The 997. 1 the last analogue Porsche, all these mappable digital car coming out of Germany all sound synthetic and with loads of bhp. Speed is not important rather engine characteristics, drive and distinctive engine sound all take priority over bhp / speed. I love to drive a car and all these digital cars all computer aided that helps the driver. This 997 is the golden nugget of the Porsche mainly the naturally aspirated engines, reminds me of the beauty of the mechanical watch over a Quartz watch.
I love this channel especially as I am one of the lucky (and smart) US car guys to own a Lotus 111R. My previous car was a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo which I had for 32 years and Porsche was my brand. Now I doubt you could give me one. The last true Porsche was the 993.

I'm a proud owner of a 2008 997.1 Turbo and I love the car. It's the last in the line of the Hans Mezger incredible 3.6L engines. In 2009 they went to a completely new design in a 3.8L engine... I recently had the opportunity to drive the 991 Turbo at a local dealer. While it's a spectacular car with a massive leap in technology, design, and comfort it felt way to big to be a 911. I didn't fully realize the size difference until I got back into my own car for the drive home. Of course I'd take a 991 if given to me, but I will gladly stick with my 997 with the hope that it appreciates in value over the next 10 years as many are predicting.
@@gabillionaireMany people consider the 997.2 as the sweet spot of the modern 911. Given the choice and the budget I’d go for a later model 997.2. The did a rear facia change starting in 2009 which much needed as the previous version went all the way back to around 2000 and the 996. Plus the 997.2 got PDK which is light years better than the Tiptronic of which I owned several. The 997.2 was also only around for two model years as the 991.1 came out in 2011. If you can find a 2010 997.2 in any model (Turbo always preferred by me) you will be very happy. They’re small, nimble, very fast, and very dependable. Good hunting!
Favourite 911 is the 996 and doesn’t like the 992. Sadly, the 991 and beyond hold no appeal for me whatsoever. I also harbor a real appreciation for Lotus cars, but could not live with the reliability and build quality issues. Keep real.

Upgraded clutch, e88 package or 997.2 ic, a tasty big diameter exhaust and a esmotor tune et voilá, reliable monster. Pin the coolant lines, put some extra torque on the cam bolts and expensive problems should be none.
Agree on the GT3 comment: always wanted a GT3. Eventually drove one (997.1 GT3) and compared to my 997 2S the reluctant gearbox, light steering and pedal weighting was underwhelming...
Currently, 650+ likes from Turbo owners and 24 dislikes from GT3 owners. ;) In the USA they only made 226 (+/-) 2009 997.1 Turbo 911s that are coupe and 6-spd. I'll hold onto mine.
Awesome video Jay!! I would love to see a comparison video of the 997.1 C4s vs 997.2 C4s also a 997.2 C4s vs 997.1 Turbo. Can’t seem to find anything on RUclips comparing those models directly..
Always disliked the wheels on these. I am a big fan of the 'lobster claws', though (had no idea they were called that). Oh, and the exhaust tips - never liked those (keep 'em round I say - this new fad is just yeeeuch). But those really are the most minor criticisms of what is such a desirable car.
At least the exhausts are real. Integrating the tips into the bumper instead of hanging them underneath is actually technically difficult and the reason why so many cars these days have fake tips with the real exhaust inside. Not so here
I own a 997.1 turbo 6MT in guards red. I pretty much agree with all that is said in this video...except (no offense) your affinity for lobster claw wheels 😂
My problem w Porsche’s and including 996 isn’t the gear shift and needing a short shifter. It’s that the clutch pedal has to travel from here to Kentucky to release. That slows shifts more than anything on these cars
I drove a 996 twin turbo for 13 years. You have driven a car until you've driven a Porsche Twin Turbo. Like flying an F-18 Hornet on wheels I used to say.
I watched this video because I always loved the 997 turbo S, currently considering buying one or the 991 but still looking at the prices, taxes, enjoyment factor. Thanks for the video, you made me laugh when you described yourself as a Tar...
you're very right Jay, the 997 GT3 gearbox can be reluctant, it almost makes the driver wonder if rushing a gear through is going to damage the synchros. It won't but I think it's a gearbox that probably takes serveral thousands of miles to fully bed in. The 997T is a great car, for looks I would just lower it a 10-15mm and put a duck-tail. The std liftable wing is just a bit lukewarm. And the side vents (also with the GT2) look a bit ugly IMO. Other than that it's an ace car and anyone should pick one up while they can.
