I only recently found out about tournaments like these. I live in the Netherlands, and when we were kids, there weren't any arcades around. I played MK games on the SNES, with my little brother and older brother (who weren't really into fighting games as much as I was), and we played with all of our friends, but most of them didn't own a SNES, and only played MK games at our place. So back then, I thought I was really good at MK games, because nobody could beat me. But we didn't know about all these crazy combos, the run jab presure, we weren't aware of frame-data, recovery frames, etc. Most of our friends only wanted to see the fatalities, and weren't that interested in figuring out how to actually play this game. It never really even occured to us that there was such a thing as a tier list. The only external information we ever got was coming from gaming magazines, but hardly anybody bought those, and all they wrote about was either lore or finishing moves. Remember, we were just kids back then, and every character was as good or bad as the dude playing him/her. I never knew Kabal was this crazy good for example. It's really cool finding all of this shit out, years later, and I've watched a bunch of these tournaments; they're a lot of fun to watch.

When that spear connects at 15:58 he damn near takes all the hair off his head from coming out of his seat so fast and Shock absolutely loves it because it's a mutual love and respect for the game and for each other as competitors. So many awesome moments in this video, it makes me very happy someone recorded this and allows us to enjoy it whenever we please. The guy in the red shirt, who got bodied, deserves to be archived as a douche though and hearing and seeing the commentator(s) call him out on multiple occasions is priceless.

25 years ago I won the competition in my hometown in UMK and MK2 and now watching this thing was constant goosebumps throughout. Love it guys! Appreciate you organizing this!
MK was the red headed step child of the FGC for years, until we brought it back in the early 2000s. It wasn't until around 2005 when UMK3 started getting respect and other MK started to get some play as well. This opened the door for MK9.
@outworlddragoon I mean vs Joe in the Winners and Grand Finals, I did use Smoke, Ermac, Sonya, and Kabal against Joe alone, that's more characters used than any 2 average tournament players combined uses in a tournament. I have used up to 10 characters in a tournament before, and I don't have to do that.

Not only were there Fatalities but I remember Brutalitys, Animalitys, Babalitys, Mercys, Friendships and level fatalitys. Some of them were impossible to execute in time to see it ever happen.
I'm in the top 10 of the best players of my country, and one thing i can tell, this game you have to be quick decider like a computer processor, more fast you assimilate the opponnent actions, more fast you can antecipate them.
@outworlddragoon smoke is a good character, but i wouldn't say any in this game best. This game is surprisingly balanced for its time, unlike most fighting games that come out nowadays
@TheFaisalano That is why when I use to play umk3 on xbox live,I use to use 3 different characters,it was human smoke,unmasked sub zero,and cyber smoke.Have been using those 3 characters since they were playable in the series.I rather keep my mind open with characters,then just stick with only 1.

I've had the Mortal Kombat Kollection on Steam for a few months now. After watching several vids of how the pros play, I'ma put in time to learn how to do it like them.
@TheFaisalano well it depends, stronger characters wont have long chain combos, they can take as much damage with a 5 hit combos oppose to 12 hit combos. but they trying to fix it for MK 9 to make it a real Evo tourament.

You need to press the buttons faster. That combo will be blockable after the first hit if you aren't quick enough with the button inputs. Just do the input as fast as you can and it should be unblockable. If you are having too much trouble you can always just do his 2 hit pop up in whatever combo you are trying to do, i think the difference in damage is like 2%.

Also, I've been trying to get good at this game but man, it's an ass kicking. Any tips you could give me? I'm playing on an emulator obviously, I just don't know what would be the ideal control scheme.

There is a reason for that. SF2 and all its updates, especially Super Turbo, were so ahead of their time that they are a viable tournament game for pros today. Mortal Kombat is just a casual game. Its got a cool backstory, cool characters, and a ton of charm, but its just not a competitive fighting game.
