In the health space, we hear the term ultra-processed foods thrown around often for its clear link to chronic diseases such as depression, Alzheimer’s, and diabesity. But what exactly does “ultra-processed” mean? How can you tell if a food is ultra-processed?
In today’s Health Bites episode, we will learn exactly what ultra-processed foods are, how to identify them, their impact on human health, and the global economy. We’ll also discuss tips and tricks for how to read food labels to better navigate the grocery store, and the innovations happening in Washington to develop label laws that helps protect the consumer.
    In this episode, I discuss:
Definition, examples, and deceptive health claims of ultra-processed food (2:06)
Health risks and impacts of ultra-processed food (7:30)
Case study: impact of an ultra-processed diet on twin girls (10:00)
History and rise of processed food (12:09)
Difference between ultra-processed and minimally processed foods (17:45)
Impact of food packaging and additives on health (24:01)
Economic and societal consequences of chronic diseases caused by poor diet (28:04)
Identifying ultra-processed foods and understanding food labeling (35:00)
Avoiding ultra-processed foods and using food scoring systems (40:50)

I cut all ultra processed foods. Went under the care of functional medicine drs and naturopath nutritionist. I lost 100 lbs. I have 20-30 more to my goal. I am 58 years old. Told I’d never lose weight post menopause. I feel 100% better. Our food is poison. I’m happy for videos like this. Im proof it works

Change all that crop land to grazing lands for ruminant animals (expensive change but necessary). Imagine, glyphosate and other insecticides and pesticides no longer needed because grasslands don’t need it. They just need grazing and rotation. The animals do all the fertilization by eating, pooping, and incorporating all those nutrients back into the soil with their hooves.

This is enlightening. If people would just pay attention to it and stop buying and eating these foods. The US should be ashamed for allowing companies to make these foods and then target our children. I am so picky about what I buy and eat. I try to eat a minimum of foods and buy from minimum companies. I will not simply just go to the store, see something that looks good and buy it. I read all the labels; stick to the outer aisles at the supermarket or order online. I love Thrive Market and buy from the often. I am getting my garden going; ready for those fresh veggies from my backyard. Thanks Dr. Hyman!! Love watching your videos and reading your emails.

Back in 2012, I saw Dr. Hyman on his PBS special, read the Ultramind Solution and a decided to switch to a whole foods diet. I had been into health and fitness sine I was 12 years old, but my understanding of diet was based on the ridiculous, old food pyramid. I cut sugar off slowly, started juicing and switched to the Ultramind diet. I was a mess for a month! I was tired, my hair looked dry and my skin turned what I can only describe as gray on some days. That's how poisoned by a bad diet my body was, and again, I had eaten relatively healthy since I was young. It was an intense cleansing but when the poison leaves your system, it is the best feeling you can imagine. I have never looked back. My mental fog disappeared and the sudden sadness I'd randomly feel went away. I felt nimble, energetic, mentally and physically sharp and lost a lot of weight. Highly recommended!

There are no farm raised sardines. Only salmon, trout and sturgeon are farmed as they are high cost products.
Here in Europe, they are cheap ( sardines) and caught daily.
Tilapia, tuna and basa are the worst fish to eat, watch how they produce tilapia............💩

My dad told me decades ago that all these processed foods were nothing more then chemicals, FastFood, most frozen foods, like tv dinners, microwave foods, at the time I laughed it off, but now as an older adult I realize just how right he was, , the problem is that we are literally surrounded by processed foods, it's difficult to find healthy real foods these days, even can goods and fresh produce are highly processed with chemicals, it's no wonder cancer and obesity rates are so high nowadays

About 18 mo ago, as I was preparing my breakfast a 'thought' popped into my head that 'said clean food only'. Certain that it was God talking to me, I have been eating clean food since then. I immediately lost 20 lb. It took me a good year to gain back the 10 that I thought I needed.
Thanks for this excellent information. You are in good company!

Well fats and proteins are also used for different things in your body, not only energy. If I remember correctly about 30% of the calories you eat in fats and proteins are being used for muscles, to create hormones, for your skin, hair etc. Carbohydrates are just energy and nothing else so in the end a calorie isnt a calorie in your body, it differs.

I read everything and fast food is cooking with such bad oil. It s really hard to stay on a good program….but the pros are so amazing. Good luck

    Out of curiosity:
Do you think that one day we'll have warning labels on ultra processed "food"? What about a future where the UPF is segregated? What would that look like, would those items be in their own grocery store isle? Similar to cigarettes, would UPF be served by a clerk who would be tasked w/ making certain that no one under 18 years of age tried to buy any of that poisonous UP "food"? =^.^=

I hope he starts saying this correct, bc for ex ppl
Think fruit is a killer or makes them fat bc of this misspeaking .

The Sisyphesian task is that food companies make their dollars by using cheap commodity ingredients into crappy stuff designed to make us all love and crave. You have to hit them in the pocketbook. Thankfully I grew up on real food and have fed my family same. We pay for this in the ever increasing health insurance premiums driven by increasing medical costs from the epidemic of the sister chronic conditions that are part of metabolic disease. It is a systemic health, economic and public policy issue combined. I don’t see that it will get better under our current approaches. At the very least making better choices for ourselves and our families is controllable by us.

We need an actual guide with labelling examples of UPF disguised as 'normal' processed foods. I cannot find a reasonably priced tin of coconut milk in the UK that does not contain xantham gum. I have changed to using coconut blocks which I dissolve myself in hot water. Tinned tomatoes contain 40% citric acid. Biona and Mr Organic tomatoes are the only two brands I can find that contain just tomatoes.
Until consumers stop buying products that contain hidden extra ingredients, the markets and products won't change.