Was just watching your other video on Patreon about dealers politely screwing around on customers, and the over-valuation of Porschae in general. As an owner ("the pricks are on the inside!"), I think there's no one I'd like to hear more from on this topic of Porsche and what's really on. I'd like to see you get your hands on the e-hybrid twin turbo performance variant Panamera as well as the Taycan but I tend to agree the 997 are the last I really see myself in.
I have a 992 C4S and must say I agree with your comments, i am a little underwhelmed by it as does not give me the driving thrill I had hoped for. Thinking of changing for a 2016 Boxster Spyder or grovelling to try to get a 718 Boxster Spyder allocation but highly unlikely. Interested in your opinion on the best Porsche model as a enjoyable replacement excluding GT3s.
I think the exhaust on this car is not stock, it´s a smooth modification and not straight into the face, it´s sound a bit like "luftgekühlt" in the mid and lower rev´s. Can you please tell me who made this exhaust?
Yeess maaate - that’s the 911 review we’ve been waiting for. Now you need to review one with a couple of mods thrown at it... 600hp is an utter barrel of laughs in one of these!
mod it and make it worse, delude yourself in process you made it better until 2-3 yrs later you put it back to stock and discover that was best after all. Plenty of basic maintenance to spend your money on as hoses and bushes have to be replaced
Nonsense... The stock 997 Turbo exhaust is too quiet, and the chassis + drivetrain are more than capable of handling an additional 120+ hp without in any way sacrificing comfort or changing the character of the car for the worse. A few well chosen engine mods will not only add torque & power, but will even drop the boost threshold RPM, making for a more driveable car in day-to-day conditions.
Many a car guy, Matt Farah for example, have commented on mods that were not improvements. Exhaust, I understand. I ordered the Fister modification ( PSE in permanent mode) for my 996.1 and at first I regretted it although after 6 months I loved the extra sound at 3k although hearing the variocam at 5k was harder. I’ve seen more 911 Turbos made worse than improved though. Admittedly, I am not a Turbo fan as the launch into Hyperspace tends to overshadow all the other virtues of the 911
@jayemm great video as always. Question for you. I live in Switzerland where sadly those cars are now much more expensive than in the UK... close to 100k chf for a nice 997.1 turbo manual with lowish miles. Im considering one or a 997.2 4s pdk which for a similar spec would cost 20k chf less than the 997.1 turbo manual. The car would be used as a daily and i wonder if in your opinion the 997.1 turbo is really worth 20k more than a 997.2 4s pdk? Even if i love the turbo it seems like a lot for an older car and power that i wouldnt really use on the street... anyone any comments?
Hi, I bought a low milage 997 Turbo, MK1, manual, a few years ago - just for the sake of it. A very complete car: One of the best-looking of the 911 series, can be driven all year round and here in Germany you can also aim for top speed from time to time. But only here. I am not sure, but I guess I would not buy the 997 Turbo again. For Switzerland, as a daily driver and occasional Sunday morning blast through the countryside, the 4S is great. A beautiful car, good sound, real 911. Go for it.
If you like the Metzger engine, you want the 2009 911 Turbo. The reason? MY2009 was the only year that the 997.2 had this engine so you get the updated interior and you still have this engine. BTW, a manual 2009 911 Turbo is in the $70-80,000 range in the US the last time I checked. But a manual F430 is in an altogether different zip code. Saw a nice one go for close to $200,000 at an auction just in the past month. It did have really low miles, but still a LOT of money for a 15 year old car!
SenszR Do some research. The 997.2 was more than the usual mid-cycle refresh. With the introduction of the 997.2 in 2009, PDK was first offered and a new direct injection engine (DFI) was introduced as well as interior updates with Bluetooth and hard drive navigation. The 2009 turbo, however, did not get the new engine until the following year (2010).
You did not note that the 996 turbo is not plagued by the IMS issues of the other 996 911s. But I still long for a regular non turbo 996. Its just $2,500 shy of perfection which is about what the repair costs. Obviously I am not counting any of the air cooled 911s because those prices are for the rich and famous at this point. I don't care for the appearance of the 997.1 turbo in this video, not sure why but I don't even like the interior compared to the 996...I just find the headlights boring on the 997 unless its a gt version of the car with the longer front end

The 997 turbo gen 1.5 is absolutely nuts👀. My best friend has one and it's amazing. If I had the money, I would buy one... But I have a 997 c2s and it's plenty already so... 🥳
“I am a tart” - JayEmm, I love this channel
Cheers Lloyd
Didn’t see it coming 😂
What is a tart?
