printed inserts for them, and then follow this tutorial, but again, maybe you're lazy and don't mind spending an extra ten bucks on each game for cool cases like this
Destroying cassette cases should be illegal. They should be considered a protected endangered species.
