My dad was a goalie and played junior hockey in the 50s. Played in Europe in the 60s. And only started wearing a mask in Europe. It was a form fitted piece of fiberglass that was right up against his face (no padding behind it). On his junior team, there was no backup goalie, they would stitch him up on the bench and send him back out. There were occasions where they pulled some loose teeth on the bench. Most of his upper teeth were gone in his early 20s.

Did you ever take a good look at Sergei Makarov. To me the best icehockeyplayer of all time. The guy was absolutely incredible.
