@@jeffadams7134 I remember almost 55 years ago as a kid, my dad told us all to run inside the farmhouse. A rabid coon was walking around our house, mid-day, gnashing his teeth. My dad popped him with a 12 guage pumpkinball. I had a blue tick coonhound, we killed 50 coon per year along with my cousins and their redbone coon dogs. Only 2 of those raccoons were rabid over a 10 year span, 500 coons plus. Most raccoons aren't rabid. But they can get that way on rare occasion. More likely foxes or bats.

I've been trapping coons for years to keep them out of my chickens. What they'll do to a chicken is terrible. They usually bite the head off and drink the blood. When you set the box traps use a long steel pin to secure the trap to the ground. It's also a good idea to carry the trap with a pair of leather gloves to protect your hands and use a broomstick to open the trap when releasing the animal. Good luck!

Hi Kelly, what a wonderful video once again! So with trapping the raccoons another bate that you can also consider using is to save some leftover fish that you guys get from your fishing trips for it. Raccoons love to eat things from the ocean too. That way you won't have to spend extra money and time to go get the dog food or worry about your kids reaching into the trap to get the peanut butter and captain crunch. :-) By the way, I love the Jack Russell that you guys have. Now I am considering getting one for my little one too! Thanks again.

Hi Kelly ! There are more than raccoons roaming your yards... put the game cams in other areas around the pens facing out some time covering a wider area... right next to the pens you can add a foot wide strip of some wire mesh in the soil, staked or stapled to keep it from getting pulled up or undercut. Bury it about an inch or two below ground level to make it waste the predator's time.

Puppy chow (dry from a bag) and mini marshmallows in a small pile at the back of your live trap. Sprinkle a few mini marshmallows along a center path into the trap and a few in front on the ground. Make sure you stake your trap to the ground. I've caught hundreds of coons this way. To let the coon out, flip the cage upside down. The door will open and the coon can exit.

I have raccoon problems in central north Florida , Live Oak, fl to be exact in the country just west of town. We bought this retirement home on an acre December 2017 and have had problems with raccoons and opossums every spring. The yard had been neglected to tall bushes (15 foot tall azaleas 🌺 plants and both front lawns was mostly over planted with wild flowers 💐 by the previous owner. Any way trying to get the lawn right and watering a lot we found out that watering a lot brings worms to the surface and raccoons and opossums love worms and grubs. And they both are good diggers, raccoons did the deeper holes of the two. So far I’ve caught 7 raccoons, 4 opossums and 3 neighborhood cats using 2 live traps. Released them all. Raccoons and opossums have been known to return to their home territory from 3-5 miles away and one homesteader that I follow started putting a spot of red paint on their back and proved that is true as he caught one two additional times as it hat two red spots on it. I started the red spot deal and had one come back from 8 miles away. Now I release them on the west side of a river from our house and they don’t come back. They have also eaten vegetables from our two gardens. We put up chicken wire fences and that fixed that fixed that problem. I caught all with cat kibble with a little of the same captain crunch. I crush a little of both to get scent around the cage. I use a game camera so I know that I still have one smart raccoon to catch. I will be trying bread and peanut butter with captain crunch tonight. I also subscribed to your channel channel. 👍 😎

I had a strange little garage apartment years ago when my wife passed away ...In the early morning I would see deer and some descent sized animals cutting through the yard . Well one evening I heard some noise on the porch which is upstairs of course . When I opened the door there sat a pretty hefty racoon . Like Gabe I wanted nothing to do with a Racoon that might be carrying rabies so I shut the door real quick . There was bag of trash he got into with chicken bones and other stuff in it but he was gone . I found a screen door in the garage and mounted it . Plus I didn't leave anymore bags of trash on the porch...problem solved . As cute as racoons look I'm sure you know how agressive they can be . PK

After failing with traps, I finally cornered and caught one with a gigantic net. A raccoon is both terrified and terrifying when caught.
Anyway, we drove him/her (whatever) out 20 miles into some forestland - and we were both very happy. However, if that raccoon found a way back - it would not have left my property alive.

I've trapped many critters on my property. The first one was a young raccoon. But the night before I caught it, I trapped the mom or dad raccoon. It ripped apart my cage trap (similar to your trap) and escaped. Since then, I've caught about 15 possums, which I release down at the creek. I've trapped about 75 Eastern fox squirrels. The first 25 I let go at the creek. Then I learned that it's illegal to transport them because they are non-native and invasive. So the last 50, I've killed in the trap. The first one was brutal, but it gets much easier (I think that's what Dexter once told me). I've caught about 15 skunks which I shot too. Unfortunately, when they die, they empty their entire stink sack.

Kelly... You need to engineer a better way to store your feed. Raccoons (+ feral cats, domestic cats, dogs, and everything else will get into the feed. EVen your birds will make a run on it. The wild critters will be back over and over and over again while your feed is sitting on the patio like that. Galvanized trash cans (30-55 gallon) with a cinder block or a few bricks in the bottom to weight it down. Buy some galvanized chain (boat trailer chain) and chain the lids to the side handles on the trash cans. Run the chain from one handle through the handle on the lid to the other handle and use a snap link to secure it. You can paint the cans so they don't look garish. Easy fix.

I always put peanut butter on the back of the pressure plate. Works great.

Appreciate you not killing them. They are just trying to survive like every other creature on this planet, including us.

They love hot dogs and BBQ. We feed the ones by our house all summer. Neat little critters but obviously they can cause havoc for some people. It’s awesome you didn’t kill them!!!

I had a pet raccoon as a kid and they come on our deck every night. You never have just one raccoon so keep your traps set. They love honeybuns and anything sweet. If you can cover the trap to make it seem more like a log that might help. They are trying to survive and doing all they know to do. If they have something to eat they'll leave the birds and trash alone. I hesitate to suggest buying a bag of cat food for em but that might fix the problem. We feed birds, squirrels, and raccoons on the deck and our indoor cats love it. It's like tv for them and we like it too. None of them bother anything because they have food. The most we've had at one time was 7 but 4 isn't uncommon.

I live in an area where wild quail are relatively common and I've seen a few babies running around and always reach for my camera because they are just so cool

Raccoons killed two different sets of chickens at our place, and as many coons have been dispatched. They’ve made it impossible for us to raise chickens right now, even though I built a very secure chicken coop. The grandaddy of all coons ripped the wood off the side of the coop, and it was screwed in with deck screws. I’m trying to figure out a way to electrify the coop without electrocuting the chickens.