Had a 911 turbo and though it was blistering fast, as an experience it was totally souless.
Now have a V8 Vantage, much slower, but far more of an experience to drive.
The 911 is a very usable everyday car, and I think that's what counts against it a little and takes away from it being truly special.
Lovely cars the Vantage
I love my Turbo. I don't need to stand out and engine noise is not bad for my 991.2. I like to drive and I love the performance. But everyone has their thing.
One of the great things re. the Turbo is a few mods can change the character to more of a scary/exciting weekend toy. Overall I agree with you about the passion factor though - 997 Turbo is more of a sleeper street GT for sure vs a raw edgy sportscar. Astons are a lifelong fave of mine as well and I wish I had budget & space...
The 997. 1 the last analogue Porsche, all these mappable digital car coming out of Germany all sound synthetic and with loads of bhp.
997.1 or .2 (prefer the 997.1 for looks) will be a classic soon. Get one if while it’s still attainable. It’s the last analog classic look and feel.
great review. And definitely a good point, in the real world the turbo is faster and more fun than the gt3 until you get to the track of course.
I love this channel especially as I am one of the lucky (and smart) US car guys to own a Lotus 111R. My previous car was a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo which I had for 32 years and Porsche was my brand. Now I doubt you could give me one. The last true Porsche was the 993.
Dude you drive tin cane with Toyota camary engine.
@@moneyparhar Dude, The EVORA has a Camry (learn to spell and capitalize) engine. The Elise has a Celica GTS base motor, a Yamaha racing head and Lotus ECU. Bulletproof. If you doubt its lineage then you know not about engines or World Rally. Weighs less than 2000 lbs.And that would be an aluminium monocoque. Advice to you: Stick with Uber.
"The last true Porsche was the 993"
Everything was better in my day, young'un...
Dave, that's an aluminium chassis with composite panels - no monocoque
@@ian_987 I may be older than you.
Is the 997.1 better than 997.2 in your opinion? I'm looking to buy either one. Thank you.
@@occultustactical6138 thank you for your tips and advice! Much appreciated
Favourite 911 is the 996 and doesn’t like the 992. Sounds a little controversial to me, but apart from that a good little review, I think a 997 ( non S ) with a Manual box will be bargain of the century in the next couple of years and worth a fortune in 15 years plus times 👍🏻 I’ll take any 911 please !!
Excellent review as I've come to expect. Font of knowledge!
I've become a fan of yours, and subscribed, since seeing your 992 review, and accompanying explanation on Rennlist. #Truth I loved my 2003 996.2 which I drove to 96,610 miles before selling to my best friend, and will never, ever sell my 997.2 GTS. Sadly, the 991 and beyond hold no appeal for me whatsoever. I also harbor a real appreciation for Lotus cars, but could not live with the reliability and build quality issues. Keep real.
Thanks Thomas
I have 997.1 C4s and my brother has a 997.1 turbo
Both cars are insane but the turbo takes it up a notch .... nonetheless, I still think my C4s is a beast
Best all around car, ever, the 997tt.
Great to see your comments while out in my favourite Porsche
Upgraded clutch, e88 package or 997.2 ic, a tasty big diameter exhaust and a esmotor tune et voilá, reliable monster. Pin the coolant lines, put some extra torque on the cam bolts and expensive problems should be none.
Agree on the GT3 comment: always wanted a GT3. Eventually drove one (997.1 GT3) and compared to my 997 2S the reluctant gearbox, light steering and pedal weighting was underwhelming...
Good point about the wheels. I've got 997 Turbo wheels on my 987!
993 turbo is my favourite, 997 second best. 964 flat nose is quite nice.
Best looking and still my fave 911 is the Porsche 964 preferably a 5-speed Turbo in Black or Red BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
Saving to buy one of these, can’t wait!!
One notable upgrade on the 997 is the electronic AWD. 996s had a mechanical diff.
Technically the 996s is a viscous ( fluid) coupling, with no mechanical connection between driveshaft and front diff.
Been tempted by one of these for a few yrs now. Have to be a manual - nice bit of mid corner breaking made the edit 😳
Currently, 650+ likes from Turbo owners and 24 dislikes from GT3 owners. ;)
In the USA they only made 226 (+/-) 2009 997.1 Turbo 911s that are coupe and 6-spd. I'll hold onto mine.
