A trend I’ve noticed is that at least harbinger hails from every nation. The jester from khaenrhia, signora from monstadt, scaramouche from inazuma, childe a snezhnaya native, and the doctor was originally from sumeru. With that in mind, 3 nations are left. My educated guess is that sandrone will be from Fontaine because of her mechanical know how and the name marionette being French. Regrator is likely from liyue given that it’s the nation of contracts and commerce and he is banker. Not to mention the first time we hear of him is from yelan because of schemes he planned in liyue. That just leaves Natlan to the captain. The manga tells us that the children of murata were a strong warrior people and our only example of one is Vanessa, the hero who saved monstadt and ascended to celestia. It makes a ton of sense that he is an honorable warrior capable of rivaling gods if he’s from the nation of war

Just to make things clear. Not all harbingers have to be from another nation. It’s more like there’s at least one harbinger for every nation. I figured the rest were either from snezhnaya or a possible mystery nation from the past we haven’t heard of yet

So far Capitano is the only harbinger with no negative statements. He has been known to be chivalrous and strong even someone like Scaramouche didn't say anything negative about him. Fatui members including Childe either admires him for his strength or respect him. Varka's letter further prove this when he doesn't seem to bother others instead he somehow helped him in his situations as well as he speaks highly of his strength. Man is literally the opposite of his version in Commedia Dell'arte where he basically just an all talk but no action as he always run away of being scared to fight anyone who he thinks is strong. While genshin seems to potray him as someone who don't talk much and lets his actions speaks for itself
In my opinion, Capitano is a "Darth Vader" case. He turned evil with hatred because he got the true knowledge of what Teyvat is and what Celestia did to Khaen'riah. He joined the Fatui because of his thirst for justice and also because of Pierro the leader. I also believe that he will be a Hydro character because that element fits perfectly his personality.

It's entirely possible that the Tsaritsa herself had something resembling noble intentions when she created the Fatui, and I'm sure the Fatui's rank and file soldiers and agents all think they're working for the greater good, but at least half of the Harbingers seem to have no moral code whatsoever. *At best,* they're selfish and power-hungry, and at least a few of them are sadistic (i.e. Dottore). They go out of their way to bully and *murder* the people of other nations, sometimes even putting their own schemes at risk to do so. Plus, it's really hard to generalize them as being the 'good guys' when they don't even trust EACH OTHER. Each Harbinger probably considers the other Harbingers their enemies just as much as they would consider the Traveler one, with some exceptions, and there's no way they all care about the Tsaritsa's goals as much as Childe does. I hope that, by the time we get to Snezhnaya, the thin threads that kept the Harbingers working together quickly fall apart and we get to witness a bloody civil war. It would be an AWESOME story, and possibly even give a valid reason for the Traveler and the Tsaritsa to join forces, as the latter tries to undo her mistakes in letting the Harbingers become so powerful and controlling.
I think Hoyoverse is giving Fatui characters the opposite of the character traits of Comedia dell'Arte. Thats why original Capitano is coward and nothing but a liar but Genshin Capitano is brave and respected. Same goes for Dottore. Original Dottore tries prove himself people. He pretends to be an expert in many subjects talking constantly but actually he has no idea about what he is talking about. Which means he is an imbecile. But Genshin's Dottore is a genius mad scientist. He doesnt tries to impress people with his words. He does it with his actions. Another example? Tartaglia. Which means Stutterer in İtalian. But our Tartaglia is an excellent speaker. He is able make friends even with enemy because of his communication skills. Sorry for my bad english

A few more parallels that add a LOT to your initial theory: -Arlecchino is depicted as an easily-distracted, clumsy clown and Genshin's is extremely serious and focused. -Pulcinella is somewhat similar to Arlecchino but is usually "less sympathetic." The few lore drops we know about Genshin Pulcinella is that he is extremely sympathetic, like towards Childe's family members. -Columbina is referred to as a "perky maid" but in Genshin seems pretty laid-back, as she is sleeping on the coffin. Some seem pretty similar, tho, like Scaramouche being a "villanous braggart" and Pantalone being a "wealthy man". Who knows, tho! The tenth harbinger spot is missing tho, and there is one other character we haven't mentioned with is the "lover couple" or Innamorati. Much to think about

I think capitano is the harbinger I am most exited to see From the trailer, how he described that signora's death wouldn't affect their progress, it just sounds like someone who would have the biggest overview of the situations out of all the harbingers (except the Jester)

