That instrument has different names in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Srilanka and Japan.
I am from Bangladesh, it is called "do tara" (meaning: do = double, tara = string. So 'do stara' meanings double string.) you can say it is a kind of guiter. There three variations of it. With 1 string, 2 strings and 3 strings.
1 string is called Ek tara
2 strings is called Do Tara
3 strings is called Se tara