That is my favourite 911 turbo model.
Thanks for the review. Am looking at buying one myself.
Actually like the 911 Turbo 👍🤪
Especially the 997 ☝️
Awesome video Jay!! I would love to see a comparison video of the 997.1 C4s vs 997.2 C4s also a 997.2 C4s vs 997.1 Turbo. Can’t seem to find anything on RUclips comparing those models directly..
Great review JayEmm. This may be my next Porsche - in the spring.
A future classic with unlimited power potential
Great video, always a fresh and nuanced view of cars, while lots of other reviewers resort to cliches.
British country roads give me such high anxiety haha.. great review!
Julian Evans I know what you mean about the wheels. When they found themselves on other 911’s... 😩
I agree with that man.
@t c Yes, I'm sure I'd struggle through somehow.
At least the exhausts are real. Integrating the tips into the bumper instead of hanging them underneath is actually technically difficult and the reason why so many cars these days have fake tips with the real exhaust inside. Not so here
Last of the Mezger engined turbos.
I own a 997.1 turbo 6MT in guards red. I pretty much agree with all that is said in this video...except (no offense) your affinity for lobster claw wheels 😂
Thanks James JayEmm i love this car deffo worth the money
My problem w Porsche’s and including 996 isn’t the gear shift and needing a short shifter. It’s that the clutch pedal has to travel from here to Kentucky to release. That slows shifts more than anything on these cars
Not at all in my 964 😊
@@claudiomarangone614 good to know. I’ll try one. Been searching ads for a 964 convertible.
That’s fixable. I converted 997.1 turbo to the GT2 style setup. Problem solved!
Mate you are the 996 spokesman of the year 😄
I drove a 996 twin turbo for 13 years.
You have driven a car until you've driven a Porsche Twin Turbo.
Like flying an F-18 Hornet on wheels I used to say.
Good review, got a 997 gen 1.5 manual, no plans to sell anytime soon
Braking mid corner??!
Great review. Love the level of detail. You know your 911s!
Yeah that was me driving it for James to do the fly bys. That corner is a bit deceptive and went in a bit hot..
Numeric cables and short shifter cure all 997 gearbox issues save for a stiff 1st gear in the cold.
480bhp is a massive amount of power in the real world. Its more than enough on any public road.
As always, very honest and thorough review. You recommend the short shifter, GT3 version, on this 997, correct?
Was just watching your other video on Patreon about dealers politely screwing around on customers, and the over-valuation of Porschae in general. As an owner ("the pricks are on the inside!"), I think there's no one I'd like to hear more from on this topic of Porsche and what's really on. I'd like to see you get your hands on the e-hybrid twin turbo performance variant Panamera as well as the Taycan but I tend to agree the 997 are the last I really see myself in.
Porsche's sales strategy is baffling. Annoy potential customers and continually sell to flippers.
991.2 GTS, but not if you drive bad roads a lot
@@JayEmmOnCars 991.2 GTS or 997.1 Turbo manual?
I'm a tart too 😂👍
When I pushed the like-button it went from 996 to 997. Coincidence? :-)
Lobster Fork not claw but people have been mistaken for so long that claw is now the new norm........
Admittedly, I am not a Turbo fan as the launch into Hyperspace tends to overshadow all the other virtues of the 911
You're going to wear out that road soon. 😁 Great review!
Really? Where did you find that out?
SenszR
Do some research.
The 997.2 turbo also has a different front diff offering a more rear wheel bias.
Claude Dickson I’m just asking where you got that info because I can’t find it anywhere.
Today... 997.1 sticks are 65-80K. A 997.2 stick is 95-110K .....
Trivia question - so which one is better 997 turbo or GT-R?
Good and honest review! This 997.1 Turbo Manual....with the last Mezger engine is a peach, you just have to live with the ugly 996 rear lights!!
Or you swap them with the 997.2 version and also change the rear bumper in the process ;)
Meh, 996.2 Turbo and 997.1 Turbo are the best 911s in existence.
996 fave generation, go on my son!..
Wow wish I had a road like that near me!
Yaassss thank you for that review!
Well done on this. Sounds like there is a 911 for everyone.
A fantastic looking car, great review
On point as per 💯🤛🏿
Excellent review.
I love the 2008 911 Turbo due to the updated infotainment system but retained the older engine.
Perfect car!
8:52 it does torque to you 😂
