Evaluating Potential Police Dogs - Testing Drives, Traits and Environmental Stability

  • Evaluation video of some future working dogs we are evaluating for police work. Some of the things we do (not all) to see if a dog is ready to test for police/government work. Please understand - if you want your "savage" to go into police or government work they have to have a hunt, defense, and environmental stability over everything else. They have to allow a complete stranger to grab the leash and in return, the dog must work for the complete stranger (to a degree). They must react and perform for strange people, in a strange place, with new tasks being asked of them. We rarely if ever evaluate prey drive, outside of using it to activate a young dog close up - as the odor in the real world has no "prey" association. We will also rarely if ever evaluate a dogs ability to run-down the man and do long suit bites - honestly means very little other than the dog likes prey bites. I want to see a dog standing their ground, posting out, defending their space and going into straight defense and or "fight-drive". From this - anything can be built. From this monster's can be developed.
These are two very young dogs - bright, bright futures!

Some nice tests and yes genetics plays a big part. That said we breed malinois and had litters where 4-5 month old some tests said not suitable for police work. Some bloodlines take time to develop and for that one several are now at Police in Belgium USA, Germany.
Sometime you can indeed see things fast if dog is not suitable. sometimes they bite like crazy but go in the red very fast, looks great and many would like a dog like that, but if a dog can't switch on/off it's also not ideal for police work.
We have breed many malinois in Belgium were we live and many go to Police. From our current litter born may 2020 we will keep 2 males to train them before they will go to police at age of 12-18 month. This is puppy training, getting used to crowds, noises.
This is the females third litter, she is trained knpv ph1 obj but also ipo 3, so yes you can train different programs. The males is from a well know kennel in Belgium, old nvbk solid bloodlines. Carefull looking at bloodlines is a thing you want to do. Most breeders also forget the importance of the female. She will pass on many of here genes sometime more than the male. A female is more than just a breeding bitch. She also has to be selected for quality.

@@christophjanssen9324 no problem, I'd just recommend reading and looking up drive channeling and the differences between prey and defense drive before pushing them into defense. You can really mess a dog's grip and confidence up quick with poor decoying in defense. Frankly, a lot of what you see on RUclips is also poor with exception of this channel and few others. I'd strongly recommend looking at several police k9 podcasts (Working Dog Radio, Jerry Bradshaw's podcast, HITS radio, etc.) and after listening to the mixture, you'll get a pretty good understanding of what you need to do to progress

It is NOT all in how you raise them. And the proof would be that nearly no owner ever takes a dog through 1 full basic class at a PetSmart or similar... Ignorant people make ignorant excuses. This Malinois or Dutch Shepherd type dog is showing unusual genetic aptitude as pro handlers work the dog. This is the genetic makeup of the dog... not 'a desire to please' or a 'need to be loved' .

I made my ultra most effort to keep him a goofball with other people. 2 weeks ago in his 7th year of age. I had to give him antibiotics. I tried to force him and put the pill in his mouth. He said "you are up to here dude. After that we may have a hot event". Genetics matter.

She wags her tale because she enjoys it, just like a sociopathic crazy person also enjoys the killing fearlessly. The exhilarating rush of adrenaline coursing through their veins, the thrill of the kill is so politically incorrect, but that is what is real when needed, PTSD is never in their future. Betcha she is an excellent rat killer on the farm. No fear of getting hurt or killed is the pick of the litter for the police dog. Just do your best to control them so they do not over extend themselves. They will get hurt and die for you. That is what needs to be addressed. To many guys want to get their pup trained to do what they see on You Tube. For the dogs sake do address worst case scenarios to teach people to watch out for that ! Build the right image !
