I have an old household oven I bought that I am going to use starting out, but your hole youi use as aa view window gave me an idea, when I build my larger oven.. I am going to take the glass door off an oven and some oven lights so I can see directly inside.
Thanks for the kind words! I would say go for it. We started doing all of this really not knowing the right and the wrongs until we started practicing. So get a nice starter gun and try it out! Eastwood makes a cheap gun setup and it’s perfect for beginners that are just starting out!
It all depends on what you are powder coating. Usually we like to use the welding wire as a "hook". We try to make the hook larger so it doesn't cover the outside where it needs to be coated. We like to place a hook where we know a bolt or a washer will be going in that place just incase it needs to be covered up. If you have a bolt hole, you could throw a bolt in and use two nuts to clamp the welding wire in that as well. Just make sure you put some high temp tape or Teflon tape on both sides of the bolt shaft so you bolt doesn't get powder coated and gets stuck in the part. We are in the making of creating a Q&A video on everyone's comments on the powder coat oven and the how to coat video. I would say in the next month or so that video will be out! Nice work! Pretty much exactly how I started out as well. If you plan on powder coating often consider a simple booth. Your nice and clean shop will soon be covered with powder like mine lol

But, its funny you say that because if we are working with a bright color you can see it everywhere like a dust covering lol That's why usually we tarp over things that we don't want to get dusted. Maybe we need to create a area with drop tarp walls with sliders where we can enclose our selves in it! That sounds like a fun DIY build haha

I started with a 3 sided small budget booth made of pvc and clear wrap but that wasn’t much fun moving around it was pretty flimsy. Even a simple booth with box fans and furnace filters would be sufficient for the amount of powder coming out of the Eastwood unit.
Excellent video and a very thorough explanation, 2nd great video of yours I've watched today I have subscribed to you guys.😁 So here's a question for you guys: I'm a metal polisher of almost 30 years in the UK btw, old alloy/aluminium parts can sweat a lot after polishing (friction = heat causes the sweating), so how do you deal with older contaminated castings in particular sweating during the curing process? Or do you preheat and cool off before powder coating to prevent gassing out?
Thanks for checking out the video! The biggest thing we have to deal with parts getting corroded after getting sand blasted. We try to sand blast our parts as close as the date we want to powder coat so it would limit the chance of corrosion. But, with living in Maryland there is a lot of humidity. I know we make sure before we start the powder coat process we visually check to make everything is clean and no corrosion and then right before we coat we acetone every surface. I know for when we do bike frames we do like to put the frame into the oven for a short period to burn junk off of the frame and to heat up the metal for the powder to stick easier to the tight corners.
@@alwayssomethinggarage794 Thanks for the reply, makes sense to get the freshly blasted parts coated asap especially in a humid environment. I have just seen a video by Bullseye powder coating and they said they acid etch prime corroded aluminium before powder coating to prevent the nasties locked inside the metal peeling up the powder coat from underneath. I'd imagine they cook it first to let most of the gasses out then acid etch as a precaution to stabilize it. you should check prepreg carbon fiber. since you already have the oven, you could probably make parts with prepreg.

What psi do you use for the gun
We use low PSI. Try a bunch of tests on the gun and find the best PSI that works for your gun. I believe we are around 5-10 pounds.

He said the elements are 3,300 Watts so at 240V they would draw 13.75 Amps each. The whole rig would draw around 42 amps.

So is the silicon tape used to cover things such as threads? or something that you don’t want Powder Coated?
Yes it should be heat resistant too
