LOVE MY CRAZY SHIRTS?
I'm a 911 fan, through and though - but my last experience of a turbo-powered Porsche was very disappointing. I drove the brand new 992, and it left me thoroughly cold. Today I'm driving a decade old 911 "Turbo" - from the first generation of 997. The old 996 turbo I couldn't fall in love with, but is this any better?

Dude is a less expensive version of Jeremy Clarkson! His comfortable talking, vocal rhythm while driving is impressive! I don’t know if he’s doing this as hobby or is his profession…either way I’m impressed
James' 992 review is the best I've seen - someone actually criticising a new Porsche. Unheard of.
Yes too right
Definitely.
He didn't criticize, he just mentioned that the 997 has an oldschool feeling? that the 991 and maybe the 992 has not

Now hes probably band from buying thier special cars!!!!! :^(
What a down-to-earth no bullshit likeable fellow this man is! He doesn't kiss ass to certain manufacturers. I want to see him achieve all goals in life 👍 👍 👍
Sit back and relax everyone... and watch those go up in value.
agree, I wanna wait another year or two before I jump into one, but I have a felling they are going to get more expensive! Had 996 Turbo 6spd, not sure why I did not move up! when i had a chance !
lol. Still waiting! Hopefully in a couple more years.
997 turbo i think it's the last 911 with “911 appeal“ and it's so beautiful it keeps the simple traditional lines and at the same times the shadow to future innovation, one of the top cars ever...
The 997.1 Turbo Manual is such a peach of a car. I loved mine, its one i miss a lot. Nicely tune-able too
Gday mate. Im looking at buying one when i get to the UK. Were the servicings decently priced and was the car reliable?
@@kingy23king17 very reasonable services, a minor was about £300!!
Porsche do a good modern classic deal or plenty of independents about
Again mine was dead reliable
@@andyran yeah okay. Well thanks. Very keen.
I remember when the last "Old School 911" was the 993 because it was the last air cooled, then the 964 because it has much of the "classic" body shell, then the 3.2 carrerra because it was the last 911 with a genuine link to the 1960's cars.
This is a future classic 💥
Ah the 997 turbo - my favourite! Some cat had one with TechArt wheels on it where I worked. Wunderbar!
Great insights and way of reviewing these cars. Pulling out the harder to find details and experiences between the models. Accurate.
I like the way he talks up the 996 all the time. Bodes well for when/if ever I go to sell mine. 100k km on the clock and still a great drive
Shhhh, those of us who want one don't want the word getting out ;)
John Duggan, Oh yes. I’m with you all the way. My daily 996.1 is just the business. Does it all.
You'd imagine he's sitting on a stockpile of low mileage examples waiting for the market to finally turn up on them, so he's trying to talk them up and inflate the price lol.
I have spent liberally on my 996.1 manual and no regrets as it is still exciting to drive. Sure, interior is a bit cheap but my Jaguar XJ6 scratches that itch so going between the two provides satisfying variety
Speaking of old school, I got to drive the original 3.3 Turbo 4-speed manual in the 80s in my late teens as a friend of mine's father had one and he used to let me drive it (crazy, I know). That really was the notorious one, lol. Crazy levels of lag, very much all or nothing, but really exciting when everything lit up.
I have always though the 911 Turbo is the ultimate 'stealth' supercar. As you said, will give equal or better performance compared with any main manufacturer of supercars, yet is much more subtle and practical. I would be delighted to have one such as the one you're driving here.
The 997 has and likely always will be my favourite of the 911's, a Carrera 4/S Coupe would do me just fine.
997, mega. 997.2 gt3 PDK, the wet dream. A gt3 we centre locks. Wow
Depends if you want N/A or Turbo. The Turbo is a totally different beast to a 2/4S. I love mine, it’s so bloody quick.
@@s20ttv N/A would do me because I would never reach the potential of that so a turbo would be wasted on me, far better off in your hands lol
as being a 997.1 c4s owner, I think a turbo is much better, I felt the need for another 150HP after installing the Cup 4 tires.