Considering who Hoyo cast as the Japanse voice of Capitano, this is one character I am looking forward to hear once he makes his in-game appearance. FYI, Capitano's Japanese voice actor is Ken Narita. You may know him as Sesshomaru from Inuyasha, and Jeremiah Gottwald from Code Geass. In addition, he also inherited the roles of Bright Noa from the Gundam franchise and Hajime Saito from Rurouni Kenshin since the death of the original voice actor, the late Hirotaka Suzuoki.
Capitano is my favorite character in the genshin, he is very cool and mysterious, there are so many questions and secrets around him, what is hidden behind his mask, where does he get such power,is he really as fair and good as he is described?It has to be some kind of plot twist.I like him with his character and extraordinary and badass design, his character, unlike other fatui, is one that has not been described negatively, he seems to be a reasonable and calm guy who just does his job and has the will to crush the gods, which sets him apart from the rest of the fatuis.I think he will be extremely fair, fanatical in his beliefs, and respectful to strong rivals, I can't wait for him in Natlan, I hope he really is the first harbinger and will be able to defeat archon and mc, show me an intimidating and serious character, and not another punching bag.

I have a theory that pierro used to be the first Fatui harbinger before, and that he received a promotion from the Tsaritsa that ascended his position to the director of the Fatui. Therefore, he would probably see Capitano as a worthy person as he was a loyal warriro to the Fatui and who bestow him the title of the first Fatui harbinger.
I cannot wait to see Capitano lore, that man has been an object of my fascination for such a long while. I have garnered up some ideas. One idea that popped up into my head was that he could be the familiar of The Tsaritsa. As so far we have not seen what her familiar could be like or if she even had one. And what is under his mask will forever be my favorite question. Is it a darth vader situation where it helps him live, is it just for show, is it for shame of what he is under the mask? 12:45 I went and checked the CN wiki for this exact quest and dialogue, the Captain mentioned here is 大尉(Dawei), which literally means captain of the team and not Capitano/队长/Duizhang. Source:Lost in a Foreign Land: Seeking/ 他乡迷失客·觅迹 Shred of Corporal Nikolay's Diary: "...Did our ancestors fight the calamity like this five hundred years ago? The Captain once said we knew not a hundredth of the grueling battles that our ancestors went through..." 尼古拉下士的日志残片：「…五百年前的祖先们就是这样对抗灾变的吗？大尉说，我们经历的苦战相比祖先而言，不过只是零头而已…」 Straight up the only way to get accurate lore is to read and listen in CN, besides grammatical/ technical inconsistencies, there's a ton of literary and figurative meanings that are lost in translation just because no other language packs as much meaning into a single symbol. Also you can see how short the CN dialogue is compared to the EN version above, a lot of things are left out in EN simply because there's literally not enough text space.
despite the fact that capitano looks terrifying, i have a feeling by what we’ve heard about him when we meet him he’s going to take on more of a friendly role sort of like childe in liyue, even tho we fought him in the end childe and the traveller stayed rather friendly during the archon quest and even during his story quest. i see something like this in the future in natlan (where i think we’re meeting capitano because it just makes sense) edit: reasons behind why i personally think we’re meeting capitano in natlan. one, what aster said about his ties to combat and the pyro archon being the god of war. two if the theory that he is #1 of the harbingers and pierro is actually the overseer or whatever is correct, which i think it is after watching ashikai’s video and how in the comments of the video all of the harbingers are labeled as harbingers, while pierro is labeled as “director of the fatui”. so if he is #1 it would make the most sense to meet him in the nation right before we go to sneznaya. all of that might be obvious but i wanted to say it anyway.
as someone that loves fighting, i do believe capitano would be a friendlier harbinger than the likes of dottore and columbina. dude would probably admire how we fight and would give us respect even if it's not on the same side of things.
RUclipsr "The Laughing Man" just made a really interesting video about the bloodstained knight theory in particular, its quite compelling. If you like Capitano, then I certainly recommend you watch the video, and support a promising Genshin lore channel
Long comment incoming. My personal theory or headcanon is that they are at Natlan to fight the pyro archon to take their gnosis. Nahida states the top 3 are rivals to the Archons themselves and having Capitano demonstrate that beating the most militaristic Archon would be the best way of setting up Shneznaya, the very region after. The pyro archon is the god of war and as such, I can totally imagine them being unwilling to part with their gnosis without a fight. Knowing this, the Fatui send what is essentially their strongest combatant to retrieve it from such a foe with that being Capitano's job. Whether he wins the respectable way like the Fatui hype his character to be, the cowardly tactic way via poison or hostages to give strength to his inspiration or not winning at all but proving himself as a strong fighter and earning the gnosis I don't know but I personally would prefer if he actually won. Going from Mondstant onwards we are seeing more and more the power of people over that of the power of deities, gods or other beings: Diluc and Jean helping Venti with Dvalin, the