  • The immense density of the rainforest is one of its more incredible defining characteristics, so this company uses a combination of drones and advanced AI technology to spot poachers and stop them before any animals are harmed.

If you've ever been out in a National Park like the Kruger National Park, there are a lot of lions, there are a lot of leopards. Even although these are highly experienced trackers that understand which way to walk, and where to walk, and how to walk into the wind and not with the wind, it's still a daunting task for anybody. So typically what happens is we would integrate a drone unit with an anti-poaching unit.
Poachers are creatures of habit. They have entry and exit points into the various parks. So we would then go out probably eight o'clock in the evening and we'd basically stay there right up until sunup the following morning and we would go and plot a grid and we would fly and patrol that grid looking for a possible incursion. If an incursion is detected, the first thing that happens is that the drone is placed into a holding pattern, or a loiter pattern, and we would simply loiter in the radius at an altitude that keeps us working in a stealthy manner. We would have no navigation lights turned on during this process. And we would be watching the activity of the poacher on the ground. And at the same time, the drone team, that consists of a sensor operator and a pilot, would radio in and start giving coordinates to the anti-poaching unit.
The best result is that the poachers are apprehended and are arrested and end up in the court case. And with a bit of luck, they're prosecuted for doing this. Sometimes, there can be a firefight and the poachers will return fire and there can be a gunfight and there can be fatalities. I mean, that happens. It's not always like that, but probably 30% of the time, that's real.

Drones Are Helping Catch Poachers Operating Under Cover of Darkness

“Stopping or even just slowing poachers could have big benefits for the countries where they operate. Residents of such countries often depend on wildlife to support the local economy, in part by attracting tourists who want to see animals like elephants and rhinos run wild. But poaching has broader global ramifications, too.”

“African forest elephants have been in trouble for a while, but only now have scientists figured out that more than half of them have died over the past decade. It took hundreds of researchers nine years, walking literally thousands of miles, counting piles of elephant dung as well as elephant carcasses stripped of their ivory tusks, to realize that the majority of the dead had been shot.”

Across the globe, elephants are poached for their tusks, pangolins for their scales, and totoaba fish for their bladders. Tackling the fourth largest crime industry in the world isn’t easy, but biologists, roboticists, detectives and even NASA scientists are getting creative in the hopes of making a difference. In this Seeker series, we’ll investigate true stories of wildlife crime and meet the people who are working to protect the world’s most endangered and persecuted animals.

PMCs are expensive and you would end up with a war there because poachers would be fighting for their lives when encountering PMCs. Now they have 3 options:
      1) surrender and ask for lighter sentence
      2) try to flee and get a somewhat harsher
      3) fight, risking their lives as well as eventually getting caught and having a book thrown at them.
If you let people hunt poachers you significantly reduce viability of options 1 and 2.

One thing that increased populations of these endangered animals was selective hunting, with the proceeds going to local communities, national parks, education programs, etc. When the local communities had a monetary stake in which more animals equaled more hunts equaled more money, populations increased. While I realize hunting endangered animals is anathema to many, and drones might become a viable option; I look at all options when it comes to preserving these animals for the future.

I am sitting here thinking about all the crazy things to put inside these drones to fight poaching...
    A rabid squirrel.
    Angry bees.
    Bed bugs.
UV Dye and meat juice to attract predators and make for easier tracking.
    Fire ants.
    Confetti with really sharp edges.
Put a spear on the front end of the drone and see how many poachers you can skewer.
A super strong laser that only goes for the fingers, removing the capability to fire a weapon. They could keep their thumbs, I guess.
Last but not least, the drone flies down real low and releases itching powder.

Post vulnerable areas as strictly off limits after dark (trespassers will be ASSUMED to be poaching) and protected by live, lethal aircraft fire. Then put some armaments on those drones and light up a few poachers. Word will get around quickly where NOT to pursue protected game.

  • @aabhisheks
    @aabhisheks 3 года назад

Suggest use of solar cells to maximise flight time of the drones; use of sound technology to emit high pitched sounds before landing to drive away animals and poachers alike should warranted but used sparingly; if possible the drones can also be fitted with mini tranquilliser or taser to become party to an armed conflict with poachers

  • @_Viking

Tag the elephants with GPS beacons and fly a drone where the GPS and elephants are. Using infrared cameras it's possible to see the poachers in the dark. Then it's just up to the rangers on the ground to hunt the poachers down.

We can design and deploy drones for warfare, even if this guy got a fraction of that tech or funding he would be well advanced. Some armed forces have completely silent drones that make zero noise, these are already in play, not to mention drones which can be armed from the air. I’m sure corruption plays a role here and implicates progress. But when these animals are gone they are gone forever ultimately everyone then loses.

what we need to do is invest in artificial in other words for its purpose fake undetectable counterfeit animal products. it wont stop as long as there's money to be made. Animal products are expensive because their rare but even more so because of the black market which makes it even harder to get. This makes it worthwhile to engage in poaching esp when in a poor country with limited opportunities. Also education, start teaching children that their is no such thing as magic and that these animals dont have healing powers and any meds from an organism can be artificially produced.