@@bensontan6571 Never having actually driven one I'm only guessing what would be suitable but its based on the fact that a standard car is quick enough for my skills.
Excellent car, and make no mistake, it is viciously fast. More than likely substantially faster than anything else you have driven, unless you have a more modern turbo. I have a 455hp Camaro SS 1LE, and the 997.1 turbo will blow that thing into the weeds in a straight line.
The best 997 TT review out there.
I have the same spec manual, 2007 coupe black on black. Can relate with every word.
Car is perfect especially after tuning
All the Porsche 911s are great. All of them. But, it’s interesting reading all the different views on which is the last great one for whatever reason. If you’ve owned anyone one of them, you’re truly fortunate. Porsches are the best driving cars. Thanks for another excellent video.
After 3 years of owning one … I can say this is a great car
These are still so beautiful and desirable. We have a 2006 Boxster S (6 spd) and it's fantastic. I want a same generation 911 S so badly!
Thank you JayEmm, FOUR HUNDRED & EIGHTY horse power. I remember "Performance Car of the year 95 when they went to the Isle of Man and the then new 993- 911Turbo won the test that had 405hp I think... and everyone was laughing their arse off when they drove that car. Great video.
A great , well-balanced review thank you. All that you said mirrors all of the reasons that the 997.1 Turbo is my choice of vehicle, it does everything with real aplomb.
Thankyou
Great video! It actually changed my mind about trading my 09 997 TT Cabrio with 60K miles for a low milage 991.2. I’ve had the car for near 10 years and love it but have been considering a newer car but I think stay with this Mezger powered beast. Thanks!
Great video, always a fresh and nuanced view of cars, while lots of other reviewers resort to cliches.
Great to see your comments while out in my favourite Porsche
VTG Turbos have been used before on a lot of Diesel Applications. It was new back then for petrol engines. That why it was kind of standing out technology when the car was new. Today most of the manufacturers go with the cheaper solution of the twin-scroll turbo. It`s also a good technology.
Great review, although, a 997.2 Turbo with PDK is a work of art.
That is a great sports car.
@@william911turbos7 quite stupid comment
Good point about the wheels. I've got 997 Turbo wheels on my 987!
Excellent review as I've come to expect. Font of knowledge!
Been tempted by one of these for a few yrs now. Have to be a manual - nice bit of mid corner breaking made the edit 😳
Great review JayEmm. This may be my next Porsche - in the spring.
Not only one of the best looking 911 but also serious fast and with the solid Mezger engine.
These will go up in value for sure...
I really hope so as I bought a 997 turbo gen 1.5 last week & I pick it up in a couple of weeks. Had to sell a kidney to buy it ☺️
Yep, need a 997.1 Turbo. Convinced me; I sold my lovely, modded 930 a year ago. This can replace it; kept the vintage Longhood 👍
great review. And definitely a good point, in the real world the turbo is faster and more fun than the gt3 until you get to the track of course.
To me, the 911 Turbo is the perfect example of why you would sacrifice a bit of pace for more overall thrills. If a sports car just isn't kicking out a nice sound, half the battle is lost before you've even gone anywhere
997 Turbo is my ultimate dream car. Hoping to upgrade from my 996 one day
Saving to buy one of these, can’t wait!!
Awesome video Jay!! I would love to see a comparison video of the 997.1 C4s vs 997.2 C4s also a 997.2 C4s vs 997.1 Turbo. Can’t seem to find anything on RUclips comparing those models directly..
Agree on the GT3 comment: always wanted a GT3. Eventually drove one (997.1 GT3) and compared to my 997 2S the reluctant gearbox, light steering and pedal weighting was underwhelming...
Upgraded clutch, e88 package or 997.2 ic, a tasty big diameter exhaust and a esmotor tune et voilá, reliable monster. Pin the coolant lines, put some extra torque on the cam bolts and expensive problems should be none.
The 997 turbo gen 1.5 is absolutely nuts👀. My best friend has one and it's amazing. If I had the money, I would buy one... But I have a 997 c2s and it's plenty already so... 🥳
Thanks for the review. Am looking at buying one myself.