Adepti and Liyue working together - going from a ruling power to deities and humans working together in harmony - to Inazuma where we have humanity fight back against injustice and with the power of their visions - help from the gods - to defeat or change their oppressor to humans misusing the power or hunger for godlike power, doing inhumane acts like the scholars in Sumeru. Going by such a trend, I can imagine Fontaine being about understanding between gods and humans that their ideals and very natures are incompatible, with humans dying in mere moments compared to a deity's life span twisting their view of logic and injustice, hence why there isn't a hydro archon that has stuck and finally Natlan proving that we don't need God's anymore in teyvat to rule over us and what better way to prove that than by beating the Archon in their respective field i.e. war and combat with nothing but pure human strength. That we don't need the gods to rule over us anymore and a human, like Captiano, proves that by being a normal human and winning at the end of the day. Leaks (trust them however much you like) state that Capitano is the strongest individual in Teyvat and Genshin many times state his humanity. From this, I can imagine that Capitano might very well be the Fatui's driving will and strength as to why they are doing all this now (By now I mean started collecting Gnosis this very moment instead of earlier), having a human on the level/exceed that of the current gods might have been the Tsaritsa's and the Jester's final motivation to fight Celestia, to avenge Kheanria and show the value of humans. Other theories I have is that he is entirely human but either loosely connected to higher powers like the moon sisters or is a reincarnation of previous lords if not gods hence his strength and power. He could be related to the Kheanrian's hence the mask and is unaffected by the curse or its negative properties or he could just be a really good guy who sides with humans in the fight against Celestia in direct contrast to the inspiration Capitano and is just super strong.
capitano historical inspiration , the spanish conquistador, makes his symbol most likely be the 3 nails as they represent Christ's sacrifice and conquistadors loved christianity just as they did gold; he being from natlan also keeps the trend of each harbinger being from different countries, natlan culture of strength and honor fits very well the captain own ideals. also the iberic stock character being from the iberic americas based region is just a given at this point lol
I think that to understand who Capitano is, you need to know who is Bogatyr (Богатырь) in Russian culture. I'm pretty confident he is based on it, and no one here knows what it is. Knowing Hoyoverse really cares about cultures in particular, it is very likely. Basically, Bogatyrs are heroes of Russian epics and legends, distinguished by great strength and performing feats of a religious or patriotic nature. The heroes stood guard over Rus', at the outpost. Some stories associated with the heroes go back to historical events. They are generally portrayed as buff warriors with armor, they ride on horses, there is a famous picture called "Богатыри" if you want to see what it looks like. I think that Capitano will be represented as a gigachad who simply slays all enemies and don't think about anything. He is in fact just so purely focused on power, that he doesn't have much time to think about a bigger picture, and justifies all he does with that it's for the sake of Snezhnaya. He really strongly reminds me of "Богатырь".
I think that Capitano will be reversed from the Comedia version. I mean it in the sense that although everyone praises his power and his deeds, he isn't (or will not be) proud of what he did/will do (or the means he used to do) something, and might even be embarassed of whatever it is, but only did it in the first place because it had to be this way. Might be a copium, but gives me a feeling of those villains that only did something bad to begin within because he had no other option, and at the end, he saw no way coming back.
I speculate,that since the Captain is the only one whose face has never been shown yet,he's likely-unlikely gonna be an armor set animated via powerful magic.Being once a human,he managed to find a way to make himself kinda semi-immortal,and that's why he's among the Harbringers,i think.
I have seen a patern that there is one harbinger from each region (or is conected to one), The Jester is from Khaenri'ah, Pantalone is from liyue, Signora is from Mondstat, Scara is from Inazuma, Dottore is from Sumeru, Sandrone is probably from Fontaine, but we are missing someone from Natlan, now in my mind Capitano is the best probable option to be conected to Natlan considering the warrior culture they probably have there, the other harbinger that might be from Natlan is Arlechino but it doesnt make that much sense in my mind, the other harbingers are probably from Snezhnaya like Childe
I love this idea of Capitano as a fake. I never considered it, but I see so many options for how the greater story could unfold. It opens up more origin stories and creates more possibility of how he will react should his truth be uncovered.
I hope Hoyo either never takes his mask off, or there is something mortifying under it. Can't bear the idea of plain human face under it. Also i just LOVE the concept of Capitano being the most skillful combatant in Teyvat. Tall, intimidating, bulky form with deep voice just can't be anything else.
i feel like zhongli has to be the most skilled though, after all hes the oldest creature known to teyvat (as in excluding celestia) and he has spent most of his life fighting, i doubt the bloodstained knight could be better

