  • Our last day in Sekhawati, Rajasthan has brought us to Mahansar via Ramgarh. Both these "painted" towns were once a flourishing cosmopolis, thriving under the patronage of both royalties and affluent "Marwari Seth" businessmen. The now decaying havelis, mausoleums and temples owe their existence to these businessmen and their families. They symbolised the affluence of the merchant families as well as their legacy. One of the prominent families who brought Ramgarh, and then Mahansar to life were the Poddars. They were engaged in active trade practices of opium and other valuables to various countries via the Silk route. But when misfortune struck their enterprise, they were forced to migrate to other regions within India (likely, erstwhile Calcutta and Bombay) in search of suitable vocations. Thus, leaving these architectural marvels to fend for themselves. As time passed, the legacy of the merchant families and the splendour of these lavish painted edifices slid into obscurity. Take a virtual trip with us to Mahansar and uncover the hidden stories of this small town.
