  • This is one of the most haunting Irish Airs of them all. Its origin is in Donegal and the melody dates back to the 16th century. I just had to arrange it and I think it sounds particularly well on this beautiful guitar. It's made by the relatively unknown English Luthier Nick George.

What sources point to this being from the 16th century? I would love to know more about this gorgeous tune.

The usual confusion with this air is that it is relating to the river that runs through Belfast. However there is an area in central Donegal referred to as the Lagan Valley or simply Lagan or sometimes spelt Laggan. As with most Irish airs their exact origin is impossible to trace as they were handed down in the aural tradition. I first heard it in the summer of 1971 on Arranmore Island sung in Irish by an old man who told me it was a love song that dated back to Elizabethan times.