Zhongli is one of the oldest archon but oldest life on Teyvat is debatable Scara is only 500 years old but almost became a complete god in less than a day and Venti went from wind spirit to a terraforming god that could fight off Durin, so we already have proof that you can be young and still become immensely powerful

To me, the fact of capitano being just a normal human would be soooo badass exactly because all the reasons you cited. I, in my humble opinion, would not want him to be anything but a normal human with immortality or something like that to justify the longevity, but extremely powerful, enough to challenge gods.

Mmm well, if he is like with the Shogun, then his name “captain” will give us a pretty good hint of his role (a shogun is someone that directs an empire in the name of the emperor but that doesn’t have any free will at all when governing). A captain is under a General, the difference between a leader and a captain is that you OBEY a captain while you FOLLOW a leader
I don't want to fully rule out that Capitano isn't from Mondstat or will play a big role, we know that there will be a Mondstat expansion (probably when Mika arrives, I hope) and since he's made contact with Varka before. I'm also pretty certain that Mondstat and Sneznhya border each other, going from Stormbearer mountains into the snowy wasteland, with this in mind, having the Fatui gaining control of some sort in that rougher area that they are used to whilst the Mondstat citizens are not would both benefit and be easy for the Fatui. Of course this depends on whether the expansion of Mondstat will result in an archon quest, since if it's implemented before Fontaine it would disrupt the flow of our journey, going back to Mondstat whilst we're currently in Sumeru. I'm looking forward to seeing Capitano and I really hope he plays a big role in Mondstat
One theory that I had was that Capitano is the either the son or descendant of the Pyro archon. His sense of values goes against Natlan, since “the victors shall burn bright, while the losers must turn to ash.” He couldn’t agree to this and sought to strengthen himself by joining the Fatui before going back to challenge the archon. If he does end up becoming playable, I’m guessing he’s a pyro or geo bow user. My reason for this is because I think most Natlan characters will be more hands on in combat, with swords, claymores and pole arms dominating the region, while catalysts and bows are looked down upon. What better way to oppose the archon than with a different fighting style.
no pls, give him a sword, also considering Natlans background, indigenous americans, used all kinds of weapons, i dont believe that would fit natlan at all.
I very much hope he is the real deal, that he is the great warrior and maybe even a good person that they make him to be, it would be the perfect thing to be introduced in Natlan as our last stop before Snezhnaya. Interacting and maybe even working with Capitano could shake the world view the Traveller built up in their head. Heck, make the contrast between his honor and the brutality of war of the Pyro Archon and we have a nice drama going.
@Blaze He’s still human, and mortal, even if he is strong, he isn’t invincible to time ( age and getting old) Like I said, leaks can change Natlan is super far away, so you should still take with grain of salt, I do think hxg was over-exaggerating on him a bit too much for it to be 100% considering, Hyv loves the archons and travelrs wayy more they might switch things up.
I believe Capitano is indeed a human, but we have already seen that "human" in Genshin is relative. Both Scaramouche and Dottore himself describe Dottore as human. But we know he is at least 400+ years old, has/had multiple segments who seemed to share a hivemind to some extent, very likely made agumentations to himself etc. Shenhe despite being often mistaken for an adeptus is a regular human as well but has no problem casually carrying huge boulders around that probably weight at least a ton. Kokomi is questionable (the theory of her being a dragon heir) but at least at this point she is supposed to be a human too despite being able to float, breath under water, walk on water etc. I'm sure there are more examples of "human" characters possessing inhuman abilities. So yeah, Capitano was called a human by Varka and leaks (not confirmed) doubled down on him being a human, but that doesn't mean he can't be practically immortal with crazy abilities.
I believe the theory that Capitano is the Bloodstained Knight, just look at the circlet mask & his mask, very interesting that Pierro is able to find these people & invited them to join the Fatui
I’m not sure what would be the point of making Capitano’s sense of honor nothing but a front. Would do nothing but make him a less likable and more generic villain in the eyes of players.