“I am a tart” - JayEmm, I love this channel
Cheers Lloyd
Didn’t see it coming 😂
What is a tart?
I've become a fan of yours, and subscribed, since seeing your 992 review, and accompanying explanation on Rennlist. #Truth I loved my 2003 996.2 which I drove to 96,610 miles before selling to my best friend, and will never, ever sell my 997.2 GTS. Sadly, the 991 and beyond hold no appeal for me whatsoever. I also harbor a real appreciation for Lotus cars, but could not live with the reliability and build quality issues. Keep real.
Thanks Thomas
Best looking and still my fave 911 is the Porsche 964 preferably a 5-speed Turbo in Black or Red BAD BOYS FOR LIFE
Jay I’m so happy you’ve done this! Hoping to get in one of these by the time I’m 35.
Chris Stott why 35 man? You’ve made me feel ancient’ 😂❤️
Renn Eleven unfortunately need to get a few other things out of the way first! It’s a 5 year goal!
I hear you. I was the exact same. Funny how once you do it, how easy it is to let go! What is your list? I’m curious!
@@renneleven Honestly it's ridiculously long, but I want to sample loads, absolute top of my bucket list is an F12 highly unlikely but the pursuit of it will be worth it I'm sure. In the meantime if I can experience an E92 M3, Land Rover Vogue, a super class merc and an old defender and of course a turbo/turbo S I'd be pretty happy. How about you?
It’s quite funny, I’ve always sought attainable cars as the yardstick. I just bought my forever 911, and want to explore aircooled additionally. Also would love my old DC2 back. Miss that.
Good review, got a 997 gen 1.5 manual, no plans to sell anytime soon
Friend of mine has a turbo. 997.1. Gorgeous car gorgeous spec and gorgeous sound. I’d love to own one and use it as a daily. There’s a 996 turbo with over 600k mi. Nuts the reliability of these cars
Favourite 911 is the 996 and doesn’t like the 992. Sounds a little controversial to me, but apart from that a good little review, I think a 997 ( non S ) with a Manual box will be bargain of the century in the next couple of years and worth a fortune in 15 years plus times 👍🏻 I’ll take any 911 please !!
As always, very honest and thorough review. You recommend the short shifter, GT3 version, on this 997, correct?
The 997.1 manual turbo is in my top 3 favourite 911's.
Whats not to love?, except the price. They hold their value so well. Love the front bumper design.
R Tap get one. They really as as good as they look 👍🏻
I live in Ireland, never seen a 997.1 manual turbo. All delivered with that rubbish auto.
All the 997.x turbo go for €75k + here. Outta my league.
R Tap I’d disagree with ‘rubbish auto’. Mines tiptronic and I wanted one with it. One it’s faster shift than manual, two it’s great to drive with. Usually in any other 911 is say a manual box is better. With a turbo the auto box or PDK is definitely the one to have. I suggest you drive one.
@@s20ttv Whatever you have to say to sleep better at night, mate ;)
@@s20ttv the Tiptronic auto is strong and more than up to the power. I had a 996 Turbo with the Tiptronic but it wasn't fun, just crazy fast.
Braking mid corner??!
Great review. Love the level of detail. You know your 911s!
Yeah that was me driving it for James to do the fly bys. That corner is a bit deceptive and went in a bit hot..
Thanks James JayEmm i love this car deffo worth the money
The 997. 1 the last analogue Porsche, all these mappable digital car coming out of Germany all sound synthetic and with loads of bhp. Speed is not important rather engine characteristics, drive and distinctive engine sound all take priority over bhp / speed. I love to drive a car and all these digital cars all computer aided that helps the driver. This 997 is the golden nugget of the Porsche mainly the naturally aspirated engines, reminds me of the beauty of the mechanical watch over a Quartz watch.
I have 997.1 C4s and my brother has a 997.1 turbo
Both cars are insane but the turbo takes it up a notch .... nonetheless, I still think my C4s is a beast
997.1 turbo manual might be my favorite ever 911.
