So Hold your Fire might not have big "hits" on it like Moving Pictures or Permanent Waves but there was an art form to making a album that was more than a collection of song and HYF might be the best job RUSH ever did of creating a whole album that flows beautifully from start to finish. Way underrated RUSH album IMO! Force Ten next maybe?? Or Prime Mover (way underrated song)
Geddy, Alex and Neil have never let us down, and with so much integrity and grace... That's why RUSH NATION will ALWAYS be there for them... We're with you in your journey.. RESPECT!
A common thread through your Rush reactions: “Ive never heard anything like that before!” and “ I didn’t want it to end.” That’s what Rush did to me for nearly 40 years.
The song is always blown my mind the amazing base coming from Getty combined with the keyboards and the drums and that phenomenal solo from Alex at the end it always gives me goosebumps never fails!
This song is about GENIUS. Those who achieve their "dreams" by following their "fire", their passion and their genius. I put quotations around "dreams" because sometimes that drive to capture their vision and to realize their genius is more of a burden, possibly a cathartic process -- full of struggle and pain -- than the word would seem to suggest. I love the lyrics of this song so please look them up and re-listen to the song to get the full effect. Great song.
Awesome reaction and Time Stand Still is the big long lasting 1 off this album it might be 1 of Rushs most covered song thanks for doing Mission 👍 stay safe
derrick the martimer thanks DTM . Feels like time is standing still right now in 2020. But brighter days are ahead. Time to “Turn the page “ to my next reaction 😎
It is an excellent song - one of their few great songs from the '80s. The music fits the lyrics wonderfully: great lyrics from Neil, beautiful lyrical-melody and delivery from Geddy. You can tell Geddy wrote the musical superstructure and Alex supplemented that pretty well, ALTHOUGH there are huge chunks during the first half where Alex doesn't do very much. BUT he makes up for it at the end with probably his best-ever effort at combining beauty and visceral playing in the solo-fade-out. Excellent technical ability from all three throughout the bridge. All in all a magnificent song.
Just to let you know. My hero Neil Pearts BIRTHDAY is Sept 12th please wear a rush shirt and maybe do a reaction in his honor. I recommend Leave That Thing Alone with Neil solo live. His brother Danny asked for fans to wear a rush shirt in his honor miss you Neil R.I.P
Great reaction to my favorite Rush song. Been a Rush fan since the mid 80's, have every album, and have listened to every song of theirs multiple times. I can honestly say, this is my favorite song by them. I can think of 3 songs that have a very special place in my heart, and 2 of them are Rush songs, and it's interesting that you mentioned the other Rush song in your discussion here. That would be Marathon. In this interesting journey called life, we have our many ups and downs. There was a period for a few years in my life where I was on the road all the time, so I spent a lot of time in my car listening to music, just letting it randomly play through my music library. You ever been to the point where you're working 80 hours a week, week in, and week out, just to struggle to get by? Yeah, I did that for a few years. Obviously a low point in my life. But every time this song, especially just hearing that keyboard opening, would just lift my spirits and encourage me to continue on. This song to me is about having some dreams and goal in your life, things that you want to accomplish, and pushing yourself on to get there. Sure, there's going to be obstacles in the way as you go, but if you keep in mind your dreams, you can push through the obstacles. I love this song. Marathon likewise is talking about the journey of life, and that it is a marathon, not a sprint, so pace yourself so that you have the endurance to continue on. And if you're interested, the 3rd song that comes to mind is MercyMe's I can only Imagine. By the way, I personally like Hold Your Fire better than Power Windows, but it's not by far. And they are both in my top 3, with Hold Your Fire being number 1. I've seen several people on RUclips do their "Rush albums, worst to first" and a few of them pick HYF as their worst. I don't understand it, but many didn't like this period of Rush.
Scott Tolson thank you for sharing a piece of your life with me. I was a musician as well and found their dedication to making interesting and complex music while no sacrificing the quality of the songwriting very refreshing. To me they are the planet earth of the music universe! Cheers man!