I really want him to be a king of some powerful country and met him there being clueless that he's actually the masked harbinger Capitano in the future.
Not as much evidence for it, but I think he’s Imunlaukr. Dragonspine lore has been entirely unexplained except for the Durin stuff and has had no relevance, and the Imunlaukr clan is still a huge mystery. There are speculations that Varka is a descendant of the Imunlaukr clan, and if that’s true and Capitano is Imunlaukr that would make the comparisons between them make more sense. Since Imunlaukr was an outlander to Dragonspine he could still be from Natlan, and this would give him plenty of reason to hate Celestia.
Another possible theory is that he could be The Berserker. That would give him a reason to be against Celestia since he lived through a similar event to khaenri'ah, moreover the artifacts and lore describe him as a masked individual, or severely disfigured man, which would explain why he is the only person who is completely masked. That said, The Berserker has been said to be dead, so it would go against logic with what Varka's words of Capitano being a mortal if he was a resurrected person (unless it's something beyond a zombie). The alternative is that The Berserker's death meant the death of his role as a madman rather than his life, but this wouldn't explain how he managed to live up to the present as a mortal. I remember reading that this theory had some more holes, but I can't recall them well enough to write them down.

A trend I’ve noticed is that at least harbinger hails from every nation. The jester from khaenrhia, signora from monstadt, scaramouche from inazuma, childe a snezhnaya native, and the doctor was originally from sumeru. With that in mind, 3 nations are left. My educated guess is that sandrone will be from Fontaine because of her mechanical know how and the name marionette being French. Regrator is likely from liyue given that it’s the nation of contracts and commerce and he is banker. Not to mention the first time we hear of him is from yelan because of schemes he planned in liyue. That just leaves Natlan to the captain. The manga tells us that the children of murata were a strong warrior people and our only example of one is Vanessa, the hero who saved monstadt and ascended to celestia. It makes a ton of sense that he is an honorable warrior capable of rivaling gods if he’s from the nation of war

So far Capitano is the only harbinger with no negative statements. He has been known to be chivalrous and strong even someone like Scaramouche didn't say anything negative about him. Fatui members including Childe either admires him for his strength or respect him. Varka's letter further prove this when he doesn't seem to bother others instead he somehow helped him in his situations as well as he speaks highly of his strength.
Man is literally the opposite of his version in Commedia Dell'arte where he basically just an all talk but no action as he always run away of being scared to fight anyone who he thinks is strong. While genshin seems to potray him as someone who don't talk much and lets his actions speaks for itself
In my opinion, Capitano is a "Darth Vader" case.
He turned evil with hatred because he got the true knowledge of what Teyvat is and what Celestia did to Khaen'riah.
He joined the Fatui because of his thirst for justice and also because of Pierro the leader.
I also believe that he will be a Hydro character because that element fits perfectly his personality.

It's entirely possible that the Tsaritsa herself had something resembling noble intentions when she created the Fatui, and I'm sure the Fatui's rank and file soldiers and agents all think they're working for the greater good, but at least half of the Harbingers seem to have no moral code whatsoever. *At best,* they're selfish and power-hungry, and at least a few of them are sadistic (i.e. Dottore). They go out of their way to bully and *murder* the people of other nations, sometimes even putting their own schemes at risk to do so. Plus, it's really hard to generalize them as being the 'good guys' when they don't even trust EACH OTHER. Each Harbinger probably considers the other Harbingers their enemies just as much as they would consider the Traveler one, with some exceptions, and there's no way they all care about the Tsaritsa's goals as much as Childe does.
I hope that, by the time we get to Snezhnaya, the thin threads that kept the Harbingers working together quickly fall apart and we get to witness a bloody civil war. It would be an AWESOME story, and possibly even give a valid reason for the Traveler and the Tsaritsa to join forces, as the latter tries to undo her mistakes in letting the Harbingers become so powerful and controlling.

I think Hoyoverse is giving Fatui characters the opposite of the character traits of Comedia dell'Arte. Thats why original Capitano is coward and nothing but a liar but Genshin Capitano is brave and respected.
Same goes for Dottore. Original Dottore tries prove himself people. He pretends to be an expert in many subjects talking constantly but actually he has no idea about what he is talking about. Which means he is an imbecile. But Genshin's Dottore is a genius mad scientist. He doesnt tries to impress people with his words. He does it with his actions.
Another example? Tartaglia. Which means Stutterer in İtalian. But our Tartaglia is an excellent speaker. He is able make friends even with enemy because of his communication skills. Sorry for my bad english