997.1 or .2 (prefer the 997.1 for looks) will be a classic soon. Get one if while it’s still attainable. It’s the last analog classic look and feel.
You're going to wear out that road soon. 😁 Great review!
993 turbo is my favourite, 997 second best. 964 flat nose is quite nice.
My heart is torn between one of these and an F-Type V8 R..... Every time I think I've come to a conclusion, I see another video that makes me change my mind..... Back to looking at 911's again
Lloyd Lawrence - UK I’ve drove both and own the Turbo. The R sounds fantastic and interior is nice but the Porsche looks better. It also gives you a better feeling when driving. I suggest you drive both and decide. Either N/A v8 or twin Turbo Flat 6.
@@s20ttv - I had a 996 3.8l and it never really ticked the box for me. I need to get myself into a 997 turbo so I can get a proper feel for it. The Jag did feel really good to me.....
Lloyd Lawrence - UK The R Jag is quick and the 7 speed box is super good. You’d need a PDK turbo to be close to that, the first PDK are a bit crappy. Go with your heart. My wife works for Jag so I just don’t really have much passion for it as I see it every day... the Porsche on the other hand makes me feel good when I open the garage and see it, then right foot down and... woooowwww.
@@s20ttv - if I go for the 911, it would have to be a PDK not a manual. The F-Type might be out of the equation if it can't fit in the garage - the Jag is wide with a capital W!
I'm a HUGE 997 fan, HUGE.
However it's hard to see past a V8 and that particular V8 just sounds rude. Buy the Jag now, sell in a year, get a 997 Turbo or a 991.1 Turbo (S) as the prices should have softened a little as used 992's hit the market.
Tough choice. 🤔
I love this channel especially as I am one of the lucky (and smart) US car guys to own a Lotus 111R. My previous car was a 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo which I had for 32 years and Porsche was my brand. Now I doubt you could give me one. The last true Porsche was the 993.
Dude you drive tin cane with Toyota camary engine.
@@moneyparhar Dude, The EVORA has a Camry (learn to spell and capitalize) engine. The Elise has a Celica GTS base motor, a Yamaha racing head and Lotus ECU. Bulletproof. If you doubt its lineage then you know not about engines or World Rally. Weighs less than 2000 lbs.And that would be an aluminium monocoque. Advice to you: Stick with Uber.
"The last true Porsche was the 993"
Everything was better in my day, young'un...
Dave, that's an aluminium chassis with composite panels - no monocoque
@@ianc8999 I may be older than you.
One notable upgrade on the 997 is the electronic AWD. 996s had a mechanical diff.
Technically the 996s is a viscous ( fluid) coupling, with no mechanical connection between driveshaft and front diff.
I'm a proud owner of a 2008 997.1 Turbo and I love the car. It's the last in the line of the Hans Mezger incredible 3.6L engines. In 2009 they went to a completely new design in a 3.8L engine... I recently had the opportunity to drive the 991 Turbo at a local dealer. While it's a spectacular car with a massive leap in technology, design, and comfort it felt way to big to be a 911. I didn't fully realize the size difference until I got back into my own car for the drive home. Of course I'd take a 991 if given to me, but I will gladly stick with my 997 with the hope that it appreciates in value over the next 10 years as many are predicting.
Is the 997.1 better than 997.2 in your opinion? I'm looking to buy either one. Thank you.
@@gabillionaireMany people consider the 997.2 as the sweet spot of the modern 911. Given the choice and the budget I’d go for a later model 997.2. The did a rear facia change starting in 2009 which much needed as the previous version went all the way back to around 2000 and the 996. Plus the 997.2 got PDK which is light years better than the Tiptronic of which I owned several. The 997.2 was also only around for two model years as the 991.1 came out in 2011. If you can find a 2010 997.2 in any model (Turbo always preferred by me) you will be very happy. They’re small, nimble, very fast, and very dependable. Good hunting!
@@occultustactical6138 thank you for your tips and advice! Much appreciated
Im getting my 997 Turbo tomorrow! 69k KM automatic for 62k swiss francs
That is my favourite 911 turbo model.
