Some great conversations with our students this week. Open honest dialogue around MH, supporting student understanding and building compassion. Challenging personal prejudgments and stigmatising beliefs, attitudes and behaviours, recognising that our use of terminology can exacerbate stigma and that we can all start to make change happen so that no one feels unable to open up and speak about their MH. This then supports us in seeking help without shame or self-stigmatising. We all have MH and this shifts and changes, our MH is part of us as humans, this should not be how we are perceived or labelled. We all have MH and this shifts and changes, our MH is part of us as humans, this should not be how we are perceived or labelled. Start a conversation today, but in asking how someone is, it is crucial that you are then prepared to listen, with an open mind, holding the space for the other person without judgement, or trying to fix or sort.

Poverty has been an overriding aspect for many of the students that we work with. However, labelling by other adults within communities and a lack of access to support services for mental health care have not only exacerbated poorer mental health, they have also resulted in self-stigmatising. Additional, concerns around accessing services whereupon, the person is not fully listed to or heard and may also be informed of lengthy referral dates often results in the person feeling devalued and further withdrawing from support services.
