Just recently looked beyond Guitar Town and Copperhead Road and recently bought two cd's. Gems on both. Will be buying more. His honestly in interviews is unheard of in the entertainment world. An American treasure for sure.
Remember as a boy my dad would have these cassettes in his pick up truck , we would wear them out on road trips and camping trips. I could damn near cry looking back at the good times and these good songs , I'm 35 now with two kids of my own and though it won't be cassette tapes we wear out it'll surely be an iPod. God bless you all from Canada!
No doubt this was magic. I actually have "the other kind" tatooed on the back of my arm. He definitely pulled from a darker place back then, but it was in a word...magic. I do miss that sound, but his new art is just as magical, not quite as dark, but neither is he. I love him and he will always be the best writer ever in my books. May the shadow of Peace and Love follow Steve and his family wherever they trod! Peace from West Texas!
Steve is the best of the best on country rock//Americana....lucky to have been alive during this tenure and seen him in the early days... Unfortunately (or not) most "country fans" don't even know who he is!
hello friend, i was born and rasied in Texas, my Mama grew up in Colorado City, TX, been a fan of Steve's for years and years, i, too, am a recovering addict and he helped me get sober..that's a long story...but, he's always been able to strengthen my heart. Peace to you from MN.
Steve Earle has got to be one of my all-time favorites. I remember two distinct Steve Earle epiphanies that forever changed my musical world. The first one was in Kenny's Arcade in the fall of 1986 and "Guitar Town" came on the jukebox. I knew right then and there that I needed to learn to play guitar and so I did. Haven't quit. The second epiphany was on November 17, 1987, when I snuck into 86 St. Music Hall in Vancouver to see Steve Earle & The Dukes. I forever and ever became a fan!
This song spoke volumes to me as a 12 year old kid. I have The Other Kind tattooed on my right arm with the skull and crossbones from the Copperhead Road album cover except I replaced the shield with Harley Davidson wings!
I got a chance to meet Steve and get his autograph when he performed in Gateshead. I was truly honoured. His music had played a huge part in my life and kept my head held high during the rocky times
Genius this guy was...he wrote a song about being a slave to addiction and being at the mercy of something or someone that you don't have control over and seeking something that you even know what it is..... I ain't ever satisfied.
@songcrafter1971 hello friend, i was born and raised in Texas, my Mama grew up in Colorado City, TX, spent a lot of time out that way. i've been in MN now with my husband and children for 23 yrs, been a huge Steve Earle fan for yrs and yrs, this is my favorite song of his and i have to say he sure could make a girl's heart hurry in those days. Hope you got to see him on this tour.
Huge fan from Guitar Town on. However, I saw him during the Copperhead Road tour, and he showed up very late, while we were left standing outside in the cold. When they finally let us in two hours later, he took almost an hour to tune his guitars. I was pretty pissed after that show. But I still do respect him greatly for his songwriting abilities. That was a long time ago, and I wish him nothing but the best now.
I had no idea this existed and he played this on Letterman! My favourite part of Steve Earle's years (although not the best for him). Thanks so much for uploading this magic of history. Looks a bit different now!
If that was the last time you saw him, I encourage you to go see him now, Has a great band (though leaning a little more to folk they can still rock when called to). And he has been clean a good long while now, so that kind of behavior is a thing of the past.
@unrepentant42 hello friend, remember me??? You are right, Steve was incredible back then, and easy on the eyes (well, for girl types anyway...) He's coming back to Minneapolis July 23, of course you know I'vehad tickets in hand for a long while!! Hope you get to catch him on this tour.
well, you are wrong about that, sorry about the off night, maybe he wanted to sing and not sing over you. i've seen him many, many times, never once did he give anything less than 100% and $5000 worth of music for a $25.00 ticket. would walk across glass to see him. i'd give him another chance and listen for a change. just saying.
I never even pay attention to how many likes and dislikes a RUclips gets, and I don't need to tell you it's a waste of time. You don't even know if the person who put a thumbs down did so because they dislike the song per se, (unimaginable!) or because they found the acoustics on this live version disappointing. I liked it anyway, but maybe that person was so used to the studio version they were disappointed in the sound quality on Letterman's show. Best to just shine it on.
@stevieraygod I'm not about to get into a discussion with you about literature and grammar. Obviously you've no grasp of either of the two. However, the jest of my comment was a peace blessing to, in my opinion, the greatest wordsmith of our time. Peace to you as well.....wherever you might trod! Peace
@@lowellcalavera6045 Right??🤣🤣.."let me just disarm you with my 'wordsmithery' and bullshit hippy ideals before digging my blade outta your face" Peace and love indeed mr.OP. He couldn't even feign sincerity for one whole message. And the fact his username is 'songcrafter1971'..that bothers me no end. WRITE songs, craft beer. (I'm guessing he calls himself a 'lead guitarist' and people bring the lyrics to him, but he doesn't think its crafted 'right' unless he gets to show off his scales after the second chorus!! I'm onto you OP..I've insulted your honour..FIGHT ME YOU PRETEND PACIFIST!! 🤭👊😒
Agreed - not sure it was Earle who was being a jerk. Though I think part of the problem is that Steve's work varies so much, that he has folks who love the more subdued folk leaning music and those who want to rock. Unfortunately acceptable audience behavior for a rock concert is different from a folk concert. But I say if it is a seated venue, calm down a bit and don't come in sloppy drunk.
I had a best friend that separated from his wife while we were in the military. After she picked up and left him he took his Honda V45 Magna on a road-trip for a month across the American Southwest sans hotels. He slept when he wanted, ate when he wanted, and made friends wherever he found them. He got back with his Wife, and slept with mine a year after that. I beat him so badly it took me 3hrs with a steam-cleaner to remove all the blood. But I envy him that road-trip to this very day.
Who asked me. It's RUclips. Who asked anyone? I just saw your comment and laughed because you said that you didn't need to feel big by trying to make others feel small. Then you went on to call (whoever) a dumbass and stated that you couldn't resist. So, I said I guess you were feeling pretty small bla bla bla...but I meant I guess you do need to make yourself feel big by trying to make others feel small after all. I wasn't being all that serious myself. It was funny. Maybe you should lighten up
This was back when he was truly badass..I was a HUGE fan then..Sadly I saw him in concert here in Austin I was in the front row at The Backyard and he was a complete jackass to me for just trying to guess the next song he started to play..I lost respect for him after that and he was never that popular since then..
Steve Earle for songwriters Hall of Fame