Had a 911 turbo and though it was blistering fast, as an experience it was totally souless.
Now have a V8 Vantage, much slower, but far more of an experience to drive.
The 911 is a very usable everyday car, and I think that's what counts against it a little and takes away from it being truly special.
Lovely cars the Vantage
I love my Turbo. I don't need to stand out and engine noise is not bad for my 991.2. I like to drive and I love the performance. But everyone has their thing.
One of the great things re. the Turbo is a few mods can change the character to more of a scary/exciting weekend toy. Overall I agree with you about the passion factor though - 997 Turbo is more of a sleeper street GT for sure vs a raw edgy sportscar. Astons are a lifelong fave of mine as well and I wish I had budget & space...
British country roads give me such high anxiety haha.. great review!
Currently, 650+ likes from Turbo owners and 24 dislikes from GT3 owners. ;)
In the USA they only made 226 (+/-) 2009 997.1 Turbo 911s that are coupe and 6-spd. I'll hold onto mine.
Yaassss thank you for that review!
A fantastic looking car, great review
Wow wish I had a road like that near me!
Was just watching your other video on Patreon about dealers politely screwing around on customers, and the over-valuation of Porschae in general. As an owner ("the pricks are on the inside!"), I think there's no one I'd like to hear more from on this topic of Porsche and what's really on. I'd like to see you get your hands on the e-hybrid twin turbo performance variant Panamera as well as the Taycan but I tend to agree the 997 are the last I really see myself in.
Porsche's sales strategy is baffling. Annoy potential customers and continually sell to flippers.
I think the exhaust on this car is not stock, it´s a smooth modification and not straight into the face, it´s sound a bit like "luftgekühlt" in the mid and lower rev´s. Can you please tell me who made this exhaust?
Excellent review.
Tart !😂 nice review James 👌🏻
you're very right Jay, the 997 GT3 gearbox can be reluctant, it almost makes the driver wonder if rushing a gear through is going to damage the synchros. It won't but I think it's a gearbox that probably takes serveral thousands of miles to fully bed in. The 997T is a great car, for looks I would just lower it a 10-15mm and put a duck-tail. The std liftable wing is just a bit lukewarm. And the side vents (also with the GT2) look a bit ugly IMO. Other than that it's an ace car and anyone should pick one up while they can.
Numeric cables and short shifter cure all 997 gearbox issues save for a stiff 1st gear in the cold.
Best all around car, ever, the 997tt.
A future classic with unlimited power potential
Last of the Mezger engined turbos.
Mate you are the 996 spokesman of the year 😄
Trivia question - so which one is better 997 turbo or GT-R?
Actually like the 911 Turbo 👍🤪
Especially the 997 ☝️
I watched this video because I always loved the 997 turbo S, currently considering buying one or the 991 but still looking at the prices, taxes, enjoyment factor. Thanks for the video, you made me laugh when you described yourself as a Tar...
I have a 992 C4S and must say I agree with your comments, i am a little underwhelmed by it as does not give me the driving thrill I had hoped for. Thinking of changing for a 2016 Boxster Spyder or grovelling to try to get a 718 Boxster Spyder allocation but highly unlikely. Interested in your opinion on the best Porsche model as a enjoyable replacement excluding GT3s.
991.2 GTS, but not if you drive bad roads a lot
@@JayEmmOnCars 991.2 GTS or 997.1 Turbo manual?
996 fave generation, go on my son!..
I'm a tart too 😂👍
My problem w Porsche’s and including 996 isn’t the gear shift and needing a short shifter. It’s that the clutch pedal has to travel from here to Kentucky to release. That slows shifts more than anything on these cars
Not at all in my 964 😊
@@claudiomarangone614 good to know. I’ll try one. Been searching ads for a 964 convertible.
That’s fixable. I converted 997.1 turbo to the GT2 style setup. Problem solved!
