    Get the one with train! 1050 to Arkham is the best of the best! Worth it for that one scenario alone. You will feel like you're on a train getting sucked violently piece by piece into the mythos while simultaneously trying to solve a well written mystery.

    My oldest daughter doesn’t like boardgames that much but she absolutely adores this game. Along with my love for all things eldritch, this board game has done a lot to get her interested in lovecraft’s works.

    I adore this game. My #3 for the foreseeable future. I wish they’d make more DLC scenarios! There’s no need for more game components and with all that they have introduced already there’s plenty of stuff they could use to make more scenarios. I wish they’d do it, but they’d be spending a lot of time developing the game for a limited return so I think we’ve seen the end of the support for this game sadly.

    I agree with the mini situation, awful idea, very impractical. I love this game so much that I proxy a large number of them from other games. I bought some variant cultists on etsy as I think they are the worst of the lot along with the shoggoths, which I now use from Death May Die. Such a shame it's no longer in FFG's expansion plans.

    I know the app can facilitate things, but I still want to disconnect as much as possible when I play board games, so, I skip games with apps. I am also concerned about publishers not supporting the apps after 5, 10 or even 20 years from now making the cardboard and plastic completely useless.
    Out of topic here: What are your initial thoughts on Arydia? Are you interested in that game?

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  3 года назад +4

      "I bought this great bottle of scotch, but I don't want to drink it because I'm afraid it will be gone someday!"
      Live in the moment. Don't pass on something amazing now in the misplaced fear you won't be able to experience it in 20 years. That's like not going to concert now because in 20 years the band won't be around any more. WHAT? LOL! Besides, we only have about 20 years left on the planet with the way things are going! ;)
      Also, I'll bet dollars to donuts right now that the app will still be fully functional in some form in 20 years, if we still even have working computers and electricity by then.
      I backed Arydia - looks great. Also looks like a book keeping nightmare.

  • @cheesedanishable

    I like your final statement on app driven games and I repeat it a lot myself. It's the same with legacy games, they're one and done but it doesn't stop them from being amazing experiences. So many people get caught up in this thought that every game has to stand the test of time and be around for 30 years or it isn't worth picking up but that's really either a fear driven mentality or a jaded collectors view and either way completely ignores the experience of enjoying the game.

    • @jamesmitchener8198

      I get games to play with the kids as they grow up, so all app driven games are a bit of a risk. I still play Dungeonquest and Warhammer Quest, if they required apps that didn't work, I would be bummed out!
      If a game is truly great, I want to enjoy it with the family for years to come.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  3 года назад

      I’d rather have the chance to enjoy one of the games ever made now, than not enjoy it now in fear that I may not be able to play it in 20 years. Humanity only has about 20 years left on the planet, so…

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  Год назад +1

      I have a very small room in a very small house, so no room to keep any expansion boxes. If you have the luxury of space, storage solutions are much easier. However, there are still too many tiles. They don't add anything to the game. We don't need 10 different hallways. We need 2 or 3, max.

    My wife likes 1st edition better, but she isn't into app board games and not as into board games as I am. I really like 1st ed and I was happy it was compatible with 2nd because I would still play 1st ed. However I was always the Keeper and 2nd edition not only lets me play, but takes care of a lot of the work the Keeper does. Players had it easy in 1st ed as afar as actions go. But both tell fantastically fun stories.
    I agree that the Monster minis are cumbersome in 2nd and were much more relevant in 1st when the Keeper was using it to hide the varied monster stats, because not each monster of the same type had the same stats.
    I'm not as concerned with obsolescence of app games 10 years down the road, if enough people still want to play it, then nerds will find a way. I remember playing roms in the 2010s to re-live my arcade experiences from the 90s that were long gone.

      @@TheDungeonDive That's no joke. It's definitely a game that doesn't just come off the shelf, you have to plan to play it. In most cases a quick low prep RPG might be a better choice, but some people are more comfortable with a board game. I still do like it, but 2nd ed is better in most cases.

    Concerning Descent: Just a thought, but if everybody would wait to see if FFG will expand the product line before investing in the game, they would not make any money on it and there would never be any expansions. If you are really interested in a product, support it (of course after learning about to see if it would be your cup of tea...). Because I love app driven games too and I want to see more, but there is also lot of negativity around it as well. So we need to support stuff like that.

    • @TheDungeonDive
      @TheDungeonDive  3 года назад

      I already support hundreds of things that I love. Sometimes things need to wait. Also, I don’t have a lot of faith in modern FFG releasing a new thing. So I need to wait. I’d have to get rid of two games to make room for the new Descent box, so I need to make sure it’s worth it.

    • @Scytale82

      @@TheDungeonDive Very fair. Especially since ffg isn't what it once was, I agree. I am just a bit sour concerning all the negativity from descent fans before it even released. I really want this to be a succes because I love app driven games.

      @@TheDungeonDive IIRC, there are 6 or 7 expansions out for it, so it's not like you don't have additional content that's already published. For a non Star Wars game, that's not bad for the "new" FFG (makes spitting sound lol).

    The reason why they can afford the vast amounts of such art is because they mostly hire good entry level artists wanting to prove themselves - who the FFG then work to death whilst paying among the lowest rates in the board game industry. I've never worked for them, myself, but I've heard many a tale of grand exploitation from fellow artists.

    YES. The minis are useless and actually take away from the game experience. I bought some thematic monster stands from Etsy, got rid of all the minis, and I don't miss them at all. The price of the game is a little less justified when you consider the physical components (without the minis). But the tile art is still great.
    edit: I want to add that without the monster minis, I'm able to fit all expansion content, plus extra dice, plus the premium investigator minis into the base game box. The box feels like a solid brick, but its all neatly fits

    The more i play this game, the more I hate this game... lol. The traitor mechanic is garbage. 3 hours for an abrupt end where no one feels good about the outcome, hard pass. All monsters are essentially exactly the same (no abilities or differences in interaction) and almost 0 integration from 1st edition set of monsters. The missions arent replayable and the app implementation itself for mission replayability and randomization is completely non existent for the amount of content in the game. Theres no 'mystery' structure like 1st edition its the most simplistic implementation of the app picks a random icon on the map and have THAT be what characters look for with 0 narrative clues driving players to that location. complete let down.
