At the time of when Sonic The Hedgehog 2 came out and Super Sonic was made, I'd assume this would have been around the time Vegeta was facing Cell in his second form... so eventhough the Super Sonic trait looks like it came from the Legendary Super Saiyan it seemed it was heavily based off the way Vegeta's hair sticks up backwards likely Super Vegeta at this point.
Mewtwo: (aiming for Son) "I always prefer a moving target."
Super Sonic: "Grr!" (rushes over and breaks some of Mewtwo's wrist bones) "I'm going to dice you... like the onions on my chili dog!"
Mewtwo: ... "What?"
Super Sonic: (punches Mewtwo with a surprising amount of force)