On point as per 💯🤛🏿
Great car. Love it
I own a 997.1 turbo 6MT in guards red. I pretty much agree with all that is said in this video...except (no offense) your affinity for lobster claw wheels 😂
Well done on this. Sounds like there is a 911 for everyone.
Always disliked the wheels on these. I am a big fan of the 'lobster claws', though (had no idea they were called that).
Oh, and the exhaust tips - never liked those (keep 'em round I say - this new fad is just yeeeuch).
But those really are the most minor criticisms of what is such a desirable car.
Julian Evans I know what you mean about the wheels. When they found themselves on other 911’s... 😩
I agree with that man.
@t c Yes, I'm sure I'd struggle through somehow.
At least the exhausts are real. Integrating the tips into the bumper instead of hanging them underneath is actually technically difficult and the reason why so many cars these days have fake tips with the real exhaust inside. Not so here
Great car. I had a tip one, sold it to get a manual 996. Would have kept it if it was manual. Auto is a bit boring to drive, even with all that power.
If you like the Metzger engine, you want the 2009 911 Turbo. The reason? MY2009 was the only year that the 997.2 had this engine so you get the updated interior and you still have this engine. BTW, a manual 2009 911 Turbo is in the $70-80,000 range in the US the last time I checked. But a manual F430 is in an altogether different zip code. Saw a nice one go for close to $200,000 at an auction just in the past month. It did have really low miles, but still a LOT of money for a 15 year old car!
Really? Where did you find that out?
SenszR
Do some research. The 997.2 was more than the usual mid-cycle refresh. With the introduction of the 997.2 in 2009, PDK was first offered and a new direct injection engine (DFI) was introduced as well as interior updates with Bluetooth and hard drive navigation. The 2009 turbo, however, did not get the new engine until the following year (2010).
The 997.2 turbo also has a different front diff offering a more rear wheel bias.
Claude Dickson I’m just asking where you got that info because I can’t find it anywhere.
Today... 997.1 sticks are 65-80K. A 997.2 stick is 95-110K .....
Again very much to the point, great review!
Yeess maaate - that’s the 911 review we’ve been waiting for.
Now you need to review one with a couple of mods thrown at it... 600hp is an utter barrel of laughs in one of these!
mod it and make it worse, delude yourself in process you made it better until 2-3 yrs later you put it back to stock and discover that was best after all. Plenty of basic maintenance to spend your money on as hoses and bushes have to be replaced
Nonsense... The stock 997 Turbo exhaust is too quiet, and the chassis + drivetrain are more than capable of handling an additional 120+ hp without in any way sacrificing comfort or changing the character of the car for the worse.
A few well chosen engine mods will not only add torque & power, but will even drop the boost threshold RPM, making for a more driveable car in day-to-day conditions.
Many a car guy, Matt Farah for example, have commented on mods that were not improvements. Exhaust, I understand. I ordered the Fister modification ( PSE in permanent mode) for my 996.1 and at first I regretted it although after 6 months I loved the extra sound at 3k although hearing the variocam at 5k was harder. I’ve seen more 911 Turbos made worse than improved though. Admittedly, I am not a Turbo fan as the launch into Hyperspace tends to overshadow all the other virtues of the 911
Perfect car!
Lobster Fork not claw but people have been mistaken for so long that claw is now the new norm........
Great video... I didnt hear any comparison to the 997.2
I haven't driven a 997.2 turbo
@@JayEmmOnCars 👍 Im sorry I havent one to offer
I’ve got a 2010 turbo with a PDK box. I’ve just sorn it until April, message me then if you fancy reviewing it. I think the 3.8 with pdk is next level again. Guess I’m biased though. 👍
When I pushed the like-button it went from 996 to 997. Coincidence? :-)
Any thoughts on a '08 GT2 then.... Jay...would that be to firm...
I have no experience of one so could not say
Good and honest review! This 997.1 Turbo Manual....with the last Mezger engine is a peach, you just have to live with the ugly 996 rear lights!!
Or you swap them with the 997.2 version and also change the rear bumper in the process ;)
Meh, 996.2 Turbo and 997.1 Turbo are the best 911s in existence.