A few more parallels that add a LOT to your initial theory:
-Arlecchino is depicted as an easily-distracted, clumsy clown and Genshin's is extremely serious and focused.
-Pulcinella is somewhat similar to Arlecchino but is usually "less sympathetic." The few lore drops we know about Genshin Pulcinella is that he is extremely sympathetic, like towards Childe's family members.
-Columbina is referred to as a "perky maid" but in Genshin seems pretty laid-back, as she is sleeping on the coffin.
Some seem pretty similar, tho, like Scaramouche being a "villanous braggart" and Pantalone being a "wealthy man". Who knows, tho!
The tenth harbinger spot is missing tho, and there is one other character we haven't mentioned with is the "lover couple" or Innamorati. Much to think about

Considering who Hoyo cast as the Japanse voice of Capitano, this is one character I am looking forward to hear once he makes his in-game appearance.
FYI, Capitano's Japanese voice actor is Ken Narita. You may know him as Sesshomaru from Inuyasha, and Jeremiah Gottwald from Code Geass. Capitano is my favorite character in the genshin, he is very cool and mysterious, there are so many questions and secrets around him, what is hidden behind his mask, where does he get such power,is he really as fair and good as he is described?It has to be some kind of plot twist.I like him with his character and extraordinary and badass design, his character, unlike other fatui, is one that has not been described negatively, he seems to be a reasonable and calm guy who just does his job and has the will to crush the gods, which sets him apart from the rest of the fatuis.I think he will be extremely fair, fanatical in his beliefs, and respectful to strong rivals, I can't wait for him in Natlan, I hope he really is the first harbinger and will be able to defeat archon and mc, show me an intimidating and serious character, and not another punching bag.

I have a theory that pierro used to be the first Fatui harbinger before, and that he received a promotion from the Tsaritsa that ascended his position to the director of the Fatui. Therefore, he would probably see Capitano as a worthy person as he was a loyal warriro to the Fatui and who bestow him the title of the first Fatui harbinger.

I have garnered up some ideas. One idea that popped up into my head was that he could be the familiar of The Tsaritsa. As so far we have not seen what her familiar could be like or if she even had one.

Straight up the only way to get accurate lore is to read and listen in CN, besides grammatical/ technical inconsistencies, there's a ton of literary and figurative meanings that are lost in translation just because no other language packs as much meaning into a single symbol. Also you can see how short the CN dialogue is compared to the EN version above, a lot of things are left out in EN simply because there's literally not enough text space.
despite the fact that capitano looks terrifying, i have a feeling by what we’ve heard about him when we meet him he’s going to take on more of a friendly role sort of like childe in liyue, even tho we fought him in the end childe and the traveller stayed rather friendly during the archon quest and even during his story quest. i see something like this in the future in natlan (where i think we’re meeting capitano because it just makes sense)
edit: reasons behind why i personally think we’re meeting capitano in natlan. one, what aster said about his ties to combat and the pyro archon being the god of war. two if the theory that he is #1 of the harbingers and pierro is actually the overseer or whatever is correct, which i think it is after watching ashikai’s video and how in the comments of the video all of the harbingers are labeled as harbingers, while pierro is labeled as “director of the fatui”. so if he is #1 it would make the most sense to meet him in the nation right before we go to sneznaya. all of that might be obvious but i wanted to say it anyway.
also in the event "of ballads and brews" it is said that Capitano went to Natlan
as someone that loves fighting, i do believe capitano would be a friendlier harbinger than the likes of dottore and columbina. dude would probably admire how we fight and would give us respect even if it's not on the same side of things.