HYF has been my #1 favorite album by Rush for years now. I grew up watching A Show of Hands, nonstop in high school and college. This entire period, with this album at the peak, has been the inspiration in my life of music - and yes, I've been a guitarist for 27 years and still say this is also Alex's best period, demonstrating his true ingenuity on the instrument. Their classic 70's era is good and all, but sounds like so many bis and piece of other bands out there that it's hard to hear Rush, be Rush; they tried to hard to be a Zeppelin/Genesis clone until the 80's
Surfeit ya man. I first discovered rush in my first band in 1989, At 14 yrs old. We played Tom Sawyer, lime light and Xanadu! I had only played guitar for 2 years but playing Alex’s riffs really helped me improve as a musician in regards to timing, playing different time signatures and thinking outside the 1/4/5 box. But that’s as far As I went with Rush . But the bright side is losing my metaphorical virginity in my 40’s to a waiting catalog of musical greatness! 😊
@@tonebonetelevision Tom Sawyer.... there's a key portion of that song you can tell was written on a keyboard and transcribed over to a guitar because no guitarist in their right mind would jump that many strings and move up and down the neck like that!! I love and hated covering it all at the same time :)
The first half of the song, I always felt was about accomplishing goals and having dreams. The portion after the musical break in the middle, I felt was a reflection on falling short of them. "It's cold comfort, to the ones without it, to know how they struggled, how they suffered about it". To me, that line translates into the very dismissive "cry me a river..." reply to a person who has "everything" complaining about life being difficult. As a struggling guitarist, I didn't care to hear bands complain about living out of a tour bus, since they were still doing what they loved, while I was fighting tooth and nail just to get an occasional local gig. This song taught me to keep holding on to that dream and aspiring to do my best to accomplish it, even if I had to change and adapt as time went by.
I really like this album a lot. It was the first physical CD I ever bought and I had it for three months befoe I ever had a cd player. The first time I heard this song I almost cried and I'm not ashamed to admit it. The lyrics are everything, totally uplifting.
You MUST see the live version of this song from A Show of Hands video. Alex's solo at the end is longer... they cut it a little short in the studio version, which is kind of a bummer. It's one of my favorite solos by Alex.
I just came across your channel, and following you through your exploration of these Rush songs is for me like rediscovering them after not having listened much to them for some time. Rush's "synth" period (1982-1991) is that part of my life between having ended high school, doing Civil Service and then embarking on college through the Master's, when I went from late adolescent to some sort of grown-up. Back then when there was still fabulous music being made. Thank you for taking me on this "memory lane", and I see this music touches the same nerves in you as it does in me. Certainly "Mission" is my favorite Rush song ever. "A spirit with a vision is a dream with a mission." What increbile lines this guy was able to write, he's sorely missed.
I know it is long, but it is life changer like this. The battle of right and left sides of the brain, logic and emotion. HEMISPHERES. Played by Apollo and Dionysus. A must for lyrics, you won't be disappointed.

This Rush track is a must listen from the live album Show of Hands
Mission is my fav from "Hold Your Fire".
"Hold your fire -
Keep it burning bright
Hold the flame
‘Til the dream ignites -
A spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission
I hear their passionate music
Read the words
That touch my heart
I gaze at their feverish pictures
The secrets that set them apart
When I feel the powerful visions
Their fire has made alive
I wish I had that instinct -
I wish I had that drive
Spirits fly on dangerous missions
Imaginations on fire
Focused high on soaring ambitions
Consumed in a single desire
In the grip
Of a nameless possession -
A slave to the drive of obsession -
A spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission…
I watch their images flicker
Bringing light to a lifeless screen
I walk through
Their beautiful buildings
And I wish I had their dreams
But dreams don’t need
To have motion
To keep their spark alive
Obsession has to have action -
Pride turns on the drive
It’s cold comfort
To the ones without it
To know how they struggled -
How they suffered about it
If their lives were
Exotic and strange
They would likely have
Gladly exchanged them
For something a little more plain
Maybe something a little more sane
We each pay a fabulous price
For our visions of paradise
But a spirit with a vision
Is a dream with a mission…"

rush-the spirit of the radio
ZerglilngVet I heard spirit of the radio and I gotta say humbly, Mission wins!
@@tonebonetelevision try rush-roll the bones.
its afun song :)
@@zerglilngvet5428 I like Roll the Bones; it's a fun song! I'll stand by what I've said already though, this album probably features Alex while at the peak of his creativity, blending his guitar in with the keyboards and being forced to compromise. On Presto and all the albums after this, you cal tell his style matured and he kept a lot of the lessons he learned from this era.
@@surfeit5910 This album is good, but I'll take Power Windows every single time.
It' all subjective, of course, but No.