Totally agree. Loved this song. Still do all these years later. Good story makers tellers do stuff to write good stories ❤

Such a deep heart wrenching song... Those that have lived it know it well.

One of Steve's very best songs, just great in every-way; music, lyrics and approach. Great.
Genius this guy was...he wrote a song about being a slave to addiction and being at the mercy of something or someone that you don't have control over and seeking something that you even know what it is..... I ain't ever satisfied.
+Jon Smith
He has a lot more than one song that fit that description.
+Jon Smith and all the while fighting his demon of addiction to heroin, he has been my hero for many years and a great inspiration in my own sobriety.
It'll happen to you to one day my friend
Happy birthday to me..my hero Steve Earle and my favorite song. Been a fan for a hundred years...
Sheer greatness. One of his best, and that's saying something.
I have always loved him ❤
love steve earle thanks for sharing
For my friend David who passed on this day in 2008. God bless you Sweetie

Bad ass Steve Earle!! back in the day....
He's the best!!!
Of all the musicians I have met my favorite down to earth guy is Steve Earl. Some don't like his politics and he could care less.
As far as I'm concerned his politics hit the nail on the head!
Yeah, he was definitely a "panty dropper" at this point in his life, but his talent is just immense...and it still is.
My favorite song of his. I sing this every day on my way
kool song my high school days great song thanks for posting
Grande artista, bellissima canzone.
Turn that beast into the wind...64 C 10.
Sweet! One of my favorite Steve songs. The band kicked ass on it as well.
The Other Kind is Metal/Rock at its absolute best! Best Song of Steve Earle's life! Rock On, my Friend Duke Steve
Christopher took me to see you you were great
Good music
I do not understand why I never heard this on the radio.

The last of the hardcore troubadours.
Thank you for posting this. Show's him with that"look I like." But....time marches on!

Jail time, drug addictions, living on the road, and 6 marriages will do that to you lol

Great drinking aong
It's been a hard road brother.
@Prometheus1st That's a hell of a story, brother. That could be a short story in the Times or a hell of a song.
Forgot to add - his cassettes of Guitar Town and Exit O, kept me company on many long drives and many long nights.
I shoveled coal into buckets to take into the old farmhouse I lived in to keep it dry to burn. We only had wood or coal to burn them days.
@Prometheus1st You should send that story to Steve. He could write a song about it.
@songcrafter1971
His son Justin is pretty dark - if that is any substitute. :)
Is that Michael Schenker playing behind Steve?
No....Zip Gibson on the Mandolin
There are those who break and bend...etc...)O(...
Whose the person that didn't like this? Why?

Dude's awesome at that point, yet he was at his worst point regarding his massive heroin and crack addictions right there. Ultimate functional addict.
Not functional for much longer, though. He was about to hit bottom and drop out of sight for a few years.
thank heavens he got back up. he has given those of us who love him are grateful for that.
For a while he was a lost person, but never, thankfully, a lost cause.