My personal theory or headcanon is that they are at Natlan to fight the pyro archon to take their gnosis. Nahida states the top 3 are rivals to the Archons themselves and having Capitano demonstrate that beating the most militaristic Archon would be the best way of setting up Shneznaya, the very region after.
The pyro archon is the god of war and as such, I can totally imagine them being unwilling to part with their gnosis without a fight. Knowing this, the Fatui send what is essentially their strongest combatant to retrieve it from such a foe with that being Capitano's job. Whether he wins the respectable way like the Fatui hype his character to be, the cowardly tactic way via poison or hostages to give strength to his inspiration or not winning at all but proving himself as a strong fighter and earning the gnosis I don't know but I personally would prefer if he actually won.
Going from Mondstant onwards we are seeing more and more the power of people over that of the power of deities, gods or other beings: Diluc and Jean helping Venti with Dvalin, the Adepti and Liyue working together - going from a ruling power to deities and humans working together in harmony - to Inazuma where we have humanity fight back against injustice and with the power of their visions - help from the gods - to defeat or change their oppressor to humans misusing the power or hunger for godlike power, doing inhumane acts like the scholars in Sumeru. Going by such a trend, I can imagine Fontaine being about understanding between gods and humans that their ideals and very natures are incompatible, with humans dying in mere moments compared to a deity's life span twisting their view of logic and injustice, hence why there isn't a hydro archon that has stuck and finally Natlan proving that we don't need God's anymore in teyvat to rule over us and what better way to prove that than by beating the Archon in their respective field i.e. war and combat with nothing but pure human strength. That we don't need the gods to rule over us anymore and a human, like Captiano, proves that by being a normal human and winning at the end of the day.
Leaks (trust them however much you like) state that Capitano is the strongest individual in Teyvat and Genshin many times state his humanity. From this, I can imagine that Capitano might very well be the Fatui's driving will and strength as to why they are doing all this now (By now I mean started collecting Gnosis this very moment instead of earlier), having a human on the level/exceed that of the current gods might have been the Tsaritsa's and the Jester's final motivation to fight Celestia, to avenge Kheanria and show the value of humans.
Other theories I have is that he is entirely human but either loosely connected to higher powers like the moon sisters or is a reincarnation of previous lords if not gods hence his strength and power. He could be related to the Kheanrian's hence the mask and is unaffected by the curse or its negative properties or he could just be a really good guy who sides with humans in the fight against Celestia in direct contrast to the inspiration Capitano and is just super strong.

capitano historical inspiration , the spanish conquistador, makes his symbol most likely be the 3 nails as they represent Christ's sacrifice and conquistadors loved christianity just as they did gold; he being from natlan also keeps the trend of each harbinger being from different countries, natlan culture of strength and honor fits very well the captain own ideals.
also the iberic stock character being from the iberic americas based region is just a given at this point lol

I think that to understand who Capitano is, you need to know who is Bogatyr (Богатырь) in Russian culture. I'm pretty confident he is based on it, and no one here knows what it is. Knowing Hoyoverse really cares about cultures in particular, it is very likely. Basically, Bogatyrs are heroes of Russian epics and legends, distinguished by great strength and performing feats of a religious or patriotic nature. The heroes stood guard over Rus', at the outpost. Some stories associated with the heroes go back to historical events. They are generally portrayed as buff warriors with armor, they ride on horses, there is a famous picture called "Богатыри" if you want to see what it looks like.
I think that Capitano will be represented as a gigachad who simply slays all enemies and don't think about anything. He is in fact just so purely focused on power, that he doesn't have much time to think about a bigger picture, and justifies all he does with that it's for the sake of Snezhnaya. He really strongly reminds me of "Богатырь".
Him being an abyss spy would be pretty interesting.

I think that Capitano will be reversed from the Comedia version.
I mean it in the sense that although everyone praises his power and his deeds, he isn't (or will not be) proud of what he did/will do (or the means he used to do) something, and might even be embarassed of whatever it is, but only did it in the first place because it had to be this way.
Might be a copium, but gives me a feeling of those villains that only did something bad to begin within because he had no other option, and at the end, he saw no way coming back.

I speculate,that since the Captain is the only one whose face has never been shown yet,he's likely-unlikely gonna be an armor set animated via powerful magic.Being once a human,he managed to find a way to make himself kinda semi-immortal,and that's why he's among the Harbringers,i think.
I have seen a patern that there is one harbinger from each region (or is conected to one), The Jester is from Khaenri'ah, Pantalone is from liyue, Signora is from Mondstat, Scara is from Inazuma, Dottore is from Sumeru, Sandrone is probably from Fontaine, but we are missing someone from Natlan, now in my mind Capitano is the best probable option to be conected to Natlan considering the warrior culture they probably have there, the other harbinger that might be from Natlan is Arlechino but it doesnt make that much sense in my mind, the other harbingers are probably from Snezhnaya like Childe

