After tryouts in Seattle, Washington and four weeks of previews, the musical opened on Broadway on November 8, 2007 to mixed reviews. The Broadway production closed on January 4, 2009 after 30 previews and 484 performances. It's a very old stage trick. The rope is connected by a hook hidden by the knot to a harness around his chest under his clothing. When the lever is pulled the force is transferred into the harness instead of the neck, ensuring that no damage is done to the actor.

There's actually no harness here-using that method is against AEA rules, as if something goes wrong you may actually hang the actor. Here he has a platform a foot or so under the trap door, so he essentially just steps down, and then bends over, to make the rope taught. If he were to stand up, the rope would be loose-notice how he bends down?