Scara is only 500 years old but almost became a complete god in less than a day and Venti went from wind spirit to a terraforming god that could fight off Durin, so we already have proof that you can be young and still become immensely powerful

one thing I always notice is that most if not all the harbingers have their characterization the direct opposite of their commedia counter parts.
Mmm well, if he is like with the Shogun, then his name “captain” will give us a pretty good hint of his role (a shogun is someone that directs an empire in the name of the emperor but that doesn’t have any free will at all when governing). A captain is under a General, the difference between a leader and a captain is that you OBEY a captain while you FOLLOW a leader
I don't want to fully rule out that Capitano isn't from Mondstat or will play a big role, we know that there will be a Mondstat expansion (probably when Mika arrives, I hope) and since he's made contact with Varka before. I'm also pretty certain that Mondstat and Sneznhya border each other, going from Stormbearer mountains into the snowy wasteland, with this in mind, having the Fatui gaining control of some sort in that rougher area that they are used to whilst the Mondstat citizens are not would both benefit and be easy for the Fatui. Of course this depends on whether the expansion of Mondstat will result in an archon quest, since if it's implemented before Fontaine it would disrupt the flow of our journey, going back to Mondstat whilst we're currently in Sumeru.
I'm looking forward to seeing Capitano and I really hope he plays a big role in Mondstat

One theory that I had was that Capitano is the either the son or descendant of the Pyro archon. His sense of values goes against Natlan, since “the victors shall burn bright, while the losers must turn to ash.” He couldn’t agree to this and sought to strengthen himself by joining the Fatui before going back to challenge the archon.
If he does end up becoming playable, I’m guessing he’s a pyro or geo bow user. My reason for this is because I think most Natlan characters will be more hands on in combat, with swords, claymores and pole arms dominating the region, while catalysts and bows are looked down upon. What better way to oppose the archon than with a different fighting style.
no pls, give him a sword, also considering Natlans background, indigenous americans, used all kinds of weapons, i dont believe that would fit natlan at all.

I very much hope he is the real deal, that he is the great warrior and maybe even a good person that they make him to be, it would be the perfect thing to be introduced in Natlan as our last stop before Snezhnaya. Interacting and maybe even working with Capitano could shake the world view the Traveller built up in their head. Heck, make the contrast between his honor and the brutality of war of the Pyro Archon and we have a nice drama going.

@Blaze He’s the strongest human, But we’ve yet to see full truth in game. Dont take the leaks as full truth. Considering were no where near natlan .
@Blaze He’s still human, and mortal, even if he is strong, he isn’t invincible to time ( age and getting old) Like I said, leaks can change Natlan is super far away, so you should still take with grain of salt, I do think hxg was over-exaggerating on him a bit too much for it to be 100% considering, Hyv loves the archons and travelrs wayy more they might switch things up.
I believe Capitano is indeed a human, but we have already seen that "human" in Genshin is relative.
Both Scaramouche and Dottore himself describe Dottore as human. But we know he is at least 400+ years old, has/had multiple segments who seemed to share a hivemind to some extent, very likely made agumentations to himself etc.
Shenhe despite being often mistaken for an adeptus is a regular human as well but has no problem casually carrying huge boulders around that probably weight at least a ton.
Kokomi is questionable (the theory of her being a dragon heir) but at least at this point she is supposed to be a human too despite being able to float, breath under water, walk on water etc.
I'm sure there are more examples of "human" characters possessing inhuman abilities.
So yeah, Capitano was called a human by Varka and leaks (not confirmed) doubled down on him being a human, but that doesn't mean he can't be practically immortal with crazy abilities.

I’m not sure what would be the point of making Capitano’s sense of honor nothing but a front. Would do nothing but make him a less likable and more generic villain in the eyes of players.
can you imagine the capitano being revealed to be like "King" from one punch man? #1 in the world but actually totally powerless; everyone fears him but he doesn't actually do anything. fatui just using his presence to scare people lol

Not as much evidence for it, but I think he’s Imunlaukr. Dragonspine lore has been entirely unexplained except for the Durin stuff and has had no relevance, and the Imunlaukr clan is still a huge mystery. There are speculations that Varka is a descendant of the Imunlaukr clan, and if that’s true and Capitano is Imunlaukr that would make the comparisons between them make more sense. Since Imunlaukr was an outlander to Dragonspine he could still be from Natlan, and this would give him plenty of reason to hate Celestia.
All I want to be happy is for Capitano to be a some sort of eldritch abomination hiding inside a humanoid body.
Another possible theory is that he could be The Berserker. That would give him a reason to be against Celestia since he lived through a similar event to khaenri'ah, moreover the artifacts and lore describe him as a masked individual, or severely disfigured man, which would explain why he is the only person who is completely masked.
That said, The Berserker has been said to be dead, so it would go against logic with what Varka's words of Capitano being a mortal if he was a resurrected person (unless it's something beyond a zombie). The alternative is that The Berserker's death meant the death of his role as a madman rather than his life, but this wouldn't explain how he managed to live up to the present as a mortal.
I remember reading that this theory had some more holes, but I can't recall them well enough to write them down.
